JOSPEH, PEARL MAY

A devotion to older persons and a compassion for those less fortunate, expressed in a varied practical ways through the years, were outstanding characteristics of Mrs. John Sidney Joseph (May Shuman Hughes) who died tragically last week at her ranch home - White Acres, a mile south and ¾ mile west of Potwin.

Mrs. Joseph's body was found on a porch of her home Thursday morning, November 14, by Herbert Claassen who went to the home after friends were unable to contact Mrs. Joseph by phone. Officials said she had been dead since Tuesday.

On Tuesday, a neighbor Harold Brenner, had taken Mrs. Joseph to her home from her grocery shopping trip in Potwin. By her request Mrs. Joseph left the car to stop at her Angus cattle pen, a short distance from her house, and Mr. Brenner left her groceries on the porch. It is assumed that when she went to the house she could not find her house key. Apparently, she had made a futile attempt to enter by a window. Indications are that her death was due to exposure.

Mrs. Joseph was the foster daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Hughes, pioneer residents southwest of Potwin in Milton township. She gave devoted care to Mr. and Mrs. Hughes, and also to her foster brother, Ed Hughes, during his long illness.

At a birthday party she gave for Mrs. Hughes, the guests had so much pleasure that Mrs. Joseph decided to give an annual party on a large scale - the guests to include all persons who had attained the age of 65 and who lived or ever had lived in the Potwin area. She launched the first party fifty-two years age. The event was, and still is, an all-day affair, with an elaborate dinner and afternoon program, held in Potwin Community Hall. Her contemporaries the young matrons of the community cooperated wholeheartedly, and have carried on enthusiastically each year.

In September, Mrs. Joseph was - as has been the custom in recent years, the Special Guest at "Old People's Day." For this occasion, she adhered to her annual custom or purchasing a new wardrobe and getting "the works" at a beauty shop; and in pictures of the event was shown proudly wearing a corsage of flowers - a gift from an appreciative community.

Although 83 years of age, Mrs. Joseph had continued active on her ranch, feeding her large herd of prize Angus cattle and looking after extensive property interests. Friends long had importuned her to sell the stock and move to town or city. Invariably, she countered with one question "And give up my cattle?" Her church affiliation was the Presbyterian. She was the foster sister of the late George F. Hughes of El Dorado and an aunt by marriage of Senator Charles Joseph of Potwin.

Mrs. Hughes was born December 18, 1880 in Milton Township. Her mother died when she was an infant at which time she became the Hughes' foster daughter.

The marriage of May Hughes and John Sidney Joseph, a banker and rancher, took place May 5, 1905. They were the parents of a talented daughter, Thelma, who married M. B. (Buddy) Armer of Wichita. Her death occurred unexpectedly in Santa Fe, New mexico, thirteen years ago. As a young girl, Mrs. Armer was chosen queen of one of the nationally famous Butler County Kaffir Corn Carnivals. Later, she studied in New York City and appeared in stage plays on Broadway.

Mr. Joseph's death occurred in October of 1936.

Services for Mrs. Joseph were held Saturday at the Lamb Mortuary in Whitewater, the Rev. Gary Appleton, pastor of the Potwin Methodist Church, officiating.

Orin Moore, the soloist was accompanied by Mrs.Wayne Brainerd, organist. Final rites were at Santa Fe, New Mexico, as were those of her husband and daughter. (El Dorado Times, November 21, 1963
