McLAIN, WARREN MAXWELL

McLain, Warren Maxwell, 86, died Friday, April 26, 2002. Service 1 p.m. Wednesday, First Christian Church; interment following at McGill Cemetery.

Mr. McLain was born Aug. 28, 1915, the son of Arthur M. and Hazel Maxwell McLain. His mother, Hazel, died in the flu epidemic of 1919 and because of this tragedy he and his sister were raised by their grandparents, Guy and Mary Maxwell. He attended school in Potwin and graduated from high school. He was united in marriage to his high school girlfriend, Doris Kimberlin on Dec. 19, 1934 in Wichita. They started farming on the Hughes farm where they lived for14 years. They then moved to the Maxwell Farm in 1954 and lived there until 1996, when they sold the farm and moved to El Dorado.

Mr. McLain was very active in the First Christian Church and had served as deacon, an elder, trustee and board chairman. For many years he served on the Township Board, the Water District and the Board of Wheatstate Manor as it was being constructed. He was the president of Potwin Pride, a longtime Lions Club member and 4-H leader. He was a 50 year member and the past master of Patmos Masonic Lodge, No. 97, A.F. & A.M., a 50 year member and past Worthy Patron of the Order of the Eastern Star. He loved to play cards at the senior citizens center and fishing.

Survivors: wife, Doris; son and daughter-in-law, David and Lana McLain of Wichita; sister, Mary Whiteside of El Dorado; grandchildren, Renee, Kathi, Sharon, Linda, Todd; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; four half-sisters; one half-brother. RICE, JULIA ANNE VAUGHN (SCRIVNER)

Rice, Julia Anne Vaughn (Scrivner), 94, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002. Service 11 a.m. today, Downing & Lahey Mortuary East, Wichita; interment will follow at McGill Cemetery, Potwin.

Mrs. Rice was born Sept. 21, 1907 in Millers Creek, Ky., the youngest of 12 children born to the late Sylvester and Caroline (Howe) Scrivner.

On Dec. 19, 1927 in Olathe, she married Ronald Raymond Rice. He preceded her in death on Aug. 5, 1984. She was a homemaker and along with her husband, owned car dealerships in Florence, Abilene and El Dorado from the 1930's to 1978.

Mrs. Rice made her home in Abilene from 1939 until the present. She was a member of First Christian Church, Abilene. She was a sponsor of Jobs Daughters and helped with her children's activities as they were growing up.

Preceded in death by son, Fredrick Dean Rice; six brothers and five sisters.

Survivors: daughter and son-in-law, Sally and Wheat Collingwood of Wichita; grandchildren, Rick Rice, Jeff Rice, Julie Collingwood Blumenthal; great-gr andchild, Sarah Bay Blumenthal.
