Death Comes to Benjamin McGahan

Benjamin Harrison McGahan, 74, of 406 North Star street, died this morning at St. Joseph's hospital. Funeral arrangements will be announced through the Kirby Funeral home.

Mr. McGahan had lived in and near El Dorado much of his life. He was born near Macon, Mo., on Sept. 6, 1892, and was educated in the El Dorado schools.

He worked on farms and was employed by the Santa Fe railway several years and at the municipal water department until retiring in 1957.

He was a member of the Foursquare Gospel church.

Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Sara J. Houston, Leroy, Kan.; four brothers, Walter L. McGahan of Los Angeles, Calif., Claude R. McGahan, 406 North Star, Harvey W. McGahan, Springfield, Mo., and Isaac W. McGahan, 311 West Carr avenue. Two sisters and two brothers preceded Mr. McGahan in death. McGAHAN, ISAAC W.

Isaac W. McGahan Dies At Hospital

Isaac W. McGahan, 71, of 211 West Carr, died Friday evening at Allen Memorial Hospital.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Sunset Lawns Cemetery under the direction of the Kirby Funeral Home.

Mr. McGahan was born Oct. 29, 1904, in Macon County, Mo., the son of Charles and Rachel Griffith McGahan. He moved to El Dorado with his parents while an infant and lived the remainder of his life in El Dorado and Whitewater. He was a retired road maintenance employee of Butler County.

He married Opal Shrader March 31, 1924, in El Dorado, who survives. Other survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Mary Farquer, 627 North Summit; a sister, Mrs. Charles Houston of LeRoy; three brothers, Walter of West Los Angeles, Calif., Claude of 406 North Star and Wayne of Springfield, Mo. McGAHAN, MARY

Mrs. Mary McGahan Dies; Rites Tomorrow

Mrs. Mary McGahan, 79, 1035 Cherokee, a resident of El Dorado for 39 years, died here yesterday after a lengthy illness.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Byrd-Snodgrass Funeral Home, with Rev. Clarence Murphy, pastor of the Foursquare Gospel Church, officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Lawns Cemetery.

Mrs. McGahan was born June 3, 1877 in Ironton, Mo. and married W.V. McGahan on March 3, 1895 at Winona, Mo. She came to Butler County in 1895 and had lived in the county and here since then. She was a member of the Christian church.

Surviving are four daughters, Miss Hazel McGahan, of the home, Mrs. Dora Cooley, 115 North Griffith, Mrs. Fred Cooley, 527 North Star, and Mrs. R.E. Robinson, Route 2, one son, Fred McGahan, Towanda; three sisters, Mrs. Clinthy Mytes, Centerville Mo., Mrs. Fannie Kyle and Mrs. Rose Peal, both of Breckinridge, Texas; two brothers, George Crafton, Van Buren, Mo., and Joe Crafton, Wichita. McGAHAN, OPAL R.

Opal R. (Mrs. Ike) McGahan, age 80, of El Dorado, died Sunday evening, April 9, 1989, at Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital. Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Carlson's Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Sunset Lawns Cemetery.

Mrs. McGahan was born Nov. 17, 1908, at El Dorado, the daughter of John and Madge Snyder Shrader. She spent all her life in Butler County, and lived in Whitewater for a number of years. She was a member of the Southern Baptist Church and the Royal Neighbors. She married Ike McGahan in El Dorado, and he preceded her in death.

Survivors include one brother, Bill Shrader of Grove, Okla.; two sisters, Faye P. Heman of Burns and Jenevieve Lee of Grove, Okla; and several nieces and nephews.

McGAHAN, RACHAEL J.

Mrs. Rachael J. McGahan, aged 52 years, who has made her home in this section of the county for the past sixteen years, died yesterday afternoon at a Wichita hospital following an attack of pneumonia which she contracted Tuesday. Mrs. McGahan was in the hospital for treatment at the time, having been operated on about seven weeks ago. She was getting along fairly well, however, when the new disease was contracted causing her death.

Mrs. McGahan is survived by five sons, Ben, Walter, Claude, Wayne and Isaac, all of whom live at home and two daughters, Mrs. Charles Houston and Mrs. B.O. Taylor, of Leroy, Kansas. The body was sent here this morning for burial and funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at the grave in West cemetery at 2:30 o'clock. The McGahan's have lived on the Teter farm three miles northeast of town for some time and are well known in that community.

The death of Mrs. McGahan recalls the fatal accident that occurred to Mr. McGahan just three years ago yesterday. He was hauling a load of feed when he slipped from the wagon and one of the mules hitched to it kicked him in the head, causing his death a few hours later. McGAHAN, WILLIAM V.

William V. McGahan Dies Here Saturday

William Valentine McGahan, aged 82 years, a resident of Butler County most of his life, died late Saturday afternoon at his home, 1035 Cherokee Street, following an illness of only four days.

Mr. McGahan, who was a retired farmer, was born on February 23, 1864, in Cole County, Ill. He had lived in El Dorado for 51 years and Butler County 73. He also had resided in Illinois and Missouri for a few years. Mr. McGahan was married on March 3, 1895, to Mary Crafton at Winona, Mo. He was a member of the Christian Church.

Mr. McGahan is survived by his widow, four daughters, Mrs. Bert Cooley, of El Dorado; Mrs. Fred Cooley, of El Dorado; Mrs. Ralph Robinson, of El Dorado; and Miss Hazel McGahan, of El Dorado; a son, Fred McGahan, of Towanda; three brothers, L.D. McGahan, of Burns; Riley McGahan, of Broken Bow, Okla., and Harvey McGahan, of Milo, Okla.; a sister, Mrs. N.E. Beatty, of Sand Springs, Okla., 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the Byrd Funeral Home, with Rev. Arloe Snodgrass, pastor of the Benton Christian Church, in charge. Interment will be made in the Sunset Lawns Cemetery. (The El Dorado Times, Monday, July 22, 1946. Submitted by Diana Herrman)

MEAD, LORNA L.

Lorna L. Mead, 72, of El Dorado, died Thursday, Aug. 30, 2007 at Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital.

Visitation with the family will be from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Carlson Funeral Home. There will be no services.

She was born Feb. 4, 1935 at Stafford, the daughter of Clifford P. and Gracie Dykstra Stanford. She was a homemaker and had lived in El Dorado for 58 years. She loved to play Bingo.

On April 8, 1955, she was married to Donald Mead at Rosalia.

Survivors include: her husband of the home; three daughters, Donna Jerome of Wichita, Dianna Houser and Julie Manion, both of El Dorado; a brother, Dale Sanford of Anthony; a sister, Bervelee Bratton of Naples, Fla.; 12 grandchildren, Chastity L. Carter, Donald M. Carter, Theodore P. Carter, Chad E. Carter, Keith B. Burner, Lorna D. and Anthony R. Wright, Nicole A. Duff, Robyn R. Cantu, Robert C. Gilliland, Christie J. Gilliland, Stephanie R. Manion and Elizabeth M. Manion; and 16 great-grandchildren.

MILLER, RAY GEORGE

Ray George Miller, 80, died Thursday, Aug. 30, 2007 at Mountain Home.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at East Side Baptist Church, with Revs. J.R. Cousins, Jon Gilbert and Ulysses Vandermolen officiating. Burial will be in Kirby's Tucker Memorial Cemetery Mausoleum. Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m., with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 today at Kirby and Family Funeral Home.

He is survived by his wife, Emma; daughter, Debbie (Joel) Holth of Mountain Home; son, Ross (Ilene) Miller of Dawsonville, Ga.; four grandchildren, Erik and Michael Holth of Mountain Home and Bryan and Matt Miller of Dawsonville; a sister, Margaret Golden of Perry, Okla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Hospice House, Leukemia/Lymphoma Society of America or Korean War Memorial.

MORRIS, JOSEPH A. "JACK"

Joseph Alfred "Jack" Morris, a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2007.

Services were held Monday, Aug. 27, 2007 at Klein Funeral Home on Champion Forest Drive in Houston, with graveside services following at Veterans Administration Houston National Cemetery.

Joe "Jack" Morris was born Jan. 12, 1921 in El Dorado, to Wilbur and Anna Morris.

After graduating from El Dorado High School in 1939, Joe learned to fly and joined the Civil Air Patrol. While working as a draftsman at Beech Aircraft Company in Wichita, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and piloted B-17 missions during WWII. After the war, Joe became a petroleum engineer, receiving his degree from the University of Oklahoma in 1949. He began a 35-year career with Mobil Oil Corporation, moving throughout Texas and spending the final 31 years of his life in Houston.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Marjorie; daughter, Kathy Morris Breazeale and husband Leighton of Pensacola, Fla.; son, Steve Morris and wife Karen of Houston; son, Jack Morris and wife Deena of Warren, Texas; step-daughter, Betty Duncan Cooper and husband Richard of Denton, Texas; sister, Rosamond Morris Livingston of El Dorado; niece, Susan Livingston of El Dorado; nephew, David Livingston and wife Jan of Tulsa, Okla.; cousin, Warren Morris and wife Carolyn of Tulsa; and he was "Papa Joe" to nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mildred Smith Morris; and infant daughter, Nancy Morris.

Joe's love for God and country are reflected in his active membership in Champion Forest Baptist Church, Gideons International and The American Legion.

MYSHKA, THOMAS "T.J."

Thomas "T. J." Myshka, 71, retired electrical engineer, died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2007.

The Rosary will be at 8 p.m. Friday, with the funeral mass at 10 a.m. Saturday, both at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church.

T. J. served his country in the US Navy from 1964-1968. He had a bachelor's degree of electrical engineering, working for Hutchinson Hospital as a clinical engineer before retiring as a liaison/electrical engineer with Boeing Aircraft. He also had a master's in theology from Tulsa University. He was very active in the Boy Scouts of America as a Cub, Weblo and Eagle Scout. He was Scout Master for both Scouts and Explorers in California, and he was a member of the "Order of the Arrow."

T. J. was a prominent leader in a prayer group, RCIA and Bible study. He also served as a rosary leader, Eucharistic minister, and trainer/director of altar servers. T.J. was regular in perpetual adoration, and also filled in whenever needed.

Survivors include: his wife, Mary; sons, Michael J. Myshka of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and Paul Myshka of Wichita; brother, Bob (Bruxie) Myshka of Jonesboro; nephew, Dr. James (Kimberly) Myshka of Fayetteville, Ark.; and niece, Dr. Susan Myshka of Jonesboro.

MITCHELL, PERRY LEE

Funeral services for Perry Lee Mitchell, 72, Wichita, a former El Doradoan, who died Wednesday at Halstead were held Saturday at the Kirby Funeral Home. Rev. Clayton W. Hildebrand, pastor of the First Christian church, officiated.

William C. Lange sang "Old Rugged Cross" and "Going Home." He was accompanied by Mrs. H. W. Bullerdiek at the organ.

Pallbearers were Robert McClellan, Chester Folmsbee, A. E. Fetrow, Boyd Durham, Claude McGuirk and John Davis.

Flower bearers were Vesta Fern Marshall, Arvilla Fetrow, Erma Fetrow, Daisy Anderson and Erma Rake.

Burial with military honors was in Belle Vista cemetery. The United Spanish war Veterans of Wichita was in charge and was assisted by members of the American legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Harold Shoopman was commander of the detail. Ralph Cochran and Murray Gilkeson were color guards and James Martin and Wilbur B. Morris were the color bearers. The firing squad was comprised of John Adams, John Johnson, Lynn Creed, and M. E. Simon, Lee Lazarus and Jack Crumrine were buglers. (El Dorado Times, January 26, 1953, front page)

MITCHELL, MRS. PERRY L.

Mrs. Perry L. Mitchell of Fort Dodge, died here early this morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Earl Boydston, 522 North Denver street, following an illness of 16 days. She was 56 years old.

Mrs. Mitchell came to El Dorado June 1 to visit her daughter and was stricken shortly after her arrival. She was well known here as she had lived in the Leon and El Dorado communities all her life until the past three years.

Mrs. Mitchell was born at Leon July 19, 1883 and was married there August 27, 1899. She was a member of the Adventist Church and also belonged to the Auxiliary of the Spanish-American War veterans.

Surviving are her husband; the daughter here; seven sons, Alva M., Virgil, Russell and J. D. of Manhattan Beach, Calif., and Roy, of San Francisco, Calif., and seven grandchildren. Three other sons died in infancy.
