Walter Gail Raiguel, 78, of Augusta, retired oil field pumper, died Friday, Jan. 1, 1988. Service is scheduled
for 2 p.m. Monday, Dunsford Funeral Home in Augusta.
Survivors include his wife, Ruby V., sisters, Vineta Marker of Ellinwood, Elaine Beneke of Newbury Park, Calif.

MARY MAY
Mary May Ralston, age 89, of Cunningham and formerly of El Dorado, died Tuesday evening, March 7,1989, at the Hilltop
Manor Nursing Center in Cunningham. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Sunset Lawns Cemetery.
Mrs. Ralston was born July 4, 1899 in Blackford County, Ind., the daughter of Frank and May (Hutchinson) Higgins.
After her marriage to Wesley Ralston, Feb. 28, 1917, they moved to El Dorado. They lived here until 1948, when
they moved to Cunningham to be near her daughter. Mrs. Ralston was a former member of the Nazarene Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Dorothy Ralston Cranmer of Wichita, Doris Bidwell of Cunningham; two half-sisters,
Alice Weaver and Grace Lockwood, both of Bluffton, Ind., a special nephew, Verne Higgins of Wichita; five grandchildren,
and eight great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Ralston was preceded in death by her husband in 1970 two infant children, and two brothers. Kirby-Morris Funeral

Arleta Ramsey, 77, of Eureka, homemaker and sister of Mary Seymour of El Dorado, died Thursday, Feb. 25, 1988.
Service was a 2 p.m. today at Campbell Funeral Home in Eureka.
Other survivors include a son, George of Eureka; and one grandson.

Isabella V. Ramsey, 94, of Wichita, died July 26, 1988 at the Catholic Care Center in Wichita. No services are
scheduled.
She was born July 30, 1893, in El Dorado, the daughter of Miller M. and Addie Umpsted Van Denberger. She was married
to Howard G. Ramsey on October 2, 1919. He died in 1967.
She was preceded in death by three brothers.
A memorial has been established with the Catholic Care Center, 3411 E. Zimmerly, Wichita. Lakeview Funeral Home

Virgil G. "Bill" Randall, 78, of Winfield, died Monday, August 22, 1988 at his home. Funeral services
are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday at Miles Memorial Chapel in Winfield. Burial will be at Mt. Vernon Cemetery
in Winfield.
Survivors include his wife, Ethyl, sons, Don and Bruce "Bud" of Winfield, daughters, Donna McArtor of

Pauline E. Rash, age 74, of El Dorado, died Tuesday, March 7, 1989, at the El Dorado Nursing Center. Graveside
services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Leon Cemetery. Burial will follow. The Rev. Art Wilson will officiate at
the services.
She was born Sept. 1, 1914, at Copan, Okla., the daughter of Oscar and Ethel Coulson Wiegns. She was a homemaker
and had lived in El Dorado for the past 20 years, living previously in the Augusta and Leon area. She married George
Rash, March 26, 1932 at Pawhuska, Okla. He preceded her in death May 1, 1969.
Survivors include several nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and two sisters.

Lola Pearl Roll, 46, Belle Plaine, died Saturday, April 23, 1988 at St. Joseph Medical Center in Wichita. She was
a homemaker. Graveside services are 10 a.m. Thursday at Belle Plaine Cemetery.
Survivors include her husband, James, three sons, Ted Spohn of Haysville, James Roll Jr. of Tecumseh, Okla., Billy
Joe Roll of Belle Plaine, one daughter, Joy Lynn Swaggerty of Shawnee, Okla., half sister, Wilma Chapen of Florence,
parents, Walter and Lorie Reinhart of El Dorado, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

ROSE, ELMER
P.
Col. Elmer P. Rose, 87, of San Antonio, Texas, died Tuesday, Feb. 23, 1988. He was a graduate of Newton High School
and retired from the U. S. Air Force.
Services were held in San Antonio Feb. 26 at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery with full military honors.
He was married to Iva Claypool, of the Potwin-Whitewater area, who survives. He served in World War I and was one
of the first four Delta Airlines Pilots. In his 30 year career, as a flyer and administrator he served in the Philippines,
Panama and the United States. He was seriously wounded at Hickman Field in Hawaii in the attack of Pearl Harbor.

CHARLES WILLIAM
Charles William Ross, 40, of Augusta, died Tuesday, May 24, 1988, at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita. He was burned
in a refinery accident last month. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Dunsford Funeral Home in Augusta. The
Rev. George Goudie will officiate. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
Mr. Ross was born November 2, 1947 at Indianola, Iowa, the son of William and Charlotte Ross. He was married February
9, 1980 in Great Bend, to Karen Souder. Mr. Ross was employed by Aime Contracting Co. as a pipefitter.
Survivors include his wife, Karen, two sons, David of Wagner, Okla., and Bryan of the home; one daughter, Candace
of the home, one brother, Kenneth of Augusta, four sisters, Joyce Thomas of Towanda, Kathy Sims of Andover; Shirley
Harding and Carol Jordan both of Augusta and his parents, William and Charlotte Ross of Augusta.

David J. Ross, 65, of Wichita, died Sunday, July 10 at the V. A. Hospital in Wichita. Private services will be
held.
He was born August 23, 1922 at Bushnell, Illinois, the son of David J. and Etha Glines Ross. He spent most of his
life in Bushnell, Illinois, and had lived for the past two years in Wichita. He was a member of the T. J. Pickett
Masonic Lodge at Bushnell and had served in the Air Force during World War II in the European Theatre of War.
Survivors include two cousins, Lewis Sears of Leon and Maxine Raby of Bushnell, Ill.

Mary Elizabeth Shook, 74, 325 Hill Crest, died Monday at Allen Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be at 10

Cemetery, Bartlesville, Okla.
Born September 4, 1897, in Chanute, she married Leslie Shook, September 5, 1961 in Newkirk, Okla. She moved to
El Dorado from Bartlesville in 1952.
She was a member of the Christian Church.
Survivors include her husband of the home, one daughter, Mrs. Ema Jo Willaby, Oklahoma City, Okla., two sons, A.
T. Weigan, Indpendence, MO., H. P. San Antonio, Tex., two stepsons, William Shook, Mulvane and James Shook, Mulvane
and James Shook, Athens, Ga., two brothers, L.O. King, Winfield, and Clarence King, Avant, Okla., nine grandchildren
and six great-grandchildren.

Mrs. E. J. G. (Beatrice) Shults, 85, 125 North Summit, died Wednesday in St. Joseph's hospital, Houston, Tex. Funeral
services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Catholic church. Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Friday
at Kirby Funeral Home chapel. Burial will be at Sunset Lawns cemetery.
Born June 3, 1886, at St. Peter, Minn., she married Dr. Edwin J. Gordon Shults on October 6, 1909, at Fargo, N.
D. Dr. Shults died in 1964.
She had lived in El Dorado since 1924.
She was a member of St. John's Catholic Church.
Survivors include a daughter Mrs. W. E. (Charlotte) Hoelscher, Houston and one son, Richard Kneefe Shults, Corpus
Christi, Tex.
One son, seven sisters and two brothers preceded her in death.

Mrs. Anna M. Schultz, 70, of Peabody, died Tuesday at the home of her brother in El Dorado.
Funeral services are pending and will be announced through the Kirby Funeral Home.
Born June 15, 1900, at Scranton, Kan., she was married to A. Albert Schutlz on Dec. 29, 1917 at Kansas City, Mo.
He died in 1957.
Mrs. Schultz had been a resident of Peabody for about six months, moving there from Wichita. She was a resident
of El Dorado from 1917 until 1950.
She was a member of the Gideon Baptist Church at Wichita.
She is survived by four sons, Albert F. Schultz and Edward E. Schutlz, both of Albuquerque, N.M., William A. Schultz
of California and Donald B. Schultz of Japan; two sisters, Mrs. Harold Palmer of 314 North Gordy and Mrs. J. D.
Barrett of Bartlesville, Okla., two brothers, Alvin Kilgore of 125 North Arthur, and Elmer Kilgore of Cicero, Ill.

Graveside services for Mrs. Nora N. Smith, 87, of Loveland, Colo., who died there Saturday, will be conducted at
3 p.m. Wednesday at the Little Walnut Baptist Church cemetery east of Leon.

Born Feb. 17, 1883, in Butler county, she was married to Burt R. Smith, a retired banker in 1941 at Reece, Kan.
They moved to Loveland in 1949. Prior to her marriage, she taught school in Butler county for four years.
She was a member of the Presbyterian church in Loveland and of the Spanish-American War Veterans auxiliary.
Survivors include two step-daughters, Mrs. Homer DaVault of Pratt, Kan., and Mrs. Carol Little, of Wichita; two
nieces, Mrs. Ernest Sloan and Mrs. Carl Irick, both of Wichita, and six nephews, Wayne Taliaferro of El Dorado,
Howard Taliaferro of Matfield Green, Frank Taliaferro of Severy, Robert M. Taliaferro of Derby, Raymond Taliaferro
of Severy, and Harold Taliaferro of Wisconsin.

VINCENT
Vincent Smith, 79, and pioneer, died at his home near Andover Friday, from heart failure. He came to this part
of Kansas in 1868 and was one of the first settlers to break sod west of the Walnut River.
Mr. Smith is survived by his widow and two daughters, Mrs. A. R. Wattles and Mrs. M. D. Ayres of Andover.

SPENCER, LUCINDA R.
Funeral services for Mrs. Lucinda R. Spencer, 70, of 901 Walnut, will be conducted Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Dietz
Colonial Chapel. Mrs. Spencer died Tuesday at Allen Memorial Hospital.
Born March 7, 1900, at Clarendon, Ark., she was married to Roosevelt Epperson in 1928. Mr. Epperson died in 1944.
On Jan. 13, 1948, she was married to Samuel Spencer. He died Jan. 19, 1953.
Mrs. Spencer had been a resident of El Dorado for 40 years, moving here from Arkansas.
She was a member of the Second Baptist Church.
She is survived by five sisters, Mrs. Emma Walton of Little Rock, Ark., Mrs. Mattie Barnes of Tulsa, Okla., Mrs.
Beatrice Banks of River Rouge, Mich., and Mrs. Pearlie Jackson and Mrs. Mabel Countryman, both Detroit, Mich.
She was preceded in death by two sisters and four brothers.

Mrs. Jessie Stanton, 80, a former El Doradoan, died July 29 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Frances Martin of
Fort Worth, Tex.
Funeral services were conducted Aug. 3 at the Lucas Memorial Chapel in Fort Worth, with the Rev. Don Smotherman,
of the Riverside Christian church, officiating.
The organist was Billy Grable Soloist was Mrs. Elena Turney, who sang "No Night There," and "Whispering
Hope."
Mrs. Stanton was born in Crawford County, Ill., on March 4, 1890. She was a resident of El Dorado from 1918 until
November 1954, when she moved to Santa Fe, N.M. She had resided in Fort Worth for the past year.
She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Martin; four sons, Robert J. Stanton of San Francisco, Vernon D. Stanton of
Georgetown, Ontario, Canada, Wayne D. Stanton of Santa Fe, N.M., and Donald E. Stanton of San Antonio, Tex.; three
sisters, Mrs. Flossie Bond of Flat Rock, Ill., and Mrs. Buena Smiley of Glendale, Calif. There are 10 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William J. Stanton who died in 1935 and by two sons.

Funeral services for Navy Lt. Leon R. Swaim, of San Diego, Calif., son of Charles Swaim of El Dorado were conducted
Tuesday at the Konantz Funeral Home at Fort Scott.
Lieutenant Swaim was killed Thursday in the crash of a military plane in Dallas.
Other survivors include his wife, Cynthia of San Diego; a son, Lance, of the home; his mother, Mrs. Mary A. Hembree
of Fort Scott; four brothers, Charles Swaim of Benton Harbor, Mich., Dallas Swaim and Wendell Swaim, both of Detroit,

William (Gilbert) Swank, 70, 301 North Residence, died this morning at Knutson Manor. Funeral services will be
at 10 a.m. Monday at Kirby Funeral Home chapel. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Monday at the Hill City, Kan.,
cemetery.
Born June 27, 1901 at Barnard, Kan., he married Nina Egee in 1929. She died in 1932. He married Hazel Jenkins in
1933 at Oberlin.
He moved from Barnard to Hill City in 1918. He moved to El Dorado from Hill City in 1948. He was a retired mechanic.
He was formerly employed at McClure's, International Harvester and Hogoboom's.
Survivors include his wife, Hazel of the home, four daughters, Mrs. Nina Lee Stirn, Grand Island, Neb., Mrs. Esther
Mae Worchester, Hill City, Mrs. Emma Marley, Benton and Mrs. Sally Garfield, Harrington, two sons, Charles Gilbert
Swank, Blue Stem Trailer court, and Standley Swank, 615 Park; one sister, Mrs. Marjorie Zohner, Hill City and one
brother, Milton W. Swank, Denver, Colo., and 21 grandchildren.

TETER, ALVA
Services for Alva Teter, 89, who spent most of his life in Butler and Greenwood counties, and who died Monday,
February 22, were held Wednesday at the Dietz-Pittman Funeral Home. Dr. O. Ray Cook officiating. Interment was
in Bella Vista Cemetery.
Born in Portland, Oregon, November 10, 1870, Mr. Teter was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Washington Teter, who first came
to Butler county in 1865. They returned to Kansas when Alva Teter was two years old and settled on a claim on the
west ranch of Fall River.
After the death of his mother, Mr. Teter lived for several years with his grandparents, the late Mr. and Mrs. John
Teter. He was married in 1898 to Nellie May Kimball who died in 1943.
Mr. Teter purchased a farm on Cole Creek where he and Mrs. Teter lived forty years. After her death he moved to
EL Dorado and lived at 1102 Orient. For the past few years he had lived at a convalescent home.
Surviving are a daughter Mrs. Lucy Hearne of Truth or Consequences, N.M., a half-brother, and two half-sisters,
Isaac Teter of Tacoma, Wash., Mrs. Delia Becker, Carthage, Mo., and Mrs. Josephine Collins of Pocatello, Idaho.

EDWARD G.
Edward G. Towne, aged 79 years retired farmer died last evening at his home in Rosalia following an illness of
four years, although his condition had been serious only the past five months.
Mr. Towne who had resided in the Rosalia Community for the past 20 years, was born on July 10, 1865 at Perkin,
Ill. He was married to Miss Mary C. Jackson at Sedalia, Mo., in March 1925. He was a member of the Free Will Baptist
Church at Shell City.
Mr. Towne is survived by his widow, five daughters, Mrs. M. M. Hefton of Redfield, Miss Nellie Towne, of El Dorado,
Mrs. Roy Williams of El Dorado, Mrs. W. S. Seymour of Oil Hill, and Mrs. Mary Ellen Liggett of El Dorado; two sons,
S. V. Towne of Canon City, Colo., and T. Sgt. Paul E. Towne who is home on furlough; 21 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren
and a brother Eugene Towne of Shell City.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the Rosalia Methodist Church with Rev. T. F.
Swanson, pastor in charge and interment will be made in the Blankinship Cemetery.

Services for Mrs. Pete (Laura) Unruh, 80, 1015 North Denver, were held Wednesday afternoon at Dietz-Carlson Funeral
Home. She died Sunday.
The Rev. Marvin Bower, pastor of the Cassoday United Methodist Church, officiated. Mrs. A. J. Brazil at the organ
played the prelude and the postlude. Darryl Patten sang "No Tears in Heaven," and "What A Friend
We Have In Jesus."
Casket bearers were Douglas Unruh, Allen Unruh, Jim Unruh, Frank Rohmeyer, Lee Dunning and Don Guilliams.
Honorary bearers were Eric Unruh, Mark Nuttle, Robert Longyear, Robert James, Lewie Cooper, Jerry Unruh, James
Morris and Donald Unruh.

Mrs. Margaret Walsh, 90, a former resident of El Dorado died Thursday at Tucson, Ariz., after a short illness.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Dietz-Pittman Colonial Chapel, with Dr. Joe Riley
Burns, pastor of the First Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Lawns Cemetery.
Mrs. Walsh was the mother of Edward S. Walsh, 402 North Washington Street, and resided in El Dorado from 1925 to
1936 when she moved to Wichita.
Mrs. Walsh was born Dec. 5, 1875, at McAlester, Okla., and was married to James T. Walsh at Butler, Mo., on Dec.
25, 1890. He preceded her in death Oct. 1, 1937. She came to El Dorado from Peabody, where she had lived seven
years. Prior to that she lived at Hutchinson and Wichita. She moved to Tucson in 1947. Mrs. Walsh was a member
of the Methodist Church at Tucson.
Other survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Lillian Berry, Tucson, and Mrs. Lillian Berry, Tucson, and Mrs. Agnes Miller,
Omaha; four sisters, Mrs. Jane Valentine, Mrs. Ellen May and Mrs. Jean Rose all of Wichita, and Mrs. Laura Belle
Cubley, Amarillo, Tex. There are five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by an

VERNON OGLE
Vernon Ogle Walters, 75, of rural Burns, widely known farmer and conservationist, died Monday at Allen Memorial
Hospital after a short illness.
He was a director of the Soil Conservation District, chairman of Butler County CROP (Christian Rural Overseas Program),
an organizer of the Upper Walnut Watershed Association and agriculture representative of Lincoln Township to the
Butler County Extension Council.
He was a member of the DeGraff Presbyterian Church of which he was a trustee and elder.
Mrs. Walters was born July 7, 1899 in Hiwatha, the son of Banner and Maude Walters. He married Mazella Moore, Oct.
7, 1937 in Wellington.
Survivors are his wife, of the home Route 1, Burns; a son, Carroll Walters, Route 1, Burns; two daughters, Mrs.
Vivian Ruckert, DeSoto and Mrs. Velda Hodges of Lebo; a brother, Alan Walters, Cassoday; two sisters, Mrs. Hazel
Adams, El Segundo, Calif., and Miss Grace Walters, Nowata, Okla., and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister and a grandson, Link Hodges.

Geraldine (Jerry) Welles, 63, of Landers, Calif., and formerly of El Dorado, died Monday, Feb. 15, 1987 in Palm

Calif.
She was born Dec. 2, 1923, at Hartford, Ark., the daughter of Claud and Sarah Hammons. In January of 1987 she moved
to Landers from El Dorado, where she had lived since 1985.

Services for Geraldine (Jerry) Welles, 63, of Landers, Calif., and formerly of El Dorado and mother of Larry Oxford,
El Dorado, were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, 1987 at Mountain Valley Memorial Park in Joshua Tree, Calif.
She died Monday, Feb. 5 in Palm Springs, Calif.
She was born Dec. 2, 1923, at Hartford, Ark., the daughter of Claud and Sarah Hammons. In January of 1987 she moved
to Landers from El Dorado, where she had lived since 1985.
She was a homemaker.
She is also survived by her husband, George Welles of Landers; a daughter, Joan Graham of Penn Valley, Calif.,
brothers, Weldon Hammon of Torrance, Calif., William Hammon of Wichita and Don Hammon of Mansfield, Ark., sisters,
Lorraine Newman of Pouteau, Okla., Melba Stone of Huntington Beach, Calif., and Norma Black of Mansfield, Ark.;

Donald A. Welty, 52, of Denver, Colo., a native of the Cdassoday area, died Thursday, Nov. 12, 1987, at the Swedish
Medical Center in Englewood, Colo.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Cassoday Cemetery. Miles Memorial Chapel of Winfield is in
charge of arrangements.
He was born July 9, 1935, on a farm near Cassoday, the son of Lloyd and Emma Harrison Welty. He received his education
in El Dorado schools and lived in the Winfield area during the early 1960s where he worked as a diesel mechanic.
He had lived in Colorado the past 5 years where he was employed as an automotive refrigeration mechanic. He was
a member of the Baptist Church.
Survivors include daughter Kaylynn Welty of Red Cloud, Neb., two brothers, Sam of Oxford, Lloyd of Rock Springs,
Wyo.; sister Mrs. Janie Randall of Winfield; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorial has been established with the Wellington Chapter of Alcoholic Anonymous. (El Dorado

Orville L. Wendler, 55, of Cheney, Derby Oil Co., refinery pumper, died Wednesday, July 29, 1987. He was the brother
of Marvin Wendler of El Dorado.
Rosary at 7 p.m. today; funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, both at Downing & Lahey Mortuary, Wichita.
A memorial has been established with the Veterans Administration Hospital Medical Intensive Care Unit.
Survivors include his wife, Linda K., sons, Mark of Springfield, Mo., Michael of Wichita, daughters, Michelle Roberts,
Melody, both of Wichita, brothers, Marvin of El Dorado, Ronnie of Burlington, Colo., two grandchildren. (El Dorado

HELEN
Death of a four weeks old baby found dead in its crib by its mother at their farm home one mile north of Andover
Saturday, was contributed to natural causes by Butler County Coroner Dr. B. E. White
Butler County Undersheriff Dallas Babcock said Helen Wilson, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Wilson, was found
dead in her crib shortly before noon by Mrs. Wilson. An autopsy performed by Dr. White at El Dorado Memorial Hospital
revealed the child's lungs had not been functioning properly, he said. (Butler County News, Feb. 25, 1960)

MATTIE (MRS. OSCAR)
Services were held at Ellis for Mrs. Oscar (Mattie) Zachman, 45, a teacher, who died Saturday. She was a sister
of Mrs. Wilma Streiner of Cassoday.
Other survivors are her widower, a son and daughter, both of the home; her mother, Mrs. Martha Chapman of Gove;
three brothers and two other sisters. (El Dorado Times, July 24, 1975)
