ALFARO, VINCENT JOSEPH

An Augusta man, 20 year old Vincent Joseph Alfaro, was one of three persons killed Sunday morning in a head on crash on US-66 highway 16 miles west of Seligman, Arizona.

Besides Alfaro, the Arizona Department of Public Safety identified the victims as Carroll M. Stanley, 20, of Moore, Oklahoma and Karen L. Powles, 19, of Phoenix, Arizona.

Stanley was the driver of the other car involved, and Miss Powles was a passenger in the car driven by Vincent Alfrao.

Investigators said Alfaro's car apparently crossed the center line of the highway, striking Stanley's car head-on. The crash occurred on an open stretch of highway midway between Seligman and Kingman, in northwestern Arizona.

Alfaro was a pipeline worker, and a recent graduate of Augusta senior high school.

This was the second consecutive weekend when Augusta residents died in highway crashes. Two Augustans were killed during the long Labor Day weekend.

In Kansas during the past weekend, two Kansans died in traffic deaths. A Beattie man died in a one car crash in northeast Kansas and a Wichita man died Saturday in a one car crash near Turon on K-61 highway.

Police said Gary Hawkins, 19, of Beattie was killed when he fell asleep while driving on US-36 highway in Marshal County early Sunday morning. Bobby Wayne Nash, 31, of Wichita, was killed about 8 p.m. Saturday when his car missed a curve and flipped on K-61 near Turon, in Reno County.

Vincent Joseph Alfaro was born September 19, 1955 at Rantoul, Illinois, the son of Louis J. Alfaro and the formerly Mary O. Means. At the time of his death he ws employed on a pipeline at Wikieup, Arizona, in the northern part of that state.

He is survived by his parents brothers, Stephen and Dominic both of Augusta, sisters, Tonya and Christina of Augusta and grandparents, Mrs. Carmen Alfaro of Augusta and Mr. and Mrs. Aubrey Means of Monett, Missouri.

Funeral services will be a mass at 10 a.m. Wednesday, at the St. James Catholic Church, Rosary will be said at 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Dunsford Funeral Chapel. (Augusta Gazette, September 13, 1976)

APPLEGATE, MILDRED

Funeral services for Mildred Applegate, 66, 1420 Henry, will be 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the Dunsford Funeral Home Chapel.

Rev. Richard Axmann of the First Baptist Church will officiate and burial will be in the Elmwood Cemetery.

The widow of Oscar Applegate, a former mayor of Augusta, died Saturday at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

She was born June 20, 1912 at Springfield, Mo., as a daughter of Jesse and Ethel Catherine McNiel Yates.

She married Applegate in a ceremony at Springfield on June 23, 1928. He preceded her in death in July of 1976.

Survivors include two sons, Lester Don, and Dwight Nathan Applegate, both of Derby; a daughter, Mrs. Beulah Maxine Fillmore of Wichita, a brother, Ernest Yates of Springfield, Mo.; two sisters, Mrs. Gladys Scharnhorst of Springfield, and Mrs. Eva Baker, Fayetteville, Ark.; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Her memberships included Rebekahs, Eastern Star and the First Baptist Church. (Augusta Gazette, February 5, 1979)

AUBUCHON, JAMES BAZIL

James Bazil Aubuchon, 93, died Friday at the Augusta Medical Complex. He was born April 5, 1882 at Bonne Terre, Missouri, and was a retired employee of the Sun Ray Oil Co. He was a member of the Baptist Church and had lived here since 1922.

Surviving are sons, Lloyd, Alvin, Clyde and Thomas, all of Augusta; daughters, Mrs. Mildred Luney, Cassville, Missouri and Mrs. Pauline Riggs, Augusta, one brother, Jess of Webb City, Missouri; eight grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren.

One son, James Elmer Aubuchon, preceded him in death in 1975.

The funeral will beat 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Dunsford Funeral Chapel, the Rev. Paul Thompson officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery. (Augusta Gazette, January 9, 1976)

CLARK, RICHARD M.

Funeral services for Richard M. Clark, 68, of Temple, Texas, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Dunsford Funeral Chapel, the Rev. Vernon White officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.

Mr. Clark died Tuesday at the Veterans' Hospital in Temple, Texas. He was born July 29, 1908 in Augusta and was a retired farmer. Also Mr. Clark had been an oil well service operator at Lyons, Kansas.

Surviving are the widow, Edith Marie; brothers, Lloyd Clark of Leon, and Charles Clark of Augusta, sisters, Mrs. Lewis Jackson of Augusta and Mrs. Berneta Licklyter of Waco, Texas, and several nieces and nephews. (Augusta Gazette, March 17, 1977)

DAVIS, FAYE S.

Mrs. Faye S. Davis, 91, died Sunday at the Augusta Medical Complex. She was born in Delphos, Kansas, on September 10, 1884 and was a member of First United Methodist Church.

Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Maxine Blowey, Augusta, two granddaughters, and eight great-grandchildren. Her husband died in 1954 and one son Don, preceded her in death in 1964.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Dunsford Funeral Chapel, the Rev. John Saville officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Mausoleum. (Augusta Gazette, January 12, 1976)

GRIFFITH, JAMES FRANKLIN

Funeral services for James Franklin Griffith, 81, of Wichita, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Cochran Mortuary Chapel of the Roses, the Rev. Ronald C. Sloan officiating. Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. in Elmwood Cemetery, Augusta.

Mr. Griffith died Wednesday. He was a retired switchman for Southwestern Bell Telephone Co, and was born in Leon on March 17, 1895. He had lived in Wichita since 1929 and was a member of the Fairview Christian Church and the Telephone Pioneers.

Surviving are the widow, Eva; a son, Virgil of Wichita, a daughter, Mrs. Helen Starnes of Wichita, two brothers, Harold of El Dorado and Dennis of Liberal, and two sisters, Mrs. Grace Wilson and Mrs. Katie Dowell, both of Phoenix. (Augusta Gazette, March 17, 1977)

JACOBS, GRACE

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Elmwood Cemetery for Mrs. Grace Jacobs who died yesterday at Huntington Beach, Calif. Rev. V. V. White will officiate.

Mrs. Jacobs was preceded in death by her husband Corliss R. Jacobs.

Survivors include a daughter, Karen and her husband Ed Flynn; four grandchildren, Pat, John, Kelly and Matthew, all of Huntington Beach and a sister, Vera Cole of Salina.

Mrs. Jacobs was the daughter in law of Mrs. Wilma Murdick, Augusta, and the sister in law of Mr. and Mrs. Aubrey E. Martin of Augusta. (Augusta Gazette, July 13, 1979)

KENNEDY, RUTH SMOCK

Funeral services for Mrs. Ruth Smock Kennedy, 84, of Caldwell will be at 11 a.m. Monday in the First Presbyterian Church at Caldwell with burial at 3 p.m. in the Augusta Mausoleum. Mrs. Kennedy the widow of Frank Kennedy, died Thursday.

Survivors are brothers, Charles Smock of El Dorado and Jim Smock of Caldwell. The Schaeffer-Thompson Mortuary is in charge of arangements. (Augusta Gazette, March 11, 1977)

KERNS, FLOYD E.

Floyd E. Kerns, 43, of Wichita, a former Gates Learjet Corporationj employee and former Augusta resident died Tuesday.

Services were to have been held today at the Elmwood Cemetery at Augusta.

Survivors are a son, Terry Lee of Fort Riley, a daughter, Patricia Ann of New York City, his mother, Mrs. Fern Kerns of Augusta; two brothers, Ronald Segundo, Calif., and two sisters, Louetta Tabor of Moutnain View, Mo., and Rosetta Rodriguez of Augusta.

RIPPEE, HUEY L.

Huey L. Rippee, of 125 Broadway, died Thursday at Augusta Medical Complex. He was a retired still operator for Mobil Oil Corp. and had lived in Butler County since 1925.

Mr. Rippee was born February 19, 1901 at Rippee, Missouri. He was a member of the Church of Nazarene and was wed to the former Lola Singleton in Augusta in 1925.

Surviving are the widow: sons, Homer of Wichita and Dick of Augusta; daughters, Mrs. Virginia Winger of Augusta and Dorothy Ferguson of Mindeville, Jamaica; a brother, Ivy Rippee of Ava, Missouri; sisters, Ruth Edwards of Lake Isabella, California, Opal Franklin of Long Beach, California, Allie Deathridge of Exeter, California, Opal Singleton of Ava, Missouri and Dora Lakey of Dayton, Washington; ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Dunsford Funeral Chapel, the Rev. Amos Williams officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery. (Augusta Gazette, March 8, 1977)

SKILES, DOROTHY J. (MRS. ERNEST C.)

Dorothy J. (Mrs. Ernest C.) Skiles, 70, of Augusta, a retired elementary school teacher, died Saturday.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Dunsford Funeral Home at Augusta with entombment in the Elmwood Mausoleum at Augusta.

Mrs. Skiles was born May 18, 1908, in California, the daughter of Sterling and Jeanne Johnston. She married Ernest C. Skiles on May 9, 1942, at Tucumcari, N. M., and he died in 1971.

She is survived by four nieces. (Augusta Gazette, May 17, 1979)

SLODERBECK, JESSE L.

Jesse L. Sloderbeck, 89, of 2101 Dearborn, died Tuesday in Augusta Medical Complex. He was a retired employee of the Phillips Petroleum Corporation, and was born August 24, 1916 at Marion, Indiana. He was a member of the Christian Church.

Surviving are a son, Jack of Wichita; brothers, Earl of Noblesville, Indiana and Arthur, of Bluffton, Indiana; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Dunsford Funeral Home, the Rev. Richard Bacon officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery. (Augusta Gazette, March 16, 1977)

Funeral services for Jesse T. Sloderbeck, 89, of 2101 Dearborn, will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Dunsford Funeral Chapel, the Rev. Richard Bacon officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.

Mr. Sloderbeck died Tuesday. He was a retired employee of the Phillips Petroleum CO. and after retiring, was employed with the Beaumont Hotel for many years. He came here from Indiana in 1918 to speculate in oil leasing during the El Dorado oil boom. His wife, Henrietta, died in 1972.

Surviving are a son, Jack E. of Wichita; brothers, Earl of Noblesville, Indiana and Arthur of Bluffton, Indiana, grandchildren, Jack Jr., of El Dorado, Marcia of Ozark, Missouri, Jessica Mayfield of Augusta and Michael of Kansas City, Missouri and four great-grandchildren. VAN SCYOC, E. B.

Funeral services for E. B. Van Scyoc, 66, of Augusta, will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Dunsford Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Richard Bacon officiating. Burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery. Mr. Van Scyoc died Monday at the Augusta Medical Complex, Inc.

Mr. Van Scyoc, born in Collier, Kan., was retired from the Mobil Oil Co., and served with the U. S. Army during World War II. He was a member of the First Christian Church.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Elizabeth Chance; two daughters, Mrs. Martha Shaw and Mrs. Betty Carson, both of Wichita, a brother, Nyman of Augusta; a sister, Mrs. Nina Easter of Windsor, Mo., and four grandchildren.

A memorial fund has been established in his name with the Muscular Dystrophy Foundation. (Augusta Gazette, March 15, 1977)

VORHIES, LAUREL L.

Laurel L. Vorhies, 69, 100 Lakecrest, died Saturday at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita.

Services were at 3 p.m. today at the Dunsford Funeral Home. Rev. Richard Axmann and Rev. Vernon White officiated and burial was in the Elmwood Cemetery.

He was born Feb. 21, 1910 in Ottumwa, Ia., to Ernest and Faith Keen Vorhies. He married Eva Wilma Worenstaff in Osceola, Ia., on June 25, 1930.

Vorhies was a former engineer. He served as an inspector at Boeing. He was in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and Mystic Tie Lodge 74.

Survivors include his wife, Eva Wilma Vorhies of the home; four sons, Burlin Vorhies, Augusta, Marshall Vorhies, St. Louis, Mo., William Vorhies, Keokuk, Ia., and Maurice Vorhies, Centerville, Va.; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. (Augusta Gazette, August 8, 1979)

WATSON, ANDREW W.

Andrew W. Watson, 90, of Peabody and a former Augusta resident, died Saturday at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. Mr. Watson was a retired employee of the Mobil Oil Co.

He born August 15, 1885 in Prescott, Missouri. Before his retirement in 1950. Mr. Watson was an insulator and brickmason at Mobil. He was a member of Elks Lodge 1462.

Survivors include his widow, Ethel; three sons, Frank, Bert and Erbie Watson, all of Augusta; three brothers, Charlie, Kansas City, Mo., Harlan, Licking, Mo., and Walter, Odessa, Mo., one sister, Mrs. Belle Johnson, Houston, Mo., five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Dunsford Funeral Chapel, Augusta the Rev. Gerald Morris of Central Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
