BENNETT, JAMES JOSEPH "JIM"

Jim Bennett, 15, Killed in Crash of Motor Scooter and Car

Skull Fracture Fatal to Caney Boy about Two Hours Following Accident

James Joseph Bennett, 15-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. T. B. Bennett, who reside at the south edge of Caney on Highway 75, was injured fatally in a motor scooter-automobile crash just south of the city limits on the highway near his home at 6:55 o'clock yesterday morning.

The youth, a freshman in Caney high school, died at 9:20 o'clock in Scimeca Memorial hospital of a fractured skull. He was rushed to the hospital in a Graves ambulance.

Jim was carrier for the Bartlesville Examiner and was near the completion of his monring deliveries when the tragedy occurred.

He had made deliveries to Caney residences and had returned to his home to obtain papers that were to be sold in Caney business houses.

Tried to Retrieve Cap

According to Deputy Sheriff Ray Melton, who was near the scene of the accident and was among the first to arrive following the crash, James was riding north on his motor scooter when his cap blew off his head. He made a left turn according to the officer's information to retrieve the headpiece, and while doing so his motor scooter was struck by a 1942 Chevrolet 4-door sedan driving north by Edward Walford, Ramona, Okla., who was enroute to Caney to spend Easter with relatives.

Young Bennett was thrown from his machine and his head apparently struck a curbing. He never regained consciousness.

His mother glanced out a window of the Bennett home shortly after the crash and saw the boy in the street. She was among the first to reach his side.

Scene of the accident was near the Port of Entry.

The motor scooter was extensively damaged.

The tragedy enshrouded the entire community with shock and grief that a bright Easter Sunday sun could not obliterate.

Jim was a popular boy, not only among his schoolmates and teachers at Caney high school, but also with people of the town who respected him for his energy and a shy, friendly smile. He arose early every morning to carry his paper route, at the same time he was taking his full load of studies and other responsbilities in Caney High School. He and his younger brother, Jack, were real pals and were seen together often.
