BIGGS, ALMINA HINER (MRS. W. B.)
Mrs. W. B. Biggs, one of Butler County's best loved pioneer women, died at 2 p.m. January 24, 1954 at Topeka, Kansas, where her daughter resides. She was 90 years old in December and had been ill some time following a stroke.
Almina Hiner was born December 10, 1863 at Boynton, Illinois the daughter of Aaron and Mary Hiner. She married William Byron Biggs at Minor, Illinois, February 12, 1882 and they ahd five children. Her husband and one son, Lloyd, preceded her in death.
She is survived by three sons, Jesse, Walter and Lyle of Potwin, Kansas and a daughter, Mrs. Walter Huxman of Topeka, Kansas, nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
She was a charter member of the Potwin Christian Church.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 26, 1954 at the Potwin Christian Church with Rev. Clinton M. Thomas as clergyman. Interment was made in the McGill Cemetery at Potwin. (The Western Butler County Times, Thursday, January 28, 1954, page 1)
Funeral services for Louis Calvin Bryant, 55, Route 1, Benton, who died Wednesday, January 13, 1954 at a Kansas City hospital, was held Monday, January 18, at 1:00 p.m. at the Palmyra Baptist Church with Rev. Chester Stork officiating. Burial was made in the Green Valley Cemetery near Furley. The Kirby Funeral Home in El Dorado was in charge.
He was born in Bates County, Missouri, October 24, 1898, and married to Pauline Stewart at Urich, Missouri, July 4, 1941. He came to Benton three years ago from Adrian, Missouri. He was a member of the Church of God.
Surviving are his wife, five daughters, Mrs. Wanda Faye Snow, Holden, Missouri; Misses Ruby Jeanette, Margaret Ann; Janice Jean and Carolyn Kay Bryant, at the home; three sons, Joseph McCalvin Bryant, U. S. Army, Temple, Me., James Leo Bryant, Warrensburg, Missouri, Louis Lee Bryant of the home, two sisters, Mrs. Cecilia Compton, Adrian, Mrs. Bertha Tschudi, Garden City, Missouri, and one grandchild. Mrs. Mertie Bally Carley, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. G. M. Grayson at Yazoo City, Miss., on January 15, 1954. Her husband, P. S. Carley, preceded her in death November 3, 1952, as did three daughters. Two died in infancy and her oldest daughter died several years ago leaving four small children who were welcomed into the home of the grandparents.
Also surviving are two daughters and six sons, Mrs. Grayson and Mrs. Arthur O'Briant of Yazoo City, C. K. Carley of Enid, Oklahoma, and Paul, John, Aaron, Elmer and Joseph of Yazoo City. Her brothers are: John Bally of Andover, Ray Bally of Mt. Grove, Mo., and two sisters, Mrs. Harry Casper, of Wichita, Kans., and Mrs. J. E. Waggoner of Andover, Kans.; 22 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. (The Western Butler County Times, Thursday, February 11, 1954, page 1)
Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Bertschinger of rural Benton attended the graveside funeral services at El Dorado for the infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Cameron, last Saturday morning, January 2, 1954. The little boy was born in the Allen Memorial Hospital at El Dorado, Dec. 28, 1953 and died Dec. 30, 1953.
He is survived by a sister, Jane, his parents, and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Cameron, Lloyd Cameron is the nephew of Mrs. Bertschinger. (The Western Butler County Times, Thursday, January 7, 1954, page 1)
Mrs. John H. Davidson, age 62, 225 West Olive, a resident of El Dorado and Oil Hill since 1971, died at El Dorado last Tuesday night after a two-week illness. She was a sister of J. A. Bigelow of Towanda.
She was born in Putnam County, Ohio, November 22, 1881, and married John H. Davidson at Robinson, Illinois, June 6, 1913. He preceded her in death in June 1950.
She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Clarence Horton, 313 South Emporia, El Dorado; Mrs. William Mumford, Towanda; two sons, John H. Jr., Oklahoma City, Dean A. Shidler, Oklahoma; one sister, Mrs. W. F. Speaker, Portland, Oregon, one brother, J. A. Bigelow, and five grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. at the Kirby Funeral Home in El Dorado by Rev. Milo J. Paulin. Burial will be in the Towanda Cemetery. (The Western Butler County Times, Thursday, January 7, 1954, page 1)
Funeral services for Chester W. Garlick were held at Downings Mortuary in Wichita on Tuesday afternoon with Rev. N. Robert Gill officiating.
Chester W. Garlick was born on a farm near Benton on May 13, 1885 and passed away quite unexpectedly Saturday morning, January 16, 1953, at his home at 1405 West 35th Street in Wichita. He was the son of Oscar and Amelia Garlick, pioneers of the Benton Community, and spent all of his life in the Benton and Wichita vicinity.
He was married to Elizabeth Wallace, who survives. A brother, Floyd Garlick of Wichita, also survives and several nieces and nephews. (The Western Butler County Times, Thursday, January 21, 1954 page 4)
Lona May Goldsby, was born May 16, 1863, near Springfield, Illinois, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Goldsby. Here, with two brothers and a sister, she grew to womanhood. After the father's death, the mother, the brother, Denny, and the two daughters, Ida and Lona May came to Butler County, Kansas in 1880, locating northwest of Augusta.
On November 19, 1885, Lona May married George W. Nelson and they made their home no the east half of the Nelson homestead until in the 1920's the Santa Fe Railroad took over several farms and developed the Santa Fe Lake. The Nelsons joined the Central Baptist Church.
The sister, Ida, married A. H. McCormick and lived on an adjoining farm until they retired moved to Augusta.
Six children were born to this Nelson family: Stelle Nelson Krack, Earle James Nelson, Winifred Nelson Rawlings, all three now deceased, Lee George Nelson, Joseph Gedney Nelson and Relton Isaac Nelson.
On November 19, 1935, Mr. and Mrs. Nelson observed their 50th wedding anniversary with Open House. A few days later they went to their son, Lee's in Redondo Beach, California. Since that time, Mrs. Nelson has made her home with her other children in Wichita. She died there March 7, 1954 at the age of 90 years.
Funeral services were conducted at the Dusford Funeral Home in Augusta, at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 10, 1954. Rev. Robert Spindler of The Central Baptist Church officiated. She was buried beside her husband in the Nelson family lot in Indianola Cemetery. (The Western Butler County News, Thursday, March 18, 1954, page 1)
Mrs. Emma Grennan, aged 90 years, mother of Alfred Grennan of Benton, died at her home at Burlington, Kansas on Monday morning, Dec. 28, 1953. Funeral and burial on Thursday morning.
Her husband died five years ago. Attending the services were Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Grennan, their son Jimmie and their oldest son, Fred of Wichita. (The Western Butler County Times, Thursday, January 7, 1954, page 1)
The Benton community was saddened by the news of the death of Austie Henrie, wife of Orville Henrie. Mrs. Henrie passed away Friday evening, February 5,1 954 in a Topeka Hospital, Monday morning, then the body was brought to Douglass, Kansas, where services were conducted Monday afternoon from the Christian church, with burial in the Douglass Cemetery.

Sarah Lana Hawk was born at Keokuk, Iowa, May 29, 1862, and died February 21, 1954, at the age of 91 years, 8 months and 21 days. She was the oldest of ten children of whom four survive. Two brothers, Dennis Hawk of Fingley, Iowa and Delbert Hawk of Des Moines, Iowa; two sisters, Ida persons, Long Mont, Colorado and Dora Tidrick of Monrovia, California.
On February 28, 1886, she married Theadore P. Hobson
and to this union six children were born. Carl A. Hobson of Wichita, Kansas, Veva W. Haile of El Dorado, Kansas,
Dottie Nora, who died in infancy, Bessie J. Sparks, of Towanda, Kansas; Otta U. Hobson of El Dorado and Everett
G. Hobson of Jasper, Missouri.
She leaves five children, 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Her husband preceded her in death on September

Sympathy of the community is extended to Mrs. Bessie Sparks of Benton in the loss of her mother, Mrs. Hobson of Golden City, Missouri. Mrs. Hobson died Sunday morning, February 21, 1954, after a long illness. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Methodist Church at Jasper, Missouri. Charles Alfred Manor, was born June 4, 1871 at Delphia, Indiana, the son of John and Teressa Manor. He came to Kansas with his parents in 1876 and settled in Fairview township.
He was married to Etta May Bennett, May 21, 1895 at Winfield, Kansas. To this union five children were born, four of whom are survive. They are: Elsie E. Longstreth of Towanda, Kansas, Lora R. Smith of Fresno, California; Lyle A. Manor of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Eunice M. McKinney of Yates center, Kansas. One son, Harold J., preceded him in death.
He resided in Fairview township most of his life, moving to Yates Center, Kansas in 1947, where he lived until his death. He was a member of the Fairview Baptist Church.
He died January 19, 1954, at Neosho Memorial Hospital at Chanute, Kansas, at the age of 82 years, 7 months and 15 days. Besides his wife and children, he is survived by a sister, Edith Wooldridge of Potwin Kansas; 15 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Fairview Baptist Church, with Rev. Seymour Bruce officiating. (The Western Butler County Times, Thursday, January 28, 1954, Page 1)
Funeral services were held Sunday in Tonkawa, Oklahoma for Mrs. Newt McWilliams. She was the aunt of Clea McWilliams of Towanda, Mrs. Oral Blue of rural Benton and Mrs. Sue Brandon of Douglass. (The Western Butler County Times, Thursday, January 28, 1954, page 1)
Mr. and Mrs. Otis Nace of Pampa, Texas, were called to Minneapolis, Kansas last weekend because of the death of Mrs. Nace's father, Rev. Will Pierce. Rev. Pierce was a retired Methodsit minister. (The Western Butler County News, Thursday April 8, 1954, page 1)
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Watkins were in Burlingame, Kansas, Saturday to attend the funeral services of Mrs. Charles Scott. Mrs. Scott was the mother of Frank Scott, son-in-law of the Watkin's. (The Western Butler County Times, Thursday, February 4, 1954, page 1)
SHAUP, ALMA BRADLEY (MRS. HENRY T.)
Mrs. Henry To. Shaup, sister-in-law, of Mrs. Ralph Grier of Andover, died in Birmingham, Alabama, Sunday, March 14, 1954. She had been ill for a number of years.
She was the former, Miss Alma Bradley of Wichita and taught school in this locality.
She leaves her husband, one son, Wendell, and a grandson, Henry of Arlington, Virginia. One sister, Mrs. Edna Porter of Wichita, also survive.
She was buried in a cemetery in Birmingham, Alabama. (The Western Butler County News, Thursday, March 25, 1954, page 1)
Bennie Alanzo Whitmore, 78, died at his home in Towanda early Sunday morning.
A retired carpenter, he was born in Claring, Penn., June 4, 1875, moving to El Dorado in 1929. He lived in Oil Hill for a while and in 1947 moved to Towanda.
He is survived by his wife, and two sons, H. B. Whitmore, Wichita and c. C. Whitmore, Wilcox, Arizona, four grandchildren, two nephews and two nieces. (The Western Butler County Times, Thursday, April 15, 1954, page 1)
Elmer story Wimberly, 62, Route 4, El Dorado, died late Friday afternoon, March 5, 1954, at his home following a long illness.
He was born February 13, 1892 at Bolivar, Missouri and was married on July 1, 1914 to Grace pearl Stratton at buffalo, Missouri, she survives. Coming from Missouri 20 years ago, he lived in the Towanda community for 12 years and for the past eight years had been a resident of the Chelsea Community.
Other survivors are: two daughters, Mrs. Iris Booth, Kansas City, Missouri and Mrs. Laura Jean Weber, Potwin, four sons, James, 912 South High, El Dorado, Norman, Daton, Texas, Lemoyne, 1423 Sheldon, El Dorado and Melvin, 1229 West Towanda, El Dorado; two sisters, Mrs. Irene Stafford, Buffalo, Missouri, and Mrs. Jeanette Mizer, 212 West Ash, El Dorado; three brothers, Morris, Buffalo, Missouri, Oliver and Harry, both of Route 2, El Dorado and 12 grandchildren.
Another brother preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held at the Towanda Methodist Church Sunday at 3 p.m. with Rev. Milo J. Paulin of Wichita officiating, assisted by Rev. Charles Caulkins. Burial was in Towanda Cemetery. Word has been received here of the death of Ed Young, who lived in Wyoming, and had formerly lived here. Mrs. Howard Pyle of Wichita is a daughter of Mr. Young and she is a sister-in-law of Albert Pyle and Mrs. Hazel Hull of Towanda.
The body is being brought back here where graveside
