ADKINS, VICTOR CARL "VIC"

Victor Carl "Vic" Adkins, 43, of Newkirk, Okla., formerly of Douglass, farmer and trucker, died Thursday, July 23, 1992, as the result of injuries received in an automobile accident. Services were held Monday morning at Miller-Stahl Funeral Chapel in Newkirk.

Survivors include: wife, Denise, son, Troy of Douglass, daughters Tina Sawyer of Towanda, Kendra of Douglass, stepdaughter Stacey Glowacki of Ponca City, Okla.; mother and stepfather, Dolores and Roy Ewing of Atlanta, brother, Ben Jr. of Wichita, sisters, Deb of Wichita, Diana Caven of Rose Hill grandparents, Vic and Grace Caster of Douglass, three grandchildren.

BALOUN, DEBORAH MAE

Deborah Mae was born April 14, 1955, to John and Belle Jeffries and has lived all her life in Douglass, Kansas. She attended Douglass Public Schools, where she was to have been a Junior this school term.

She died suddenly August 26, 1971 at the Winfield Memorial Hospital, Winfield, Kansas, at the age of 16 years, 4 months and 12 days.

She was a member of the Christian Church here in Douglass.

She will be missed by her parents, Howard and Belle Baloun and her sister, Lasandra Rae, of the home.

Her father, John Jeffries, of Everett, Washington, another sister, Mrs. John Herren of Omaha, Nebraska, and her brother, James D. Jeffries, of Houston, Texas, along with a host of relatives and friends.

"We shall meet, but we shall miss her. There will be one vacant chair. We shall linger to carress her when we breather our evening prayer.

"When a week ago we gathered-joy was in her young bright eyes. But a golden cord has been severed and our plans in ruin lies.

"True-they tell us-Wreaths of glory ever more will deck her brow.

"But this only soothes the anguish sweeping over our heart strings now.

"Sleep today Oh, loved one - In your green and narrow bed.

"Petals from the pines and roses mingle with the tears we shed."

Funeral services were held Sunday, August 28, at 3 p.m. at the First Christian Church of Douglass.

Vocalist, Roy Britton, sang, "How Great Thou Art," and "Beyond the Sunset." Mrs. J. C. Seal accompanied on the organ.

Casket bearers were Mike Price, James Kittle, Patrick Ferguson, Ron Garcia, Mike Hufferd, and Raymond Johnson.

BARNES, GEORGE F.

George F. Barnes, 70, of Atlanta, died Monday, February 21, 1972 in the Newton Memorial Hospital in Winfield.

He was born October 28, 1901 in Butler County to William Owen and Jennie Barnes. He married Lucile McEnew, April 18, 1935 in Medford, Oklahoma. He was a farmer and stockman. He was a member of the Christian Church of Douglass, the Burden Masonic Lodge, the Order of Eastern star and Elks Lodge in Winfield.
He is survived by his wife; two sons, Gary Barnes of Wichita, Steven Barnes of Salina, one daughter, Mrs. Nancy Chenoweth of Birmingham, Alabama; two brothers, Raymond Barnes of Wichita, Wilbur Barnes of Latham; two sisters, Mrs. Ed Fox of Cambridge, Mrs. Herschel Foley of Oak Grove, Missouri; and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m., Wednesday in the Miles Mortuary Chapel in Burden by Rev. William Thorn, pastor of the Metropolitan Baptist Church in Wichita, Don Bailey, soloist, was accompanied by Mrs. Maureen Moore.

Pallbearers were Leland Osborn, Eugene Womacks, Larry Womacks, Mike Crowley, Walter Smith and Ralph Chenoweth. Burial was in the Douglass Cemetery.

BEAL, EVA WAKEFIELD

Eva Wakefield Beal, 78, died Saturday, May 20, 1972, after a long illness.

Mrs. Beal was born September 7, 1893, the daughter of James W. and Jennie Bordon Woods in Emerson, Nebraska. She came to Douglass, Kansas community with her parents in 1908 and finished her schooling in Douglass.

She was married to Cecil Wakefield on May 15, 1912 in El Dorado, Kansas. Mr. Wakefield was killed in 1926. She continued to live in Douglass and raise her three children.

On February 5, 1944, she was married to Claude Beal and they made their home in Clearwater where Mr. Beal had lived for many years. Mr. Beal preceeded her in death in 1954.

Mrs. Beal was a member of the United Methodist Church of Clearwater, The Presbyterian Friendship Club, Eastern Star Woodbine Chapter #95 of Douglass, Kansas, The Clearwater Republican Club, and the Wild Rose Club.

Funeral services for Mrs. Beal were held Wednesday May 24, 1972 at 10 a.m. at the Webb Mortuary Chapel, Clearwater, Kansas. The Rev. Duane L. Dyer was the officiating clergyman.

Mrs. James Hanley was organist for the services and accompanied Mr F. John McMillen who sang "His Eye Is on the Sparrow," and "the Old Rugged Cross."

Casketbearers were Bill Watt, Allen Webb, Edgar Anderson, Laureano Prieto, Lew Shafer and Jack Barker.

Interment was in the Douglass Kansas Cemetery.

Mrs. Beal is survived by one son, Walter W. Wakefield, Denver, Colorado; two daughters, Mrs. Mildred Lee, Palatine, Illinois and Mrs. Cecile McLaughlin; and one stepson, Harry Clyde Beal; nine grandchildren, Mrs. Judy Woods, Clearwater, Mr. Steve McLaughlin, Anthony, Kansas; Gray Michael Wilson, Denton, Texas; Georgia, Hertha, Walter, John, Gray and Jamie Wakefield all of Denver, Colorado and five great-grandchildren. BRAUNGARDT, PAULA DEANN

Graveside services were conducted by Rev. Coin Rees for Paula Deann Braungardt at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 24, 1971, at the Douglass Cemetery.

The daughter of Kirk and Linda Braungardt, Rock, Kansas, was born August 20, 1971, at 10:37 p.m. at the Newton Memorial Hospital, Winfield, Kansas. She passed away, August 23 at 1:05 a.m.

Besides her parents, she was survived by her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Braungardt, Rock, Kansas and Mr. Leonard Copple, Hewins, Kansas.

CLIFFORD, SARAH

Funeral services will be held at the Hilyard Funeral Home at Douglass at 2 o'clock Wednesday, afternoon for Mrs. Sarah Shanks Clifford, 86, who died Sunday. Interment will be in the Douglass Cemetery.

Mrs. Clifford died in an El Dorado nursing home where she had been a resident for the past seven years.

Mrs. Clifford had lived at Douglass all her life prior to moving to El Dorado. She was the former owner of Sarah's Recreation Hall at Douglass.

Survivors include her nephew, John Kenney of El Dorado. (El Dorado Times, January 4, 1972)

CONDE, JASON EVAN

Graveside services were held Wed. afternoon at the Douglass Cemetery for Jason Evan Conde, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Conde, Jr., who was stillborn Monday.

Survivors in addition to the parents, include a brother, Robert James and a sister, Janis Elaine, both of the home, and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert McBee of Lamar, Mo., and Mr. and Mrs. James Conde, Sr. of Manhattan. (Douglass Tribune, Thursday, January 16, 1975)

DAVIS, NANCY

Funeral services will be held at the Douglass United Methodist church Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock for nancy "Nannie" Davis, 90, who died Wednesday at the Colonial Manor at Douglass. The Rev. B. E. Faulkner will conduct the services. Interment will be in the Douglass cemetery.

Nancy Davis was born Nov. 24, 1881 at Birds, Ill., the daughter of Charles and Arvilla Plummer. She was married to Charles Franklin Davis in 1898 at Springfield, Ill. They came to Kansas in 1916 and she was a resident of the Rock and Douglass communities the remainder of her life. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1939.

Mrs. Davis was a member of the woodbine Chapter of the Eastern Star of Douglass.

Survivors include five sons, Rudy of Rock, Gilbert of Winfield, Grant of Wichita, Donald of Augusta and Howard of Douglass; two daughters, Mrs. Fern Miller of Ellinwood and Mrs. Ruby Lusk of Sun city, Calf., 16 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services are pending for Mrs. Nancy Davis of Douglass who died Wednesday morning at the Colonial Manor at Douglass.

DORNBOS, EVA ECKEL

Mrs. Eva Eckel Dornbos, who died in Ponca City, Oklahoma, was buried in the Douglass Cemetery yesterday.

She was 93 years of age and was the last member of her immediate family.

Mrs. Dornbos formerly lived in the Douglass area and was an aunt to Mrs. Julia Taylor and Ima Wallace.

She leaves behind three children, Mrs. Frances Beiber, Ponca City, Oklahoma, Philip, Wyoming and Charles Dornbos of Bartlesville, Oklahoma. (El Dorado Times, July 22, 1971)

DOWELL, ERNEST G.

Ernest G. Dowell, 79 of Douglass, retired oil field pumper, died Tuesday. He is survived by his widow, Opal, a son, Robert Dowell, Wichita, four daughters, Mrs. Delores Long, Altamont, Mrs. Etta hawkesworth, El Cerrito, Calif., Mrs. Alice Hoskinson, Seattle, Wash., and Mrs. Olive Miller, Wichita and two sisters, Mrs. Essie Ball, Cherokee, Okla., and Mrs. Grace Gitschlog, Yelm, Wash. Funeral services will be held at the Hilyard Funeral Home at Douglass at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon for Earnest G. Dowell, 79, of Douglass. Interment will be in the Douglass Cemetery.

Earnest G. Dowell was born Jan. 13, 1895 in Oklahoma and was married to Opal Patterson Oct. 29, 1922.

Survivors include his widow, a son, Robert Dowell of Wichita, four daughters, Mrs. Delores Long of Altamont, Mrs. Etta Hawkesworth of El Cerrito, Calif., Mrs. Alice Hoskinson of Washington and Mrs. Olive Miller of Wichita, two sisters, Mrs. Essie Ball of Cherokee, Oklahoma and Mrs. Grace Gitschlag of Yelma, Washington, 12 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. DUNN, JOYCLE CLARIECE

Funeral services for Joyce Clariece Dunn of Kansas City, Missouri was held in Hilyard Smith Funeral Home at 2:00 p.m. January 11, 1975.

Officiating was Rev. Darrel Hoffmaster with Mrs. J. C. Seal as organist.

Survivors include her mother and step father, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Foley, Oak Grove, Missouri, two sons, Thomas Dunn, Kansas City, Mo., and Robert Dunn of Olathe, Kansas and one sister, Rogene Morgan of Wichita.

Casket bearers were Gary Barnes, Ernest Price Jr., Bob Price, Bill Mitchell, Bybee Baird and Phi Chenoweth.

FITZGERALD, WILLIAM DEAN

Funeral services will be held at 11 o'clock Saturday morning at the Hilyard Funeral Home at Douglass for William Dean Fitzgerald, 50, who died Wednesday at Shreveport, La. Interment will be in the Douglass cemetery.

William Dean Fitzgerald was born at Douglass and was a retired army veteran. He was a prisoner of war in Germany during World War II.
There are no immediate survivors. (El Dorado Times, February 12, 1971)

William Dean Fitzgerald was born at Douglass, Kansas on November 21, 1921, to John and Mae Fitzgerald. He grew to manhood in Douglass and entered the armed services on August 23, 1940. During World War II he was captured and held prisoner in Germany. Upon his release he continued in the armed services until his discharge, as an Airman First Class in the U. S. A. on January 31, 1961.

He died at the Veterans Hospital in Shreveport, Louisiana, on Wednesday, February 10, 1971.

Funeral services were held at Hilyard Funeral Home Saturday, February 13, 1971 at 11:00 a.m. Reverend Wayne D. Findley officiating. Mrs. C. A. Ogg played as organ solos, "In the Garden," and "Old Rugged Cross."

Bearers were Francis Elder, Jack Barker, Lloyd Scott, Jr., Jack Engle, William Scott and Dale Watts.

Burial was in the Douglass Cemetery, Hilyard Funeral Home in charge. (El Dorado Times, February 18, 1971)

FORD, OPAL I.

Opal I. Ford, age 60, passed away January 4, 1975. She was born June 25, 1914 in Furley, Ks., the daughter of Chet and Lena Balentine Rhoades.

She owned and operated the Ford Grocery store for many years. Prior to that time she owned, operated or at one time worked for nearly every café in Douglass . She moved to Douglass in 1947 from Newton.

Survivors include 2 sons Jim of Douglass, and Gale of Wichita, 1 daughter Mrs. Donna Mitchell of Douglass, 1 brother, Harold Rhoades, of Wichita, and five sisters, Mrs. Mabel Nordstedt, Eris, Ks., Mrs. Pauline McKibban, st. Louis, Mrs. Louise Slenker, of Valley Center, Mrs. Nellie Davis of Wewoka, Oklahoma and Mrs. Betty Whittington of Wichita, 10 grandchildren and 8 step-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday, January 6 at 1:00 p.m. in the Douglass First United Methodist Church. Rev. B. E. Faulkner officiating. Interment was in the Douglass Cemetery. Mrs. J. c. Seal played the piano and Miss Debbie Cooley sang "Beyond the Sunset," and "The Old Rugged Cross."

Casket bearers included Hoy Levering, Bill Polk, Bob Weaver, Dick Davis, Sam Wright and Earl Valentine.

GIBSON, MAUD MYRL

Maude Myrl Gibson was born April 4,1 881, near Douglass, Kansas, to George and Susan Littell. At the age of five her mother died and she moved into the home of her aunt Sarah Seal. She grew to womanhood in the Douglass community and continued to live in this community after marrying Samuel A. Gibson on Christmas Eve, 1903.

On a farm near Douglass, they raised their family of 3 sons and a daughter. She died at the age of 90 on April 28, 1971. She and Sam had had 67 years of married life. She was an active member of the United Methodist Church and the Women's Society of Christian Service.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Clarence and one sister, Louetna.S he is survived by her husband, Sam, three sons, Ward of Douglass, Clarence of Salina, and Raymond of Wassanaar, Holland; one daughter, Mrs. Marjorie Diekman of Douglass; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

This loving and dedicated wife, mother and grandmother will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Funeral services were held Friday, April 30, 1971 at 10:30 a.m. at Douglass United Methodist Church. Rev. Wayne D. Findley officiating.

Mrs. C. A. Ogg played as organ solos "In the Garden" and "When the Roll is Called Up Yonder." Bearers were Gary Gibson, Clifford Little, Jack Cutton, Stephen Gibson, Denny Williams and c. S. Seal. Interment was in Douglass Cemetery.

GIMPLE, EARL G.

Funeral services will be held at the Hilyard Funeral Home at Douglass Sunday afternoon at 2:30 for Earl G. Gimple, 87, of Douglass, who died at the Winfield hospital Wednesday.

Earl G. Gimple was born at Mankato and moved to Douglass in 1932. He was a retired farmer.

Survivors include his widow, Bertha, three sons, Herman Gimple of Phoenix and Gene Gimple and Eldon Gimple both of Douglass; a daughter, Mrs. Dale Hall of Wellington and a sister, Mrs. Emma Hutson of Colorado Springs, Colo. (El Dorado times June 25, 1971)

Earl G. Gimple, age 87 years, son of James and Mary Gimple was born at Mankato, Kansas, January 7, 1884, and died in Newton Memorial Hospital, Winfield, Kansas on June 23, 1971 at 9:00 p.m.

He married Miss Bertha Plage on September 21, 1910 at Burr Oak, Kansas and worked as a practicing Chiropractor in Liberal, Kansas from 1919 until they moved to the Douglass community in 1932.

They resided on a farm on Route 1, Douglass.

He was a conservationist, an avid sportsman and enjoyed helping others. He was known for his kindness towards others. He was a member of the Douglass United Methodist Church.

Survivors include the widow, three sons, Herman, Phoenix, Arizona, Gene and Eldon of Douglass, Kansas; one daughter, Mrs. Dale (Lou Ann) Hall, Wellington, Kansas; one sister, Mrs. Emma Hutson, Colorado Springs, Colorado; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the Hilyard Funeral Home Chapel at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, June 27, 1971. Rev. B. E. Faulkner of the Douglass United Methodist Church. He was assisted by Rev. Mrs. Ruth Eckel.

Mrs. C. A. Ogg, Organist, presented as solos, "What A Friend," and "In the Sweet, Bye and Bye."

Bearers were Marion Kunkel, Raymond Knoll, Eugene Russell, Billie Haskin, Gerald Shaver, and Robert J. Little.

Interment was in the Douglass Cemetery.

GILMER, KENT PRICE

Funeral services will be held at the Douglass United Methodist Church at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon for Kent Price Gilmer, 77, of Douglass, who died Wednesday. Interment will be in the Douglass Cemetery.

Kent Price Gilmer was born Dec. 3, 1894, at Lebanon, Va., the son of Marcell and Sally Gilmer. He moved to Douglass with his parents when he was seven. He was married to Muriel Siroky on June 28, 1939.

He was a veteran of World War II and affiliated with the United Methodist Church. He was a farmer and stockman.

Survivors include his widow, Muriel; three daughters, Mrs. Sharon Gibson and Mrs. Christine O'Neil of Douglass and Mrs. Janice Eagan of Topeka; two stepsons, Noble Siroky of Wichita and Wesley Siroky of Tulsa, Okla.; a brother, Jim Gilmer of Udall and three sisters, Miss Lena Gilmer of Douglass, Mrs. Eula Beightol of Atlanta and Mrs. Virginia Hayter of Abington, Va. GOATLEY, PEARL (MRS. EDGAR)

Mrs. Goatley Rites Thursday

Funeral services will be held at the Hilyard Funeral Home at Douglass at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon for Mrs. Edgar (Pearl) Goatley, 95, who died Tuesday at Colonial Manor at Douglass. The Rev. B. E. Faulkner will conduct the services. Interment will be in the Douglass cemetery.

Mrs. Goatley was born at Ottawa on Oct. 20, 1876, the daughter of Samuel and Rose Heavlin. She was married to Edgar Goatley in 1906. They went to Douglass in 1922 and she had been a resident of that city until her death. She was preceded in death by her husband on Dec. 5, 1954.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Neoma Murphy of Wichita, and Mrs. Gwen Long of Douglass; a grandson and two great-grandsons. (El Dorado Times, March 15, 1972)

GROOM, ELMER PERRY

Elmer Groom Rites Saturday

Funeral services will be held at the Rock United Methodist Church at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon for Elmer Perry Groom, 88, who died Wednesday. Interment will be in the Douglass Cemetery.

Survivors include his widow, Carrie; three daughters, Mrs. Lela Monath and Mrs. Winifred Bannon, both of Rock and Mrs. Hazel Felker of Wichita, and a brother, The Rev. J. Paul Groom of Winfield. (The El Dorado Times, March 3, 1972)

GUYOT, ARNOLD R.

Arnold R. Guyot, age 85, wided at William Newton Memorial Hospital Sunday, April 25, He was the son of Charles and Nancy Guyot. He was born in Douglass, September 26, 1885 and was a lifelong resident of the community.

On February 16, 1909, he was married to Inez Allen who preceded him in death June 26, 1961. A son, Bill, also preceded him in death in 1966. Guyot was a retired farmer.

Survivors are a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Elva Allen, Douglass, one sister, Mrs. Golda O'Connell, Long Beach, California; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services were held April 27, at 10:30 a.m. at the Hilyard Funeral Home in Douglass, with Rev. Coin W. Rees of Douglass officiating.

HEIN, CHARLES

Funeral services for Charles Hein of Douglass will be conducted at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon in the Douglass United Methodist Church. Mr. Hein died Tuesday morning at his home in Douglass at the age of 83.

The Rev. B. E. Faulkner will officiate. Interment will be at the Douglass Cemetery with Hilyard Funeral Home in charge.

Hein was born Jan. 17, 1889 in Flensburg, Germany, the son of Carl and Catherine Hein. He came to the Douglass community as a small child and has made his home there since.

He was married Dec. 25, 1911 in Douglass to Katie Knollenberg, who survives. His only daughter, Frances, preceded him in death Jan. 7, 1942.

Mr. Hein was a member of Masonic AF and AM No. 151 of Douglas.

Also surviving are two brothers, Frank of Douglass and Oscar of Fall River; two sisters, Mrs. Louise Diller of Mulvane and Mrs. Mary Satterfield of Douglass and a son-in-law, Dale Whitt of Wichita. (El Dorado Times, April 19, 1972)

HOUSE, ALBERTA

Funeral services for Miss Alberta House, 88, Douglass, were held today at the Douglass United Methodist church. She died Saturday at Newton Memorial hospital in Winfield.

The Rev. B. E. Faulkner officiated.

Born in Douglass December 7, 1883, she had lived in Douglass for her entire life.

She was a member of the PEO Sisterhood.

Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Clara Cottman, Ponca City, Okla., and Mrs. Leota Godding, Lawrence.

Interment was at the Douglass Cemetery.

H. Fae House Rites are Held

Graveside funeral services were held at the Douglass Cemetery Monday morning for H. Fae House, 72, of Douglass, who died last Friday.

He was born at Elsmore and went to Douglass from Wichita in 1954. He was a retired Coleman Co. employee.

HOWARD, RUTH

Douglass Woman Services Tuesday

Services for Mrs. Ruth Howard, 86, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Douglass Christian Church. She died Saturday.

She was a lifelong resident of Douglass. Her husband, W. F., died in 1947.

She was a past officer and 50 year member of Eastern Star.

Survivors include two sons, Carson, Chagrin Falls, Ohio, and James W. Wichita.

A memorial has been established with the church.

HOUSER, ALLE MRS

Mrs. Alle Houser, 81, long time Rock resident, died Sunday at Concordia.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Douglas Christian church and burial will be in the Douglass Cemetery.

Mrs. Houser was born Nov. 27, 1890, at Springfield, Ohio. She moved to Kansas with her parents in 1901 and lived in Rock most of her life.

She married Cuthbert Houser Dec. 23, 1909. He preceded her in death.

Mrs. Howard Rites Tuesday

Funeral services for Mrs. Ruth Howard, 86, of Douglass will be conducted at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon in the Douglass Christian Church. She died Saturday.

She was a lifelong resident of Douglass. Her husband W. F. Howard died in 1947.

She was a part officer and 50 year member of PEO sisterhood and a 50 year member of the Order of Eastern Star. She was also a member of the D. A. R. in Augusta.

Her father, the late W. M. Satterthwaite, was editor of the Douglass Tribune for many years.

Survivors include two sons, Carson of Chagrin Falls, Ohio and James W. of Wichita.

LAWTON, JANICE LYNN

Funeral services were held this morning in Wichita for Mrs. Robert (Janice Lynn) Lawton, 30, of Sioux Falls, S.D., formerly of Wichita, who died Wednesday after an illness.

She was the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bush and Mr. and Mrs. Olave Piper, all of Douglass.

Surviving also are her widower, Robert Lawson, a son and a daughter, Richard and Jean, all of the home, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Galbreath, Wichita, and two sisters, Mrs. Suzanne Kovak, West Los Angeles, Calif., and Miss Lisa C. Galbraith, Austin, Texas. (El Dorado Times, January 4, 1975)

MARKEL, CHARLES A.

Charles A. Markel, age 81, the youngest of ten children born to Michael and Alvinceadore Emlett Markel on June 23, 1890 at Bolivar, Missouri, died in the Veterans Hospital, Wichita, Kansas on July 9, 1971.

His parents came to Volivar, Missouri, from Hanover, Pennsylvania in 1866. He was preceded in deaeth by his parents, eight sisters, and one brother.

Charles parents moved the family to the Belle Plaine locality in 1901. Charles worked with his father as a stone-cutter for some time and then decided to take up farming. He served his country in World War I. After returning home, he became a charter member of the Belle Plaine American Legion Post, and after the family moved to the farm northeast of Douglass, Kansas, he became a member of the Douglass Post.

He married Miss Elizabeth Walter at Newkirk, Oklahoma on March 16, 1927. They resided on a farm near Belle Plaine. To this union were born two sons and one daughter. The family moved to a farm northeast of Douglass in 1940 where he continued to farm until 1957.

Mr. Markel was an avid sportsman and had many friends. He accepted Christ as his savior on June 28th, last, while visiting with a member of the Gideons in his home.

He is survived by the widow of the home, two sons, Charles D., of Wichita, and Calvin K of the home; one daughter, Mrs. Mary Alice Markel Dill. Wichita. One grandson, Robert D. Burkett and one granddaughter, Miss Susan Kay Markel.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 12, 1971, at Hilyard Funeral Home. Rev. B. E. Faulkner officiated. Mrs. J. A. Perisho sang "In the Garden," and "Beyond the Sunset." She was accompanied on the organ by Mrs. C. A. Ogg.

Active bearers were Ralph Ames, Garland Bare, Jim Knowles, Ronnie Rierson, Raymond Essex and Earnest Eshelman. Honorary bearers were Jerry Moore, Sam Barner, Harold Hatfield, Loren Miles and Jesse McFarland.

McKINLEY, MAUDE

Maude McKinley was born April 20, 1880, at Rosalia, Kansas, to Charles and Sarah Piper, and died March 19, 1972, in Winfield, Kansas.

They came to Douglass in 1894 and spent the rest of her life here.

She was united in marriage to Harold McKinley on October 1, 1919, at Oklahoma City. They celebrated their 52 anniversary last October.

She is survived by her husband of the home, two sisters, Veneta Graves of Douglass, and Daisy Bruchen of Buffalo, Kansas, and a host of relatives and friends.

Rev. Coin W. Rees officiated at her funeral. Services at the Hilyard Funeral Home Tuesday, March 21, at 2:00 p.m.

Mrs. C. A. Ogg played as organ solos, "Old Rugged Cross" and "Beyond the Sunset."

Bearers were Royce Weird, Curtis Voigt, Frank Johnson, Bill Cooley, Harold Cooley and James Johnson.

Interment was in the Douglass Cemetery, Hilyard Funeral Home in charge. (Douglass Tribune, March 23, 1972)

McKINLEY, WARREN E.

Warren E. McKinley, 71, 117 Iowa, former Arkansas City resident, died at his home Sunday.

Born September 19, 1899 in Paris, Missouri, he was the son of James and Elizabeth Francis Murphy McKinley. He married Nellie Esther Mussetter on May 4, 1950 in Arkansas City. They resided in Arkansas City until seven years ago when they made their home in Winfield. During W. W. II he served in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at Mitchell Field in New York. He was a retired section laborer for the Santa Fe Railroad.

Survivors include his widow of the home and one brother, James Harold of Douglass. He was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Hilyard Funeral home of Douglass, with the Rev. James D. Shaw of Tulsa, Oklahoma, officiating. Burial was in the Douglass Cemetery. The Rindt Memorial Chapel of Arkansas City was in charge of the funeral arrangements. (El Dorado Times, April 22, 1971)

METHENY, EVERT L.

Evert L. Metheny, 62, of El Dorado, formerly of Douglass passed away January 2, 1975. He was born August 26, 1912 in Begelow, Kansas to Fred and Rose Miller Metheny.

He married Alta Halouska on January 2, 1934 in dodge City. He was a member of the Douglass First Christian church.

Before retiring he owned and operated a service station in El Dorado.

Survivors include his wife, Alta, 2 sons Jerry of Los Angeles, Dennis of El Droado, and 1 daughter Mrs. Kay Pterson of Wichita, his father Fred Metheny of Sedan, Ks. A brother Frank of Minneola and a sister Mrs. Fern Seaman of Cedar Vale.

Funeral services were held Sunday, January 5, 1975 at 2:00 p.m. in the Douglass First Christian Church. Rev. Darrell Hoffmaster officiating. Interment was in the Douglass Cemetery.

Mrs. J. C. Seal was the organist and Mrs. J. A. Perisho sang "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" and "Mansion Over the Hill Top."

Casket bearers were Roger Payton, Clifford Russell, Robert Banfill, Ray Brill, Jeff Wimberly and Fred Cook.

MITCHELL, GLADYS M.

Gladys M. Mitchell, 68, died December 30, 1974 in El Dorado. She was born Feb. 1, 1906 in Sterling, Okla., to Conrad and Mary Ragesdell Maness. She married John S. Mitchell June 19, 1921 in Ringling, Okla. He preceded her in death on Jan. 18, 1966.

She was a member of the Douglass Church of Christ. Mrs. Mitchell was employed by the Boeing Company for over 20 years.

Survivors include a son Elgie of Douglass, 2 sisters, Mrs. Fern Gibson, Douglass and Mrs. Mildred Glaves, 2 borthers, S. A. Manness, Odessa, Texas, and J. E. Maness of Newark, Del., 5 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 2, 1975 at 10:30 am in the Douglass Church of Christ. Bill Freeze officiating. Interment in the Douglass Cemetery.
Miss Donna Wilson sang "Amazing Grace," and "How Great Thou Art."

Casket bearers were Everett Bloom, J. L. Guyot, Hugh Gibson, Larry Cornelison, Jim McBee and Ike Condon.

RINARD, DELIAH

Funeral services were held at the Dunsford Funeral Home Chapel Monday afternoon for Deliah A. Rinard, 77, who died at Allen Memorial Hospital at El Dorado Saturday. The Rev. Vernon White conducted the services. Interment was in the Douglass Cemetery.

Deliah A. Rinard was born Oct. 24, 1893 near Latham, the daughter of James Thomas and Mary Etta (Sutton) Edwards. She was married to Donald O. Ninard in 1939. He preceded her in death by a son, two brothers, Guy and Cecil and a sister, Thelma Rogers.

She moved to this area from Sacramento, Calif., in 1955 and was affiliated with the First Christian church.

Survivors include a brother, Virgil Edwards of Augusta and two sisters, Pearl Young of Woodland, Calif., and Frances Seaburn of Augusta. (El Dorado Times, July 19, 1971)

ROWLAND, CLARA

Funeral services were held at the Hilyard Funeral Home at Douglass Wednesday afternoon for Mrs. Clara Rowland, 84, who died Sunday. Interment was in the Douglass cemetery.

Mrs. Rowland was born in Holland and went to the Douglass area in 1943. She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Rowland, Sr., in 1965.

Survivors include five sons, Louis Rowland of Rose Hill, Melvin Rowland, Jr., Will S. Rowland and Herbert Rowland all of Augusta and Robert Rowland of Flint, Mich.; and a daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Berger of Rock. (El Dorado Times, December 15, 1971)

SHAVER, BERTHA FAE

Bertha Fae Shaver was born November 15, 1909, at Derby, Kansas to Emmett and Frances Shields. A farm near Derby was her home until she married W. M. Shaver on November 24, 1929. The first six years of their married life, she and her husband farmed near Cedarvale, Kansas. In 1936, she moved with her family to the Douglass community. She lived there until her death on January 12, 1971.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Women's Society of Christian Service, the Order of the Eastern Star, Woodbine Chapter, Rolling Hills E. H. U. and the Country Club.

She is survived by her husband, one son, Gerald of Douglass, two daughters, Mrs. Don Branine of Winfield, Kansas and Mrs. Johnnie Howell of Augusta, Kansas, nine grandchildren, five brothers, Dale and Richard Shields of Wichita, William and Ivan of Derby and Raymond of Pheonix, Arizona and one sister, Mrs. Carl Saft of Arvada, Colorado.

She will be greatly missed by her family and her many friends.

Mrs. Robert Kittle and Mrs. W. C. Griffis sang "In the Garden" and "Old Rugged Cross" with Mrs. C. A. Ogg at the organ.

Bearers were David Whitney, George Stafford, M. D. McFaddin, Robert Little, Virgil Polk and Gene Gimple.

SHERAR, GLADYS WOODY

Gladys Woody Sherar was born on the Woody farm November 25, 1897, the second child and eldest daughter of Albert and Pearl Pulver Woody. She departed this life Sunday, May 21, 1972. Gladys graduated from Douglass Public Schools, and the Winfield Public Schools. She graduated with honors from Pittsburg State College.

On December 27, 1931, Gladys was married to Elmer E. Sherar of Paola, Kansas. He died in 1969.

Three daughters were born to the Sherars; Jeanne Sherar Valentine, Yvonne Sherar Hammons and Beverley Sherar Upshaw. There are ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Her surviving brothers and sisters are Orville woody, Douglass; Vivian Woody, Douglass, Alberta Gibson, Douglass, Ferol Marshall, Potwin, Kansas; and Milton Woody, Douglass.

At the time of her death Gladys Sherar was the Curator of the Douglass Historical Museum. Since 1949, when the museum collection was started, she, with others in Douglass, developed in the most outstanding relics collection in Butler County. She was also honored in recognition of her work in this field by being named in "Who's Who of American Women."

Major efforts Gladys Woody Sherar made during her adult life were three fold: teaching, service, welfare of her family and the preservation of valuable historical materials in Southern Butler County.

Funeral services were held at the Douglass Church of Christ Tuesday, May 23, 1972, at 2 o'clock p.m. Jay Rutledge officiating.

Congregational singing was led by Eddie Barber. The songs were "O' Happy Day" and "He Leadeth Me."

Bearers were Lawrence Alley, Marvin Sisk, Raymond MacKay, W. A. Graves, Robert Newman and James McBee. Interment was in Douglass cemetery. Hilyard Funeral home in charge. (Douglass Tribune, May 25, 1972)

SMITH, DENZIL R.

Services, Thursday for D. R. Smith

UDALL - Denzil R. Smith, 76, retired farmer, died Tuesday. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in United Methodist church. Burial will be at Douglass.

Among the survivors is a daughter, Mrs. Robert D. Weaver, Douglass.

Denzil Rusein Smith was born April 29, 1895, at Mulvane, Kansas, and passed away April 11, 1972, at Winfield, Kansas in the William Newton Memorial Hospital.
He was the son of Ellsworth O. and Emma Hilbert Smith.

His sisters are Mrs. Elva McQuitty, Mrs. Grace Norden and Mrs. Hazel Johnson all of Mulvane.

His brothers are Homer Smith of Belle Plaine and Lee R Smith who preceded him in death in 1918.

Denzil was unitedin marriage to Pauline C. Hartenbower on April 24, 1921. To this union were born three daughters: Mrs. William P. White of Colubmia, Maryland, Mrs. James R. Robinson of Wichita, Kansas and Mrs. Robert D. Weaver of Douglass, Kansas; and two sons, Lee of Wichita, Kansas and John of Erick, Oklahoma.

Eight granddaughters, nine grandsons, and seven great-grandchildren.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Udall, Kansas and for eight years was the lay delegate to the Kansas West Conference. He was a veteran of World War I.

Services will be held at 2 o'clock p.m. at the Udall United Methodist Church, Thursday, April 13, 1972.

Rev. Robert D. Simison will officiate. Interment will be in the Douglass cemetery. Hilyard Funeral Home in charge. (Douglass Tribune, April 13, 1972)

SPRAGUE, ELMER EUGENE

Elmer Eugene Sprague was born June 10, 1886, in Topeka, Kansas, and died June 18, 1971 at the Newton Memorial Hospital in Winfield.

He came to Douglass in 1909, and was united in marriage to Florence Effie Garrett in 1913.

To this union was born three children: two boys and one girl, Edward Sprague of Tulsa, Oklahoma; Johnie, who died in infancy; and Mary who died in infancy. His wife preceded him in death.

He leaves to mourn his death one son, Edward; one brother, Carmin Sprague of Douglass; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends.

He was a member of the Church of Christ.

STAFFORD, GLEN W.

Graveside Rites Friday at 2 for Glen Stafford

Graveside funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon at the Douglass cemetery for Glen W. Stafford, 64, who died Monday at the Winfield hospital.
Glen W. Stafford was born at Sedan and moved to Douglass in 1934.

Survivors include his widow, Louida; two sons, William Stafford of Kansas City, Kan., and Harold Stafford of Douglass, a daughter, Mrs. Linda Lemmons of Augusta; two brothers, G. d. Stafford of Seminole, Okla., and Ralph L. Stafford of Seattle, and two sisters, Mrs. Verlon Jensen of Chelan Falls, Wash., and Mrs. Nina Barnes of Dewey, Okla.

A memorial has been established with the building fund of the Douglass First United Methodist Church. (El Dorado Times, September 23, 1971)

STRAW, WALTER L.

The recent snow storm claimed the life of a Douglass man who suffered a heart attack Tuesday at his home while shoveling snow.

Funeral services for Walter L. straw, 55, will be conducted at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon in the Baptist Church of Douglass. Mr. Allen Jones will officiate. Interment will be in the Douglass Cemetery, with Hilyard Funeral Home in charge.

He was born April 20, 1915 in Preston, the son of Andrew and Eva Straw.

During World War II he served in Alaska. On April 14, 1944 he was married to Katharine Veley in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. She survives in the home.

Also surviving are three sons, James of Clarksville, Tenn., Spec./4 Wayne Stray stationed in Vietnam and Andrew of Wichita; two daughters, Mrs. Margaret Haas of Douglass and Miss Betty Straw of Littleton, Colo, and two grandchildren.

Also surviving are his mother, Mrs. Eva Straw of Pratt, a brother, Orville of Hope, Ark., and three sisers, Mrs. Mary Mitchell of Pawhuska, Okla., Mrs. Gail White of Big Cabin, Okla. And Mrs. Bonita Ballard of Alsea, Ore.

Mr. Straw was a member of the Baptist church and AF and AM 151 of Douglass; a past patron of Woodbine Chapter 95, OES; Wichita Consistory, Midian Shrine of Wichita, York Rite of Winfield and VFW of Derby. (El Dorado Times, February 25, 1971)

WARREN, ARTHUR J.

Arthur J. "Hill" Warren, age 69, died at New Port Richey, Florida, October 28, 1971, following a lengthy illness.

He was born November 3, 1901 to Bert and Agnes Sheldon Warren in Bowling Green, Ohio. He spent a great deal of his early life with his grandparents.

He worked for Sun Oil Company for 45 years before his retirement. He came to the Douglass community in 1922. He married Miss Alma Glaves in El Dorado, Kansas, on July 11, 192

WARREN, ARTHUR J.

Arthur J. "Hill" Warren, age 69, died at New Port Richey, Florida, October 28, 1971, following a lengthy illness.

He was born November 3, 1901 to Bert and Agnes Sheldon Warren in Bowling Green, Ohio. He spent a great deal of his early life with his grandparents.

He worked for Sun Oil Company for 45 years before his retirement. He came to the Douglass community in 1922. He married Miss Alma Glaves in El Dorado, Kansas, on July 11, 1925. To this union was born one daughter, Billie Jean. She preceded him in death in 1937. During his employment with Sun Oil Company, the Warrens lived in Russell and Iuka, Kansas. Upon retirement they moved to Florida where they have lived for the last five years.

"Bill," as he was called, was a member of the Catholic church, but attended the United Methodist Church consistently. He is survived by his wife, of New Port Richey, Florida; one brother, William, North Webster, Indiana; one sister, Mrs. Nellie Sparks, Marion, Indiana, fifteen nephews and nieces and numerous grand-nieces and nephews.

Services were held at the Douglass United Methodist Church on Monday, November 1, 1971, at 11:00 a.m.

Rev. B. E. Faulkner officiated. Mrs. C. A. Ogg played as organ solos "Peace in the Valley", and "Softly and Tenderly."

Bearers were Jack Glaves, Melvin Glaves, Dick Olmstead, Leon Atkerson, Garnett Pate, and Jerry Glaves.

Interment was in Douglass Cemetery. Hilyard Funeral Home in charge. (Douglass Tribune, November 1, 1971)

WHITNEY, LILLIAN

Mrs. L. Whitney, 91, Dies, Rites, Set at Douglass

Funeral services will be held at the Douglass United Methodist Church at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon for Mrs. Lillian Whitney, 91, who died at the Colonial Manor at Douglass Thursday. The Rev. B. E. Faulkner will conduct the services. Interment will be in the Douglass cemetery.

Mrs. Whitney was born at Churubsco Ind., on Dec., 29, 1880, the daughter of David and Flabia Graunlich. She went to the Douglass vicinity in 1909.

She was a member of the Douglass United Methodist Church and the Women's Christian Society.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Amos, on Nov. 10, 1953.

Survivors include a son, David Whitney of Douglass, a daughter Mrs. Flavia Woods of Mulvane, a sister Mrs. Mary Barcus of Churusbusco and four grandchildren. (El Dorado Times, April 28, 1972)

DOUGLASS - Mrs. Amos (Lillian) Whitney, 91, died Thursday. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in United Methodist Church.
