BARRY, ROBERT EUGENE

Robert Eugene Barry, 83, Douglass, passed away on May 8, 2006, in Augusta at the Lakepoint Nursing Facility.

A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on July 8, 2006, at Roselawn Cemetery in Salina.

He was born to Emma and John Barry on March 16, 1923. Robert was baptized and confirmed at Messiah Lutheran Church in Lindsborg. He attended Lindsborg public schools and graduated from high school in 1941. He played on the high school football team and was a football enthusiast all of his life, with Notre Dame and the Kansas City Chiefs being his favorite teams.

After high school graduation, Robert followed in his father's footsteps and went to work for the Missouri Pacific Railroad as an operator/telegrapher in 1941. On Dec. 6, 1941, he married Martina Herman and they had a daughter, Sharon Sue. He joined the United States Navy in 1941 and served during World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1945 and resumed work with the Missouri Pacific Railroad.

A few years later Robert married Wanda Virginia Lusk (Ginger) and together they had four children, Penny, Linda, John and Marlene.

Robert was later promoted to station agent for the Missouri Pacific Railroad at Salina. He married Lucille McBride and they lived in Salina until her death in 1983.

After retiring from the railroad, he moved to Council Grove and married Hollis Dickerson (Wally). They were active members of the United Methodist Church. Wally passed away in 2002. Robert spent his remaining years in Douglass close to his family.

His survivors include: children, Sharon (Ken) Berry, Penny (Mike) Ribble-Nelson, John (Karen) Barry, Marlene (Shane) Mussat; brother, Charles (Mary) Barry; ten grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by: wives, Ginger, Lucille, and Wally; sister, Ora Lee Barry; daughter, Linda Ruddick.

Memorials may be made to Lakepoint Nursing Facility in Augusta.

BATES, AUDINE M.

Audine M. Bates, 94, was born in Butler County, near Leon, on October 2, 1911, and died in LakePoint Nursing Center, Augusta, on Wednesday, May 17, 2006. Audine was a resident of Augusta for 73 years.

The funeral will take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 20 at Headley Funeral Chapel, 813 State Street, Augusta.

Visiting hours will be from 5:30 to 8 p.m., Friday, May 19, at Headley Funeral Chapel.

Audine was the daughter of Russie and Eliza Clark. She graduated from Towanda High School in 1929 and began teaching in a one-room Butler County school that same year. She taught two years at Whitewater, KS., and three years at Elm Creek School, northeast of Augusta.

Audine married Harvey C. Bates of Augusta on August 27, 1933. They were married in his grandmother's home at 337 Main Street and raised their three children, Janice, Karen, and Kent, to adulthood in that home. Harvey died in 1971, and after his death, Audine completed their home at 1215 Euclid St., where she lived alone until 10 days before her death.

Audine was preceded in death by her daughter Karen, and her sister, Delma "Dode" Wilson (husband Woody) as well.

Audine is survived by her son Dr. Kent Bates and his wife Sharon, Chillicothe, IL.; her daughter Janice and her husband, Dr. Lewis Patterson, Westlake, OH.; her brother, Dr. Wayne Clark and his wife Shirley, Bella Vista, AR.; her grandchildren, Aaron Bates, Naperville, IL.; Elizabeth Patterson Supinski and husband Mark, Monument, CO.; and Dr. Sara Bates and husband Lt. Chris Czaplak, La Plata, MD.; her great-grandchildren, Nathaniel, Alexander, and Catherine Supinski, Monument, CO., as well as her special neighbors and many friends and relatives.

Audine was a member of the First Christian Church of August and served on its board when she was President of the Christian Women's Fellowship. She served more than 9 years as the church's wedding reception manager. She belonged to the Friday Review Club of Wichita, was active in PTA and was a leader for Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts.

Donations may be made in her memory to LakePoint Nursing Center of Augusta or a charity of choice.

BEARD, VERA

Vera Beard, 87, Augusta, died on Monday, May 8, 2006.

Graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, at Elmwood Cemetery in Augusta. Those attending should use the 12th Street entrance to the cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until noon on Wednesday, May 10, at Dunsford Funeral Home in Augusta.

Vera was born on June 18, 1918 in Little Rock, Ark. She lived most of her adult life in Augusta.

Her survivors include: son, Bob and wife, Connie of El Dorado; sisters, Nina Mynhier of Henrietta, Okla., and Cyble Johnson of Holdenville, Okla.; two grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

COOPER, EDITH

Edith Cooper, 90, Towanda, resident of Lakepoint Nursing facility in Augusta, died on Saturday, May 6, 2006.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, at the Kirby-Morris Funeral Home in El Dorado. Burial will follow at Sunset Lawns Cemetery in El Dorado.

Edith was born on June 10, 1915 in Avoca, Ark., the daughter of Asbury and Dora Dean Moore. She lived in the Butler County area most of her life. On Sept. 30, 1949, she married Paul Cooper in Bentonville, Ark. He died in 1997. Edith worked for Howard Johnson's on the Kansas Turnpike and was a school bus driver for Cole Creek School. She loved being a mother and grandmother.

Surviving family includes: son, John and his wife, Barbara Cooper of Hutchinson; daughters, Mary and husband, Tom Gaither, Bobbi Daniels, all of McAllen, Texas, and Judy Turner of Wichita; brother, Kenneth Moore of El Dorado; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by one son, one daughter, and two sisters.

GILLIAND, ROWENA M.

Rowena M. Gilliand, 93, Augusta, homemaker, passed away Tuesday, May 2, 2006 in Whitewater.

Viewing will be from 1 to 8 p.m. on Thursday; funeral service at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 5, all at Headley Funeral Chapel, Augusta.

Mrs. Gilliand was born in Furley on Dec. 8, 1912, the daughter of George and Cora (Patterson) Meyer. On April 19, 1936, she married John R. Gilliand in Sunnydale. He preceded her in death on Oct. 7, 1964. Three brothers, two sisters, a grandson, and a great-grandson preceded her in death as well.

She is survived by: sons and daughters-in-law, Harry and Chris of Augusta and John and Colleen of Andover; daughters, Karen Murphy of Valley Center and Janet Gilliand of Augusta; eight grandsons; five great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.

Memorials may go to the TRI-C Sunday School Class at the First Baptist Church in Augusta.

SCRIBNER, LLOYD

Lloyd Scribner, 68, Augusta, passed away Tuesday, May 23, 2006.

Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. on Friday, May 26, with family to greet friends from 4 to 6 p.m. at Headley Funeral Chapel, Augusta.

Lloyd was born in Anton, Colo., on Sept. 25, 1937, the son of Glen and Marie (Wells) Scribner. He worked as a custom boat cover fabricator at Bailey's Custom Covers in Augusta.

Survivors include: companion, Edie Nauman, of the home; stepson, Jeff Nauman, Lander, WY; brothers, Bruce of Perkins, Okla., Garry of Payton, Colo., and Larry of Little Rock, Ark.; sister, Elaine Schuette of Apache Junction, Ariz.; step-grandchildren Ross and Jennifer Nauman.

Memorials in lieu of flowers to American Cancer Society or to the donor's choice.

WEBB, THOMAS H.

Thomas H. Webb, 66, Augusta, passed away on Friday, May 19, 2006.

Graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, at Bloomington Cemetery, rural Leon.

His survivors include: daughter, Kirsten (George) of Branson, Mo.; foster daughter, Judy Smith of El Dorado; seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary.
