Driver Killed in Train Crash
Douglass Man's Car Plows into Freight
Augusta, Kan. Oct. 27 - A 65 year old Douglass, Kan., man was killed instantly Saturday night when his automobile plowed into an 80 car freight train near Augusta, Kans.
The dead man was identified as Felix Merritt Clay. He was alone in his car at the time of the crash.
Clay was killed shortly after 9 p.m. His car struck the 18th car from the rear of a Santa Fe freight train. Clay was traveling north on Lake Road when he came to the crossing which is four and two tenths miles south of U.S. Highway 54. Lake Road joins the highway about three miles west of Augusta.
Didn't see Train
According to Trooper Don Lindensmith of the State Highway Patrol, Clay apparently did not see the train until after his car had mounted a low knoll just south of the crossing.
Clay's car left 300 feet of skid marks. The trooper said Clay was traveling at a high rate of speed.
The man's automobile which was demolished, was carried 81 feet by the train.
The engineer of the train F. B. MacWire, Emporia, Kan., said he did not see the car approaching the crossing. At the time of the accident the engine of the train was considerably west of the crossing.

Alma Bell Cline Rites Announced
Douglass, Kan - July 9 Funeral services for Mrs. Alma Bell Cline, 77, who died Friday in El Dorado will be held Monday at 2:30 p.m. at the Hilyard Funeral Home in Douglass. The Rev. Harry S. Scott, retired minister of Wichita, will officiate.
Mrs. Cline was born Nov. 7, 1877 at Flemingsburg, Ky. She had been a resident of the Douglass community for the past 40 years. Her husband, Gideon Cline, died February 22, 1948.
Survivors include one son, Alva, of Douglass, two daughters, Mrs. Ray Forbes of Douglass and Mrs. Adie Estelle, of Shelby, Ind., and Mrs. Mayme Cline of Douglass; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

MR. FORREST L. RADER
Forrest L. Rader, age 90, a resident of Wichita, Kansas and formerly Piedmont, passed away Monday, April 6, 2009
at the VA - Transitional Living Center in Wichita, where he had resided since the age of 85.
He was born on Feb. 17,1919 in Piedmont, Kansas the son of Ray and Ethel (Mullinax) Rader. During World War II
Forrest served his country in the United States Army. He earned the rank of Staff Sergeant of a machine gun platoon
of the Company "M" 320th Infantry. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. After the
war Forrest went to work for 32 years at Cessna Aircraft as a tool and die maker.
Forrest was united in marriage to Donna Schnieder and to this union a son and daughter was born, they later divorced.
He enjoyed quail hunting and helping his son Ron on his ranch near Piedmont. He also served as a Boy Scout Leader.
Forrest is survived by one son Ron Rader of Piedmont; one daughter Carol Jones of Clinton, Mo.; six grandchildren:
Ty Rader, Travis Rader, Kayla Rader, Dennis Jones, Tami Jones, and D.J. Jones and numerous great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Howard Rader and one grandson. Graveside funeral services
with military honors were held Saturday, April 11, 2009 at the Piedmont Cemetery with Pastor Robin Haines officiating.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the VA - TLC Unit in Wichita and may be left with the funeral home.

LONG A BUTLER RESIDENT DIES AT BROWNTOWN TODAY
A resident of Butler county since he was four months old, George William Walden, 69, died at his home in the Browntown neighborhood at 6 o'clock this morning after an illness of only one hour. He was engaged in farming during his entire life.
The Browntown resident was born in Herington, Ky, the son of Mary and Alic [sic][Addison] Walden. In 1895 he was married to Florence Grant.
In addition to his widow, he is survived by three brothers, Basil of Broken Bow, Okla., John of Honey Grove, Tex. and Charles of Harrington, Tex.; two sisters, Mrs. Ida Nirkirk [sic][Neikirk] of Ponca City, Okla. and Mrs. Lena Skalden [sic][Skadden] of Danville, Ill. Walter Freeman is a nephew and Mrs. Claud Markley is a niece of the deceased.
Mr. Walden was a member of the Methodist church.
He attended church services at the Cumberland church where Rev. H.S. Scott of Douglass held services.

Services for Gary Gene Fike, 19, of 343 Hillside, who died Tuesday were held Friday afternoon at the Kirby Morris Funeral Home Chapel with burial and graveside services at the Greenwood Cemetery at Council Grove.
The Rev. Vernon White officiated at the services
in El Dorado and the Rev. Maynard Rodell officiated at the graveside services. Mrs. Carol Harshbarger was the organist

Funeral services for Joseph W. Golden, 64, Arkansas City, brother of Mrs. Jeanne Crouse, Douglass, were held at the Rindt Memorial Chapel in Arkansas City at 2 this afternoon. Sam L. Crain and Kent T. Evans officiated and burial was in the Riverview Cemetery there.
The retired owner-operator of the Golden service station in Arkansas City died Wednesday at the Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. A memorial has been established with the Kansas Lung Association.
He was born April 4, 1913 at Arkansas City as a son of Joseph Edward and Inez Barnes Golden. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
He married his wife Sarah, who survives in a ceremony at Newkirk, Okla., on June 5, 1937.
In addition to his wife and Mrs. Crouse, Mr. Golden
leaves a daughter, Mrs. Joe (Dixie) Wade, Sedan, two sons, Joseph M. Golden, Wichita, and Larry W. Golden, Arkansas
City; his mother; three brothers, Leonard and Norman, both of Arkansas City and John W., Sarcoxie, Mo.; three other
sisters, Mrs. Lillian Thomas, Birmingham, Ala., Mrs. Isabell Nagel, Arkansas City, and Mrs. Ruth Knowlton, St.

Mrs. Carrie Ruth Goodwin, 85, of 1253 South Summit died Tuesday afternoon at the Wilson County Hospital at Neodesha.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Dietz-Carlson Colonial Chapel with burial in the Burns Cemetery.
Mrs. Goodwin was born Feb. 7, 1892 in Ellis County, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Payton. She married Pearley Goodwin Jan. 7, 1914 at El Dorado and the family farmed 7 miles northeast of Burns in Chase County. Mr. Goodwin died Jan. 8, 1948 and Mrs. Goodwin continued to live on the farm until moving to El Dorado in 1957.
She was a member of the First Christian Church of El Dorado and the Grandmothers Club.
Survivors include two sons, Chester of El Dorado and Jack of Neodesha; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Margaret Goodwin of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a brother, Fred Payton of Strong City; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her parents,

Mrs. Pearl Grandy, 69, of Rosalia, died Thursday evening at the Eureka Nursing Home.
Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the White Chapel Memorial Garden in Wichita.
Mrs. Grady was born July 30, 1908 at Leon, the daughter of Theodore and Lulu Harris Sutter. She moved to El Dorado in 1927 with her parents and graduated from El Dorado High School. She married Charles Grady March 16, 1941, Wichita and he died May 3, 1960. She lived in Wichita until 1976 then moved to Rosalia to live with her brother. She attended the Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Patrica Bryan of Udall; a brother, Earl Sutter of Rosalia; two sisters, Mrs. Mildred boss of El Dorado and Mrs. Neva Smith of Wichita. Two grandchildren and two step-grandchildren also survive.
She was also preceeded in death by her parents.
Dietz-Carlson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

She was born March 21, 1906 in Washita, Okla., to William and Mary Justice Law. She married Rudolph James March 6, 1931 in Chickasha, Okla.
James was a member of the Douglass United Methodist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a retired telephone operator for Southwestern Bell.

Myra Evangeline (Mrs. John Elmer) Jeffries, 75, of Augusta died February 1.
No services will be held. The body will be cremated with disposition at sea.
She is survived by a sister in law Mrs. Joe C. Albert of Wichita.

MAXINE
Maxine Johnson, 48, Newton, died Monday at Bethel Hospital Newton.
Services were held Wednesday at the Draper Cannon Funeral Home, Newton with graveside services in Oklahoma City.
She was born Oct. 23, 1929 in Eureka and lived in El Dorado for most of her life.
Survivors include her husband, Garland of the home; three daughters, Melody of the home; Mrs. Debra Bracha and Mrs. Linda McKinney, both of Newton, two sons, Ralph Palmer and Roy Brought both of Newton; her father, Max Casto, Newton; two brothers, Elmso Casto, El Chaon, Calif.; and Andrew Casto, Wichita; four sisters, Mary Parks, Newton, Arvada Barnes, Wichita; Elva Kinglsey and Elsie Ross both of El Dorado and eight grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her mother, three

Services for Lewis V. King, 66, were held Sunday
at Kirby Morris Funeral Home with burial following in Sunset Lawns Cemetery. He died March 26, 1991.
The Rev. Danny Langley officiated the services. Marge Marsh was the organist. Musical selections were "Somewhere
My Love" and "Beyond the Sunset."
Casket bearers were Matt Boxberger, Johnnie Cawthorn, Paul Kilgore, John Smith, Jr., Charles J. McGoyne and David

Lloyd C. King, 96, of El Dorado, retired teacher and farmer, died Wednesday morning Sept. 25, 1991 at Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Carlson Funeral Home with burial following in Sunset Lawns Cemetery. Masonic services will be Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Carlson Funeral Home with C. Verne Myers as orator.
He was born July 24, 1895 in Bloomington Township to Edward and Alice Luzadder King. He graduated from Wichita High School in 1918 and Fairmont College in 1920. He was a teacher and superintendent at Andover. He taught at coepland, Kansas City business College, Northwestern College, Chicago, and Central Business College, Winfield. He later farmed in Bloomington Township.
On June 18, 1924 he and Dorothea Sharp were married in Kansas City, Kan. His memberships include First Baptist Church, Butler County Retired Teachers; Fellowship Club, Masonic Lodge, York Rite, and was a past commander of the Commandary.
Survivors include wife, Dorothea, sons, Edward S. Huntsville, Ala., Lloyd C. Jr., of Fort smith, Ark., Kenneth R. of Leon, Keith A. of Carson City, Nev., Donald L. or Richardson, Texas; 18 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and one grandson.
A memorial has been established with First Baptist
Church. The Rev. Dick Sipe, pastor of the First Baptist Church will officiate the services. Jean Plummer will be
the organist and the songs, "Rock of Ages," "Whispering Hope," and "How Great Thou Art,"

KING, MARY
BESSIE
Mary Bessie King, 65, of Emporia, homemaker, was
found dead Saturday, Oct. 26, 1991. Services were held today at Memorial Lawn Cemetery.
Survivors include: son, Samuel E. of El Dorado.
A memorial has been established with the United Pentecostal Church. Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home had the arrangements. (El Dorado Times, October 29, 1991)
Elwyn E. Little, 96, of Douglass, Kansas, passed away Friday morning, November 27, 2009 at Medicalodges in Douglass.
Born October 13, 1913 in Derby, Kansas, he was
the son of William and Beryle (Mitchell) Little. He spent some of his young childhood in Oklahoma and later returned
to Derby, where he graduated from Derby High School in 1932.
Elwyn was united in marriage to Mildred F. Valentine on December 24, 1950 in Douglass, Kansas. The couple made
their home in Douglass where they farmed until 1959. They moved to Atlanta, Kansas until 1984 when they returned
to Douglass. Elwyn bought a school bus and was the first school bus driver for the Douglass school district. He
also worked at Boeing, and was a custodian for the Atlanta High School. He worked for the Butler County and Cowley
County Extension Services, where he was a Dairy tester. After retirement, Mr. Little went back to work for the
Douglass school district where he drove a school bus and later worked in the maintenance and lawn department. Mrs.
Little preceded him in death on May 10, 2005.
He was a member of the Douglass United Methodist Church and was a founder of the Douglass Senior Citizens' Center
and served as president for many years. He enjoyed refinishing furniture and especially enjoyed his family. Elwyn
loved attending his grandchildren's sporting events.
His family includes: His sons: Blake Little and wife Janet of Douglass; and Brian Little and wife, Royann of Douglass;
His brothers: Elwood Little of Wichita; Duane Little of Douglass; and Bob Little of Augusta; His sisters: Trudi
Garvey of Emporia; Margret Polk of Emporia; Virginia Lamb of Oregon; and Joyce Riggs of California; His grandchildren:
Jerry Little and wife, Jordan; Ryan Little, US Navy, and wife Melinda; Andrew Little, US Marine Corp.; Katie Little;
and Travis Little. His great-grandchildren: Shelby, Kooper, Sirius, and Marley. In addition to his wife and parents,
Elwyn was preceded in death in by his brothers, Earnest and Jim, and his sister, Martha.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday morning, December 1, 2009 at 10:30 A.M. at the Douglass United Methodist
Church in Douglass. Interment will follow at Douglass Cemetery. Miles Funeral Service in Winfield is in charge
of arrangements.
A Memorial has been established in Mr. Little's name for the Douglass Senior Citizens' Center. Contributions may
