LARCOM, GOLDIA M.
Goldia M. Larcom, 72, 433 East 12th, died last night in a head on collision with a semi-trailer truck five and a half miles east of Leon on K-96.
Larcom was driving a 1973 Plymouth automobile and
was westbound when it collided with the semi-trailer in the eastbound lane according to investigators.
Raymond O. Davis, 49 Wichita was driving the truck which was loaded with 5,500 gallons of propane. He is an employee
of Bray Transport, Inc., Wichita.
Larcom was taken by Butler County ambulance to Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital in El Dorado where she was pronounced dead. Davis suffered no apparent injuries.
According to officers at the scene the Larcom vehicle was totaled and there was approximately $50,000 in damage to the semi-trailer.
There apparently was no damage to any of the 5,500 gallons of propane estimated to weight 70,000 to 80,000 pounds.
Highway patrol authorities were at the scene of the accident this morning supervising the loading of the propane to another tanker.
Services for Mrs. Larcom will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Dunsford Funeral Home and burial will be in the Elmwood Cemetery.
She was born March 20, 1906 in Fall River, a daughter of William and Elizabeth Garriott West. She married William Howard Larcom March 8, 1922 at Fredonia. He died in 1976.
Mrs. Larcom worked at Beech Aircraft before retiring. She was a former national vice president of the International Oil, Chemical, Atomic Workers Auxiliary.
Survivors include a son, Richard Larcom, Phoenix,
Ariz., daughters, Helen Bechtold and Reba Jacobs, both of Augusta, and Joyce Potts, Douglass; a sister Mary Hotchkiss,

PACKER,
CHESTER J.
Chester J. Packer, 78, of Drumright, Okla., died February 1 at Drumright after several months' illness.
Services were held Friday at the Dietz-Carlson Colonial Chapel with burial in Walnut Valley Memorial Park cemetery.
Mr. Packer was born Feb. 13, 1889 in Coler County, Illinois, the son of Ottawer and Martha Kennedy Packer. He had been a foreman for the Atlantic-Richfield Oil Company. He had lived in the Midian and Thrall communities until moving to Drumright 30 years ago. His wife, Margie, died in 1972. He was a member of the United Methodist Church.
Survivors are a sister, Mrs. Lucille Lambillotte,

Peter C. Penner, 87, Wichita, father of Roy Penner, Douglass, died Saturday at Axtell Hospital in Newton.
Services will be at 10 a.m. tomorrow at the Lamb Mortuary in Whitewater. Rev. Ernest Clark will officiate and burial will be in the Missionary Cemetery at Elbing.
He was born July 29, 1891 in York County, Nebraska to Cornelius and Wilhelmina Warkentin Penner. He married Oct. 26, 1914 in Hillsboro to Anna Lohrenz. She preceded him in death.
Penner was a retired farmer and former resident of the Whitewater area. He was a member of Eben Feld Mennonite Brethren Church in Hillsboro.

Mildred Kathryn (Mrs. Lowell) Pennington, 66, of Augusta, a retired accounting specialist for Beech Aircraft Corporation died Sunday.

She was born March 1, 1899 in Kansas to Carl and Anna Pauck. She married John Powell Feb. 3, 1920 in Independence. He preceded her in death April 12, 1961.
She was a retired clerk. She was a member of Loyal Star and Ladies Carmen Auxiliary. She attended the Lutheran Church.

Florence E. Priest, 80, of Towanda died Friday evening at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
Services were held Tuesday at the Kirby-Morris Funeral Home Chapel with burial in the Towanda Cemetery.
Mrs. Priest was born June 1, 1897 at Towanda the daughter of Sam and Lacey Corbin Murrey. On June 4, 1917, she married Louie Collins Priest in El Dorado and he died Dec. 8, 1971. Mrs. Priest was a resident of Butler County all her life and had a membership with the Central Baptist Church near Augusta.

Howard William Ray, 75, of Wichita, a retired International Association of Machinists representative and Missouri-Pacific Railroad employee died Thursday.

Mabel Ursula Robinson, 89, of 1351 Terrace Drive, El Dorado, died Thursday at the Mid-American Nursing Home.
Services for Mrs. Robinson were held in Oklahoma City, Okla., Saturday.
Mrs. Robinson was born Aug. 6, 1888 at Clay Center, the daughter of George and Arpa Sutton Precure. She was a teacher and had worked for a time at a post office in Oklahoma.
Mrs. Robinson is survived by three daughters, Mrs. A. O. Thrasher of El Dorado, Mrs. W. C. McGrew of Norman, Okla., and Mrs.Ralph Robinson of Sabetha, a brother, three sisters, eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Troy Allen Ahlstedt seven month old son of Ed and Marcia Ahlstedt, 224 N. Washington, died Thursday night at Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital apparently due to the sudden infant death syndrome. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Carlson Funeral Home. Burial will be in Sunset Lawns Cemetery.
Troy was born Aug. 29, 1980 in El Dorado.

Arthur P. Anderson, 96, Madison, died Thursday at the Madison Manor Nursing Home. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Teresa Catholic Church in Madison. Burial will be in Janesville cemetery in Hamilton.
Rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Wilson Funeral Home in Madison.
He was born Feb. 9, 1884 in Virgil, Kan., the son of Peter and Annie (Dwyer) Anderson. He married Mary Ellen Berthot April 6, 1910 in Hamilton. She preceded him in death April 19, 1978.
He was a retired farmer and stockman and a member of the St. Teresa Catholic Church in Madison. Charter member of Knights of Columbus of Olpe.
Survivors include seven sons, Leon of Hays, Albert,
Floyd and Tom all of El Dorado, Louis of Gorham, Ernest of Madison, and Raymond of Modesto, Calif., two daughters,

Mrs. Beulah Mae Anderson, 79, died Wednesday at her home in Wichita.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Gill Mortuary at Wichita with the burial in the White Chapel Cemetery at Wichita.
Mrs. Anderson was born near Haverhill Nov. 8, 1901 the daughter of Albert John and Mary Ann Lietzke. She was a life long resident of Kansas. On Nov. 18, 1951 she married Floyd Anderson at Wichita. She was employed for 10 years by the Arotex Company of Wichita prior to her marriage.
Survivors are a grandson, Paul McCormick of the home; two daughters, Norma (Mrs. Glenn) McCormick of Wichita and Lois Fredricks of Oceanside, Calif., three brothers, Virgil W. Lietzke of Carson, Calif., Harold W. Lietzke of El Dorado and Donald W. Lietzke of Augusta, six grandchildren.

Ruth Arnall, 73, 805 Sunset Lane, died Tuesday evening at Allen Memorial Hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the Kirby Morris Funeral Home, with burial in Sunset Lawns cemetery.
She was born Oct. 2, 1906 in Sycamore Township, the daughter of W. G. and Cora Hobbs Pippig. She lived all her life in Butler County. She married Kenneth G. Arnall Feb. 4, 1925 in El Dorado. He died April 2,1968.
Mrs. Arnall with her husband farmed in the Butler County area and in 1962 they became caretakers for Lake El Dorado and Lake Bluestem. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Rebecca Circle of the church.
Survivors include a son William K. Arnall, Topeka, a sister, Mrs. E. M. (Mary) Arnall, El Dorado, two grandchildren, Tom Arnall, El Dorado and Nancy Arnall, Iola; and a great-grandson, Wesley Arnall, El Dorado. She was preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth Pippig. Bedford Alvin Magnus, Manhattan, died at Mercy Regional Health Center on March 19, 2006. Services are 11 a.m. Friday, March 24, at the First Baptist Church, 2121 Blue Hills Rd., Manhattan with Rev. Karen and Alan Selig officiating. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at the Brandtford Covenant Church Cemetery, Clyde.
Bedford's family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home.
Bedford was a son of Alvin and Lillie Anderson Magnus, born in Washington County, near Brandtford on May 29, 1925. He grew up in the Brandford area and was confirmed as a teenager in the Brandtford Covenant Church near Clyde. Bedford graduated from Agenda High School in 1943 and immediately enlisted in the U. S. Marine corps and served on Iwo Jima, was there when our American flag was raised, Okinawa, Guam and occupation of Japan. He was discharged in April 1946.
In the fall of 1946, Bedford enrolled at Kansas State University in electrical engineering, graduating in 1950. He worked with Kansas Gas & Electric and KPL, Westar Energy for 38 years. He retired from Westar in Emporia as District Manager in 1990.
Bedford and Lois Folsom were married on June 2, 1948 in the Brandtford Covenant Church, Clyde. In 1991, they moved to Manhattan.
He has always been active in civic affairs in the towns in which they loved. He was Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce in El Dorado and also Emporia. He was a co-leader in starting the Endowment Fund for the Butler County Community College in El Dorado.
Bedford held memberships in the First Baptist Church, Manhattan; the President's Club at Kansas State, KSU Ahearn Club, Kansas State Alumni Association, Manhattan Catbackers Club, Manhattan Rotary Club, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the U. S. Marine 5th Amphibious Corps Signal Battalion Reunion Group. In 1991, Lois his wife organized the 5th Amphibious Corps and Signal Battalion with his Marine buddies. The group meets annually in various cities throughout the country
He was an enthusiastic supporter of Kansas State University, its academic and athletic activities. He was awarded for recognition of distinguished service in the field of engineering in 1992.
Currently Bedford was serving on the Board of Trustees for the Manhattan Retirement Foundation at Meadowlark Hills.
Survivors include his wife, Lois of the home; daughters, Sandra Magnus Cartmill and her husband, Jack of Midland, Texas, and Jan Magnus Stegmann and her husband Tom of San Jose, Calif., two grandchildren Whitney Cartmill of Dallas, Texas, and Jarrod Cartmill of Midland, Texas, two sisters, Alvina Magnus Holmes and husband Bob of Topeka and Leona Magnus Bausch of Elma, Wash.; one brother, Dale Magnus and wife Evelyn of Del City, Okla., and one brother in law Charles Dean and wife Alma of Escondido, Calif.
His parents and a sister, Julie Magnus Dean preceded him in death.

MRS. ISABELLE
H. FERRELL
The remarkable life of Isabelle Haines Ferrell ended peacefully in the early hours of Jan. 15, 2010. She died with
the same grace and dignity she had displayed for 97 years.
The only daughter of four children, she was born in Wichita on Nov. 9, 1912 to Wallace E. Haines and Laura E. Lamm
Haines. Isabelle was raised by her aunt and uncle, Patsy and CharlesKahrs.
She "moved to the Ferrell Ranch at Beaumont when she married Garland P. (Jack) Ferrell, Jr. on June 30, 1938.
Jack preceded her in death on Jan. 3, 1980. Two brothers, Wallace E. Haines, Jr. and John L. Haines, have also
preceded her in death.
Isabelle's life was one of unceasing interest and concern for family, friends, and community. She had been active
in the Beaumont Christian Church and, later, the Leon United Methodist Church. She was a member of PEG, DAR, and
Colonial Dames. Recently, she expressed her passion for community as a founding member of the Beaumont Community
Association.
Her undying love for Jack is displayed in the beautiful home she created for her family at the Ferrell Ranch. She
is survived by one brother, Henry L. Haines of Portland, Ore., four children, Eleanor I. Crank of Beaumont, Susan
F. Pokorny-Egolf of Houston, Texas, Anne Ferrell-Thomsen of Irvine, Calif., and Garland P. (Pete) Ferrell, III
of Beaumont, nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchilden.
A memorial service will be held at the Leon United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010. Memorial

Mrs. Ruth Elaine Roberts, 327 Village Road, died suddenly yesterday afternoon following a collapse believed to have resulted from reaction to a local anesthetic administered in the office of an El Dorado dentist. She was 38 years old.
Rushed to Allen Memorial Hospital, Mrs. Roberts failed to respond to emergency treatment. The attending physician said the occurrence is "extrememly rare." Mrs. Roberts had previously been administered the same anesthetic without ill effect, he said.
Mrs. Roberts had been a resident of the El Dorado and Oil Hill community since 1943.
Born May 9, 1920 in Sedalia, Mo., she lived there until she was six years old at which time she moved with her parents to Lamonte, Mo. She was a resident there for almost 16 years.
She was married to Joffre R. Roberts on Dec. 8, 1945 at Oil Hill. The family had recently completed the building of the home on Village Road.
Mrs. Roberts was a member of the Methodist Church at Dresden, Mo.
Services will be held in the Dietz-Pittman Funeral Home at 2 p.m. Thursday. Dr. O. Bill J. Rose, 75, of Burns, died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2002 at Susan Allen Memorial Hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Carlson Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Sunset Lawns Cemetery.
He was born March 29, 1926 to Lester and Bessie Jane Pernell Rose in Missouri. He was a cowboy and rancher and also a KPL employee. He lived in Cassoday for a number of years and moved to Burns in 1963. He was a member of the Wonsevue Christian Church.
Survivors include his wife of the home, a son, Ricki L. Rose of Independence; a daughter, Joyce of El Dorado; a sister, Josephine of Columbia, Mo.; four grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.
