ADAMS, EDITH

Services for Mrs. Edith Adams, 79, of Wichita, who died Thursday, will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Broadway Mortuary. Burial will be in Old Mission Cemetery.
Born in Cowley County, Kan., she came here in 1906 from Atlanta, Kan. Her husband, Bert, died in 1958.

Survivors include two sons, Robert L., Wichita and Herbert Joseph, Downey, Calif., a daughter, Mrs. Lewis R. Bowersox, El Dorado and a brother, Stanley D. Bradshaw, Vero Beach, Fla. (The Douglass Tribune, January 25, 1968)

ADAMS, IRMA J.

Irma J. Adams, 53, of Memphis, Tenn., died Thursday afternoon, Aug. 27, 1992. Services are 1 p.m. Monday at the Temple Church of God in Christ, Memphis.
She was born Sept. 21, 1938 to Bronia and Emerlean Gooden Walker in Holly Grove, Ark. She was a teacher in West Memphis for 25 years. On Sept. 2, 1962, she and Carlton L. Adams were married in Pine Bluff, Ark.

Survivors include, husband, Carlton; daughter, Deborah Mabry of Fulda, Germany; parents, Bronia and Opal Walker of El Dorado, sisters, Vallie Kimble of Raytown, Mo., Martha Johnson of Arlington, Texas., Victoria Murray of Pittsburg, Calif., brother, Lorenzo Bryant of Kansas City, Mo., Clarence Walker of El Dorado, Robert Walker of Newton, William Houston of New York, New York.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Emerlean Walker and two brothers, Bronia Jr., and Ulysee.

ADES, CRAIG ALAN "SHORTY"

Craig Alan "Shorty" Adams, 18, of El Dorado, Pioneer Balloon Factory employee, died Sunday, July 19, 1992. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Saturday in the Leon City Cemetery.

He was born March 18, 1974 in Wichita to Ronald and Cathye (Burden) Ades and lived in the El Dorado area all his life.

Survivors include: wife, Janice Thompson at home, son, Dakota, stepdaughter Micah, both at home, mother and stepfather Vernon and Cathye Rood of El Dorado, brothers Andrew, Anthony, both of El Dorado, sister, Angela Ades of El Dorado; paternal grandparents, Clifford and Josephine Ades of Augusta; maternal grandmother, June Burden of Augusta; two nieces, one nephew. AKINS, CARL B.

Carl B. Akins, 47, of Wichita, A Butler county native, died Tuesday morning at St. Francis hospital in Wichita after an illness of several months.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Dietz-Pittman Colonial chapel, with burial in Richland Cemetery near Douglass.

A barber, Mr. Akins was born at Leon on Sept. 19, 1921. He moved to Wichita from California in April after living at Sacramento, Calif., for 20 years. He was reared in the Leon and El Dorado area.

Mr. Akins was a member of the Christian church.

Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Earl V. Anderson, 509 South Summit street; a brother, Paul Akins of Sacramento; two sisters, Mrs. Bernice Bailey of El Dorado and Mrs. Rogene Washburn, 309 East Twelfth avenue, a son, Kenneth Lee Akins, three daughters, Mrs. Connie Darling of El Dorado, Paula Marie Akins and Judy Akins, both of St. Joe, Calif. ALLEN, ROY

Services for Roy Allen, 71, of Wichita, a former Missouri Pacific railroad employee who died Friday, were held today in downing Mortuary Downtown. Burial was in White Chapel Memorial Gardens.

Born in Custer, Okla., he was a Wichita resident since 1917.

Survivors include his widow, Mary; a daughter, Mrs. Florlene Monroe, Wichita; two brothers, George, Wichita and Gerald, El Dorado and two sisters, Mrs. Louella Ketchel Whittier, Calif., and Mrs. Lucille Martin, Wichita. (The Douglass Tribune, June 23, 1969)

ANDERSON WILLIAM RAY

Services were held Saturday at the Kirby Funeral Home Chapel for William Ray Anderson of 1420 Cave Springs, who died September 26 in Four Seasons Nursing Center. The Rev. Thomas J. Bennett, interim pastor of the First Christian Church, officiated. Larry Patton sang "In the Garden," with Mrs. H. W. Bullerdiek as organist. The casket bearers were William R. Anderson, John W. Anderson, Frank R. Jackson, Fred J. Jackson, Robert L. Miller, Dennis Piper and Phillip L. Hedrick. Interment was in Sunset Lawns.

A resident of El Dorado since coming here from Sublette in 1936, Mr. Anderson was born August 17, 1886 in Mercer County, Ill., and was married to Catherine Denton November 7, 1910. Her death occurred December 17, 1960.

Prior to the retirement in 1955, he operated a service station for 17 years. For a number of years after coming to Kansas from Missouri in 1918, he engaged in farming in Haskell and Pratt counties. (The Douglass Tribune, October 3, 1968)

ARMSTRONG, NONA M.

Services were pending Sunday for Mrs. Nona M. Armstrong, 77, of Wichita.

Born in Morgan County, Mo., she came to Wichita from El Dorado in 1923. She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Altar Society, Newman Book Club, St. Francis Hospital Auxillary and Needlework Guild.

Survivors include her widower, Thomas M.; three sons, J. Leo, Rose Hill; T. J, Mulvane, and Jerry of the home; a daughter, Mrs. Wilbur Kruse, Wichita; two brothers, Frank and Ross McDonough, both of Wichita and a sister, Mrs. Josephine Adams, El Dorado.

AUER, VICTOR MRS.

Death Comes to Mrs. Victor Auer

Mrs. Victor Auer, 66, of El Dorado Route 4, a lifetime resident of Butler county, died this morning at Allen Memorial hospital after being suddenly stricken at her home Tuesday.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Dietz-Pittman Colonial Chapel, with Dr. Joe Riley Burns, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Belle Vista cemetery.

Mrs. Auer was born Aug. 9, 1902, in the Snow community southwest of El Dorado. She graduated from the Snow school and from El Dorado High School and taught in the Elm Creek and Spring Dale schools near El Dorado. She was married on May 4, 1924, at El Dorado.

Mrs. Auer was a member of the First United Methodist church ; of the Woman's Society of Christian Service; of Susannah French Putney chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution and of the West Branch Extension Homemakers unit.

Surviving are her husband, a son, Duane Auer of El Dorado Route 4, a daughter, Mrs. Lois Clifton of El Dorado, Route 4; a brother, James R. Nuttle of El Dorado, Route 1; and a siser, Mrs. Carl Nyland of El Dorado Route 3. There are six grandchildren.

A memorial in Mrs. Auer's name has been established at the First United Methodist Church. (The Douglass Tribune, January 2, 1969)

CLUM, LEHMAN

Douglass resident dies while hunting

Lehman Clum, 68, Douglass, died Thursday of a heart attack while hunting. Services will be at the Hilyard Funeral home in Douglass at 2 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be at the Conway Springs Cemetery.

Survivors include four brothers, Claude Clum, and Raymond Clum, both of Wichita, Lynn Clum, Augusta and Bruce Clum, Conway Springs, and two sisters, Mrs. Lelia Mercer, El Monte, Calif., and Mrs. Dessa Knackstedt, Paola. (The Douglass Tribune, January 28, 1971)

DENNIS, CHRISTOPHER SUMMERL

Christopher Summerl Dennis, age 93 years, died at Trinity Hospital, Dodge City, Kansas Saturday, April 10, 1971.

Son of Daniel and Mary Dennis was born at Gilford Court House, North Carolina, March 15, 1878.

He was married to Grace Ann Conroy on February 6, 1917.

They came to Douglass in 1918. He was a barber for many years in Douglass.

They moved to Ft. Dodge, Kansas on May 16, 1962.His wife Grace preceded him in death in December 15, 1963.

Survivors are two sons, Robert S. dennis, Tulsa, Oklahoma and Richard Dennis, Tulsa, Oklahoma; two sisters, Mrs. Jessie Jones, oxford; Mrs. Mae Brown, Holyrood.

He was a member of the A. F. & A. M. No. 151 in Douglass and the First Christian Church of Douglass.

Services were held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 13, 1971 at Hilyard Funeral Home. Rev. Coin W. Rees officiating.

Mrs. C. A. Ogg played as organ solos "In the Garden" and the "Old Rugged Cross."
Masons were bearers and gave committal services.

DOWNEY, BETTY JANE

Betty Jane Downey, the wife of Lt. Col. (Ret.) Tom Kenneth Downey of 8640 Victoria road, Kings Park, Springfield, Virginia, died of cancer Sunday morning July 18 in Fairfax Hospital, following along illness.

Lt. Col. Downey, along with his sister Gertrude Seacap of Emporia, grew up in the Douglass area and graduated from the Douglass Schools.

A charter member of Providence United Presbyterian Church, Mrs. Downey had been active in religious, charitable, and social activities throughout her life as an army dependent in various parts of the United States, Germany and Japan. She was a member of the P. E. O. sisterhood.

Betty Jane Reeves was born July 20, 1915, in Sibley, Iowa, and was a graduate of Iowa State University in Ames.

Mrs. Downey is survived by her husband, Lt. Col. (ret.) Tom Kenneth Downey; two daughters, Mrs. Michael H. Graham, Poughkeepsie, N. Y., and Margaret, a student in Iowa State University and a son, Robert E. Downey, a captain in the U. S. Army, stationed in the military district of Washington.

Funeral services were conducted at the Providence United Presbyterian Church, Fairfax at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, July 20 with interment in Culpepper National Cemetery, Caulpepper, Va. (The Douglass Tribune, July 29, 1971)

ELDER, BARTON

Barton Elder passed away November 11, 1971, at 6:20 p.m. at the Osteopathic hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he had been a patient for two weeks following a heart attack.

Barton was born August 20, 1885, in the Bodarc Community. He grew to manhood in and around Douglass. He has operated stores in several towns in Kansas and Oklahoma, finally settling in Ralston, Oklahoma, where he lived with his wife Frances M., who preceded him in death on December 1966.

The last 30 years he has been a traveling salesman, traveling through Oklahoma, Texas, and Kansas.

A memorial service was held for him in the Ralston Federated Church at 4:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon. He was then taken to Martha, Oklahoma for interment at the Martha Cemetery.

He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Mattie Clay of Douglass and ?, several nieces and nephews. (The Douglass Tribune, Thursday, November 18, 1971)

FREEMAN, BETH ANN

Child Hangs Self On Venetian Blind Cord

Beth Ann Freeman, 3 strangled to death on a venetian blind cord in her home about 14 miles south of here.

The child daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Warren Freeman, was sitting on the arm of a divan when she wrapped the cord around her neck and fell off the divan.

Her mother, who was out of the house at the moment, found the girl on the floor.

She is survived by her parents and a sister, Linda Ann, nine months old. (Atchison Daily Globe, Friday, July 2, 1954)

FITZPATRICK, INEZ CISSNE

Word was recieved last Saturday of the passing of Mrs. Inez Cissne Fitzpatrick, Salina, Kansas. She was a sister of the late Jennie Owen.

The Cissne family lived here in an early day. Inez graduated from Douglass High School with the class of 1897. For a number of years she taught school. After her marriage, she made her home in Salina.

She was a prominent church, club and social worker and a leader in civic organizations.

Funeral services were held for her Monday in Salina. (The Douglass Tribune, May 7, 1971)

GRAVES, GEORGE

George Graves, age 72, was found dead in his home on Friday, May 24, 1974 at 12:45 p.m.

George moved to Douglass from Wichita. He is a brother of Mrs. Earl Capansky of Douglass. (The Douglass Tribune, 1974)

GUNTER, PEARL Y.

Funeral services are pending for Mrs. Pearl Y. Gunter, 70, of Douglass, who died Monday. The rites will be held at Flanagan-Hunt Mortuary at Wichita.

Mrs. Gunter was born at Vilonia, Ark., and went to Douglass in 1965. She was preceded in death by her husband.

Survivors include two sons, David Gunter of Douglass and Dennis Gunter of Rose Hill; a brother, O. A. Stevens of Amarillo, Tex.; and two sisters, Mrs. G. I. Dallas of Vilonia and Mrs. Ollie Frazier of Walnut Creek, Calif. (The Douglass Tribune, February 24, 1971)

GUY, HAZEL ANNE

Funeral service will be held at the Dunsford Funeral Home Chapel at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon for Hazel Anne Guy, 62, who died at the Augusta Medical Complex Sunday. The Rev. John Saville will conduct the services. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery.

Hazel Guy was born Aug. 18, 1912, at Newton, the daughter of J. G. and Mable S. (Crawford) Clark. She was married to Albert Guy at Dallas, Texas., on December 14, 1944.

She moved to Augusta in 1918 from Newton and was a member of the United Methodist Church and 99's Inc.

Survivors include her widower; two brothers, Paul Clark of Greybull, Wyo., and John Clark of Augusta; two sisters, Miss Vera Clark of Emporia and Mrs. Cathryn Wheeler of Baltimore, Md.; her mother, Mrs. J. HAROLD, ARTHUR S.

Funeral services will be held at 11 o'clock Saturday morning at the Webb Mortuary at Clearwater for Arthur S. Harold, 75, of Wichita, who died Wednesday. Interment will be in the Clearwater Cemetery.

Survivors include his widow, Ida; a daughter, Mrs. Ruthelma Daley of Clearwater, a sister, Miss Jess Harold of Ottawa; two half-brothers, James Ford of Douglass and Lloyd Ford of Howard; and two half-sisters, Mrs. Elsie Cold of Jetmore and Mrs. Emma Dalke of Admire. HASKEL, ANNA BELLE

Mrs. Anna Belle Haskel, 85, died Thursday in Norman Municipal Hospital after an extended illness.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Mayes Chapel of Remembrance with Dr. Hugh Williamson officiating. Burial was in the Norman IOOF Cemetery.

Mrs. Haskel was born April 16, 1886, in Douglass, Kansas. She was a member of the Woodbine Chapter 95 of the Order of the Eastern Star, Gaillardia Garden Club, Choychoma Indian Club and the First Christian Church.

She is survived by a daughter, Miss Marjorie Haskel.

Bearers were John Kuhlman, Hugh Broosk, Glen Hanley, Bill Bray, Boyce Timmons and Maurice Crownover. (The Douglass Tribune, November 25, 1971)

Mrs. A. B. Holt Passes January 15

Funeral Services Held Thursday Afternoon at Leon Baptist Church as 2:30 P. M.

Funeral services were held at the Leon Baptist Church, Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock for Mrs. A. B. Holt, who passed away at the home of her son, Herold, east of Leon, on Tuesday evening, at 8:15. The services were conducted by the Rev. Mrs. W. O. Frerichs, of Wichita.

Nancy Rosa Essex was born Dec. 1, 1860, in Rock Island County, Ill., and passed away near Leon, January 15, 1935, at the age of 74 years 1 month and 14 days. She had resided here since 1871, when she came from Illinois to Kansas, and settled on Turkey Creek. She and her husband lived for one year at the Quito trading post, then moved to the farm east of Leon where they resided for some time.

She was united in marriage with Abram Brantley Holt on August 15, 1979, at El Dorado, Kansas. They celebrated their fifty-fifth wedding anniversary just last August. To this union were born one daughter, Ida Octavia, and two sons, David Ralph and Herold O(rd), the daughter dying at the age of six years and six months. Funeral Services Held Thursday Afternoon at Leon Baptist Church at 2:30 P.M.

Funeral services were held at the Leon Baptist Church, Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock for Mrs. A. B. Holt, who passed away at the home of her son, Herold, east of Leon, on Tuesday evening, at 8:15. The services were conducted by the Rev. Mrs. W. O. Frerichs, of Wichita


Nancy Rosa Essex was born Dec. 1, 1860 in Rock Island County, Ill., and passed away near Leon, January 15, 1935, at the age of 74 years 1 month and 14 days. She had resided here since 1871, when she came from Illinois to Kansas, and settled on Turkey Creek. She and her husband (actually, father) lived for one year at the Quito trading post, then moved to the farm east of Leon where they resided for some time.

She was united in marriage with Abram Brantley Holt on August 15, 1879, at El Dorado, Kansas. They celebrated their fifty-fifth wedding anniversary just last August. To this union were born one daughter, Ida Octavia, and two sons, David Ralph and Herold O., the daughter dying at the age of six years and six months. Mr. Holt preceded her in death only last September 18th.

The deceased was a loving, devoted christian mother, who loved to be in the service of her Master, whom she has followed and served for so long. She was a member of the Leon Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sons, Ralph and Herold, of Leon; fourteen grandchildren; a number of other relatives and a host of friends.

MERSEREAU, PUTNAM MRS.

Funeral services were held at the Longton Baptist Church Saturday for Mrs. Putnam Mersereau, 78, who died last Wednesday.

Survivors include two sons, John Shurley of Douglass and Noah Shurley of Wichita and two daughters, Mrs. Mary Gaines and Mrs. Jane Reed, both of Wichita. (The Douglass Tribune, August 16, 1971)

MEYER, MARLY

Funeral services were held last Wednesday April 7, for Marly Meyer, 18 year old niece of Mrs. Irene Garcia.

Miss Meyer was killed in the East Zone of Germany, enroute to her parents home in Western Germany. She was traveling with her finance, who was also killed in the accident.

The officials in the East Zone refused to release details of the accident and would not release the girls body until the funeral director returned to the check point for the second time last Monday, and refused to leave without it. He was forced to wait at the check point for 14 hours, while the necessary arrangements were made. The body of her fiancé had not been released to his family yet earlier this week.

Donations are being accepted to help defray the expenses, as the family was charged very high expenses for transportation and a daily fee for holding the body for the period of a week and a half.

MORGAN, LESLIE B.

Leslie B. Morgan, age, 82 years, died at the Colonial Manor Nursing Home on January 2, 1971.

A resident of Kansas City, she entered the nursing home on December 2. She was the daughter of Charles M. and Sarah Beaumont, and was born on December 12, 1888, at Houston, Missouri.

September 18, 1912, she was married to William Frank Morgan. He was a U. S. department of Agriculture employee, stationed at Chicago and Kansas City prior to his death in April, 1955.

She was the mother of seven children; two of whom preceded her in death, William Beaumont and Charles Howard.

Survivors included two sons, John Paul and Edward Franklin of Kansas City; three daughters, Marilynn Israel, Kansas City, Jean Harman, Tonganoxie, and Sarah Bailey, Douglass; twelve grandchildren, three great grandchildren.

Services were held Tuesday, January 5, at the Fulton-Nickel Funeral Home in Kansas City.

Burial was in the family plot at Highland Park Cemetery. (The Douglass Tribune, January 14, 1971)

PIPER, EARLY RAYMOND

Services held for Earl R. Piper, 71, at Baptist Church

Earl Raymond Piper was born May 24, 1903, in Rosalia, KS., the son of C.V. and Alice (Hembree) Piper, and passed away in Denver, April 4, at the age of 71 years, 10 months and 10 days.

He was united in marriage to Gladys Mae Lundy at Limon, on Sept. 23, 1928, and to this union were born five children. They have made their home in Limon during their married life.

Mr. Piper was a member of the I.O.O.F. for the past 25 years, being Past Grand Patriark of the Encampment and was a retired Colonel in the military branch. He thoroughly enjoyed his Odd Fellow work.

He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, Mae, of the home; his five children. Raymond E. Piper and wife, Ramona, of Taos, N.M.; Earl LeRoy Piper of Hawthron, Nev.; Delores Brooks and husband, Walter, of Lyons; Cherie Parmer and husband, Richard, of Limon; Karol Ferrera and husband, Michael, of Louisville; 19 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; two nieces, one great niece; two great nephews; 12 great-great nephews and nieces and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Monday, April 7, 1975, at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Limon with Rev. Nick Resovich, officiating.

"In the Garden" and "Whispering Hope" were sung by Mrs. Delores Miller with Mrs. Judy Sallee as accompanist.

Casket bearers were Allan Ferrera, Raymond Piper, Jr., Brian Parmer, Theodore Ferrera, Rocky Jamison and Randy Jamison.
Honor Guard by Rogers No. l, I.O.O.F.

Interment was made in Pershing Memorial cemetery in Limon with the Love Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

PULVER, HERBERT

Services for Herbert W. Pulver, 88, retired farmer, were held Tuesday in Hilyard Funeral Home. He died Sunday in an Oxford, Kan., nursing home.

He was a native of Douglass. His wife, Mary, died in 1966.

Survivors include a son, Robert G., Wellington, Kan., and a daughter, Mrs. Virgene Byers, Abilene, Kan. (The Douglass Tribune, January 26, 1971)

STROBEL, JULIUS

Graveside services were held Wednesday afternoon in the Douglass cemetery for Julius Strobel, 87, of Douglass, who died Monday.

Survivors include three sons, Richard and George Strobbel of Kansas City, Kan., and Ben Strobel of Leavenworth a daughter, Mrs. Evelyn Harper and a brother, Frank Strobel, both of Kansas City, Kan. (The Augusta Gazette, October 16, 1974)

YOUNG, MATTIE

Funeral services will be held at the Hilyard Funeral Home in Douglass at 10 o'clock Friday morning for Miss Mattie Ellen Young, 75, who died Wednesday. Interment will be in the Argonia cemetery.

Miss Young was born in Macoupin county, Ill., and went to Douglass about 15 years ago.
