Leroy A. Abendroth, 63, of El Dorado, retired diesel mechanic, died 4 Jul 1986. Service, 10 a.m. Tuesday, Carlson Funeral Home, El Dorado, KS. ALLEY, URAL C.

Ural C. Alley Rites Friday

Funeral services will be held at the Dunsford Chapel at 2 o’clock Friday afternoon for Ural C. Alley, 74, who died at Wesley hospital in Wichita. The Rev. Daniel E. Bailey will conduct the services. Interment will be in Elmwood cemetery.

Ural C. Alley was born Jan. 14, 1893 at Mercer, M., the son of William D. and Lettie Jane (Lowery) Alley. He was manager of the T.M. Deal Lumber Yard in Augusta until he retired in 1958. He lived at Akron, Colo., prior to coming to Augusta in 1921.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Albert Jackson of Augusta and Mrs. Pat Eckles of Dallas, Tex.; two brothers, Leonard of Princeton, Mo., and Marion of Washington, D.C.; a son-in-law, L.A. SLOAN, KENNY L.

Kenny Sloan Death Listed

Kenny L. Sloan, 70, of 1201 Money avenue, died Friday morning at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita. He was the former manager of the Augusta Auto Salvage, but was retired.

Mr. Sloan was born June 27, 1906 at Ragan, Nebraska and was wed in 1943 at Carroll, Iowa to the former Dorothy Loveland, who survives.

Surviving besides the widow are a son, Robert L. of Boise, Idaho and a stepson, Arthur W. Call of Augusta; a daughter, Marilyn Vann of Sacramento, California; five stepdaughters, Mrs. Bert Winters, Pat Chrislip, and Twila Crane, all of Augusta, Mrs. Peggy Roberts of El Dorado and Mrs. Cricket Williams of Clovis, New Mexico; a sister, Mrs. Lulu Dawson of Seal Beach, California; 27 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

SIBLEY, RUSSELL

AUGUSTA--Sibley, Russell, 88, passed away Tuesday, November 9th, 2010. Visitation 6-8 p.m. Thursday and service 1 p.m. Friday, November 12, both at Headley Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery. Russell was born in Tekamah, Nebraska on June 24, 1922, the son of the late Earl Porter and Eva Goldie (Smith) Sibley. He retired as an inspector at Beech Aircraft. He served in the U.S. Army during WW II as well. On February 13, 1954, he married Sondra Fletcher in Wichita and she survives. He is also survived by daughters, Debra Gragg and husband John of Olathe, Loretta Ramsey and husband Mike of Park City and Vicki Harrelson of Augusta; son, David Sibley of Augusta; sisters, Helen McPherson of Wichita and Zela Parker of Benedict; grandchildren Emily Ramsey, Jameson Gragg, Valerie Duff, Jeremey Gragg, Matthew Harrelson; great grandchildren Shelby Duff, Braedon Duff, Halie Duff. He was preceded in death by brothers, Leroy, Joe, Edward and David; sisters Grace Shriner, Alice Bowman and Geil Smith. Memorials to the Disabled American Veterans P.O. BARE, OLAVE A.

Olave A. Bare, 66, a former Douglass resident, died Saturday, Jan. 1 at Memorial Hospital in Arkansas City. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Rindt Mortuary in Arkansas City.

He was born Jan. 23, 1916 in Douglass, the son of Homer and Lottie Bare. He attended Douglass High School and graduated in 1935. He went to college in Salina for two years and retired from Cessna after 17 years in 1976.

He was a member of the First Christian Church, the OES and the Blue Lodge all of Augusta.

He is survived by his wife, Iva of the home; two step-sons, Phillip and Red of Arkansas City; a step-daughter, Judy of Topeka, a sister, Treva Wells of Augusta; and 11 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and a sister. (El Dorado Times, January 3, 1983)

BUTLER, LEWIS I.

Lewis I. Butler, 72, of Wichita, died this morning at Augusta Medical Complex. Services will be at the Dunsford Funeral Home in Augusta. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.

He was born June 23, 1910 to Charley F. and Levina Bell Jordan Butler in Hutchinson. He was married to Vivian Cook in Wichita on Aug. 6, 1932.

He was a retired Mobil Oil Co. employee and he belonged to the Mystic Tie No. 74 and the Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include his wife, Vivian, one son, Thomas of Port Orchard, Wash., one daughter, Kellye Adams of Wichita, three sisters, Eleanor Bannon of Douglass, Ellen Johnson of El Dorado and Pearl Chambers of Wichita. (The El Dorado times, November 3, 1982)

MYERS, VIRGIE

CONDITION OF VIRGIE MYERS IS STILL GRAVE

The condition of Virgie Myers, 57-year-old engineer who fell from the second story porch of his daughter's home Monday, is quite grave, according to word from St. Luke's Hospital where he is being cared for. Mr. Myers' skull was fractured by the fall and he has been in a dangerous condition since the accident. He came here from Fayetteville, Ark., for a visit with his daughter, Mrs. George Carrier, 110 East Fourth Avenue, shortly before the accident occurred. VISITOR HERE DIES AT ST. LUKE'S HOSPITAL FROM INJURY RECEIVED FIRST OF WEEK

Virgie Myers, 57-year-old steam engineer, who fell from a second story porch while walking in his sleep early Monday morning, died at 4:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon at St. Luke's Hospital. Mr. Myers has been under care at the hospital since the accident and never regained consciousness. His is the fifty-fourth accidental or sudden death in Butler County this year.

Mr. Myers came here October 4, to visit his daughter, Mrs. George Carrier, who lives at 110 East Fourth Avenue. He came here from Scholle, New Mex., where he has been in the employ of the Lewis Construction Company, of Emporia, for the past seven years. Shortly after midnight Sunday night Mr. Myers fell from the porch on the front of the Carrier home. The family had all retired and it is believed that he was walking in his sleep when he pitched from the porch to the concrete sidewalk underneath. His skull was badly fractured by the fall.

He was immediately taken to the hospital where an operation was performed in an effort to save his life. He grew steadily worse, however, and died yesterday afternoon.

Mr. Myers was born on September 15, 1871, at Texas County, Mo. He was married to Rose Beasley on July 19, 1896. To this union nine children were born. Besides Mrs. Carrier, he is survived by four sons, Edwin, Harold, Roy, all of El Dorado, and Charles of West Plains, Mo.; two daughters, Ruby Myers and Mrs. Jack Grant, Rosalia; and his father, A. Myers, Osborne, Ark.

The funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the Christian Church of Florence. Burial will be at the Hillcrest Cemetery. The Wigginton Funeral Home is caring for the body. HIATT, ROGER D.

Roger D. Hiatt, 56, passed away while hunting.

A memorial service was held Saturday, Oct. 9, 2010 in a pasture south of El Dorado.

Roger was a beloved husband, father and grandpa and a dedicated family man. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. He loved rodeos, livestock and hunting.

He was preceded in death by his stepfather Paul Day and grandson Garrett Buthe.

He is survived by his wife Mildred Hiatt; his daughters, Kellie Willhite and Cory Buthe, Shannon (Rusty) Rhodes; his sons, Carrson Hiatt, Garrison Hiatt and Justin Miller; his mother Bernice Day of Farmington, Mo.; one brother and one sister; his grand-children, Kalee Rhodes, Ty Willhite, Reece Willhite and Clara Buthe; and many
nieces and nephews.

ALLEN, V. PAUL

V. Paul Allen Rites Friday

Funeral services will be held at the Dunsford Funeral Home Chapel at 2:30 Friday afternoon for V. Paul Allen, 69, who died at Wesley Medical Center at Wichita Tuesday. The Rev. Richard Bacon will conduct the services. Interment will be at Elmwood Cemetery.
V. Paul Allen was born Aug. 31, 1905 at Independence, Mo., the son of James and Nellie (Liddle) Allen. He was married to Clara Linder at Kansas City, Mo., on Feb. 20, 1955.

He was a member of the First Christian church at Columbia, Mo., a member of the Augusta Elks Lodge 1462 and the Masonic Lodge at Columbia. He was a salesman for the A. L. Randall Co.

Survivors include his widow; a step-son, Jim Linder of Leon; a brother, Dick Allen of Columbia; a sister, Mrs. Paul McQuerry of Sun Lakes, Ariz.; and three grandchildren. (El Dorado Times, January 8, 1975)

ARNOLD, BESS M.

Bess Arnold Dies in Newton

Mrs. Manley (Bess) Arnold, 94, died at 2 a.m. today at Axtell Christian hospital, Newton. She was a lifelong resident of the area and was a member of the First Christian church of El Dorado.

Funeral services are scheduled at the church for 3 p.m. Wednesday. Interment will be at the Augusta cemetery. Draper-Cannon Funeral Home of Newton is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Arnold was born July 25, 1879. She graduated from Augusta High school in 1895. She had been a resident of the Kansas Christian home in Newton in recent years.

She is survived by one son, Holmes, of Miami, Fla., and one grandson, Richard, of Chicago. (El Dorado Times, March 4, 1974)

FOWLER, PHOEBE

Mrs. Phoebe Fowler Dead

Mrs. Phoebe Fowler, 50 years old, died at her home in the country southeast of town on Saturday night. She was the widow of R. L. Fowler who died about a year ago. She leaves one daughter, Minnie. The funeral was held from the home this afternoon. Rev. Cole officiating the burial being in the Eastside Cemetery. (Hutchinson News, February 29, 1904, page 5)

FOWLER, ROBERT L.

R. L. Fowler of Clay township died yesterday at his home about five miles southeast of the city of pneumonia. He was sick only a little while. The funeral will be held from the family home at 2:30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. Burial will be in the East Side cemetery.
Mr. Fowler was born in 1850 at Berkin, Ill. He had lived in Reno county a number of years. A wife survives him. (Hutchinson News, March 2, 1903, page 5)

PENNINGTON, WILLIAM

William Pennington was born in Lee Co., Virginia June 6th. 1845. He was married to Mary Litton Dec.10, 1865. He was the father of 12 children. He leaves to mourn his loss 7 children, 24 grand children and 3 great grand-children. He departed this life Dec 3, 1916 age 71 years 6 months and 28 days. He united with the Baptist church when a young man.

Mr. Pennington was a soldier in the Civil War and came to Butler County in March 1887.

Funeral services were held al the Benton M. E. Church Tuesday at 11 o'clock by Rev. Blood. Interment was made in the Enterprise Cemetery. (The Benton Bulletin, December 7, 1916)

LEAGUE, WILLIAM

William League, A Pioneer Resident of Butler County Dead

William Rigley League, a pioneer resident of Butler County, died Sunday morning at 2 o'clock at his home 312 Walnut. He suffered a stroke of paralysis Friday evening from which he died later. Mr. and Mrs. League and family moved to Augusta a number of years ago from their farm near Lorena where they settled at an early date. Mr. League was past 81 years of age. He leaves a wife and several grown children.

The funeral will be held from the house at 10:30 o'clock Wednesday morning. Interment will be in the Indianola cemetery. (The Augusta Daily Gazette, January 31, 1921)

MARTIN, ISAAC

Isaac Martin Passes Away

An honest, peaceful and loved citizen of this locality passed away on Thursday last at the home of his daughter, Mrs. George Miller, on the Creswell farm on Rock Creek. It was "Uncle Ike" Martin as he was familiarly and kindly called. He had resided in this locality for 50 years.

The funeral services were conducted Friday, 2 p.m. at the Irwin Funeral Home in Douglass.

He was born in Booneville, N.C., October 3, 1847. His age was 86 years, 4 months and 19 days.

When a young man at the age of 16, he enlisted in the Confederate Army in Company I, Ninth, North Carolina, Junior Reserves, and was captured by Union Soldiers and spent the last six months of the war as a prisoner at Camp Chase in Ohio.

He was honorably discharged, June 25, 1865. It afforded him much pleasure to talk about the war and the soldiers and officers of the Southern Army, and the fine treatment he had while a prisoner. He was in active service and in several hard fought battles and had some interesting stories to tell about the soldiers. He had the Confederate Flag that he fought for and held it as a prized relic through life. As far as is known he is the last of the Confederate Soldiers in Butler County.

Mr. Martin left North Carolina in 1887 and moved to Indiana where he lived until 1884 when he came to Butler County. He was married to Miss Lettie Gunter, July 5, 1885. To this union were born three children, Mrs. Glendora Prosser, Wichita; Mrs. Lizzie Miller, Douglass, and a son who died in infancy. Mrs. Martin died December 25, 1891.

The last 21 years of his life he spent with his daughter, Mrs. Geo. Miller and Mr. Miller. He also leaves a grandson, Gerald Prosser, Wichita. He was a charter member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Bodarc, and spent much time reading the Bible and greatly enjoyed the scripture verses and morning prayer published in the newspapers.

Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Geo. Watts. Interment was in the Cumberland Cemetery. Pall bearers were: Homer Bare, Lloyd Cook, J. H. Bare, L. A. DeWater, and C. S. Berger. Very appropriate music was furnished by Mrs. J. A. Bare and her daughter, Mary and Robert and Woodrow Berger, accompanied at the piano by Miss Maude Haver. MORGAN, J. M.

J. M. Morgan, pioneer resident of Milton Township, passed away at the Axtell - Christian Hospital at Newton Friday
Mr. Morgan was the son of James and Mary Morgan, and was born and Moore County, North Carolina, on November 14th, 1848.

He married Miss Pauline Strasser, of New Jersey in 1877. To this union seven children were born. He is survived by his widow, six sons, Edward Allen, of Topeka, Arthur Lewis and John Albert of Liberal, Harvey Oliver, of Burns, George Frances, of Potwin, and Carl, at home; one daughter, Mrs. Paul Dutton, of Newton, ten grandchildren, two brothers, Riley J. of El Dorado and Edward of Manchester, Tennessee, three sisters, Mrs. Frank Markee of Stillwater, Oklahoma, Mrs. Mary A.V. Montgomery of Loveland, Colorado, and Mrs. John Garrison of Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at two o'clock at the Federated Church in Whitewater, Rev. J. H. Higdon officiating. Interment was made in the Brainerd Cemetery. (The Independent, Thursday, September 6, 1928)

JOSEPH, MOSES NATHAN

Moses Nathan Joseph was born in Tyler County, West Virginia Nov. 22 1837 and, died at the home of his son, Raleigh, July 13, 1919, at the age a 81 yrs, 7 months and 21 days.

When a young man he moved to St. Mary's, Mo. where he was united in marriage to Mary Elizabeth Garrison. Two years later they moved to Shawnee County Kansas and in 1876 they came to Butler County.

Mrs. Joseph passed away in March 1904. Of the 8 children born to this union 6 are still living. An infant died before they came to Butler Co and a daughter, Mrs. Ida Ashenfelter died in February 1911.

In early life Mr. Joseph was engage in farming and milling. He served in the Confederate Army as Dispatch Bearer in the Hansborough Battalion and later was closely associated. with the G. A R.. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge.

The children who survive him are Mrs. Orma Ullum, Haverhill; A. S Joseph, El Dorado, F. M. Joseph, Furley, Raleigh Joseph, Potwin, Mrs. Sadie Poffinbargerger, Potwin, Mrs. Maud Ralph, El Dorado. (The Potwin Ledger, July 1919, page 4, column 2)
