ALLISON, JR., BURL

Rev. Burl Allison, Jr., 96, longtime Augusta resident and local historican, author of "Augusta, Kansas 1868 ~ 1990", passed from this life on Sunday, Sept. 2, 2007.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. this evening, at Headley Funeral Chapel, Augusta. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow morning at the Augusta First United Methodist Church. Interment will be at Elmwood Cemetery, Augusta.

Burl, the eldest of seven boys, was born to Burl, Sr. and Perna (Diebold) Allison on March 25, 1911 at Christy Township, Ill. The family moved to Augusta in the spring of 1922. He graduated from Augusta High School in 1929 and attended Butler County Junior College.

On Dec. 20, 1934 he married Lois Schulz at the Methodist parsonage in Augusta. To this union three children were born; Stephen, George Michael, and Susan.

Burl owned and operated Allison's Barber Shop for many years until his retirement. He took on a second career as a Methodist minister and served in the Rosalia and Potwin Methodist Churches, as well as visitation pastor for the Augusta Methodist Church. He was very active in the Augusta community, serving on the City Council, the School Board, Chamber of Commerce, Augusta Arts Council, Augusta Historical Society, Augusta Housing Authority, and Kansas Council on Aging. With help from his wife, Lois, the local Meals-On-Wheels was reorganized and both were instrumental in forming the Augusta Community Caring Center.

Burl is survived by his children; Stephen Allison and wife, Sue of Wichita, Dr. Mike Allison and wife, Sally of Great Bend, and Susan Lytton and husband, Bob of Augusta; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by; his wife, Lois; his parents; his brothers, David Allison, John Hugh Allison, Cloyd Max Allison, Edgar Allison, Russell Allison, Dale Clifford Allison; and grandson, Chris Allison.

ALLISON, LOIS CORINNE

Lois Corinne Allison, 93, Augusta, passed away on Tuesday, May 8, 2007.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, May 10, at Headley Funeral Chapel, Augusta. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, May 11, at the Augusta First United Methodist Church. Interment will be at Elmwood Cemetery, Augusta.

Lois was born on April 19, 1914 in Greensburg to George Bismark and Mary Isadora Rose Schulz.

On Dec. 20, 1934 she married Burl Allison, Jr. at the Methodist parsonage in Augusta. To this union three children were born; Stephen, George Michael, and Susan.

For many years, she operated a beauty shop out of her home on State Street in Augusta.

She is survived by; her husband, Burl, Jr. of Augusta; sister, Marjorie Bornholdt of Overland Park; her children, Stephen Allison and wife, Sue of Wichita, Dr. Mike Allison and wife, Sally of Great Bend, and Susan Lytton and husband, Bob of Augusta; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Lois was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, Millard Schulz and Kenneth Schulz, and grandson, Chris Allison.

She was a member of Eastern Star and the First United Methodist Church of Augusta.

ALLMOND, WILLIAM "BILL" K.

William "Bill" Knox Allmond, 82, Towanda, Skelly Oil Company employee, passed away on Sunday, June 17, 2007.

Visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. this evening. Funeral service at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 20, both at Dunsford-Zeiner Funeral Home, Augusta.

He was born May 27, 1925 in Wichita to Asro and Ann Marie (Bruin) Allmond and married Jacqueline Lenore Hale on March 9, 1946. Bill served in the U.S. Marine Corp during WWII.

Survivors: sons, Dennis (Carolyn) Allmond, Mace (Wanda) Allmond; daughters, Leslie Dealy, Susan (Skip) Erhardt; brothers, James (Alma) Allmond, Thomas (Florence) Allmond; sister, Carolyn (Jeff) Hollingsworth; sister-in-law Ruby Allmond; 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

COLLING, GEORGE W.

George W. Colling, 84, Augusta, passed away on Thursday, May 17, 2007.

Viewing will be from 1 to 5 p.m. on Monday, May 21, at Headley Funeral Chapel, Augusta. Rosary at 7 p.m. Monday evening, Mass at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 22, at St. James Catholic Church, Augusta. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, Augusta.

George William Colling was born on Aug. 22, 1922 at home in McCook, Neb. He enlisted in the Army Air Corp in 1943 as a corpsman then transferred to the 3rd Army, 65th Infantry with General George W. Patton until 1945. He worked with the Nebraska Rural Electric in McCook, Neb. and moved in 1951 as the "Wichita Lineman." He was employed with Boeing as an electrical planner troubleshooter on the B47 and B52. He transferred to Delaware County, Pa. in 1963 and worked on the Huey helicopters with Boeing Vertol Division until moving back to Augusta in 1979, where he retired from Boeing after 33 years.

George is mostly known as a man who practiced the Beatitudes. His legacy was his service to the community. He was a Boy Scout leader, baseball and basketball coach for over 25 years. He was recognized by the Kansas Governor, Secretary of the Army, Chief of Staff and the Director of the Veterans Affairs for his service as "Veterans Service Officer" for the American Legion. He provided transportation for veterans, hospital visitations, honor guard at funerals, and provided grave markers for veterans as far back as the Civil War.

George and his wife Becky's involvement at St. James Catholic Church included being an Eucharist Minister, home bound and nursing home visitors, ushers, and they were extremely active at the annual Ice Cream Social. As 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, they received numerous Family and Knight of the Year, for both District and Council.

George is survived by: brothers, Harold and Joseph; sisters, Doris Clifton and Marge Malleck; sons, Martin (Jean Hochevar), Bradly (Marsha Towne), Bruce (Chris Jennings), and Brian (Loan); 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by: his father, Louis Colling; mother, Susan O'Dea; brothers, Bernard and Donald; sisters, Lucille Hill and Mildred Stratman; wives, Rebecca Combow of 53 years, and Goldie (Young) Brown of three years; and son, William Colling.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. James Knights of Columbus Seminarian Fund of Augusta, or Kansas Veterans Home.

CRYDERMAN, ROY "BUD"

Roy "Bud" Cryderman, 86, Augusta, passed away on Friday, May 11, 2007.

Viewing will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, at Headley Funeral Chapel, Augusta.

Rosary at 7 p.m. Tuesday evening and Mass at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 16, at St. James Catholic Church, Augusta. Burial will be at Walnut Valley Memorial Park, El Dorado.

Mr. Cryderman was born in Solomon on June 20, 1920, the son of the late George Luther and Augusta Louise (Luke) Cryderman. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He was an honorary member of the Knights of Columbus and a lifetime member of the VFW.

Roy started at K.G. & E. as a lineman in El Dorado and retired in 1985 as an agent in Augusta.

On Sept. 10, 1946 he married Audrey Riggs in El Dorado. She survives, along with son, Paul Cryderman and his wife, Becky of Augusta; daughter, Anita Hankins of Wichita; sister, Doris Caroll and husband, Delbert of Lexington, Neb.; grandchildren, Byron Hankins and wife LeAnn, Justin and Ryan Cryderman.

He was preceded in death by; siblings, Marie, Genevive, Raymond, Gloria, Arnold, and Robert.

Darwin L. "Buster" Dickinson, Augusta, 66, retired from Southwestern Electric and Exxon/Mobil Corp., passed away on Monday, May 14, 2007.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 17; service at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 18, all at Hillside Funeral Home in Augusta.

DONALDSON, ALVIN J. REV.

Rev. Alvin J. Donaldson, died at Pond Creek, Oklahoma, Saturday evening, August 16. Several weeks ago while assisting workman in erecting a church he fell and received a hard blow on his right side. An abscess formed and it was necessary that he be operated upon. The ordeal was too great and he did not survive it. A. J. Donaldson was born in Jefferson county, April 19, 1858. He moved to Chelsea with his parents when he was a baby. He was converted when only a boy and subsequently became a Free Methodist preacher. He married Katy Olmstead at Chelsea in 1882. He has two brothers in Central America, Ed and Harry Donaldson. His sisters, Florence Reed and Hain Wolverton, live at Holton. He was a brother of George Donaldson of Mason. He was brought to El Dorado via Wichita yesterday afternoon. The funeral party left El Dorado at noon today and he was taken to Chelsea for burial. (Walnut Valley Times, August 21, 1902)

Florence (Mrs. Alfred A. Eddings, 86, West Plains, Mo., a former Wichitian and retired maid at St. Joseph Hospital died Tuesday. Services were to be at 10 a.m. today at the Robertson Funeral home, West Plains and at 2 p.m. Friday at Quiring Old Mission Mortuary.

Survivors include nine daughters, Mrs. Lydia Rader of West Plains, Mrs. Ruth Shelton and Mrs. Dolly Garfield, both of Geuda Springs, Mrs. Iva Trent of Severy, Mrs. Ruby Jones of El Dorado, Mrs. June Harris of Derby, Mrs. Edna Hampton of Park City, Mrs. Pearl Larson of Garland, Texas and Mrs. Opal Cooper of Bella Vista, Ark. EGAN, JOSEPH P.

Services for Joseph P. Egan, 74, 703 E. 12th St. will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. John's Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Sunset Lawns Cemetery. He died Thursday morning.

Rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the Dietz-Carlson Funeral Home.

He was born Nov. 28, 1905, in El Dorado, the son of L. J. and Barbara Dreis Egan. He was a semi-retired tinsmith and had spent his entire life in El Dorado. He was a member of the St. John's Church.

On Dec. 22, 1950, he married Lucille Covert at Claremore, Okla. She survives him.

Other survivors include two sons, Tony, Houston, Texas, and James, Kansas City, Mo., one daughter, Margaret Polland, Albany, N.Y., a brother, Con, El Dorado, two sisters, Marguerite Young, Englewood, Colo., and Pansy Trapp, El Dorado and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters.

EKSTROM, CHARLES V. "CHUCK"

Charles V. "Chuck" Ekstrom of Salem, Ore., died Sept. 2, 2007.

Private interment will be at sea at a later date. Chuck requested that his friends and family celebrate his life with an old-fashioned wake.

The wake will be from 4 to 6 p.m. on Monday at Battle Creek Golf Course.

Chuck was born Sept. 3, 1931 to Nellie 'Noble' and Ferdon Ekstrom in Kansas City, Mo. He was raised on a farm in Assaria. He joined the Navy during the Korean War.

Chuck worked in retail sales until his retirement in 1993. The many stores included Bishops, Marilyn's, Shoe Box, and Men's Wearhouse. Chuck enjoyed all things golf, and was a 30-year member of Battle Creek Men's Club. He enjoyed reading, watching sports and playing cards with friends at Battle Creek.

Survivors include: his wife of 27 years, Betty "Stuhr" "Mollet" Ekstrom; daughters, Teri (David) Stephenson of Keizer and Tami (Art) Carpenter of Salem; son, Michael of Brook Forest, S.C.; stepson, Morey (Charmaine) Mollet of Sublimity; step-daughters, Margo (Dan) Standley of Garland, Texas, and Marla (Bobbie) Drake of San Antonio, Texas; 11 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and brother, Jim (Julie) of El Dorado.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Nellie and Ferdon; his father-in-law, Clifford Stuhr; and his step-son, Marty Mollet.

ELLIS, VERA

Vera Ellis, 75, 414 S. Star died Saturday morning at Susan B. Allen Memorial hospital Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in the Kirby-Morris Funeral home.

Burial will follow the services in Sunset Lawns cemetery.

Mrs. Ellis was born Nov. 7, 1904 in Plains, Kan., the daughter of Joseph and Sadie (Lathrop) Frederick. She came to El Dorado area in 1921 from Plains.

Mrs. Ellis was preceded in death by two husbands, George Nelson and Jacob Ellis. She was formerly employed by Sarah Griggs Nursing home. She attended the Nazarene church and was a member of the V. F. W. Auxiliary.

Survivors include three sons, Ralph, Roy and Robert Nelson, all of El Dorado, one daughter, Mrs. Opal Golding, El Dorado, one sister, Bessie Frederick, El Dorado, one step brother, Clayton E. Cox, El Dorado, nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, one brother and one sister. (El Dorado Times, Sept. 13, 1980)

EPPERSON, ROSA

Rosa E. Epperson, 81, 812 Walnut, died Sunday at the home of her daughter, after a lengthy illness. Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday at the Dietz-Carlson Colonial Chapel. Burial will be in the Sunset Lawns Cemetery.

Mrs. Epperson, a retired domestic housekeeper, was born May 6, 1899 at Oklahoma City, the daughter of Arthur and Nancy Small Cook.

She moved at an early age to Kansas City, Mo where she grew up. Later, she moved to Fort Scott and since 1923, had lived in El Dorado.

She was married to Edward Lee Epperson who died in 1966. She was a member of the Church of God in Christ where she was the Mother of the church.

She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Claudia Robnett, El Dorado, one grandson, and five great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and a great grandson. (El Dorado Times, 1980)

ERDWIEN, CLYDE E.

Services for Clyde E. Erdwien, 80, 220 N. Washington will be held Monday, 10:00 a.m. at Dietz-Carlson Colonial Chapel. Interment will follow in Walnut Valley Memorial park. Mr. Erdwien died Friday at Allen Memorial Hospital.

He was born July 10, 1900 at Greenwich, Kansas, the son of E. O. and Minnie Kramer Erdwien. He had lived in El Dorado for the past 63 years, and was a clerk for the Missouri Pacific Railroad until retiring in 1965.

On April 21, 1922, he was married to Erma Loftin, in El Dorado. She survives.

Survivors also include a daughter in law, Frances Erdwien, El Dorado, a sister, Mrs. Elsie Howard, Wichita, and four grandchildren, Mary Pierce, Park City, Virginia Jones, Lawrence, Neil C. Erdwien and Barbara Erdwien, both of El Dorado.

EVILSIZOR, HERSHEL G.

Hershel G. Evilsizor, 70, died July 8 at Kansas University Medical Center.

He was born March 26, 1910 in Red Key, Jay County, Ind., the son of Edward and Flora Evilsizor. In 1915 he moved to El Dorado with his parents. He attended school here.

On Oct. 2, 1931, he married Valva Brooks, then left El Dorado to work in various states, Australia and Cuba. He returned to the El Dorado area often for visits.

He is survived by his wife, Valva; two sons, Lawrence and David; one daughter, Maxine Loewenstein, six grandsons, four granddaughters and one great grandson. (El Dorado Times, July 19, 1980)

EWING, ELEANOR AIKMAN (MRS. ROGER W.)

Rites for Mrs. Roger W. Ewing (Eleanor Aikman) whose death occurred Saturday, December 18, in the Northwest Community Hospital at Arlington Heights, Ill., were held Tuesday at the Kirby Funeral Home. The Rev. Randolph Coney, minister of the First United Presbyterian church officiated. A medley of organ selections were played by Mrs. H. W. Bullerdiek.

The casket bearers were Robert Sandifer of Wichita; Rev. Irvin Grant, Mac Childs, William Sluss, Ewing Teter and Murle Teter. Luther N. Tolle was an honorary bearer. Interment was in Belle Vista cemetery.

A daughter of the late Judge and Mrs. Granville P. Aikman, Mrs. Ewing was born in El Dorado November 29, 1893, and was married to Roger W. Ewing February 22, 1917. Until seven years ago the home was in El Dorado. Mrs. Ewing's memberships included the First Presbyterian church, Susannah French Putney chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, the E. M. B. and senior W. M. B. clubs.

Surviving are two daughters, Miss Dorothy Ewing of Oak Park, Ill., and Mrs. George Short (Caroline) of Arlington heights, three grandchildren two great grandchildren.

HALL-SHELL, ROBERTA

Roberta Hall-Shell, 79, formerly of Leon, died on Thursday, May 10, 2007.

Service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 15, at Carlson Funeral Home in El Dorado. Interment will be in the Leon Cemetery.

She was born on Dec. 26, 1927 in Atlanta, Kan., the daughter of James and Naomi Ballinger Bloom. She graduated from Leon High School in 1945 and lived her entire life in this area. In 1946 she married Lloyd Hall and he preceded her in death in 1988. She later married John Shell in 1989 and he died in 1996. She was a member of Leon Christian Church.

Her survivors include: sons, Jim Hall of Augusta, Mike Hall of Ottawa, LeRoy Hall of Augusta, and Brad Hall of El Dorado; four step-children; brother, Everett Bloom of Douglass; sisters, Treva Bogart of Newton, Loretta Britt of Atlanta, and Lila Whiteside of El Dorado; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

HAMILTON, JEANNETTE AUSTIN KING

Jeannette Austin King Hamilton, 95, died Sunday, Sept. 2, 2007 at Halstead Place Assisted Living in Halstead.

Services will be held 2 p.m. Friday at the Kirby-Morris Funeral Home in El Dorado.

Jeannette was the only child of Clyde Burrough King and Bessie Fern Austin and she was born Dec. 11, 1911 on a farm one and one half miles south of El Dorado close to now Highway 77. The Kings moved to El Dorado when Jeannette was in the third grade, and she graduated from El Dorado High School in 1929. She then attended Stephens College, Columbia, Mo., and she graduated from Kansas University in 1934. She briefly worked as a social worker with the Cowley County Welfare Department. On Oct. 31, 1937 she was united in marriage to Robert Franks Hamilton in Arkansas City. The lived in Western Kansas until 1939 when the moved to El Dorado. Mr. Hamilton became the director of the Butler County Welfare Department in 1939 and remained in that position until his retirement in 1974. Jeannette lived with her family at 329 N. High in El Dorado for 52 years.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church., the W.M.B Club, D.A.R. and an Alzheimers Support Group. She loved to play bridge and watch K.U. Basketball.

Surviving family include one son, Austin F. Hamilton and his wife Linda, Halstead; grandchildren, A. Wade Hamilton and wife Sabrina of Las Vegas, Nevada, Louis C. Hamilton and wife Angelique of Las Vegas, Jeffrey F. Hamilton and wife Rachel of Los Angeles, Jennie A. Hamilton of Murfreesboro, Tenn., Robert Hamilton of Denver, Colo., Christopher B. Hamilton and wife Julie of Becida, Minn.; and great-grandchildren Lucas, Annette, David, Jane, Hannah and Nolan.

She was preceded in death by her husband Robert of 63 years in 2000 and one son, Robert King Hamilton in 2002

HOSS, MARY A.

Mary A. Hoss, 91, of Potwin, died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2007

Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Potwin United Methodist Church. Visitation with the family will be from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday at Carlson Funeral Home, El Dorado. Interment will follow the funeral service in McGill Cemetery in Potwin.

She was born Jan. 6, 1916 at Sun City in Barber County, the daughter of Arthur and Flora (Kaminska) Humeston. She was a busy homemaker living on the farm. She had spent the last year in Lenexa, living with her daughter. She was an active member of the Potwin United Methodist Church, always doing whatever needed to be done.

In her early years, she was a member of the Farm Bureau.

In March 1941, she and Floyd J. Hoss were united in marriage in Potwin. He preceded her in death on Aug. 9, 1987.

Mary was a loving and kind friend, mother and grandmother and will be greatly missed by all.

Survivors include: three sons, Paul Hoss of Pampa, Texas, Keith Hoss and wife Mary Lou of Floyda Knobs, Ind., and Neal Hoss and wife Susan of Layton, Utah; a daughter and her husband, Fern and Gary Aron of Lenexa; one sister, Lucille McKnight of Lubbock, Texas; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by her parents and an older sister, Edna.

JACK, GENEVA MAE

Geneva Mae Jack, 93, El Dorado, died on Wednesday, May 16, 2007.

Service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 19, at Carlson Funeral Home in El Dorado. Interment will follow in the Leon Cemetery.

She was born on Dec. 18, 1913 in Castleton. She graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1932 and married John Henry Jack on June 23, 1940. She was a homemaker and also helped prepare food at the Haverhill Grade School. She lived in the Augusta area for many years.

Those she leaves are: four sons, Lyle (Liz) of El Dorado, Dale of Leon, Joe (Laura), and Loren (Kathy), of El Dorado; two daughters, Carol (Keith) McDowell of Bartlesville, Okla., Judy (Gary) Trecek of Topeka; sister, Opal McQuilliam of Lyons; 21 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

LITCHFIELD, VICTOR

Victor Litchfield, 78, of El Dorado, died at his home Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2007.

A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church.

Victor was born March 5, 1929 at Emporia, the son of Craton and Lucile (VanVoris) Litchfield.

Victor grew up in the Emporia area and graduated from Emporia High School. He then joined the Navy and served during the Korean War. After the Navy, he attended Emporia State College. He was a retired electrician at Cessna. He was united in marriage to Joyce Wilber on Nov. 27, 1953 at the Methodist Church in Burns. He loved model trains, build miniature houses, collect tools and mowed the neighbors' yards. Victor belonged to the VFW and American Legion.

Surviving family include: his son, Steve Litchfield of El Dorado; daughters, Vickie and her husband Dave Wiggins of El Dorado, Kay and husband Mark Tibbs of Wellington, Cami Litchfield of Overland Park and Valerie Litchfield of the home; brothers, Meredith Litchfield of Manhattan, and Bill Litchfield of Holly Lake Ranch, Texas; sister, Ethel Grimwood of Emporia; grandchildren, Dustin Litchfield, Trilby "T.J." Wiggins, Jordan Tibbs and Donovan Tibbs.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce; parents; and a sister, Helen.

McDANIEL, JEANETTE E.

Jeanette Elizabeth McDaniel, 68, Augusta, retired high school English teacher, died Wednesday, May 9, 2007, at Via Christi St. Joseph Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 19, 2007, at Headley Funeral Chapel, Augusta. Friends are invited to visit and reminisce together for a light lunch service at United Methodist Church, 2024 Ohio following the services.

She was born on Nov. 4, 1938 in Comanche, Okla., the only child of Woody and Lillian McDaniel. Both have preceded her in death.

Jeanette grew up and was educated in Oklahoma. She attended El Reno Junior College and Southwestern State College at Weatherford, Okla. from which she obtained a BA degree. Additional work was done at Kansas State Teachers College. Moving to Kansas in 1961, Jeanette taught high school for 38 years. Seven years in Conway Springs, where she met Vesta Wicke who became a friend for life, and 31 years at Augusta High School where she taught English, Debate, Forensics, Speech and Drama.

"Mac", as her students and friends referred to her, was a member of Eastern Star, Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities in 1960 and Who's Who Among High School Teachers in 1998. Throughout the years, she has touched many lives through her teaching. Her students' left her classroom with life long writing skills and have become teachers, lawyers, doctors, housewives, nurses, physicists and numerous other careers.

Although Jeanette never had children of her own, her students were her family. She kept in touch through the years with many of her students with cards and words of wisdom. From 1970-1988 Mac produced 39 plays at Augusta High School. They ranged from musicals to serious dramas.

She is survived by many close friends: Mike, Kristen, Megan, Madelyn Martin, Vesta Wicke, Mary Knebler, all of Augusta, and Pam Hill, Wichita, Anna Lea and Freddy McCord of Comanche, Okla., Dixie and C.L. Cooksey of Orange Park, Fla., and Irene McFarland of Issaquah, Wash.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in her honor; Jeanette McDaniel Scholarship Fund for Debate, Drama, English, Forensics and Speech, Augusta High School, 2020 Ohio, Augusta, 67010.

MINAHAN, CHRISTIAN MICHAEL

Christian Michael Minahan, age 14, 9th grade student at Douglass High School, died Wednesday, May 23, 2007 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Hilyard-Smith Funeral Home, 507 S. Maple, Douglass will be open to receive flowers until 5 p.m. this evening. Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, at the Douglass High School Auditorium, 910 East 1st St. (Hwy 77 and 1st st.). Cremation will take effect following the services.

Christian was born Aug. 23, 1992 in Wichita, the son of Michael and Rebecca (Lowmaster) Minahan. He was a member of Rose Hill Friends Church. Christian enjoyed playing basketball, football, track, skateboarding, swimming and playing PlayStation2.

His survivors include: parents; sister, Lakin Minahan, of the home; grandparents, Beverly Williams, Douglass, Emmie Wilson, Park City, Harry Minahan, Chicago, Ill.; great-grandparents, Florence Minahan, Chicago, Ill., Sharon Spangler, Douglass; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Christian was preceded in death by his twin brother, Andrew Bryce Minahan; grandparents, Clarence Lowmaster, Sr., great-grandparents, Eileen Spangler, Harold Spangler, Sr., Harry Minahan, Sr., Leo and Donna Miner, Roy and Vera Lowmaster.

OLMSTEAD, SIDNEY RICHARD

Sidney Richard "Dick" Olmstead, 83, Augusta, retired Texaco employee, passed away on Saturday, June 9, 2007.

Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 13, at Headley Funeral Chapel, Augusta. Burial will be at the Douglass Cemetery.

Sidney Richard "Dick" Olmstead was born on June 13, 1924 at Tonkawa, Okla., to Sidney and Amelia Glaves Olmstead. His parents were both reared in the Douglass area and returned to Kansas when Dick was a year old to be near relatives when his mother became seriously ill. She passed away when Dick was three years old.

When Dick was six, his father married Virginia Woodson and she became Dick's second mother. Dick was raised in Rose Hill. He attended 11 years of school in Rose Hill and his senior year at Douglass High School, where he graduated. During World War II, he volunteered in the U.S. Navy, spending three years in the Armed Guard branch. He was discharged in Oct. 1945.

While on leave from the Navy, he married Roxie Frans on May 2, 1944 in Wichita. Four children were born to this union.

After the war he was employed by Texaco Inc. for 35 years until ill health forced early retirement. He was an oil pumper and lived in Russell, Hill City, Ellis, and Beaver, Okla. After retirement, he moved to Augusta in 1983, where he resided until his death.

Dick became a Christian as a child and was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church in Augusta at the time of his death.

He leaves to mourn: his wife, Roxie; a daughter and son-in-law, Tom and Sherry Nelson of Sheridan, Wyo.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Paul and Susie Olmstead of Canyon Lake, Calif., and Mark and Sharon Olmstead of Westminster, Colo.; eight grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; his second mother, Virginia Olmstead of Douglass; two sisters, Virginia Duryea and Margie Valentine of Douglass; other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by a son, David Richard; great-grandson, Conner Michael Cleary; and brother, Bob Olmstead.

OHMART, IVA LOUISE

Iva Louise (Hopper) Ohmart, 87, Augusta, homemaker, passed away on Sunday, May 6, 2007.

Visitation from 10 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, May 9, at Dunsford-Zeiner Funeral Home, followed by graveside service at 1 p.m. at Elmwood Cemetery, both in Augusta.

She was born on Oct. 11, 1919 in Fredonia to Claude and Euphrates (Baker) Peese.

Her survivors include; sons, Wesley D. (Pat) Houser, Elizabethtown, Ky. and David Ohmart of Topeka; daughters, Rosemary Eveland and Bonnie Davenport, both of Wichita, Donna (Glenard) Harris of Mulvane; 17 grandchildren; several great and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and daughters, Barbara and Shirle Houser.

OWENS, MARY EMMA

Mrs. Mary Emma Owens, 51, of Route 1, a resident of the El Dorado community all of her life, died at Allen Memorial Hospital, Tuesday night. The daughter of Joseph Edward Marcum and Eliza E. Scott Marcum, now deceased, Mrs. Owens was born at El Dorado on Oct. 22, 1913. She was married to John R. Owens at Spokane, Wash., in 1948. Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. James McQueen, Route 1, and Mrs. Paul Juelfs of Wichita, three brothers, Joe Marcum, 1709 West Central and Eldon Marcum and Elwirt Marcum, both of Route 1. Funeral rites will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. at Dunsford Funeral Home at Augusta. Interment will be at Elmwood cemetery. (El Dorado Times, May 26, 1965)

PARRISH, NEAL

Neal Parrish, 75, of Augusta, passed away on Monday, May 28, 2007, at MD Anderson Medical Center in Houston, Texas, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

There will be no viewing and a private burial service will be held. A memorial service will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday, June 2, 2007, at the First United Methodist Church, Augusta.

Neal was born in Chetopa, Kan. on Sept. 19, 1931, the son of the late Walter L. and Ida Jane (Elliott) Parrish. Neal spent his early years helping with the family farm and going to a one-room country school house outside of Welch, Okla. His family moved to a farm outside of Arcadia, Kan., where Neal attended class and graduated from Arcadia High School in 1949.

On May 24, 1954 Neal married Dena Verlee Harris in Arcadia. He began working for the Western Insurance Company in Fort Scott. He would continue to work for the company through the mid 1960's in various capacities in Fort Scott, Lyons, and Augusta.

Neal began a long career as an Augusta businessman in the late 1960's when he became manager of Prairie State Insurance. Later, he would start his own insurance, home loan, and real estate business; Neal Parrish and Associates. In the early 1990's Neal sold this business and was then elected to two terms as Butler County Commissioner and one term as Butler County Treasurer.

Neal was a member of First United Methodist Church of Augusta, Midian Shrine, KCCH Scottish Rite, and the Augusta Country Club. He was a past president of Augusta Lions Club, Augusta Chamber of Commerce and the Augusta Country Club. He was an avid golfer who loved people and in turn was well known and loved by those who came in contact with him at the country club.

Neal is survived by his wife of 53 years, Dena Verlee; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ben and Kathy of Augusta and Barry and Robin of Wichita; five grandchildren, Natalie Parrish, Matthew Parrish, Sarah Ward and her husband Sean, Isaiah Johnson, and Nicholas Tate; one great-grandson, Noah Cooper Ward. He is also survived by his brother, John of Pittsburg, Kan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Frank and a sister, Ruth Eggen.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like to respectfully request that any donations be made to Augusta Junior Golf at the Augusta Country Club.

Morris Peterson, 69, Douglass retired Cennsa foreman, died on Tuesday, June 12, 2007.

Visitation from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, June 15, at Hilyard-Smith Funeral Home in Douglass. Funeral service at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 16, at the Douglass First Baptist Church.

Morris was born on April 23, 1938, the son of Theodore and Dulcie (Laham) Peterson.

He is survived by: wife of 51 years, Shirlene Peterson; daughters, Debbie (Don) Logsdon, all of Douglass, Lisa Huffman of Augusta; grandchildren, Nikki Randall, James Morris Logsdon, Lucy Logsdon, Nathan Huffman, and Levi Huffman; great-grandson, Brody Randall; siblings, Ed (Jean) Ash, Evelyn (Gene) Leedy, and Maxine (Lloyd) Latimer; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Vernon and Bob Peterson.

Ed Pierce, 59, Augusta, passed away on Wednesday, May 16, 2007.

Viewing will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday, May 20, with family to greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m., at Headley Funeral Chapel, Augusta. Service at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 21, at Christ Lutheran Church in Augusta. Burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery, Augusta.

Ed was born in Winfield on July 23, 1947, the son of Carl E. and Velma June (Brunner) Pierce. He served in the United States Air Force during Vietnam and owned and operated B.J. Kwik Tote, as well as Northstar Kwik Tote.

On April 28, 1973, he married Jeanne Reynolds in Augusta. She survives as well as his children; daughters, Jennifer Pittman and husband, Tom, Cindy Pierce and fiance' John DeFore; son, Kevin Pierce; mother, June Winger and husband, Bill of Shell Knob, Mo.; brothers, Roger Pierce and wife, Kristie, and Ron Pierce and wife, Mary Beth; sisters, Jackie Pierce, all of Augusta, Sharon Barlow and husband, Bill of Shell Knob, Mo.; grandchildren, Tommy, Bren and Canon Pittman.

Virginia H. Ray, 92, Augusta, homemaker, passed away on Thursday, June 28, 2007.

Viewing from 4 to 7 p.m. today and service at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 30, 2007, both at Headley Funeral Chapel, Augusta. Burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery, Augusta.

Virginia was born in Knox, Pa. on July 13, 1914, the daughter of the late Ira and May (Wilder) Wentling. On June 4, 1937 she married Clarence Ray in Augusta. He preceded her in death.

ROSINE, JEFFERY DOUGLAS

Jeffery Douglas Rosine, of Peabody, an employee at Reliance Energy, died Friday, Aug. 31, 2007 at his home.

Services were held at 10 a.m. today at Peabody United Methodist Church, with Rev. David Ragland and Pastor Jim Pohlman officiating. Interment was at Prairie Lawn Cemetery in Peabody.

He was born May 24, 1961 at Newton, the son of Don and Beverly Rosine.

Survivors include: his fiancee, Liz Cashner of Peabody; his parents, Don and Cheryl Rosine of Peabody and Beverly Rosine of Newton; three daughters, Jackie and Conroy Miller of Burns, Jessica Rosine of Peabody and Sabrina Cashner of Peabody; brothers, Randy and Janet Rosine of Duncan, Okla., Jim and Chris Philpott of Peabody, Aaron and Sarah Waddell of Marion and Andy Rosine of Wichita; sister, Amy and Randy Halcomb of Hurst, Texas; and one grandchild, Barrett "Bubba" Wayne Miller.

STEVENS, CHRISTIAN W.

Christian W. Stevens, 38, Potwin, died on Friday, June 15, 2007.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 23, at Carlson Funeral Home in El Dorado. Interment will follow the service in Sunset Lawn Cemetery, El Dorado.

He was born on June 28, 1968 in El Dorado, the son of Dick and Maybelle (Frye) Stevens. He graduated from Bluestem High School in Leon and had lived in Potwin for the past 16 years. He did maintenance work and had many hobbies, including woodworking, drawing, writing poems, weight lifting, attending car shows, monster trucks, collecting stamps, watching movies and wrestling.

Those he leaves are: his parents, Dick and Maybelle "May" Stevens of Potwin; sister, Monica Huntzinger and her husband, Lloyd of Potwin; brother, Jesse Stevens and wife, Brynnn of Potwin; sons, Zion Stevens of Augusta and Noah Stevens of Wichita; brother, Jason Roeder and wife, Danielle of Augusta; sisters, Marta Lawson and husband, Gary of Wichita, and Amanda Roeder, also of Wichita; step-mother, Pearl Roeder of Augusta; nieces and nephews, Elysa Patterson of Whitewater, Allyson Holton, David Holton, Michael Huntzinger, all of Potwin, Jeff Huntzinger of El Dorado, Brian Huntzsinger of Wamego, Kelsi Lawson, Brayden Lawson, Alexis Roeder, Victoria Roeder, and Phoenix Roeder, all of Wichita.

TURNER, ALEXANDER

Escanaba, Mich., Nov. 22 - Alexander Turner, 74 years of age, died in great agony near here as a result of using arsenic by mistake for baking powder in making biscuits. Turner and a young man were living in bachelor quarters in the woods a few miles from here. In preparing a meal they made a mistake and used arsenic instead of baking powder. They tried to save themselves by drinking coffee. The younger man fought death for several hours, when he was able to drag himself to the nearest settlement for medical attention. ULREY, DARLENE DAWN

Darlene Dawn Ulrey, 72, Augusta, Securitas Company security guard for Frontier Refinery in El Dorado, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 27, 2007.

Memorial service at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 30, at Dunsford-Zeiner Funeral Home, Augusta.

She was born on Jan. 7, 1935 in Portland, Ore. to Darryl and Lillian Cork. They precede her. Darlene enjoyed meeting new people, knitting, gardening, flowers, traveling, over-the-road trucking, and the El Dorado Correctional Facilities Prison Ministry. Survivors are: spouse Charles Ulrey of the home; son, Frank (Sharon) McKinnis, Roundup, Mont.; daughters, Marlene Issacson and Linda Graham both of Hermiston, Ore., step-sons Francis Ulrey, Stillwater, Okla., Charles Ulrey, Inman; step-daughters, Cheryl Cunningham and Michelle Hoefer both of Hutchinson; many grand and great-grandchildren.
