Influenza Claims Another Person
The influenza epidemic claimed its eighth victim locally when it took the life of Ora Lee Essex, age 42 years, at 12:45 o'clock this morning at his home, 929 North Walnut Street, following an extended illness of the past two years. The flu weakened him and he suffered a heart attack from which he did not recover.
Mr. Essex was born here in 1886 and had lived here all his life working in and about El Dorado. Except for the past two years, Mr. Essex had always been in good health.
Mr. Essex is survived by his wife, and six children: Cleo Cartwright, Towanda, Robert Essex, age 14 years; Herbert, 10; edward 6, Lloyd 3, and Russell Abraham, 14 months; all of El Dorado. No funeral services have been made. The Byrd Brothers Funeral Home has charge of the body. (El Dorado Times, December 27, 1928)
Robert L. Essex, 72, of Longton, died Thursday afternoon Marhc 19, 1987, at the Wichita Veterans Hospital. Services will be Saturday, 2 p.m. at the Thayer Cemetery. Burial will follow services.
He was born June 24, 1914 at El dorado the son of Ora Lee and Bertha E. Duncan Essex. He had lived in Longton for the past five years, lving in Humboldt and Cody, Wyo., previously. He retired as a welder in 1980.
He as a Baptist and a Master Mason, a member of the Cody, Wyo., lodge. He was also a member of the VFW. During World War II, he served in the Army Air Corp.
His wife, Sophia, died in 1966.
Survivors include three brothers, Herbert L. Essex, of Escondido, Calif., Lloyd E. Essex of Springdale, Wash., Russell A.Essex of El Dorado, a sister, Cleo Cartwright of Burns, several nephews and nieces.

Evelyn Rebecca Eytcheson, 86, died Thursday, March 25, 1999 at Lakepoint Nursing Center in Augusta.
A graveside service at Elmwood Cemetery will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 27, 1999.
Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 27, 1999 at Dunsford Funeral Home of Augusta.
She was born on March 18, 1913 in Bartlesville, Okla., to Thomas Eades and Leona May.
Mrs. Eytcheson was a homemaker. She was a member of First Christian Church.
She is survived by husband, John Riley Eytcheson, whom she married on Dec. 14, 1930.
Mrs. Eytcheson also leaves a son, Marvin Eytcheson of Augusta; daughters, Wanda M. Catron of Cherryvale, Barbara J. Harvey of Augusta, and Caroline Powers of Kincaid; a brother, Raymond Eades of Independence; sisters, Dollie Bonney of Las Vegas, Nev., Edith Sheppard of Montana and Alice Sheppard, address unknown; 12 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

John Riley Eytcheson, 94, Augusta, retired City Service Natural Gas Company welder, died on Friday, July 14, 2006.
Graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 18, at Elmwood Cemetery in Augusta. Those attending should use the 12th Street entrance to the cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, July 17, at Dunsford-Zeiner Funeral Home, Augusta.
He was born on Oct. 23, 1911 in Wagoner, Okla., the son of Benjamin and Mary Florence (Dobson) Eytcheson. He married Evelyn Rebecca Eades on Dec. 14, 1930. She preceded him in death in March 1999.
His survivors include: son, Marvin Eytcheson of Augusta; daughters, Wanda Catron of Cherryvale, Barbara Harvey of Augusta, and Carolyn Powers of Kincaid; sister, Beulah Osborn of Independence; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.
Memorial donations may be made to the Augusta First Christian Church and Lakepoint Nursing Center.

Cora Eubank, 97, of Newton, a homemaker, died Thursday, May 21, 1987. Service will be 2 p.m. today, at Wichita Park Cemetery in Wichita.
Survivors include son, Paul E., of Denver, daughters, Doris Fewin of Odessa, Texas; Ruth Rurrows of Columbus, Helen Newfelt of Whitewater, 20 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren, 12 great-great-grandchildren. Harry Eustice, 67, of Neodesha, retired meat cutter and father of Harry Lee Eustice of El Dorado died Saturday Dec. 26,1987. Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday, Fredonia Cemetery.
Survivors include wife, Helen, son Harry Lee of El Dorado, stepson, Bob Armstrong of Coffeyville, daughters, Phyllis Harder, Vickie Tucker, both of Independence, stepdaughters, Carolyn McGinnis of Coffeyville, Pat Holt of Wichita, Marilyn Ingle of Chanute; brother, raymond of Dodge City, sisters, Wilma Achenbacher, genevieve Nightingale, Lucille Yoder, all of Concordia; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren, 11 step grandchildren. Bertha Evans, 90, a resident of Golden Keys Nursing Home in Neodosha and a former El Dorado resident, died Tuesday, Aug. 25, 1987 at the Wilson County Hospital. Graveside services were held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28 at the Grant Township Cemetery near Marion, with Pastor Ronald Williams presiding.
She was born Sept. 1, 1896 in everton, Mo., the daughter of Adolph Rogers at Toronto Dec. 6, 1914. he preceded her in death. On Feb. 10, 1951 she was married to Sam Evans. He preceded her in death in 1956.
She moved to Neodesha from El Dorado in 1956. She was employed as a licensed practical nurse at the Wilson County Hospital until 1965.
She was a member of the Lutheran Church in El Dorado.
Survivors include a son, William A. Rogers of Neodesha, and three grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husbands, her parents, two daughters, two sisters and three brothers.

Blanche Agnes Magers, 101, of Augusta, homemaker, died Wednesday, March 3, 1999.
Services will be Saturday, March 6, 1999 at 10:30 a.m. in the Dunsford Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Vern Bowers will preside. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery, Augusta.
She was born in Goodrich, Ks., to Clarence and Gertrue (Pomeroy) Byerly.
She married Ralph Magers Sept. 18, 1918 in Mound City, Ks. He preceded her in death in June 1961.
Her son, Keith, also preceded her in death.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church.
Survivors include: daughter, Madlyn Boucher of Augusta, Kay Andrews of Wilmington, N.C.; grandchildren Kim Andrews of Bronxville, N.Y., Mike Andrews of Laurel, Va., Kathy Helmer of Augusta; sister-in-law Jennie Byerly of Great Bend; and nine grandchildren.

Rosalie Powers, 86, Augusta, homemaker, passed away on Monday, July 17, 2006.
Viewing will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, and funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 20, both at Headley Funeral Chapel in Augusta. Burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery, Augusta.
Mrs. Powers was born on Nov. 25, 1919 in Augusta. She was the daughter of Tom and Una M. (Patterson) Taylor. On Dec. 5, 1935 she married C.W. "Doc" Powers in El Dorado. He preceded her in death. A daughter, Barbara Bower, two brothers and four sisters preceded her in death as well.
She is survived by: son, Troy Powers and his wife, Judie of Augusta; sisters, Ella Bell Miller of Augusta and Helen Auernheimer of Goessel; grandchildren, Mike Powers and his wife, Annette, Steve Powers and his wife, Fran, and Joyce Provencher-LaMar and her husband, Mike; nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Memorials may go to Augusta First Baptist Church.

James L. "Jimmy" Sample, 59, Andover, passed away on Monday, July 24, 2006.
Viewing will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, with family to greet friends from 3 to 5 p.m. both days; funeral service at 10 a.m. on Monday, all at Headley Funeral Chapel in Augusta. Burial will be at the Severy Cemetery, Severy.
James was born in Wichita on March 29, 1947, the son of Gordon R. and Arvetta (Condit) Sample. He worked as a machinist at B&B Machine, Machining Specialists and C&L Machine. He had been former owner of Sample Service Station in Rose Hill and B&S Truck Stop in Augusta. On July 31, 1970, he married Linda Wilson. She survives.
Other survivors include: sons, Donald Sample and his wife, Leslie of North Pole, Alaska, and Michael Sample and his wife, Tina of Wichita; daughter, Tina Laymon and her husband, Chuck of Augusta; sister, Joyce Fox of Inner City, Minn.; grandchildren, Mikki, Denise, Caleb, Casey, Whitley, Anthony, Christian, Brenden, Kamren; great-grandchild, Cassie.

SCHREIBER, LAWRENCE E. "LARRY"
Lawrence E. "Larry" Schreiber, 59, Augusta, retired delivery service supervisor at the Augusta Post Office, went home to be with his Lord, on Wednesday, July 12, 2006.
Memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 16, at Central Christian Church Worship Center, 2900 N. Rock Rd., Wichita.
Larry was born in Hammond, Ind. on Sept. 26, 1946. He was the son of Clarence and Dorothy (Gehrke) Schreiber. On Aug. 12, 1967, he married Melody Garmon in Hammond. She survives.
Other survivors include: son, Derrick Schreiber and his wife, Rikki of Derby; daughter, Kelley Allen of Augusta; his mother, Dorothy Schreiber of Albuquqerque, N.M.; brothers, John Schreiber of Albuquerque and Emil Schreiber of Andover; sister, Virginia Dery of Johannesburg, South Africa; grandchildren, Ryan, Ali, Jake, Bryce Schreiber and Jack Allen.
Memorials in lieu of flowers may go to the American Cancer Society or to Hospice Care of Kansas.
