Augustan is Crash Victim
Mrs. Marjorie Hammond Killed; Four Injured
Death stalked a county road intersection four miles south of Towanda Saturday, Mrs. Marjorie K. Hammond, 37, one of five victims of a car truck crash, died minutes after arrival at Allen Memorial Hospital in El Dorado.
Mrs. Hammond, Route 1, Augusta, Butler County's fifth traffic fatality of 1965. A car she was driving and a pickup truck, driven by Lloyd Smith, 58, also of Route 1, Augusta, collided at the intersection of Towanda's Sixth Street Road and the East Twenty-Ninth Street Road.
Mrs. Hammond's right leg had been severed at the hip.
The accident occurred at about 6 p.m. Investigating officers said there are no stop signs at the intersection. The east-west road was once controlled by stop signs, they added.
Smith suffered a concussion and other injuries.
Also injured were Mrs. Hammond's daughters, Judy Ann 15, and Kathy Sue 9, and Elaine Copp 15, all passengers in the Hammond auto.
Smith and Kathy Sue Hammond were admitted to the hospital here. Judy Hammond and Miss Copp were treated and released.
The accident victims were rushed to the hospital in three ambulances, two from El Dorado and one from Augusta. The ambulances streamed down the winding, narrow and hilly Sixth street road through Towanda and then to El Dorado.
The north-south road connects with Towanda's Sixth street and the Twenty-nineth Street road, an east-west route, eventually connects with a Wichita street by the same name.
Exact cause of the fatal crash is not known, according to State Trooper Charles Hanna of the Kansas Highway Patrol, Augusta. Hanna who investigated with the assistance of Butler County sheriff's officers and off duty Augusta police, said Mrs. Hammond was southbound and Smith was traveling west. The truck ripped into the driver's side of the car.
Mrs. Hammond was thrown from her vehicle, which struck a telephone pole before plowing into a muddy ditch. The pole was broken near the top, when wires held it in place. The truck ended up in a farm field.
The Hammond car was demolished and the truck received sufficient damage to be listed as "total."
Hanna said investigation of the crash is continuing.
The fatality was the first since March 30 when Oliver U. Hulsebus, 72, of Columbus, Kan., died en route to the hospital after he was injured in a one car crash near Beaumont on K-96. (El Dorado Times, April 26,1965)
