ALLEY, RICHARD "DICK" SCOTT, SR.
Alley, Richard "Dick" Scott, Sr., passed away in San Antonio, Texas, on June 14, 2006 at the age of 79. He was born to James Maston Alley and Nan Johnson Alley in Augusta, Kansas.
At the height of World War II, following graduation from high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as radioman on a submarine chaser in the Pacific Fleet. At the end of the war he married Marcia Jean Godding of El Dorado, Kansas. Upon graduation from college and dental school at the University of Missouri in Kansas City, Dick moved his family to Wichita, Kansas, where he practiced oral surgery for 18 years. In the 1960s his love (aside from his family) was racing sports cars, and for several years participated in -and won -many races throughout the U.S. By the early 1970s his love for the sea called him back, and in spite of what 'people might say' he and Marcia decided to move on. He sold his oral surgery practice in Kansas, they bought a 36' cutter-rig sailboat in the Virgin Islands and sailed it to Europe, where they lived and completely enjoyed themselves. They never looked back.
In the mid-1970s they moved to San Antonio where Dick began a second career as professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. During his tenure, he and Marcia still sailed and after retiring in 1992, they sailed across the Gulf of Mexico and up the east coast to the Chesapeake Bay. After retirement, he became a volunteer for the National Park Service, giving lectured tours through the old San Antonio missions. Between open-sea sailing, world travels, lecturing at the missions, and taking an active role in his homeowners association, he managed to make the rounds to visit all the family quite often. If a single statement could summarize his life, maybe it would be that Dick Alley knew how to get the most out of life, and did not waste a single moment.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marcia; son, Richard Scott Alley, Jr. and his wife Melly of Houston; daughter, Lecia Nan Alley Dorfler and her husband Joseph, and their children Kathleen, Joseph IV, and Kristin, of Fairfax Station, Virginia.
A memorial service will he held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, June 20, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 6800 Wurzbach Road, San Antonio. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to the National Museum of the Pacific War in Fredericksburg, TX or to any other charity of choice.
