BALCH, STELLA

Graveside services for Mrs. Stella Edith Balch, 92, 917 West Locust who died Wednesday April 4, at Knutson Manor were held April 6 at Belle Vista cemetery. Rev. Donald McCracken, pastor of the First Baptist Church officiated. Kirby Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Balch, was born December 27, 1880 in El Dorado and was a life long resident. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Fowler (Martha). She was married to Roy Balch on October 25, 1908 in El Dorado. She was a member of the Church of Christ.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Beth Hall, El Dorado, six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, a son, a sister, and a brother. (El Dorado Times, April 12, 1973)

BERG, GEORGE MARION

George Marion Berg, 75, Ottawa, died Tuesday at the ransom Memorial Hospital, Ottawa.

Survivors include his wife, Julia of the home; one son, George Jr., Olathe two daughters, Mrs. Floyd Blakesley and Mrs. Jim Powell, both of Ottawa, a brother, Grant, St. Ansgar, Iowa, six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by five brothers and one sister.

Berg was born in Chelsea on March 23, 1898. He was a resident of El Dorado until 1941, when he moved to Chicago. He moved again to Ottawa in 1945 and resided there for the rest of his life.

Arrangements are being made by the Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home, Ottawa, where the services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 25. Burial will be at the Highland Cemetery, Ottawa. (El Dorado Times, May 24, 1973)

BISHOP, OLIVER H.

Funeral services for Oliver H. Bishop, 78, 1235 Ford, who died Friday, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Dietz Colonial Chapel. Burial will be in the Chelsea Cemetery.

Born in Osceola, Mo., he came to El Dorado in 1907 with his parents from Oklahoma. He married Hazel Garabrandt December 19, 1923 at Eureka. They made their home in Cassoday for 16 years before moving back to El Dorado.

Survivors include his wife, Hazel, of the home, one son, Oliver Richard Bishop, Slater, Mo.; two daughters, Mrs. John Davenport, 1250 S. Summit and Mrs. R. K. Love, 1418 Sunset road and six grandchildren.

His parents, one brother, two sisters and an infant son are dead. (El Dorado Times, October 16, 1971)

BISHOP, PRISCILLA

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday at the Kirby Funeral Home chapel for Priscilla Bishop, 77, 624 West Carr, who died at her home Friday morning. Interment will follow at Sunset Lawns cemetery.

Born May 11, 1895, at Rockville, Mo., she married Edwin E. Bishop on Nov. 25, 1913 at Osceola, Mo. She had been a resident of El Dorado since 1916. She was a member of the Baptist church.

Survivors include two sons, Norman F., also of 624 West Carr, and Robert E. of Wellington; two sisters, Mrs. Tom Owen of New York City and Mrs. Roy Cook, 713 South Star. Two brothers also survive. They are Lester Jones of 315 North Star and Claud Jones, 1201 South Summitt. Two grandchildren also survive.

Her husband, one sister, and two brothers preceded her in death.

BLACK, DAVID H.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Kirby Funeral Home Chapel for David Harrison Black, 87, 505 Towanda avenue, who died Monday at Allen Memorial Hospital. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Maplewood cemetery at Emporia.

Born Oct. 8, 1885, at Admire, Kan., he married the former Eva L. Sloyer on Feb. 11, 1915. She died in 1966. Mr. Black was a retired employee of the Cities Service Oil Co., where he worked in oil production for 37 years until his retirement in 1955.

He was a member of the El Dorado Elks Lodge, the Towanda Masonic Lodge 30, A. F. & A. M. and the Cities Service Retirement Club.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Fred (Verna Lee) Andrus, 701 Towanda Avenue, two sisters, Mrs. Harry Echols of Topeka and Mrs. William Jones of Madison, Kan., two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

BROWN, HARRIET A.

Died at her home in Augusta, Monday, January 19, Harriet A. Brown, wife of William Brown. Mrs. Brown was 57 years of age, the mother of seven children, five of whom are living. She leaves two brothers, John Reeves of Belle Plain and Caleb Reeves of Wilmot and one sister, Sarah Jane Russell of Douglass. The funeral occurs tomorrow. (Walnut Valley Times, January 23, 1903)

BROWN, RAYMOND ELLERY

Raymond Ellery Brown, 76, Route 1, Burns, died Tuesday at his home. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Burns United Methodist church. Burial will be at Burns cemetery.

He was born Oct. 7, 1896, at Assumption, Ill. He married Anna Cathrine Olberding April 26, 1941 at Burns. He had lived in Burns since 1906, and was a retired farmer and stockman.

He was a member of the Burns United Methodist church. Advance Masonic Lodge 114 of Florence, Chapter 35 of the Royal Arch Masons of El Dorado, Council 20 of the Royal and Select Masters of El Dorado, Commandery 19 Knights Templar of El Dorado, and American Legion Post 348 of Burns.

Survivors include: his wife, Anna, of the home; two sons, Mark Allen of Wichita and David Brian of Burns; and two grandchildren. Kirby Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. (El Dorado Times, June 6, 1973)

COXE, ANN BAKER

Died, September 7th at her home in this city, Mrs. Ann Baker Coxe, aged 78 years. Mrs. Coxe was born in Connecticut August 10th 1821 and came as one of the pioneers here, early in 1871 and was honored and esteemed by all who knew her. Her death has been anticipated for several days and her sons were called to her bedside in anticipation of her life's end. THree children survive her, M. C. Milford, editor of the Vinita, Indian, Territory, Chieftain; J. A. Maitland of Brookfield, Mo., and Miss Ida Coxe of El Dorado. The funeral accurred at 5 this afternoon and her body was consigned to the grave in Belle Vista. Rev. S. McCAderson conducted the services Thursday evening. COXE, IDA A.

Funeral services for Miss Ida A. Coxe of Wichita but formerly a resident of El Dorado, who died at  a Wichita Hospital Monday, were held at Byrd Funreal Home this morning. Rev. J. C. Thorns pastor of the Presbyterian Church officiated. Interment was made in Belle Vista Cemetery. C. A. Wallingford and C. E. Fullinwider both of El Dorado and George F. McIntire and Swan T. Cox both of Wichita were pallbearers. Mrs. Wendell H. Bullerdiek sang "More About Jesus" and "Crossing the Bar."  Mrs. C. A. Wallingford played the accompaniments. Those from Wichita here for the services included Mrs. H. T. Davidson, Mr. and Mrs. Swan T. Cox and Mr. and Mrs. George F. McIntire and son Charles. CUPP, LEULU MOSSMAN (SHERIDAN MRS.)

The sudden death of Mrs. Sheridan Cupp reminds us all of the vast uncertainty of life. Mrs. Cupp was formerly Miss Leulu Mossman, daughter of Winfield Mossman of Maise, Kansas. She leaves a husband and two little babies, who will never more know a true mother’s love. (Walnut Valley Times, January 16, 1903, Volume XXXIII, Number 52)

CUPP, U. S. MRS.

Died, at her home near Towanda, Sunday, January 11, Mrs. U. S. Cupp. She has been sick several weeks with pneumonia. Besides her husband, Mrs. Cupp leaves two children, who are only a few years of age. The funeral will occur tomorrow. (Walnut Valley times, January 16, 1903, Volume XXXIII, Number 52)

HANES, ARMINDA (MRS. S. S.)

The news of the death of Mrs. Arminda Hanes, wife of S. S. Hanes, of Potwin, which occurred Saturday night, February 18 at 10 p.m. brings sorrow to a host of friends.

Arminda J. Baty was born December 3, 1826 in Ripley, Ohio, and was at the time of her death78 years of age. She was married in 1843 to Francis Bishop, of this union were born six children, five sons and one daughter, four sons who reside in Missouri were unable to be with her, one son, John Bishop of Chelsea and her daughter, Mrs. Alex Miller of El Dorado were present at the time of her death. Mr. Bishop died nine years ago. She was married February 11, 1902 to S. S. Hanes, of Potwin. The deceased was converted in 1849 and joined the Baptist church at Lacon, Ill., since coming to Potwin she united with the Methodist Church.

The husband and sons and daughter are grief stricken over the unexpected loss of this dear one who has made their home bright and cheerful and taught them the value of a wife and mother’s guidance, comfort and affections. The numerous friends here give their sincerest sympathy to the sorrowing ones. Funeral services were conducted from the home at 10 a.m. Monday by Rev. Votaw and she was laid to rest in McGill cemetery. (The Republican, February 21, 1905)

TILLEY, MRS.

The Tilley boys received a telegram Thursday containing the sad news that their mother had died near Hennesy, Oklahoma. They left on the early morning train for that place. The remains were brought to Latham yesterday and the funeral was preached by Rev. C. A. Kitch at the M. E. church. The remains were laid to rest in the cemetery at Brownlow. The sorrowing relatives have the deepest sympathy of all – Latham Mirror (Walnut Valley Times, January 16, 1903, volume XXXIII, number 52)

SCHENCK, ROSE MAY

Rose May Schenck, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Schenck, 1021 South Emporia Street, died at birth here yesterday afternoon. Funeral services were held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Hudson, grandparents of the infant, 1018 South Atchison Street, this afternoon. Interment was made in West Cemetery.

Surviving besides the parents and grandparents are two sisters, Marcella age 7 and Florence 5; a brother, Joseph 8 and another grandmother, Mrs. Laura Needham of Lamoni, Iowa. The Byrd Funeral Home was in charge. (El Dorado Times, Wednesday, March 29, 1933)

Funeral services for Rose May Schenck, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Schenck, 1021 South Emporia Street, who died Tuesday were held yesterday afternoon at the home of her grandparents Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Hudson, 1018 South Atchison street. Rev. Charles Merrill of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ, Latter Day Saints, officiated.

A duet sang “Abide with Me.” “When He Cometh” and “My God How Wonderful Thou Art.” Interment was made in West cemetery. The Byrd Funeral Home was in charge. (El Dorado Times, Thursday, March 30, 1933)

SLAYMAN, WILLIAM

William Slayman, 33, died at his home at Augusta yesterday afternoon.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Kate Slayman, his father, Elmer Slayman of Webb city, Mo., five sisters, Mrs. Ella Tapana and Ruby Slayman of Lamar, Colo.; Mrs. Vera Pearson of Kilgore, Tex.; Mrs. Lon Kilgore of Webb City, Mo., and Mrs. Lottie Russel of Augusta; a brother, Walter Clayman of Bavter.

Funeral services will be held at the Dunsford Funeral Home in Augusta tomorrow morning at 10:30 with the Rev. F. W. Condit officiating. (El Dorado Times, Wednesday, March 12, 1932)

SMITH, HOWARD N.

George (Doc) Smith, official sign painter and dog catcher for the city, received word this morning that his brother, Howard N. Smith, aged 42 years, a former resident of El Dorado and Augusta had died last Monday in Ventura, Calif., after an illness of some time. The funeral services were held on Wednesday at Ventura.

Howard Smith was well known in El Dorado and Augusta, where he had lived most of his life. He left here about three years ago for the coast and he had lived there since. In addition to his brother, George, Howard is survived by his widow, three children and a sister, all of whom live in California, and his mother and a brother, Robert who reside in El Dorado. SPENCER, ED

Ed Spencer, aged 66 years, a resident of Augusta all but about six years of his life, was drowned in Four Mile Creek southwest of Augusta, late yesterday afternoon. The body was found in two feet of water by Frank Thompson, a son-in-law.

A physician who recently had treated Mr. Spencer for an illness said that he had sinking or fainting spells while ill. It is thought that he was overcome with one of these attacks as he fished and fell into the water where he drowned.

Spencer was fishing with Thompson and another son in law, Lem Hughes.

Because of his long residence at Augusta, Mr. Spencer was widely known throughout the south part of the county. He also was well known in El Dorado where he spent much time a few years ago while official fumigator for the Butler County Board of Health. Mr. Spencer also had been an employee of the Augusta Police Department in recent years.

Mr. Spencer was born in Iowa and he moved with his parents to Augusta when a small boy.

Funeral services will be held at the Augusta Christian Church at 3 o’clock Monday. Dan Smith, pastor, will be in charge. Burial will be made in the Elmwood Cemetery. (El Dorado Times, Saturday, April 22, 1933)

TATMAN, GEORGE B.

Funeral services for George B. Tatman, who died here Wednesday were held at the Adams & McMickell Funeral Home last evening with Rev. Fred W. Condit, pastor of the Christian Church, officiating.

A trio, composed of Mrs. Will Forney, Mrs. Harry Small and Mrs. G. W. Elson sang “The Old Rugged Cross” and “Does Jesus Care?” They were accompanied on the piano by Mrs. Cal Fisk. The body was taken to Agricola this morning where interment will be made. (El Dorado times, Friday, June 23, 1933)

TIETZ, MR.

A note from Leonard E. Tietz received today, conveys the information that his father died at Corning, Kans., Tuesday afternoon. The funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon. The elder Tietz was taken suddenly sick last Saturday and Mr. and Mrs. Teitz and children went from here at once to Corning and were with him at the time of his death.
