ARMSTRONG, JENNIE A.

Mrs. Jennie A. Armstrong was 63 years old. She was born November 29, 1858, at Yorkshire, England. When a young girl, she came to America and located with her parents in Michigan.

She was married to J. H. Armstrong, December 25, 1878, in Michigan and a short time later came to Kansas, settling near El Dorado. She had lived here for 43 years.

Mrs. Armstrong was a member of the Christian Church and a leader in the El Dorado congregation. She always took an interest in all community affairs and was ever ready to help those in need. Her death will be deeply felt by scores of El Doradoans.

In addition to Mr. Armstrong, the deceased is survived by three children. They are Mrs. George Pett, of Climax, Mich., R. C. Armstrong, Colusa, Calif., and Mrs. Henry C. Ray of Wichita.

No funeral arrangements will be made until news is received from relatives residing at a distance. It is certain, however, services will not be held before Thursday. (El Dorado Times, July 12, 1921)

BURNER, FRANK B.

Funeral services for Frank B. Burner, pioneer resident of Walnut Township who died Sunday were held yesterday morning at the Burner home, a mile and a half south of Haverhill. The body was brought to El Dorado and burial was made in West Cemetery, a large number of friends of the deceased attended the service. (El Dorado Times, July 6, 1921, Wednesday)

BYRUM, JOHN

Funeral services over the body of the late John Byrum, who died early yesterday morning after an illness of several months caused by brain tumor, will be held at 2 o’clock tomorrow afternoon at the Byrum home, 711 North Gordy street. Rev. M. O. Clemmons, pastor of the Baptist Church will officiate while the El Dorado Odd Fellows Lodge will have charge of the services. Burial will be made in Belle Vista Cemetery. CODY, ALVA

Alva Cody, aged 25, a well known young farmer of the south part of the county, was fatally injured Friday afternoon when the motor truck he was driving was struck by the eastbound Frisco flyer near the railroad company’s station at Haverhill. Cody was thrown from the seat of the truck through the windshield and on to the right-of-way. He was badly cut about the head and suffered internal injuries, death occurring early Saturday morning at the Augusta Hospital.

Cody was hauling wheat from his farm to the elevator at Haverhill at the time of the accident. He had made several trips previously during the day and was on the way to the elevator when the train struck the truck.

The truck is said to have been carried about seventy-five feet before being thrown from the track. The train was going about forty miles an hour.

Witnesses of the accident said they attempted to warn Cody of the approaching train, but the truck and the train were making such a nose they could not attract his attention.

Cody is the son of Mrs. John Cody, who lives near the Fox Bush Field. Funeral services were held at Augusta today. (El Dorado Times, July 11, 1921)

KUNZE, JOSEPH

We are again called upon to note the death of one of Humboldt early settlers, Joseph Kunze, who came to Humbodlt when seven years of age and resided near this town for many years, where he had a host of friends, who together with the family mourn the loss of a good man.

Joseph Andrew Kunze was born near Bresleau, Germany, November 1853, and died near Rosalia, Kansas June 19, 1921, aged 68 years, 5 months and 5 days. He came to this country when a small boy and located with his parents on a farm southeast of Humboldt where he grew to manhood. On August 13, 1876 he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth J. Pollard and to this union were born ten children, five of whom preceded their father in death. In 1890 he moved to Seattle, Wash., where they spent two years when they again returned to Richardson county. In 1900 the family moved to Rosalia, Kansas, where he lived at the time of his death. He became a member of the Christian Church in 1895 and was a most faithful member. He was a man who was well reared and upon all political doings. About a year ago Mr. Kunze had the flu, from the effects of which he never fully recovered. He leaves to mourn his departure his wife, three sons and two daughters, P. M. Kunze of El Dorado, L. P. Kunze of Humblodt, M. R. Kunze of Douglass, Wyo., Mrs. Herman King of El Dorado and Edith May Kunz of Rosalia. Also one brother, Hugo Hukze of Woodburn, Ore., Mrs. Emma McCorrmick, Kingdom, Kans., and Mrs. Frank Bates, Kensington.

Services were held at the home of his son, L. P. Kunze south of this town on Wednesday morning. Rev. B. H. Dawson, pastor of the Christian Church conducted the services and interment was made in Lynchburg cemetery. Humboldt (Nebraska) Standard. (El Dorado Times, July 5, 1921, Tuesday)

LINDSEY, AMOS

Services were May 28 for Amos Lindsey, 71, Indianola, Neb., who was a former El Dorado resident and stepson of an El Dorado woman. He died May 25 in Hastings, Neb.

He was born May 24, 1904 in Berne, Ind., to Arby and Christine Lindsey. In 1916 he came to El Dorado where he married Edith Redburn Nov. 8, 1924. They moved to Nebraska in 1945.

Survivors include his wife, of Indianola; two sons, David of Big Springs, Neb., and Allen of North Platte, Neb.; a stepmother, Mrs. Reta Lindsey of El Dorado and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister.

The funeral was in Carpenter’s Funeral Home, Indianola, with Gerald Beckenhour officiating. Burial was in Indianola Cemetery. (El Dorado Times, May 25, 1975)

LITTON, LESLIE

Leslie Litton, 67, of Towanda, died Monday evening at Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital, El Dorado.

He was born March 10, 1908 in Virginia. Mr. Litton had spent almost his entire life in this area. He worked for the Boeing Company, Wichita, for 25 years until his retirement in April 1973.

He was a member of the First Christian Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. During World War II, he served with the United States Army.

Survivors include his wife, Isabelle, of the home; one daughter, Mrs. Pat Shropshire, El Dorado, a brother, Fred Litton, Tulare, California, two sisters, Mrs. Ruby Saunders and Mrs. Maude Nace, Denver, Colorado.

He was preceded in death by one grandson, Terry Shropshire, in September, 1972.

Services will be conducted today (Thursday) at 10 a.m. at Dietz-Carlson Colonial Chapel. Burial will be in Sunset Lawns Cemetery, El Dorado. (El Dorado times, September 25, 1975)

LOOMIS, MARCELLA

Mrs. Marcella Loomis, 84, a former Augusta resident, died Tuesday, June 17, 1986 at a nursing home in Lee’s Summit, Mo., where she lived. Services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 19 at Newcomer’s Floral Hills Chapel in Kansas city. Burial was in Floral Hills Cemetery.

She was born in Sioux City, Iowa. During the 1930s she lived in Augusta and worked for Skelly Oil. She was a secretary for Skelly for 20 years, retiring in 1947.

She was a member of the Central United Methodist Church in Kansas City, Kan.

Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Catherine Letts of Mechanicsburg, Pa., who was known as Catherine Hawthorne when she lived in El Dorado and who married Edgar Letts.

Other survivors include a son, R. Sam Washburn of Houston and two grandchildren and a great-grandson.

The family suggests contributions to the Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders Association. (El Dorado Times, June 25, 1986)

LOUGH, BERMA A.

Berma A. Lough, 73, of Augusta, retired Sedgwick County Health Department nurse’s aide, died Wednesday, July 30, 1986. Service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Resthaven Mortuary Chapel in Wichita.

Survivors include her husband, James E., sons, Jim of Napa, Calif., Ellsworth C. of Wichita and Larry of Haysville, daughters, Joy Starkey of Wichita, Naomi Kirtley of Littleton, Colo., and Carol Eloit of Haysville, brothers, Thomas Cooper of Oklahoma City, Elmo Major Cooper of Watonga, Okla., and Alton Cooper of Kansas City, Mo.; sister, Joy Stevens of Gary, Okla., and 21 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.

Memorial has been established with the American Heart Association. (El Dorado Times, August 1, 1986)

LOVE, ALFRED L.

Alfred L. Love, 84, of Newton, and a former El Dorado resident (from 1954 to 1966), died Monday at Bethel Deaconess Hospital in Newton. Graveside services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday at Walnut Valley Memorial Park in El Dorado.

He was born July 12, 1901 in Pawnee, Okla., the son of James and Della Love. He was married to Opal Dannenberg Aug. 13, 1921 at Sapulpa, Okla. She preceded him in death on Nov. 26, 1976.

He was a retired production foreman for General American Oil Co. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Drumright, Okla., the Masonic Lodge of Plainville, Kan., the Moose Lodge of Grove, Okla., and the Harvey County Senior Citizens.

Survivors include his son, Bill of Denver, Colo., one daughter, Carmen Houser of Newton, two brothers, Calvin of Drumright and Bob of Odessa, Texas., two sisters, Princie Spruill of Odessa and Ellen Griffith of Pawnee, Okla., and three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Memorials are to the American Cancer Society or to the Kansas Arthritis Foundation.

LOVE, RALEIGH W.

Services for Raleigh W. Love, 76, of 1416 Sunset, who died Wednesday are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at the Kirby Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Sunset Lawns Cemetery.

Mr. Love was born July 9, 1897, at Severy, the son of J. M. and Nancy Fudge Love. He married Mary Bowser Nov. 24, 1920 in Wichita.

He had lived in El Dorado for the past 12 years; previous to that in Burden eight years and in El Dorado for 10 years. He was a member of the First Christian Church Oddfellows Lodge No. 74, Encampment No. 56 and the Friendship Rebekah Lodge No. 10 of El Dorado.

In August 1962, following 32 years of employment he retired from Texaco.

Survivors include his wife, Mary of the home; three daughters, Mrs. J. E. (Darlene) Brecht, Shreveport, La., Mrs. James A. (Margaret) Maguire, Wichita and Mrs. Martin (Nancy) Dever, of El Paso, Texas; three sons, R. Keith Love, 1418 Sunset Rd., David A. Love 1414 Sunset Rd, and Ernest M. Love, new Hampton, Mo., a sister, Mrs. Clarice Masterson, Piedmont; a brother Jack Love, Piedmont and 17 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and four sisters.

A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society, through Mrs. Kenneth Fisher, 611 W. Ash or the Kirby Funeral Home. (El Dorado times, June 26, 1975)

LOWMASTER, ROY A.

Roy A. Lowmaster, 917 S. Denver, died Wednesday, Oct. 1 at the Veterans Administration in Wichita at the age of 48. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 10 a.m. at the Carlson Funeral Home which is in charge of arrangements, with burial in Fort Scott cemetery at 3 p.m.

He was born Sept. 12, 1938 in Thayer, Kan., the son of Roy A. and Vera Grace Leonard Lowmaster.

He was a master sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps. He also was a mechanic for Janney’s, Cooke’s Auto and Independent Truck Service. He had lived in El Dorado since moving here from Buford, S.C. in 1978.

He was married to Vicki Stevenson, July 3, 1960 in Clayton, N.M.

Survivors include his wife, Vicki of the home, Terry of Route 4, in El Dorado, three daughters, Melissa and Angela Lowmaster of El Dorado and Cynthia Lowmaster of Topeka, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Roy A. Lowmaster of El Dorado, three brothers, Milton of Independence, Kan., Wayne of Monnet, Mo.; and Darrell of El Dorado, four sisters, Thelma Chiediger of Topeka, Diana Liggett of Rosalia, Margaret Ann Heines of California and Minnie Heines of Phoenix, Aria.

A memorial to the family is established at the Walnut Valley State Bank. (El Dorado Times, Oct. 1, 1986)

Services for Roy Andrew Lowmaster, Jr., 48, of 917 S. Denver, were held Friday morning Oct 3 at Carlsons Colonial Chapel. Graveside services and burial with full military rites will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Fort Scott National cemetery in Fort Scott, Kan.

Mr. Lowmaster died Wednesday, Oct. 1.

The Rev. Hank Demous, pastor of the First Christian Church, officiated at the services.

Casket bearers were Herb Ellis, Duane Dauber, Gene Herrmann, Frank Grigsby, Dennis Cooke, and Scott Liggett. (El Dorado times, Oct. 4, 1986)

SAGE, C. R.

C. R. Sage, who had been a resident of El dorado for the past four years, died about 10 o’clock last night at his home 216 Griffith Street. The body will be taken to Lawrence for burial. Mr. Sage became suddenly ill while at work at his motor car exchange corner of East Central Avenue and Vine Street, Thursday afternoon. He was by himself at the time and when found was lying on the ground. He was removed to his house immediately. Mr. Sage worked as a carpenter when he first came to El Dorado.

The deceased is survived by his widow. (El Dorado Times, Saturday, July 2, 1921)
