Neighbor Finds Body of Emil Martin in Haymow: Despondent for Weeks
Despondent because of ill health, Emil Martin, 22 years old and the son of Andrew Martin, shot and killed himself late Friday night in the haymow at the family residence, two miles south of Augusta. Coroner W. E. Turner, County Attorney, C. W. Steiger and Sheriff Newt Purcell left at noon for the scene and an inquest will be held during the afternoon.
According to the father, young Martin, although unusually despondent for the last two or three weeks was in better spirits Friday night. He stayed at home with the family and was in a noticeably happy mood. About 10 oclock when the family retired he went out doors. The parents thought he had gone to bed.
When it was discovered Saturday morning that he had not occupied his bed during the night a search was instituted. It was found he had taken a horse from the barn and rode for several miles up the road and returned. Unable to find further trace, Mr. Martin called William Carter, a neighbor, to assist in the search. Carter went into the hayloft and discovered the body crumpled and partially hidden beneath the hay.
It was evident that he had placed the gun at his right temple and pulled the trigger. A shot gun was used. The entire upper portion of his head was blown off. It is believed he took the ride in an effort to resist suicide.
He is survived by his parents and two sisters, living in Council Bluffs, Ia. He was educated in the schools of Augusta. Funeral services have not been arranged. (Walnut Valley Times, January 29, 1916)
Note Fails to Tell Cause of Martin Suicide
Watch is Given to Father and Money to Mother Burial Tuesday
Although a note, filled with pathos and love suggestive of an absolute absence of home, was left by young Emil Martin, who committed suicide near Augusta Friday night, no intimation as to cause of the act was given. The note dated, January 28, was found by Andrew Martin, father of the dead boy, in the latters room at the family home and is as follows:
My Dear Folks: Please give the watch to Papa. Wishing you all good health and happiness, I remain,
Your loving brother,
Emil Martin.
P.S. Please give this 20 dollars to my mother as she has been awful good to me. So goodbye all, Now please dont worry about me as I think I am better off.
It is thought despondency, due to bad health suggested death as the only relief. The body was found in the haymow, this morning with a bullet hole through the head. He had placed the muzzle of a .22 caliber rifle in his mouth and pulled the trigger.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon. Burial will take place at the Augusta Cemetery. (Walnut Valley Times, January 31, 1916)
