The funeral of J. M. Brickley, Rosalia pioneer and Missouri Pacific employee for 28 years was held from the Methodist Church in Rosalia, Monday afternoon. Mr. Brickley died Friday in the Missouri Pacific hospital in St. Louis after a prolonged illness from stomach trouble. He is survived by his widow and four children. Mr. Brickley came to Butler County with his father, Sam Brickly in 1873. He was a good man and citizen and his demise is sincerely mourned. (Walnut Valley Times, June 12, 1916)
After months of suffering from heart trouble, Mrs. Hester Buchanan, 81, and a pioneer, died at the home of her son, Orlando Buchanan, two miles east of Chelsea, June 9. The funeral will be held Sunday from the Methodist Church at Chelsea, conducted by Rev. O. W. Brown, the pastor, followed by interment in Chelsea Cemetery.
Mrs. Buchanan is survived by six children, Charles, Orlando, Lorenzo Buchanan and John Buchanan of California; Mrs. Minerva Kitzelman, El Dorado and Mrs. Augusta Lawson, Stillwater, Okla. She also leaves one brother, Gus Deaver, Whittier, Cali., and one sister, Mrs. Nancy Franklin, Fairfield, Iowa. (Walnut Valley Times, June 10, 1916)
James R. Cheslic, 78, Burlington, retired salvage yard operator, mechanic and former Augusta resident, passed away on Friday, Nov. 17, 2006.
The family will meet with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 24, at Jones Funeral Home in Burlington. There is no service planned. Inurnment will be at Bailey Cemetery, west of Burlington, at a later time.
He was born on Oct. 22, 1928 in Attica, the son of Ralph and Ada Harding Cheslic.
His survivors include: mother, Ada Cheslic of Alva, Okla.; sons, Jimmy (Susan) Cheslic of Wichita, Michael (Beverly) Cheslic of Augusta, Kenneth (Deb) Roney of Burlington, Larry Scott (Marion) Cheslic of Augusta, Herk (Chris) Talley of Burlington, and Dough (Barbara) Cummings of Jacobs Creek; daughters, Nancy (Junior) Rainey of Covington, La., Nickie Cheslie of Burlington, and Teresa (Ronnie) Cook of Middleton, Ind.; sisters, Violet (Bud) Cattin of Augusta, Caroline (Marshall) Ray of Belle Vista, Ark., Neoma Dale of Topeka, and Alice Reed of Clinton, Okla.; brothers, Don (Velma) Cheslic of Arkansas City and Raymond Cheslic; 22 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father and his wife, Louise.
A James Cheslic Memorial Fund has been established.

Daniel "Dan" Dennett, 57, Douglass, retired Boeing system analyst, died November 13, 2006.
Visitation 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday with the family present from 4 to 6 p.m.; service 2 p.m. Friday, all at Smith Mortuary in Derby.
Dan was born Oct. 6, 1949 in Wichita, the son of the late Francis and Norma (Hamlett) Dennett.
Survivors include: wife, Dolores Dennett, Douglass; children, Shawn Dennett, Phoenix, Ariz., Michael Dennett, Goldsboro, NC; step-children, Tammy Foltz, Douglass, Rocky Anderson, Derby; seven step-grandchildren; one step-great-granddaughter.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established with Victory in the Valley, Inc., 3755 East Douglass, Wichita, Kansas 67218.

Mrs. Elizabeth Freeman, wife of W. P. Freeman, former residents and pioneers of Lincoln township, died at the home in Ralston, Okla., Tuesday morning of lung trouble. Her age was about 50 years.
The body will be brought here on the 11:15 Santa Fe train Thursday and the funeral will be held from Ridgeway school house near DeGraff at 2:30 Thursday. Rev. L. T. Faulders will conduct the service and burial will take place in Ridgeway Cemetery.
Mrs. Freeman is survived by her husband and three children. Irvin Freeman and Mrs. Effie Sanders of Ralston, Okla., and Mrs. Hazel Thompson of DeGraff. (Walnut Valley Times, June 14, 1916)
Garnet Faye Hill, 91, Douglass, homemaker, died on Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2006.
Funeral service was held this morning at the Douglass United Methodist Church.
Survivors include: daughters, Gladys Bracken, Gueda Springs, stepson, Clark Hill, Cedar Vale; step-daughters, Neva Wakefield, Udall and Alice Hutton, Brea, Calif.; 14 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Homer; daughter, Marilyn Metheny; brothers, Tom, Joe and Eldon Wakefield; twin sister, Florence Martin and a sister, Margaret Bush.

Ida May Hunt, wife of Marion Hunt, died at the home in El Dorado Friday morning of heart failure. Funeral arrangements have not been announced but probably will be held from the home Saturday afternoon at 2:30 Saturday from the Christian Church. Rev. L. T. Faulders will conduct the service. Burial in West Cemetery.
Mrs. Hunt was born in Galesburg, Kansas April 2, 1867. She was married to Marion Hunt in El Dorado in 1884. She was the mother of ten children, six of whom with their father survive. They are Mrs. Della Girod, Cambridge, Mrs. Alona Davidson, El Dorado, Charles Hunt, Atlanta, Mrs. Ruth Hall, El Dorado, and Eva Percy Hunt, El Dorado. (Walnut Valley Times, June 16, 1916)

John S. "Little John" Martin, III, 49, of Augusta, loving husband, father and brother, passed away Saturday, Nov. 18, 2006.
Viewing 2 - 8 p.m. Wednesday with family to greet friends from 6 - 8 p.m. and 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Friday at Headley Funeral Chapel, Augusta. Rosary 7 p.m. Friday and Mass 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 25, 2006, both at St. James Catholic Church, Augusta. Burial at Calvary Cemetery, Augusta.
John was born in Winfield on June 11, 1957, he was the son of the late John Stanley and Mildred Jean (Baker) Martin. He had been a machinist at Spirit and Boeing for 18 years. John enjoyed tearing things apart just to rebuild them, watching his kids play sports, and he loved to play slow pitch ball. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a New Horizons 4-H club leader. On Feb. 25, 1986 he married Kim Moore in Augusta. She survives.
Other survivors include: his children, Candi Suter and her husband Chris of Augusta, Crystal Martin and John Thomas "J.T." Martin of the home; a brother, Tom Martin and his wife Vickie of Las Vegas, Nev.; sisters, Nancy Barnaby and her husband Art of Manhattan; Sally Morgan and her husband Ed of Moline; Patty Wiseman and her husband Randy of Howard; and Jean Willson and her husband Bill of Leavenworth.

Harvey McCown, 15 years old and a resident of Chillicothe, Mo., died at a local hospital, early Thursday evening of uremic poisioning. Funeral services will be held at the W. E. Turner undertaking parlors at 2 oclock Saturday, followed by burial in the East Cemetery.
The young man arrived in El Dorado Saturday for a visit at the home of his aunt, Mrs. J. H. parting. He became ill Tuesday and was taken to the hospital Wednesday. His condition Thursday morning indicated that he could not recover. He is survived by a grandfather, J. H. Shadden of Huron, South Dakota, and three sisters, Mrs. R. C. Reid, Joplin, Mo., and Mrs. J. A. Mygatt and Miss Mabel McCown both of Kansas City. The sisters will arrive Friday evening. (Walnut Valley Times, July 28, 1916)
Nellie Antionette (Smith) Schuck, 100, Augusta, homemaker, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2006.
Arrangements are pending in Texarkana, Ark. There will be no local service. Burial will be in Silverino Cemetery, Texarkana, Ark.
She was born on Aug. 7, 1906, the daughter of John Peter and Lola Antionette (Wilbur) Smith. She married Edmund Schuck on April 18, 1938. He preceded her in death in 1977.
She is survived by: daughter Diane and her husband Ralph Nichols of Augusta; sister, Katy Robertson of Fouke, Ark.; seven grandsons; 20 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by: her parents; one infant son, Nelson Rex Schuck; grandson, John David Webb; six brothers and four sisters.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Isaac Daniel Varner, 82, and a pioneer, died at the home of his son, M. E. Varner in Fairview township, Wednesday morning. The funeral will be held from the Christian Church in Towanda, at 2:30 Thursday. Burial will take place in Towanda Cemetery.
Mr. Varner was born in Monroe county, Ohio, March 8, 1834. He came to Kansas in 1871 and located on the homestead in Fairview Township. Mrs. Varner died four years ago. Seven children survive: E. A. Varner and M. E. Varner, Fairview; F. H. Varner, Clifford, Mrs. Emma Lamb and Mrs. A. G. Winkler, El Dorado; Mrs. J. E. Steele, Wichita and Mrs. Dulcie Cook, Sitka, Kansas.
