BAKER, JENNY SUNDGREN

Jenny Sundgren Baker, 24, of Rosalia, died Saturday, Nov. 8, 2003, as a result of an automobile accident. Memorial services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First Christian Church. Pastor Stan Seymour will officiate at the services.

She was born June 28, 1979, in El Dorado, the daughter of Steven and Jacque Lipscomb Sundgren. She attended school in Rosalia and graduated valedictorian from Flinthills High School in the Class of 1997. She also graduated with honors from Kansas State University in 2000 with degrees in psychology and business and a minor in gerontology. On June 2, 2001, she was married to Shane Baker at the Leon Christian Church. She was presently the Administrator of Vintage Place, Derby.

Survivors include: husband, Shane, of the home; sister, Jamie Sundgren of El Dorado; parents, Steve and Jacque Sundgren of Rosalia; grandmother, Charmian Sundgren of Rosalia; and grandparents, Rex and Jessie Rose of Augusta.

She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Norman Sundgren.

The Jenny Sundgren Baker Memorial Fund has been established. The fund will be used for purchasing a salad bar for the residents of Vintage Place and also used for "Protect the Flinthills." BEARD, L. MAY

L. May Beard, 83, of Augusta, died Friday, Oct. 31, 2003, at The Vyne, Harry Hynes Hospice in Wichita. Services are 1 p.m. Wednesday at Carlson Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Lakeview Mausoleum in Wichita. Visitation will begin Monday morning at the funeral home.

She was born Aug. 27, 1920, at El Dorado, the daughter of Nathan and Louise (Walder) Gillis. She received her Masters Degree from Emporia State Teachers College in 1965. She was a pioneer in the Special Education Program for Emotionally Challenged Children. She taught at Haverhill Elementary Grade School in the 6th, 7th and 8th grades. She also taught at Garfield Elementary and the Junior High School, both in Augusta.

She was a member of Trumpets of Yahveh in Augusta and the Retired Teachers Association. She had made her home in Augusta since 1993, after living for many years in the rural Atlanta community in southern Butler cunty.

Those she leaves are three daughters, Suzie VanTries, Augusta; Janie Suits, Dennard, Ark.; and Carol Lewis, Leon; two brothers, Norman Gillis, Grand Rapids, Mich. and Harold Gillis, Ocala, Fla.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and three sisters.

Memorials in her memory for the Inpatient Unit at The Vyne, Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice in Wichita, may be left at Carlson Funeral Home, where friends may call.

BOYER, CHARLES P.

Charles P. Boyer, 76, of Augusta, formerly of Moline, died Sunday, Nov. 2, 2003, at Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital in El Dorado. Graveside services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Moline Cemetery in Moline with Rev. Ken Beckner of the First Southern Baptist Church of Augusta officiating.

He was born on Dec. 10, 1926, at Guthrie, Ky., the son of James Overton and Ida Mae (Murphy) Boyer. He attended school and grew to manhood in Kentucky. He entered the United States Army in February 1945 and was stationed overseas in Korea for two years. In 1949 he moved to Moline where he married Mary Fern Clubine on Dec. 17, 1949. He was plant operator at the Martin Marietta Rock Quarry in Moline for 43 years. He and his wife made their home at Moline until moving to Augusta where they have lived for the last five years.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Moline and was currently a member of the First Southern Baptist Church of Augusta.

Survivors include: his wife, Fern; daughters, Nancy and husband Jerry Barnett of El Dorado and Nita and husband Lennie Allen of Augusta; sisters, Grace Debow of Hopkinsville, Ky., Anne Ruth Goff of McGee, Miss., Dotsy Biggers and Faye Sweeny, both of Clarksville, Tenn., Nita Morgan and Billy Warren, both of Guthrie, Ky., and Shirley Armstrong of College Grove, Tenn.; and six grandchildren.

Memorials have been established with the First Baptist Church of Moline and the First Southern Baptist Church of Augusta for youth scholarships for church camps. Contributions may be left with the funeral home.

CASPER, GUY

Guy Casper, 96, of El Dorado, died Thursday, Nov. 6, 2003, at Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital. Graveside services are 11 a.m. Monday at Wilson City Cemetery.

He was born April 6, 1907, at Dorrance, the son of Charles and Clara (Miller) Casper. He came to El Dorado in 1930 from Ellsworth and was a heavy equipment operator for Ellis Heavy Equipment, Banks Construction and for various different contractors. He also was the former owner and operator of Dales Service Station.

On May 14, 1929, he married Mary Agnes Shiroky. She preceded him in death on Jan. 21, 1979. He later married Reta Good Dodson on Feb. 14, 1980.

Survivors include: wife, Reta, of the home; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, six brothers and two sisters.

CONRAD, DORIS FAY "MIMI"

Doris Fay "Mimi" Conrad, 81, of Burns, died Thursday, Oct. 30, 2003, at her home in Burns. Memorial services ar 1 p.m. Tuesday at Carlson Funeral Home.

She was born April 8, 1922, at Red Bluff, Calif., the daughter of Everett and Eulah Thompson Stirewalt. She was a homemaker and had made her home in Burns since 1982, moving from Wichita. She was a baby-sitter for many children and was known to all of them as "Mimi." She attended the Methodist Church.

On Jan. 20, 1961, she married Don Conrad in Everett, Wash.

Survivors include: husband, of the home; son, Larry Beam of Burns; daughter, Arlene Winsor of Burns; brother, Cy Stirewalt of Oregon; sister, Wilma Price of Oregon City, Ore.; 16 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Richard Beam; granddaughter, Doris; two brothers; and one sister.

FROST, MAXINE E.

Maxine E. Frost, 84, of Augusta, died Friday, Oct. 31, 2003. Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Dunsford Chapel in Augusta. Visitation will be 10 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday and 10 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

She was born Jan. 20, 1919, at Augusta, the daughter of Jay and Fern (Boucher) Reed. She was the retired co-owner of Frost Market in Augusta, Pickeral Corner in Gordon and also worked at Shafer's Flower Shop and Snyder's Flowers Shop in Augusta.

Survivors include: daughter, Carol and husband Philip Courtwright of Augusta; brothers, Lyle B. Reed of Wichita and Jerald and wife Winnie Reed of Decauter, Ala.; grandchildren, Julie Renee Courtwright of Fayettville, Ark., Amy and husband Mark Adams of Augusta; and Eric Wayne Courtwright of Philadelphia, Pa.; great-grandson, Devon Thomas Culp; and numerous nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest W. Frost; and son, Frederick Jay Frost.

Memorials are to the scholarship fund at First United Methodist Church or the Augusta Public Library.

HOOTEN, WILLA JO

Willa Jo Hooten, 66, formerly of El Dorado, died in Austin, Texas, after a battle with breast cancer. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Christian Church, 123 W. 9th, in Wellington.

She was born July 30, 1937, in Wellington, the daughter of Forest and Pearl Bennett. She graduated from Wellington High School in 1956. Following high school she graduated from Wichita Business School in 1957 and attended Fort Hays State College. She was married to Jim Hooten, son of Mr. and Mrs. L.W. Hooten of Wellington, in 1958. Him was the assistant football coach at Butler County Community College, assistant football coach and later head football coach at El Dorado High School from 1976-1983. He retired earlier this year as a teacher and coach in the Austin area.

Willa Jo worked as a massage therapist and aesthetician in Austin. She was a member of the Lakeway Ecumenical Church in Lakeway, Texas.

Survivors include: husband, Jim; daughters, Marcia Vaughn and husband Scott of Duncan, Okla., and Karee Ellis and husband Jeff of Austin, Texas; son, Mike Hooten of Columbia, Md.; and three grandchildren, Travis and Taylor Vaughn and Erin Ellis.

KIMBERLIN, WILLIAM LYMON "BILL"

Bill Kimberlin, 77, of Eureka, died Saturday, Oct. 25, 2003, at the Greenwood County Hospital in Eureka. Graveside services with military honors were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31 at the El Dorado Springs City Cemetery in El Dorado Springs, Mo.

He was born in Tonkawa, Okla., on Aug. 12, 1926, the son of Markus and Lillian (Spain) Kimberlin. He lived most of his life in Kansas and worked in the oil fields. In 1944 he enlisted in the Navy where he served ten years. He was a lifetime member of the American legion and JC Owens DD776. He was also a member of the Christian Church of Wichita.

In 1988 he was united in marriage to Mary (Soloman) Howerton. They had met years earlier in Schell City, Mo., where Mary was living and also where his parents were living. After their marriage they made their home in El Dorado until 1991 when they moved to Elmdale and later to Eureka.

Survivors include: his wife Mary, of the home; three sons and three daughters; several grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters.

A memorial has been established in his name with the Greenwood County Hospital in Eureka.

LARSON, GILBERT M.

Gilbert M. Larson, 93, of Leon, died Friday, Oct. 31, 2003, at Lakepoint Nursing Center in Wichita. Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at Carlson Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Leon Cemetery.

He was born Sept. 25, 1910, at Leon, the son of Olaf N. and Cora L. Mendenhall Larson. He lived all his life in this area and was a retired farmer, oilman and had worked as a custodian at the Leon Grade School. He was a member of the Leon Christian Church.

On Sept. 25, 1934, he was united in marriage to Cora F. Burlingame at Augusta. She preceded him in death on Feb. 10, 2001.

Survivors include: daughters, Elnore L. Ingalls of Leon, Ruby B. Larson and Patty J. Donham, both of Wichita; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, a sister and a grandson.

MCCOLLUM, FRANKLIN PHILLIP

Franklin Philip McCollum, 97, of Russell, died Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2003, at Main Street Manor in Russell.

He was born May 9, 1906, in Bethany, Mo., the next to the youngest of 11 children, to David Alexander and Sarah Rebecca (Hoyman) McCollum. He had three brothers and seven sisters. A sister died at age 1. His mother raised 10 children following his father's death in 1910 when he was kicked by a mule while farming. She did well for a while, cooking in restaurants and sewing for others, but Frank quit school after sixth grade and went to work to help. He drove a team in the oil field for Empire Gas and Fuel for two years, and then began working for Cities Service, where he worked for 50 years. During World War II, he could not enter military service because he was needed in the oil field. Frank retired as district supervisor of Cities Service Oil Co. in 1960. He was entered into the Kansas Oilfield Hall of Fame in El Dorado.

He married Mildren Pauline Westervelt on Aug. 17, 1930 in the Christian Church in El Dorado. To this union was born two sons: Franklin Philip and Philip Alan. They moved to Russell in 1962.

He served as chairman of the Logan (Kan.) School Board for 13 years. He was a member of the Russell Masonic Lodge #177 and Trinity United Methodist Church. He was a wonderful caring individual who cared deeply about his family, friends and the community. Frank was very proud to have received his 75th year Masonic pin in 2002.

Survivors include one son, Philp of Austin, Texas; seven grandchildren: Jennifer, Lori, Matthew, Jeff, Debbie, Melanie and Mike; and two great-grandchildren, Dylan and Emily.

He was preceded in death by his wife Mildred, on July 18, 2002, and son, Franklin, on Aug. 4,1995.

Services are to be held today at 11 a.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, Russell, with Pastor Carl Ellis officiating. Committal Services at Russell City Cemetery will be held by Russell Masonic Lodge #177.

MONIZ, JILL (KORTHASE) & HAILEY ERIN

Jill (Korthase) Moniz and Hailey Erin Moniz died Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2003, in Orlando, Fla. Services were held Tuesday, Nov. 4, at the South Orlando Baptist Church.

Jill grew up in Bartlesville, Okla., and married Eric Moniz there on May 14, 1988. They lived in Orlando, Fla., where Hailey was born on Sept. 15, 1995.

Survivors include: Eric Moniz Jr., husband and father; Jill's parents, Bob and Carla (Eutsler) Korthase of Bartlesville, Okla.; sisters, Jodi and Jamie Korthase; and grandparents, Guy and Naydine Eutsler of El Dorado. Other survivors include uncles Jack and Bill Eutsler; and cousin, Aaron Eutsler.

A scholarship has been established in Jill's and Hailey's memory at the Regency Christian Academy, where Hailey attended and Jill worked as a teacher's aid. ROSS, CLIFFORD CURTIS

Clifford Curtis Ross, 78, died Thursday, Oct. 30, 2003, in Wichita at the Galichia Hospital. Visitation will be held Nov. 7 from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. at the Graves Memorial Chapel in Caney. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 8 at the Graves Memorial Chapel. Pastor James Haynes will officiate. Private family burial will take place at a later time.

He was born May 22, 1925, in Ochelata, Okla., the son of Lee and Flossie (Gardner) Ross. He received most of his education at Havana. He served in the United States Army in the South Pacific from 1943 to 1946 during World War II. After his discharge he and Rose Anna Gurwell were married April 5, 1946, at Twin Falls, Idaho. They later divorced. He was co-owner of Caney Valley Iron and Metal for many years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Scotish Rites. He was baptized in the First Christian Church of Caney.

On Sept. 12, 1977, he married Mary Walker in Miami, Okla. They moved to El Dorado where they made their home. Together they raised five daughters and a son.

Survivors include: wife, Mary Ross, of El Dorado; adopted daughter, Tia Ross of the home; daughter, Linda Wheaton of Independence; sons, Danny Ross of Oswego and Johnny Ross of Claremore, Okla.; four step-daughters, Robin Lakin, Sandra Lakin, Bobbie Jo Jackson and Ronda Andrews, all of El Dorado; step-son, Ronnie Walker, Jr., also of El Dorado; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; sister, Mary McClure of Caney; and brother, Joe Ross of Twin Falls, Idaho.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters, five brothers and two twin great-grandsons.

SEED, GERALDINE (JERRY)

Geraldine (Jerry) Seed, 77, of Saginaw, Mich., formerly of Leon, died Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003. Services were held Tuesday, Oct. 14 in Saginaw, Mich.

She was the daughter of Jay B. and Merle (Eckel) Seed. After graduating from Leon High School, she entered into nurses training at St. Francis School of Nursing in Wichita. She married Paul J. Horn on June 29, 1947. He preceded her in death in February 2001. She was employed as a registered nurse in Saginaw, working for the same doctor for 25 years. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and a longtime member of the Saginaw Bay Yacht Club. She loved to fish, boat, take long trips in their motor home and winter in Arizona.

Survivors include: daughters, Trish Rotondo of St. Claire, Mich., and Charlene Weber of Saginaw, Mich.; brother, retired Col. Donald Seed of California; and aunt, Lois Thompson of California.

She was preceded in death by her husband and parents. (El Dorado Times, November 1, 2003)

SHARP, GUY L. "JACK"

Guy L. "Jack" Sharp, 81, of Salina, died Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2003. Services are 2 p.m. Monday at the Ryan Mortuary in Salina. A private family burial will be held in the Gypsum Hill Cemetery in Salina.

He was born July 14, 1922, in El Dorado. He was a school teacher for over 35 years. He taught in Hamilton, Hillsboro, Abilene and Salina. He retired in Salina in May of 1985. He served as a 1st Lieutenant in the Army Air Corps during World War II and during the Korean War.

Survivors include: wife, Roberta J. Sharp of Salina; brother, LeRoy L. Sharp of Great Bend; and sisters, Edith A. Grosse of Hutchinson, Dorothy D. Sharp of Lomita, Calif., and Theda R. Richards of Abilene.

He was preceded in death by a brother, James O. Sharp; and a sister, Minnie M. "Marge" Kell.

Memorials are to Hospice of Salina or the Saline County Animal Shelter.

WYER, JOHN A.

John A. Wyer, 74, of El Dorado, died Friday, Oct. 31, 2003, at Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital. Celebration of life services will be at 3 p.m Saturday, Nov. 8, 2003, at the Kirby-Morris Funeral Home. The Rev. Stan Seymour will officiate.

He was born Nov. 26, 1928, in Kingman, Kan., the son of James and Elsie (Scovill) Wyer. He grew up in the Kingman and Wichita area. He served his country in U.S. Army during World War II as a tank operator. He was united in marriage to Rena Scholl in Wichita on Nov. 22, 1940. He worked for many years for Young's Appliance. He was also the owner and operator of Wyer's Appliance.

Surviving family include his wife, Rena, of the home; three sons, John Wyer of Pratt, and Darrell Wyer and Tim Wyer, both of El Dorado; four daughters, Debra Hood of Aline, Okla., Karen Turner of Towanda, Leanne Harris of Grants, N.M., and Vicci Raisdall of El Dorado; a sister, Juanita Lacy of Valley Center; 15 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, and a grandson.
