HOEFGEN, JACQUELINE
JACQUELINE HOEFGEN'S SPIRIT LIVES ON
It was just a break to visit a fellow cheerleader's boyfriend, a quick ride down the road, short enough for Jacqueline
K. Hoefgen to return in time to urge her beloved Augusta High School to victory in a cross country track meet.
It was the ride that cut short Miss Hoefgen's spirited life, the ride that heavied the hearts of Augusta.
At 4:34 p.m. Monday, a car and a van collided outside Augusta at a rural Butler County intersection. Miss Hoefgen
was a passenger in the car. She was declared dead on arrival at an Augusta hospital. She was 15 years old.
On Tuesday, family, friends and classmates could only shake their heads in bewilderment.
''She was very well-known in the school," said Augusta High School principal James Ashcraft on Tuesday night
of the sophomore and varsity cheerleader. "Kids were really down today. A lot of kids were very close to her.
She had a lot of friends."
So close that a funeral Mass will be said for Miss Hoefgen in the Augusta High School auditorium at 2:15 p.m. Thursday.
So close that when the town learned Monday night of her death, about 100 individuals steadily trickled to the house
of parents John and Donna Hoefgen to share their grief.
''There were kids coming and going and crying," Miss Hoefgen's uncle, Joseph Hoefgen, of Emporia, said Tuesday
afternoon.
Miss Hoefgen was born in Augusta on May 27, 1971, and grew up in Augusta. With her family, she belonged to St.
James Catholic Church and was active in the Catholic Youth Organization chapter. She loved to attend Butler County
Junior College baseball games for which her boyfriend, James Emmitt played. Emmitt said Tuesday: "Jacque had
a very high spirit and couldn't stand to waste time. She was always busy with her friends."
Miss Hoefgen will be buried in her cheerleader's uniform, her uncle said.
She is survived by her parents, a brother, Nick, a sister, Jenny, grandparents Jack and Mary Hoefgen and Myrtle
DeFore, and great-grandmother Anna DeWeese, all of Augusta.
Another sister, Barbara Ann, died at birth in 1967.
A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Wednesday at St. James Catholic Church, Augusta. Memorial contributions in her
name may be made to a scholarship fund for Augusta High School cheerleaders through Citadel Bank of Augusta.
