TALIAFERRO,
CHARLES W.
Charles W. Taliaferro, a pioneer of Glencoe Township, died at his home in Tulsa, Okla., on July 17 after months
of illness from heart trouble and complications. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Tulsa. The funeral
was held July 19, conducted by his pastor, Dr. Storer, followed by interment in Memorial Park.
His daughter, Miss Nora Tailferro, writes to friends under date of July 24, as follows: "No doubt you have
heard of father's passing just one week ago today. He had been in failing health for some time, but not bedfast
until the past two months and even then he would have intervals when he would feel strong enough to come to the
table for breakfast, which was about the only meal he ever ate, and could walk from one room to another. He did
not suffer a great deal up to the last few weeks, seemed just tired and was perfectly easy to lie down and sleep
for hours during the day and most of the time slept through the night without waking. This is the greatest consolation
we have, as we knew from the first there was no help for him and all we could do was to keep him comfortable. His
trouble was a complication of diseases due to his age, but the fatal ailment was a weakening of the valves of the
heart."
Charles W. Taliferro was born in Cooper County, Mo., January 8, 1853, where he grew to manhood. He taught school
several years in Cooper County. He was married to Frances Olivia Young, February 27, 1876, and came to Kansas in
1880. They located on a farm in Glencoe Township, Butler County, where they resided except seven years spent in
Kansas City, until November 1928, when they moved to Tulsa, which has since been their home.
To them were born six children, three of whom are living: walter W. of San Angelo, Texas., Harry of Severy, Kan.,
and Nora of Tulsa. These with their widowed mother survive. In addition one brother, John Taliaferro was the eldest
of a family of eight, three surviving being the youngest. There are also eight grandchildren. "Charley"
Taliaferro was a kind considerate man, revered by his neighbors, prominent in church affairs, and in his community.
Glencoe Township suffered a great loss when he left it. He was one of the best known men in Southeast Butler and
a host of friends will be grieved to learn of his passing. (El Dorado times, Tuesday, July 25, 1935)
