GUM, LILLIAN FLORENCE BURROWS

Lillian Florence Burrows Gum, 86, of Emporia and formerly of El Dorado, passed away Friday, evening May 25, 2007 at the Holiday Resort where she had been a patient since mid-March. Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 2, 2007, at her church the First Church of the Nazarene in Emporia. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday June 2, 2007 at Sunset Lawns Cemetery.

Lillian was the oldest of seven children. She was born May 31, 1920 in Fairfield, Iowa to Rev. Earl Alfred and Alfreda Ruth (Makepeace) Burrows. She graduated from the Centerville High School. She married Virgil Gum on March 21, 1939 in Gravette, Ark. It was there she had been teaching first through third grades at a Bible school. She came to Butler County in the early 1940s. She worked in the housekeeping department at Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital for many years. She loved to square dance with her husband and was extremely involved in crafts of all kinds. She was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene, TOPS of El Dorado and Emporia and Newman Hospital Auxiliary.

Survivors include two sons, Darel and wife Jan of Willow Springs, Mo., Harold and wife Carla of Denver, Colo., two daughters, Patricia Gum and Rita and husband Jim Scribner, both of Emporia, one brother, Wesley Burrows of Kalona, Iowa, one sister, Frances Freeburg of Britt, Iowa, two granddaughters, Cindy Noone and Meridith Lopez, one great-grandson, four great-granddaughters, and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, one son, Jerald, two brothers, two sisters, one grandson and one great-granddaughter.

HABACKER, LOIS M. (COULSON)


Lois M. (Coulson) Habacker, 73, retired J. C. Penney Co., salesclerk, died Thursday, July 6, 1989. Service 10:30 a.m. today, Martin Becker Carlson Funeral Home.

Survivors: son, Warren of Abilene; daughter, Arden Collins of Garland, Texas, sisters, Ester Jones of Abilene, Leona Londeen of El Dorado, four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren. HALE, ALMA (WEALTHALL)

Alma (Wealthall) Hale, 80, of Towanda, retired Hale Appliance Store Owner, died Wednesday, March 29, 1989. Services 10 a.m. Saturday, Kirby-Morris Funeral Home, El Dorado, 2 p.m. Sunnyside Cemetery, Caney.

Survivors, son, Ed, daughter, Jacqueline Allmond, both of Towanda; brother, William Wealthall of Caney, 11 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren. Memorial has been established with the Towanda Public Library. (Butler County News, March 31, 1989)

HAMMAN, ANNA A.

Anna A. Hamman, 102 of Eureka, died Sunday, December 17, 1995 at Prairie Hills Health Care.

She was born April 2, 1893, at Owingsville, Ky., the daughter of Charles L. and Margaret A. (Jones) Whittington.

She moved to Reading in 1911. On September 17, 1912, Anna was united in marriage to George W. Hamman at Lebo. He preceded her in death in 1958.

They farmed in Lebo until 1923, when they moved to Madison. She remained in Madison until 1959, when she returned to Reading and worked at Newman Memorial Hospital in Emporia in the linen department. She retired in 1971.

She was a member of the First Christian Church of Emporia.

Survivors include her daughter, Margaret Edwards of El Dorado, brother, Tom Whittington of Carmi, Ill., sisters, Lida Miller of Boulder, Colo., and Artie Ford of Emporia, seven grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, nine great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and a son, Neil Hamman in 1979.

Funeral services were held December 20 at the Jones Crable Funeral Home in Lebo. Interment followed in the Lincoln Cemetery at Lebo.

HARROD, WANDA L.

Wanda L. Harrod, 66, of El Dorado, homemaker, died Sunday, April 2, 1989. Service 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. Kirby Morris Funeral Home.

HARVEY, JAMES K.

James K. Harvey, age 82, of Webb City, Mo., and formerly of El Dorado, died Friday afternoon, July 28, 1989, at Webb City. Graveside service: 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sunset Lawns Cemetery.

Mr. Harvey was born Nov. 8, 1906 in Potwin, son of G. W. and Nettie (BVentz) Harvey. He married Alta Florence Essex, Feb. 15, 1933. She died in 1971. He was a lifelong resident of El Dorado until 1986, when he moved to Webb City. He was a charter member of the El Dorado Moose Lodge.

Survivors include one son, James of Clyde, N.C. three daughters, Rhoda Hodges of Cassoday, Patricia Lamphier of Citrus Grove, Calif., Pamela Wilshire of St. Louis, Mo., three brothers, Fred Harvey and Ben Harvey both of Potwin, Thgeodore Harvey of El Dorado, one sister, Rhoda Potts of Dennison, Texas, 11 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren.

HEAD, DELMAR KEITH

Delmar Keith Head, age 64, El Dorado, died Wednesday, at St. Francis Regional Medical Center, Wichita. Service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Carlson's Colonial Chapel. Burial services will be at Farmington, Mo.

Delmar was born July 16, 1924, at Ste. Genevieve, Co., Mo., the son of James Cheslie and Edith Martin Head. On June 13, 1964, he married Florance Ella Miles in Las Vegas, Nev., she survives. He had been a truck driver and had lived in El Dorado for 16 years.

Survivors in addition to his wife include three step-sons, Robert E. Wood of El Dorado, Dennis G. Wood of Topeka, and William O. Miles of Little Rock, Ark., two step-daughters, Winona Raleigh of Wichita, and Clara I. Turpin of Fallon, Nev., his mother, Edith Head of Farmington, Mo., five sisters, Dorothy Boyd, Ruby Bloom, Jean Jenkerson, all of Farmington, Mo., Alma Winch, Ste. Genevieve, Mo., and June Stone, Jackson, Mo. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

HEARNE, MARY E.

Mary E. Hearne, 93, of Latham, died Thursday afternoon, June 29, 1989 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday at the United Methodist Chuch in Latham. Burial will follow the services in the Latham Cemetery.

Mrs. Hearne was born Feb. 10, 1896 in Sipe Springs, Texas, the daughter of Warren A. and Blanche V. (Crump) Rice. She had lived in the Latham area for 69 years, coming there from Odessa, Texas.

She was married to George Hearne, who preceded her in death. She was an active member in the Latham United Methodist Church, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a member of the Royal Neighbors of America.

Surviving family include two sons, Ralph Hearne of Latham and Warren A. Hearne of Bucklin; one daughter, Mary Louise Bing of Wichita, two brothers, Melvin Rice of Oklahoma City and Warren Rice of Ft. Smith, Ark., one sister Estelle Taylor of Clarksville, Ark., and seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

HEATH, BENNY

Benny Heath of Sumner, Washington, a former resident of Madison, died Friday, March 24, 1989. He was the son of the late Albert and Gladys Heath.

HERMAN, WILLIAM "BILL" ANTHONY

William "Bill" Anthony Herman, age 31, a resident of Hays, died Friday, July 14, south of Victoria. Services were 10 a.m. today at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Gorham. Burial followed at St. Mary's Cemetery, Gorham.

Mr. Herman was born May 11, 1958 at Hays, the son of Henry E. and Bertha (Dreiing) Herman. On February 19, 1982, he married Katherine Schuckman in Denver, Colo.

He was employed by SOHIO Oil Company as a pumper for 7 years, was a graduate of Gorham High School and attended Barton County Community College and Fort Hays State College. He was a member of Immacualate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Hays and the Knights of Columbus in Gorham.

Survivors include his wife, Katherine and two daughters, Jessica and Ashley of the home, 3 brothers, Jerry Herman, El Dorado, Roger Herman, Russell, Chris Herman, Dallas, Texas and 1 sister, Eileen Brungardt, Victoria.

HEYMAN, LESTER "BUD"

Lester "Bud" Heyman, 83, of Burns, died Monday, July 31, 1995 at his home. Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church, Burns, with Rev. Eugene Wilson officiating. Burial will be in Burns Cemetery.

He was born Dec. 7, 1911 in rural Burns, the son of George and Katheryn Schwartz Heyman, and lived in the Burns area all his life. On Oct. 7, 1929, he and Mildred McIntosh were married in Marion. He was a barber in Burns for 26 years and later worked as an oilfield pumper, retiring in 1994.

Survivors include: wife, Mildred, son, Jack of Springfield, Mo., daughter, Betty Scully of Oak Grove, Mo., brothers, Fred, George, both of California, sisters, Charlotte Mosier of Arizona, Edith Ward of Utah, seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren. (El Dorado Times, Aug. 2, 1995)

HUFFMAN, GLADYS M.

Gladys M. Huffman, age 78 of El Dorado, died early Monday morning June 5, 1989, at Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital. Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Carlson's Colonial Chapel. Burial will follow at Sunset Lawns Cemetery.

Mrs. Huffman was born Nov. 21, 1910 at Valley Center, the daughter of Benjamin F. and Ada I. Burright Prewitt. She worked for Cities Service at Oil Hill as a telephone operator. She was a member of the First Baptist Church.

Mrs. Huffman grew up in the Cassoday area, and then lived at Oil Hill until 1956, when she moved to El Dorado.

She married George Vincil Huffman at El Dorado, March 22, 1930. He preceded her in death, Aug. 22, 1982.

Survivors include one son, Gary of Salida, Colo., three brothers, Glenn Prewitt of Burns, Guy Prewitt of El Dorado, Paul Prewitt of Daly City, Calif., two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one sister. (Butler County News, June 5, 1989)

HURLBURT, A. MARIE

A. Marie Hurlburt, 91, of Augusta, died Sunday, July 9, 1995 at the Augusta Medical Complex. Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Carlson Funeral Home. Burial will be in Sunset Lawns Cemetery.

She was born Nov. 26, 1903, in Leon the daughter of Maynard and Nora Parker Barrett. She had worked for Boeing, Wichita for several years and was a member of the V. F. W. Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary, Rebekah Lodge and the G. A. R.

On June 3, 1922, she and Oakley E. Hurlburt were married in El Dorado. He died Jan. 5, 1977.

Survivors include: sons, Bob, John, both of El Dorado, daughters, Dorothy Binter, Eloise Day, both of Augusta, Kathryn Siegrist of Rose Hill, 20 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren. JONES, JANICE ANN

SCHOFFSTALL, JEROME "JERRY" R.

Jerome "Jerry" R. Schoffstall, 78, of El Dorado, died Monday evening, Jan. 24, 1994 at Susan B. Allen Hospital. Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at Grace Lutheran Church. Burial will be in the Towanda Cemetery.

He was born Sept. 15, 1915, in Minersville, PA., the son of John Franklin and Sadie Cordelia (Barton) Schoffstall. He attended school in Pennsylvania. After graduating from high school, he worked for Primrose Coal Company and Rothermills Dairy. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII.

On July 12, 1941, he and Anna Fekette were married in Minersville. In 1943 he moved to El Dorado and worked for Skelly Oil Company until retiring in 1980. His memberships included Grace Lutheran Church, Lions Club, Senior Citizens Center, Skelly Retirees and for many years had served as a Scoutmaster.

Survivors include: wife, Anna, sons, LeRoy of Minot, N.D., John, David, both of El Dorado, Phillip of Anchorage, Alaska, daughter, Barbara Minix of Calhan, Colo., 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

SCHRADER, HERBERT M.

Herbert M. Schrader, 88, of El Dorado, died Saturday, July 23, 1994 at Susan B. Allen Hospital. Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at Prospect Baptist Church with Rev. Rick Harms officiating. Burial will be in Walnut Valley Memorial Park.

He was born July 17, 1906, in Otterville, Mo., the son of John Albert and Elizabeth Phillipine Yost Schrader. He lived in El Dorado for 11 years. He was a partner in Schrader Construction Company retiring in 1976. He was a member of the Prospect Baptist Church.

On July 16, 1964, he and Betty Lou Turner were married in Boulder, Colo.

Survivors include wife, Betty Lou, son Herbert Jr. of Rosalia, daughter, Helen Galyon of Valley Center, Sally Shields of Brady, Texas, Cecillia Schrader of Rosalia, Rose Robinson of El Dorado, sisters, Marie Doll, Irene Schrader, both of Wichita, 21 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, one-great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, two daughters, eight brothers, one granddaughter and two great-grandchildren.

WHITE, KAREN S.

Karen S. White, 62, of Phoenix, Ariz., passed away on Jan. 6, 2007 at the Chapel of the Chimes Mortuary in Glendale, Ariz. Cremation has taken place. Graveside memorial services will be held 2 p.m. Friday June 1, 2007 at Cambridge Cemetery.

Survivors include: mother, Gladys White; sister, Becky Stone, nieces, Teresa McMahon and husband Jim and Belinda Witter and husband Paul, nephew, Mark White and many great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Fred White and a brother, Ernest Lee White.

CARLISLE, GLYN R.

A Potwin father, Glynn R. Carlisle, 27, drowned in a farm pond south of Potwin yesterday afternoon while trying to save his two sons after a boating accident.

Carlisle and his sons, Ray, 5 and Joe, 3, were thrown from an outboard motor boat while making a sharp turn on a pond at the Harris Houston farm three miles south of Potwin. The boys, who were wearing life jackets, were pulled from the lake by Mariner Pierce, of Potwin, who used an inner tube to assist him in reaching them. Pierce cannot swim.

The accident occurred about 2:40 p.m. during an outing by the Pierce and Carlisle families at the pond. Another son, Arthur Roy, age nine months and Mrs. Carisle were on the shore at the time.

Carlisle's body was found at 7:50 p.m. by Raymond Tarrant, of El Dorado who was helping drag the pond bottom within a few feet of the accident site. The body was recovered from an estimated nine feet of water after a five-hour search.

Capt. Frank Manion and Fireman Al Ellis of El Dorado took a fire truck and rescue equipment to the scene shortly before 3 p.m. They were joined later in the evening by Tarrant and Fire Chief Don Rayburn, who took lighting equipment to the pond about 7 o'clock. Firemen from Potwin and Augusta, Sheriff Ercel Reed, Undersheriff Harold Edwards, and Deputies Dallas Babcock and Bill Whiteside and several other citizens joined in the search to find Carlisle's body. Skin divers were called from Wichita but the body was recovered before they arrived.

At one time an estimated 200 persons watched the search from the shores of the pond. Carlisle's death is the fifth from drowning in Butler County this year, and the third in the past two weeks.

Mr. Carlisle was born at El Dorado, July 17, 1930 and was graduated from high school here. He had been employed as an electrical appliance repairman by Al Resnik company, Potwin, for several years.

He married the former Miss Vivian Lewis here on March 17, 1951. She survives.

He also leaves three sons, Ray, George and Arthur Carlisle of the home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Carlisle, Towanda; two brothers, Lynn Carlisle and George Carlisle, Santa Monica, Calif., and a sister, Mrs. Irma Mullin, Augusta.

EBERHARD, JOHN HERMAN

John Herman Eberhard, 90, who died April 5 in Allen Memorial Hospital, lived in Whitewater 60 years before coming to the Little Sisters of the Poor Home in El Dorado in February 1967.

He was born February 28, 1878 at Chilton, Wisc., third in a family of 13 children, and came to Kansas from scribner, Nebr. He was married Lizzie Knust November 20, 1900. For a time they lived on a farm in the Elbing community, moving to Whitewater in 1908. There Mr. Eberhard engaged in real estate business. Later, he sold automobiles threshing machines and other farm machinery. During World War II, he was with Beech Aircraft and after retirement worked as a plumber.

Mr. Eberhard was a member of the Federated Church of Whitewater and was active in church and civic affairs.

Surviving are Mrs. Eberhard who lives at the Little Sisters of the Poor home, a son and two daughters, Rollan Eberhard and Mrs. Florence Gruhn of Whitewater and Mrs. Katherine Worline of Wichita, two brothers, and four sisters, George Cordova, Md., Henry of Preston, Md., Mrs. Ann Swartz, Mrs. Bertha Hunteman and Mrs. Clara Willis, all of Easton, Md. and Mrs. Ella McPheeters of Peabody. There are five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services were held Sunday in the Whitewater Federated Church, the Rev. Alfred Bartter officiating. John Lockwood sang "How Great Thou Art," and "The Lord's Prayer." Mrs. Sam Ravenscraft was the organist and Mrs. Wayne Brainerd the pianist. The casket bearers were Charles Eberhard, Paul E. Eberhard, Ivan McPheeters, Frank gronau, William McPheeters and Henry Gronau. Interment was in Whitewater Cemetery. The Lamb Mortuary was in charge of arrangements. (El Dorado Times, April 11, 1968)

HESS, GEORGE R.

George R. Hess, 51, a resident of Towanda area since 1918, and postmaster at Towanda for the past five years, died Wednesday night, March 27, at Allen Memorial Hospital in El Dorado after a long illness.

Mr. Hess was born near Scott City, Kansas. On February 9, 1917, and came to the Midian community his parents a year later. He attended the Midian schools, graduated from Midian High school, and attended junior college in El Dorado.

He was married to Winifred Bigelow at Hattiesburg, Mississippi, on May 18, 1943 and to this union two children were born, a daughter, Becky and a son, Sam. Prior to 1962 he was employed at the Mobil Oil Corp. refinery at Augusta for ten years, then served as custodian at the Circle High School before becoming Postmaster at Towanda in 1963.

A veteran of World War II, Mr. Hess was a member and past commander of the Benton VFW Post 9735; a member of the National Association of Postmasters, and of the Towanda Methodist church. He also served as a member of the Towanda City Council.

Surviving are his wife; children, Sam and Becky, both of the home; his father, Earl O. Hess, of Towanda, and a sister, Mrs. Keith Miller of Towanda.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon at the Towanda Methodist Church with the Rev. L. D. Payton officiating.

Ushers were Raymond Gray and Jack McKinney. Casket bearers were Joe H. Hayes, Joe Stephenson, Fred C. Smith, Virgil McCune, William H. Guthrie, and Calvin B. Miller. Burial was in the Towanda cemetery with military rites by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9735 of Benton. Flag folders were Delmar L. Marley and Leon Hampton. Armed escorts were Delbert Shaffer, and William Miller. Color guards were Jim Maish and Jim Bemiss. Attending in a group were members of the VFW Auxiliary. (El Dorado Times, April 4, 1968)

RUTSCHMAN, JOHN ALBERT

John Albert Rutschman, 88, of Whitewater, died Tuesday at a Newton hospital following an illness of two years.

Mr. Rutschman moved in June 1967, from Potwin to Whitewater. He was born Nov. 11, 1879, in Missouri. He and Mary Roth were married Feb. 2, 1909. She died in 1918. Mr. Rutschman and Freda Wiens were married June 6, 1923.

He was a member of the Swiss Mennonite Church of Whitewater.

Survivors include the widow, Freda; two daughters, Mrs. Lillian Brenden, Silverton, Ore., and Miss Vivian Rutschman, Wichita, four sons, Paul, Denver, Johnny, Fresno, Calif., Clarence, Taylor, Mich., and Arthur, Bakersfield, Calif., four sisters, Mrs. Mary Zuercher, Hutchinson, Mrs. Della Roth, Whitewater, Route 1, Mrs. Minnie Roth, Whitewater, and Mrs. Elma Schrag, Pretty Prairie, Kan., four brothers, Will, Salem, Ore., Dave, Fred and Harry all of Newton, 12 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at the Swiss Mennonite Church, with the Rev. Ted Roth and the Rev. Arnold Ensz officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery at Whitewater. (El Dorado Times, April 10, 1968)

John Losh Dies at Age of 91

John Losh, who was blieved to have been the oldest resident of Butler County, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Gus Winter, of Augusta, Thursday night, at the age of 93 years. He had been in ill health for a number of months.

Mr. Losh was born in Virginia, in March, 1831. Mrs. Winters is the only surviving child. Mrs. Losh died 37 years ago.

Funeral services were held this morning at the Winters home. Burial was made in Custer Cemetery. (El Dorado Times, Page Three, Saturday, January 13, 1923)

BARR, FLORENCE E.

Mrs. Florence E. Barr, 71, of lifelong resident of El Dorado, died Wednesday morning at Osawatomie. She had been in failing health for the past year and a half.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Dietz-Pittman Colonial Chapel, with Dr. Joe Riley Burns, pastor of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Lawns Cemetery.

Mrs. Barr was born at El Dorado on Feb. 22, 1897, and was married to the late Harry L. Barr Sr., at El Dorado on Nov. 9, 1917. He died in September, 1961. She was a member of the First United Methodist church.

Surviving are three sons, Harry L. Barr, Jr., of Tulsa, Okla., Jack R. Barr of Paris, France, and William E. Barr, of Anaheim, Calif., a daughter Mrs. Robert E. Rutter of Klamath Falls, Ore., and five grandchildren.

The casket will not be opened at the services but friends may call at the funeral home from Friday afternoon until the time of the service. (El Dorado Times, Nov. 21, 1968)

BILES, M. L. MRS.

Mrs. M. L. Biles, 78, of 625 North Atchison street, died this morning at Allen Memorial Hospital after being in failing health for the past year.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Dietz-Pittman Colonial Chapel, with Dr. Joe Riley Burns, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Walnut Valley Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Biles had lived in El Dorado since 1917. Born at Lead Hill, Ark., on Sept. 16, 1889, she was married to the late M. L. Biles at Tucumcari, N.M. on Nov. 29, 1908. Mr. Biles died on July 1, 1962.

Mrs. Biles was a member of the First United Methodist Church and of the Woman's Society of Christian Service.

Surviving are six sons, Oren M. Biles of El Dorado, Route 3, Ralph F. Biles of 625 North Atchison, William V. Biles of 1336 Crescent Drive, Alfred A. Biles of Pine Bluff, Ark., Arlie G. Biles and M. R. (Bob) Biles, both of Wichita, four daughters, Mrs. Ralph Palmer and Mrs. Joseph Bulger, both of Wichita, Mrs. W. E. Burbank Jr., of Wesport, Ore., and Mrs. Morris Long of Santa Fe, N. M., three sisters, Mrs. Alfred Hendryx of Skiatook, Olka., Mrs. Albert McConnell of Carnegie, Okla. There are 37 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. (El Dorado Times, Sept. 11, 1968)

BELK, FRED R. MRS.

Mrs. Fred R. Belk, 69, of 1227 Towanda avenue, died Suddenly morning at Waynesville, MO.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Kirby Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. C. M. Nutter, staff member at the First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Walnut Valley Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Belk was born at Springfield, Mo., on Sept. 1, 1899, and was married to Mr. Belk at Joplin, Mo., on March 22, 1920. She had lived in El Dorado since 1920 coming here from Kansas City.

Mrs. Belk was a member of the First United Methodist church of Circle 8, Woman's Society of Christian Service, of the American Legion Auxiliary; of the Skelly Retirees club, of Veterans of World War I Barracks, and of the Mothers Art Extension Homemakers unit.

Mrs. Belk was employed at the Butler County News for 10 years prior to 1958.

Surviving are her husband, a son, Homer Belk of Sprinfield and two grandchildren. (El Dorado Times, Sept. 10, 1968)

BROWN, HARVEY H.

Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence E. Brown, 426 North Orchard, have returned from Parkersburg, W. VA., where they attended the funeral of Mr. Brown's father, Harvey H. Brown, who died April 1, at the Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital in Parkersburg.

Mass was celebrated Thursday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Vienna, with the Rev. Joseph Wanstreet, a nephew, and the Rev. James Murphy, pastor, as con-celebrants. Burial was in Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Parkersburg.

Mr. Brown was born at St. Clara, W. Va., the only son of the late Joseph and Ella Charter Brown. He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church at Vienna, W. Va., and was retired from the Columbia Gas Transmission Corporation.

He is survived by two sons, Lawrence E., of El Dorado and Joseph D. of Clarksburg; three daughters, Mrs. Helena Schaffer of Vienna, Sister Mary Brown of Wheeling, W. Va., and Mrs. Pauline Schaffer of Vienna; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ella E. Brown, in 1977, and a sister. (El Dorado Times, April 9, 1979)

BURNER, ADALINE MAY

Mrs. Adaline May Burner, 86, of Latham, died late Friday at Allen Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at the Latham Christian Church. Burial will be in Sunset Lawns Cemetery in El Dorado. Miles Funeral Home, Burden, Kan., is in charge.

Mrs. Burner was born March 23, 1882, in El Dorado. She was the daughter of Jasper and Martha Harshman.

She and Oscar Greene Burner, were married Jan. 4, 1904, in El Dorado. Mr. Burner died Oct. 10, 1934.

Mrs. Burner was a member of the Latham Christian Church.

Survivors include two sons, Bruce O. Burner and Robert Milton Burner, both of Latham, four daughters, Mrs. Stanley Haring, El Dorado, Mrs. W. C. Beckham, Enid, Okla., Mrs. Susan Beckham, Latham and Mrs. Roy Moore, Eureka, 18 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. (El Dorado Times, Sept. 21, 1965)

BURGER, NELLIE MAE

Services were held Saturday in the Kirby Funeral Home Chapel for Mrs. Nellie Mae Burger, 1214 West Central. The Rev. C. M. Nutter, staff member of the First United Methodist Church, officiated. Mrs. H. W. Bullerdiek, played organ selections. The casket bearers were Michael Cook, Henry Bernard, Kevin Cook, Patrick Cook, Gene Bennington and Estel Bogart. Interment was in Sunset Lawns.

A resident of El Dorado most of her life, Mrs. Burger was born March 29, 1888 in Bentonville, Ark., a daughter of Charles Williams and Geneva (Lucas) Wilson and was married February 22, 1920 to Carl Henry Burger. His death occurred January 6, 1960.

Mrs. Burger who graduated from El Dorado High School in 1907, taught in Butler County rural schools eight years and in Jefferson School in El Dorado two years.

She was a member of the El Dorado First United Methodist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Ginevra Baldridge of Wichita, two sisters, Miss Ruth Wilson of Wichita and Mrs. Pearl Drake, Winfield, and four grandchildren, Mrs. Sylvia Cook, 1314 West Central, El Dorado, Estel Bogart, David and Carl Baldridge of Wichita. CALDWELL, ROSCOE J.

Roscoe J. Caldwell, 68, of Chase, a retired oil field worker and custodian, died Thursday.

Services were to have been held today at the Sillin-Crawford-Miller Funeral Home at Lyons.

Survivors are his wife, Ruth; a son, Larry of Wichita; a daughter, Mrs. Marsha Vincent of Tulsa, a brother, Elmer of Santa Rosa, Calif., and four sisters, Mrs. Ada Coldwater of Elmwood, Ill., Mrs. Gladys Coldwater and Mrs. Zella McFarland, both of Hutchinson, and Mrs. Helen Taylor of El Dorado.

Final rites for Mrs. Fannie Call, 82, of 1107 West Second, who died here Friday, were held Monday afternoon at the Dietz-Pittman Colonial Chapel.

Mrs. Ronald Biggs sang "The Old Rugged Cross," and "The Lord's Prayer." Mrs. Amos Marsh was the organist.

Casket bearers included Robert Call, Ira Call, Ralph Morris, Bruce Langton, Arthur Lawhon and Henry Nearhood.

CALL, JOSPEH H.

Joseph H. Call, 78, of 607 N. Orchard, died Wednesday evening at Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital. Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Carlson Funeral Home. Cremation will follow the service.

He was born March 7, 1905, near Rosalia, the son of Joseph H. and Frances Morris Call. He spent most of his life in Butler County except for 10 years during his childhood when he lived in Marshall, Mo. He worked for Cities Service as a field repairman until retiring in 1966. He was a member of the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers union. On February 17, 1926, he married Zona Lulu Nearhood. She preceded him in death in 1965.

Surviving are: sons, Richard A., and Robert D., each of El Dorado; sister Ellen Wilson of El Dorado, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, and an infant son.

CAMERON, LUCY E.

Mrs. Lucy E. Cameron, 86, died Thursday at the Woodlawn Nursing Center at Wichita.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Dietz-Carlson Colonial Chapel with burial in the Leon Cemetery.

Mrs. Carmeron was born Jan. 19, 1893, at Leon, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William McCullough. She spent most of her life in Butler County. On Feb. 14, 1916, she married Elmer Donald Cameron at Wichita and he died Jan. 12, 1964. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Lloyd W. of Wichita, Thomas E., of Route 3, El Dorado, a sister, Sarah Woodward, Ellsworth, two grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.

CAYWOOD, ZELLA

Zella Caywood, 77, of 704 South High died Monday evening at Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Kirby Morris Funeral Home Chapel with burial in the Sunset Lawns Cemetery.

Mrs. Caywood was born July 15, 1901 at Lipan, Texas, the daughter of Allen and Mary Ada Pinson Sweek. On feb. 26, 1920 she married William H. Caywood at Graham, Texas, and he died in 1962. She had lived in the El Dorado area for 53 years and was a member of the Park Avenue Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. William (Maxine) Maxwell of Edmonds, Wash., a step-daughter, Mrs. Betty Platts of El Dorado, a sister, Mrs. Zara Brown of El Dorado, four brothers, Floyd Sweek of El Dorado, Lloyd Sweek of Wichita, Darrell Sweek of Fort Worth, Texas, and Kenneth Sweek of Cheyenne, Wy., six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

CONDER, WILLIAM LLOYD

William Lloyd Conder, 79, of 303 Hillside, died Saturday evening at Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Richland Cemetery near Douglass. Dr. Joe Riley Burns will officiate at the services.

Mr. Conder was born in Butler County, the son of John Loyd and Marilla Jane Bare Conder, on March 21, 1906. On Aug. 28, 1927, he was married to Shelia Holcomb. She preceded him in death in May 31, 1962.

In 1937 they moved to the Oil Hill community and in 1958 moved to the present address in El Dorado. He was formerly employed by Cities Service Oil Co., as its communications specialist and retired in 1970. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Cities Service Retirees Club.

Survivors include one brother, John Conder, of Farmington, N.M., five sisters, Verda Getchel of Bradford, Penn., Margaret Newman of Ellinwood, Kan., and Fern Reser, Ruth Adams and Louida Stafford, all of Douglass, and a number of nieces and nephews.

COOLEY, MARY K.

Mary K. Cooley, 60 of 1104 North Taylor, died Saturday at Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Kirby Morris Funeral Home with burial in the Benton Cemetery.

Mrs. Cooley was born Nov. 2, 1918, near Benton, the daughter of Ruby C. and Jenny Condell Reed. On May 8, 1938, she married Art Cooley. She had lived in the Butler County area all her life. She was self-employed as a private nurse and was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband of the home, three daughters, Mrs. Rex (Joan) McDaniel of Cherokee, Okla., Mrs. John (Jan) Lister and Mrs. Galen (Connie) Johnson, both of El Dorado, a sister, Mrs. Doris Holt of Wichita, two brothers, Wilbur C. Reed of Benton and Ercel Reed of Towanda and six grandchildren.

CORFMAN, ROBERT N.

Memorial services for Robert N. Corfman, 42, who died Monday in the hospital at Martinez, Calif., will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Kirby Morris Funeral Home.

Mr. Corfman was born Nov. 3, 1936, in Chase County, the son of Walter and Margaret Corfman. In 1961 he married Janice Abbuhl in California. He was a graduate of Wichita East High School and Wichita State University. He had taught high school English in California for a number of years. He was a member of the Mt. Vernon Presbyterian Church and the California Teachers Association.

Services for Mrs. Jessie D. Cron, 83, of Mulvane, who died Monday, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Mulvane Church of Christ. Burial will be in Mulvane Cemetery.

Born Feb. 28, 1881, in the Red Bud Community east of Mulvane, Mrs. Cron moved to Mulvane in 1947 from Wichita.

CRONK, JAMES O.

James O. Cronk, 63 year old life time El Doradoan died Friday night in a Wichita hospital.

Mr. Cronk was employed in the oil fields as a truck driver by the Whitlock Trucking company for many years and retired in 1962.

He was a veteran of World War II. He was born in El Dorado, Dec. 2, 1900.

Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Sarah Saule, of Eureka, and Mrs. Nan Guwell, Humbolt, Kan., and one brother, C. L. Cronk, Route 2.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Kirby Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Leon Hayen, pastor of Trinity Evangelical United Brethern Church will officiate.

Final Rites for James O. Cronk, 63 year old lifetime El Doradoan who died Friday at Wichita, were held Tuesday afternoon at the Kirby Funeral Home Chapel.

The Rev. Leon Hayen, pastor of Trinity Evangelical United Brethern Church was the officiant.

Casket bearers included John Cronk, Russell Sluss, Jr., Lee Dennis, Jerry Soule, Dick Soule, and Vernon Talkington.

Terry Cloyes sang "Going Down the Valley," and "Crossing the Barr." The organist was Mrs. H. W. Bullerdick.

CRONK, WILLIAM RAY

Death came Saturday night about 10 o'clock at Winfield to William Ray Cronk, 69, who had been connected with the Exchange State Bank of Douglass for 47 years. He had been cashier of the bank for quite a number of years. He was the third Douglass businessman to pass away in the last month. He suffered from cancer.

Ray was born at Douglass July 16, 1894, the son of John Allison and Emma Petty Cronk. He grew up here and graduated from high school; then took a place in the bank, and has been there since. His brother, Leonard, who also was associated with the bank for about the same number of years, died July 16, 1961.

Ray was married to Zadah Cramer on May 15, 1917. She passed away April 6, 1960.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Elva) Glaves, of Gallup, New Mexico, who, with her family, has been visiting here; and Mrs. Dean (Virginia) DeFore of Winfield; a sister, Mrs. Mabel Farnsworth of Douglass, three granddaughters, Sharon and Charlotte DeFore of Winfield, and Janice Glaves of Gallup, N.M.

Ray has been active for many years in civic, religious and community affairs. He had been president and treasurer of the C of C, mayor of Douglass, treasurer of the Masonic Lodge and Easter Star, member of the Butler County Bankers Association and member of the Methodist Church. He was a partner in the Cronk Bros. Insurance Co.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. from the Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. Paul Hansen. Burial was in Douglass cemetery, in charge of Hilyard Funeral Home.

CROOKS, LYNN O.

Lynn O. Crooks, 65, a former El Dorado resident, died Wednesday in Seattle after a lengthy illness.

The body is to be cremated. A memorial service is to be held Saturday at First Baptist Church of Seattle.

Surviving are: wife, Barbara, sons, Christopher and Richard of Seattle, sister, Evelyn Graves, of Anthony, Kan. A memorial has been established with the American Lung Association. (El Dorado Times, April 21, 1983)

CROSS, JOHN W.

A 70 year old Kansas man drowned Wednesday while fishing in a coal pit near Clinton, the Missouri Water patrol said.

The victim was identified as John W. Cross of Leavenworth, Kan. His body was recovered by patrolmen and Henry County sheriff's deputies about 4:30 p.m.

The patrol said Cross apparently fell out of his boat. The temperature of the water was about 45 degrees, and Cross was wearing heavy clothing, both of which probably hampered his swimming, the patrol said.

The accident occurred between 11 a.m. and noon at a Peabody Coal Co. pit five miles west of Clinton, which is about 40 miles southeast of Kansas City. (El Dorado Times, March 24, 1983)

CROWLEY, WINONA MAY

Winona May Crowley, 79, of Augusta, died Thursday, March 21, at the Augusta Medical Complex. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Dunsford Funeral Home in Augusta. Burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery in Augusta.

She was born June 2, 1905 at Rosalia to Charles and Pearl Larson Cook. She was married Sept. 5, 1925 at Newton to John Richard Crowley who preceded her in death in November 1978. She belonged to the Eastern Star, Soroptomist and the Christian Church.

She is survived by two sons, Bob of Leon, Buzz of Midland, Texas; one sister, Hazel Carter of Wichita and nine grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

One grandson, Brent, also preceded her in death in March 1985.

CURRY, SARAH BANFILL

Graveside services for Mrs. Sarah Banfill Curry, 82, former Douglass resident, who died last Friday at Kalamazoo, Michigan, were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Douglass Cemetery. Rev. Paul Hansen, Methodist pastor, conducted the services.

She was born December 30, 1881, in Butler County, Kansas. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Banfill of Douglass. She married George W. Curry at Atlanta, Kansas.

Survivors include two daughters, Goldie Griffith and Lucille Buske, both of Friona, Texas., and two sons, George Curry of Warsaw, Ind., and Harold Curry of Happy Camp, Calif., a brother, Robert Banfill of Douglass and five grandchildren.

Mrs. Stephen L. Scott who resied approximately 1-1/2 miles east of EL Dorado died here this morning. She was 23 years old.

Mrs. Scott had been ill with pneumonia but apparently was recovering when she became suddenly ill early this morning. Death occurred within a short time.

The young El Dorado woman had resided in the El Dorado Community for the past five years and prior to that time at Chelsa Township where she was born and attended school. She was born on November 18, 1913 and was married at Wichita on April 3, 1930. She is survived by her husband, a son Lloyd Murray aged 2 years, a daughter, Ethel Mae, 4, her parents Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Garabrandt Route 3, El Dorado, a brother Kenneth Garabrandt, Route 3 and a sister Mrs. Hazel Bishop also of Route 3.

Funeral services will be held at the Byrd Funeral Home tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 with Rev. J. W. Abel, pastor of the Methodist Church officiating. (El Dorado Times, April 30, 1936)

Scott Funeral Held Yesterday

Funeral services for Mrs. Stephen L. Scott who died here Thursday were held at the Byrd Funeral Home yesterday afternoon with Rev. J. W. Abel, pastor of the Methodist Church officiating. A large group of friends and relatives paid final respects to the El Dorado woman.

Mrs. Roy Morris played and sang "City Four Square", "In the Garden", and "When they Ring Those Golden Bells." Pallbearers were: V. B. Miller, Ralph Haddux, Roscoe Phillips, Lester Baggett, Pedro Hauracha and Floyd Poorman. The body was taken to Chelsea, Mrs. Scott's former home for interment. Mrs. Scott resided at the rock quarry, two miles east of El Dorado. (El Dorado Times, May 21, 1936)

WILLIAMS, DOW

Dow Williams, 69, a highly popular figure in El Dorado of forty years ago died Thursday morning July 18 at his home in Aurora, Missouri. He had suffered a stroke several months ago and had been in ailing health ever since.

Mr. Williams joined the Skelly Oil company before it had attained its present name and when it was still known as the Midland Refining company. He was brought to El Dorado by the late Al Winn - also a popular Skelly executive - and stationed in the company's traffic department.

He was a skilled stenographer, which aided his rise in the Skelly working ranks. His quiet, clam manner and the undoubted ability he revealed enabled him to emerge on the executive level.

He was assistant secretary of the Skelly Oil company for many years.

When the Skelly's business offices in El Dorado were abandoned in 1921, Mr. Williams went with that part of the force which was transferred to Kansas city. There he worked for the company the rest of his active life. He was held on a couple of years after reaching retirement age, because of the valuable nature of his contributions.

He was a charter member of the Kiwanis club formed here in 1921.

His activity in this community was related to an array of civic affairs in which he proved influential.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Dewey England, who lives in Missouri, four grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Marsh Funeral Home in Aurora, Mo. graveside rites will be conducted at the Mount Muncie cemetery near Lansing, Kan. at 10 a.m. Monday. (El Dorado Times, July 19, 1963)

WALDORF, MORRIS J.

Morris J. Waldorf, 76, of 640 Hunton, died this morning at Allen Memorial Hospital following a lengthy illness.

Mr. Waldorf had lived in El Dorado since May 9 of this year and had previously resided here from 1900 to 1936. During that time he was a farmer and a rural mail carrier.

He had lived at San Benito, Tex. More than 20 years before moving here. While in Texas he was employed by Cameron County as a supervisor of typhus and malaria control prior to his retirement Jan. 1, 1963. He also lived at Laferia, Tex. for six years.

Mr. Waldorf was a member of the Modern woodmen of America.

He was born Aug. 12, 1886 at Mound Ridge, Kan., and was married to Grace C. Barrick, Feb. 14, 1907 at El Dorado.

Survivors include the widow of the home; two sons, Gradyen R., 632 Hunton and Morris, Jr., Beaufort, S.C., three sisters, Mrs. Gus Benjamin, Grand Junction, Colo., Mrs. E. C. Batman, Elk City, Kan., and Mrs. O. A. Malcolm, Arkansas City, Kan.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. from the Kirby Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Kenneth E. Garrison, pastor of the First Christian church will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Lawns Cemetery. (El Dorado times, July 18, 1963)

Services for Morris J. Waldorf, 640 Hunton, who died Thursday, July 18, in Allen Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness, were held Saturday at the Kirby Funeral Home, the Rev. Kenneth E. Garrison officiating. William C. Lange and Antone Godding were the musicians. The casket bearers were Claude L. Wilson, Charles E. Kreisel, John S. Boyer and James R. Boyer. Interment was in Sunset Lawns.

Mr. Waldorf was born August 12, 1886, at Moundridge and was married to Grace C. Barrack February 14, 1907. A highly regarded citizen, he had resided in this community from 1900 till 1936, during which time he engaged in farming and was a rural mail carrier.

For more than twenty years, Mr. Waldorf had lived in San Benito, Texas, where he was a supervisor of typhus and malaria control before retiring in 1963. He returned to El Dorado last May. He was a member of the Modern Woodmen of America.

Surviving are Mrs. Waldorf, two sons, Graydon R. Waldorf, 632 Hunton, and Morris, Jr., of Beaufort, S.C. and three sisters, Mrs. Gus Benjamin of Grand Junction, Colo., Mrs. E. C. Batman, Elk City and Mrs. O. A. Malcolm of Arkansas City. (El Dorado Times, July 25, 1963)

BURR, HELEN M.

Helen M. Burr, 86, retired Wesley Medical Center housekeeper and former El Dorado resident, died Sunday.

Services were this afternoon at the Salem United Methodist Church, Newton. Burial was in Sunset Lawn Cemetery, El Dorado.

Survivors include two sons, Donald T. of Camp Hill, Penn., and William C. of Hays.

Byrd-Snodgrass Downtown Funeral Home of Wichita was in charge of arrangements. (El Dorado Times, August 14, 1980)
