Deceased Name: RUBY MCELROY STOOD BY THOSE WHO FELT LIKE GIVING UP
Ruby Viola McElroy was a quiet hero.
At 74, she worked with the Augusta branch of the Bi-County Health Department, caring for elderly clients who were
ill, helping them with everything from meal preparation to sewing to house-cleaning.
"There are so many quiet heroes, and Ruby was definitely one," said Beth Gates, the health department's
community services director. "She was a tremendous moral support for many who, unlike herself, felt like giving
up."
Mrs. McElroy died Thursday on her way to visit two of those clients, an elderly couple in their 80s.
''You couldn't have had a more fulfilling life," Gates said. "She loved this work. Every time I'd see
her or meet with her, she said how I had saved her from being an old lady . . . She was truly an inspiration to
us all."
Mrs. McElroy was born on a farm southeast of Douglass on Jan. 22, 1912. She was still a child when her family moved,
first to a farm northwest of Atlanta, then to her grandfather's farm west of Rock. In 1929, she married Jack McElroy,
a farmer, part-time carpenter and oil worker. When he died in 1984, they had been married 55 years.
''She loved life. She loved living," said her sister, Velma Howard of Augusta. "She just loved being
around everybody. She always had a smile on her face. She was always willing to help where she was needed."
After her husband's death, Mrs. McElroy joined the health department's Green Thumb program, a part-time employment
program for senior citizens. "She wanted of all things to contribute to the community and other people,"
Gates said. Although she was only paid to work 21 hours a week, Mrs. McElroy volunteered many more hours of her
time, Gates said.
The Augusta Health Department is planning to close Monday during Mrs. McElroy's funeral as a gesture of respect,
Gates said.
Besides her sister Velma, Mrs. McElroy's survivors include her son, David, and a daughter, Victoria Guy, both of
Augusta; her brother, Francis Harris of Sedan; another sister, Alice Craft of Mulvane; and five grandchildren.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Dunsford Funeral Home in Augusta. A memorial has been established with the
First Baptist Church of Augusta.
