MEYER, RUTH

KANSAS JOURNALIST WAS KNOWN FOR HER HARD WORK RUTH MEYER, WHO SPECIALIZED IN HUMAN INTEREST STORIES, DIED IN TEXAS AT AGE 98.

Ruth Meyer was one of those old-time journalists who mentored many a young reporter.

"When I first started working for the Eagle in 1953, she was already an old-time newspaper woman," said Kathleen Kelly, former Wichita Eagle food editor. "I learned a lot from her by just having her go over my copy. She knew everything about the newspaper, and back then, it used to be hot, dirty work. But she was a lady. In what was then a man's business, she was one of the original careerwomen."

Ruth Meyer, a retired Kansas newspaper reporter and artist, died Monday in Austin, Texas. She was 98.

Her son, Bill, editor of the Marion County Record, said it was his mother's exuberance for her profession that influenced him to become a journalist.

"I remember she went all over the state covering every county fair and dog catcher," Meyer said. "She knew thousands of people across the state and she loved it."

Born Jan. 12, 1899, in Dewey County, Okla., Mrs. Meyer spent a lifetime collecting stories. She started her career as a reporter on the Pratt Union and Pratt Tribune.

She married Otto Meyer in Pratt in 1924 and in 1927 moved with him to Cassoday, where they operated a garage, grocery and restaurant.

Shortly after moving to Cassoday, she began writing feature stories for William Allen White's Emporia Gazette and a column for Rolla Clymer's El Dorado Times.

In the 1940s, the Meyer family moved to El Dorado. Her husband worked at Beech Aircraft in Wichita, and she became editor and publisher of the Whitewater Independent.

In 1950, she sold the paper and joined the staff of the Wichita Eagle, where she worked as food editor, real estate editor and, at the time of her retirement in 1965, was a special feature writer who wrote human interest stories.

She moved to Marion in 1965 and began working on the staff of the Marion County Record, covering the courthouse and writing feature stories. Her Personality Profile was especially popular with local readers, Bill Meyer said.

He remembers that his mother had varied interests - including china painting and weaving.

He also remembers that she was a hard worker.

"She would work until she was completely, physically exhausted," he said.

And she valued her family.

"I remember one time my son was going to play a blackbird in a MayFair," Bill Meyer said. "She drove 1,000 miles to see him be a blackbird. His part only lasted 15 seconds but that was the kind of person she was. She was determined and she had an unbelievable drive."

She moved to Austin in 1990 to be near her daughter's family.

Survivors include her son, Bill Meyer; daughter, Ruth Elaine Weaver, Austin; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson.

A memorial has been established in her name with the Kansas Newspaper Foundation, 5423 S.W. Seventh, Topeka, Kan. 66606.
