BARR, MADGE

Word has been received of the tragic death of Madge Barr, 19, a former Augusta girl, who committed suicide a few days ago on her mother's grave at Chadwick, Mo. Worry over school work, it is said probably was the cause of her act.

Madge Barr was the third daughter of david Barr, who moved from Augusta to Missouri about five years ago. Her mother has been dead for three years and Madge was at the head of the family, keeping house and attending schoo, preparing to teach.

Madge told one of the younger children she was going to town. Instead she went to the cemetery and with her brother's revolver shot herself at her mother's grave. The body was not found for two days. (El Dorado Times, August 1, 1914)

GATES, IDA BEATRICE

Ida Beatrice Gates, 85, formerly of El Dorado, died Wednesday. She was a resident of Cherryvale, Kan. Services were Saturday at grain view Cemetery in Cherryvale.

Surviving are husband, Carl Gates, whom she had married Jan. 12, 1946; son, Burtis Miller of Kechi; daughter, Imojean West, of Tooele, Utah; seven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

Gates was proceded in death by sons Curtis Miller and daris Raymond Miller and one grandchild. She was born October 17, 1897, at St. Francisville, Ill., to Theodore and Evelyn Wease. She married Curtis Miller on April 21, 1914. Miller died in 1933. (El Dorado Times, April 18, 1983)

McCREIGHT, GILBERT SAMUEL

Gilbert Samuel McCreight, died at his home in Sycamore township, 16 miles northeast of El Dorado Sunday night August 2, 1914 at 12:30 of apoplexy. He was 59 years, 8 months and 20 days old. He had been a sufferer for the last five weeks.

Mr. McCreight was born in Ohio, November 13, 1854. He was married at Shellsburg, Ia., february 3, 1880, to Miss Jennie Youel. They came to kansas during that year and located in Jackson county, where they lived until 1904, when they came to Butler county and located on Durachen. Chelsea and Sycamore townships have since been their home.

To them have been born six children, five sons and one daughter. One son, Elton died four years ago. The others with their bereaved mother survive. They are: Mrs. Blanche Ditch, Frank C., Roy Y., Verle O., and Clarence L. McCreight, all of Sycamore except Roy who lives in El Dorado.

Mr. McCreight was a good man and estimable citizen, a member of the Methodist Church, since his youth and one whose life was blameless.

The funeral will be held from the home Tuesday at 10 a.m. conducted by the pastor of the M. E. Church at cassoday followed by interment in Chelsea Cemetery. (El Droado Times, August 3, 1914)

PATRICK, ADDIE

Mrs. Addie Patrick, 5, oldest daughter of Col. A. C. Ramsey of DeGraff, died Friday in Kansas City. She grew to womanhood in El Dorado, living here until her marriage, 25 years ago. Since that time she has lived in Kansas City and New York. Her five brothers and brother-in-law acted as pallbearers. She is survived by her parents, one sister, Mrs. Chastin of Kansas City, husband, two sons, five brothers, Harry, of Kansas City, Guy, George, Roy and Robert, of Butler County. VALENTINE, J. H.

Coroner W. E. Turner received notice at midnight Friday night that the body of J. H. Valentine, 40, had been found at 9 p.m. in a stock well on his farm, five miles east of Gordon, by neighbors, who believe he committed suicide.

Valentine was a widower and his two children were unable to find him when they returned from school Friday. neighbors started a hunt and found the body in the well.

Mrs. M. B. Osgood, who kept house for him, is said to have received $250 from Valentine when she threatened to have him arrested on a white slave charge, two weeks ago, after he tried to settle with her for $40. Valentine met her at teh Kafir Corn Carnival here three years ago and is said to have sent her money to come from Kansas City.

Neighbors say that Valentine told them he was worried because of the woman's actions in sending him postcards taunting him for being an easy mark and threatening to sue for part of his estate as a common law wife. He owned 240 acres of good land in Bloomington township and carried $2,000 insurance. The whereabouts of Mrs. Osgood is unknown.

Coroner W. E. Turner had not decided late Saturday afternoon to hold an inquest, but thought none would be held. A hole was found int he back of Valentine's head. (El Dorado Times, February 21, 1914)

CAMERON, JAMES ROSS

James Ross Cameron, 76, Tulsa, died Monday, May 29. Services were Friday at Tulsa Baptist Temple. Burial rites were in Moore's Eastlawn Chapel, Memorial Park, Tulsa.

He was born in 1876 in Cassoday the son of the late Rev. and Mrs. E. Cameron early Cassoday settlers. He married Beulah Yarberry, who died in 1955. He was retired from Sun-Ray Oil company and at the time of his death was a part-time bookkeeper. He was active in the Tulsa Baptist Temple and taught a Sunday school class.

Survivors include two sons, G. Neal, Inola, Okla., and James O., Tulsa, two daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Tunrer, Tulsa and Mrs. Joanne Brubaker, Zion, Ill. And 12 granchildren. (El Dorado Times, June 5, 1972)

CHILDERS, CLIFFORD

Clifford Childers, 27 years old, and the son of Mrs. Joseph Childers of Cassoday, died at Garden City, Kansas Wednesday night while en route to Colorado, for his health. Funeral services and burial took place at Cassoday at 3 o'clock, Thursday afternoon.

About six weeks ago, he returned from Colorado, to attend the funeral of his father. His condition at that time was improved and he determined to stay. About one week ago, he began to grow worse and Wednesday accompanied by his brother, Ivan Childers, he again started for Colorado in search of health. (Walnut Valley Times, November 19, 1914)

CHILDERS, JOSEPH

Joseph Childers, of Cassoday, died at 1:40 a.m. Monday, from complications resulting from a cold contracted two months ago.

Mr. Childers was one of Cassoday's first residents, having moved there from Matfield Green when the first Orient railroad boom was manifest. He was born in Indiana 78 years ago and came to Chase County 25 years ago where he successfully conducted a farm near Matfield Green until he moved with his family to Cassoday. Mr. Childers owned considerable property there.

He leaves a wife, three sons, William, Clifford and Ivan, and two daughters, Mrs. Bond Lines and Miss Maud Childers. The latter is teaching school near Leon. The children were present at his death.

Funeral services will be conducted by Rev. Corl from the Cassoday Methodist Church, Tuesday. (Walnut Valley Times, September 21, 1914)

DAUBER, JAMES "JIM" G.

Services for James "Jim" G. Dauber, 59 of Santa Maria, Calif., were held Dec. 13. He died Dec. 8, 1990.

Mr. Dauber was born Aug. 1, 1931 in El Dorado. He was parts manager for Renfrow Airport Auto Center and was retired from the Air Force after 20 years of service.

Survivors include: wife, Karola, son, Steven, both of the home; daughter, Petra Groce of Santa Marie, Calif., mother, Marcet Dauber of El Dorado, brothers, Duane of El Dorado, Robert "Bob" of Arlington, Texas., sister, Darlene dauber of Mesquite, Texas, two grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, one son and one brother. (El Dorado Times, Dec. 26, 1990)

DICK, EDWIN GLENN

Edwin Glenn Dick, 90, of Ottawa, retired physics and math associate professor, former El Dorado teacher, died Saturday, Dec. 22, 1990 at Ransom Memorial Hospital. Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home. Private burial services will be held in later in January at the Ottawa University Chapel.

Mr. Dick was born Nov. 29, 1900 in Pomona, Kans. To Orrin E. and Ethel Lea Glenn Dick. He graduated from Ottawa University with a B. S. degree in 1923.

On June 24, 1925 he and Margaret Ruth Johnson were married in Ottawa. They celebrated their 65th anniversary in June.

He was a member of First Baptist Church, former secretary of the Kansas College Athletic Conference, member of Ottawa Lions Club, Retired Teachers Association. He was the first person to receive the distinguished teacher award at Ottawa University.

Survivors include: wife, Ruth J., of the home, son, Robert of Kansas City, daughters, Martha Lou Elliott of Ottawa, Marjorie A. Killingsworth of Lenexa, Louis Jeane Hawley of Rancho Mirage, Calif., sister, Carol Wrench of Lawrence, 13 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren. (El Dorado Times, Dec. 24, 1990)

DERBYSHIRE, WILBERT J.

Wilbert J. Derbyshire, 100, died Friday, July 20, 1990 at the Madison Manor nursing home.

The son of William Benson and Mary Alice Kindel Derbyshire, he was born June 24, 1890 in McPherson county. He came to the Madison area with his family in 1899 and spent the remainder of his life here.

He was a retired farmer and stockman. He also sold machinery and drove a school bus for several years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Hartford.

Mr. Derbyshire was married to Dora Brown in Emporia on July 1, 1911. She died on September 30, 1970. Two sons, two brothers and one sister also died earlier.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Allen (Dorothy) Storrer and Mrs. Emil (Mildred) Ott, both of Madison, four grandchildren, three step- great-grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday, July 22 at the Wilson Funeral Home in Madison. The minister was Reverend Howard K. Busby, the organist was Mrs. Morris Greenwood and the vocalist was Mrs. Harold Engle. The pallbearers were Jerry and Jared Ott, Darrin and Darick Hemphill, Andy Twyman and Kelt Engle. Burial was in Blakely cemetery at Madison. (El Dorado Times, July 26, 1990)

HACKLER, JOHN W.

John W. Hackler, 72, Cassoday, Route 1, a resident of Butler County for 47 years died at his home Thursday.

Funeral services will be announced through the Kirby Funeral Home.

Mr. Hackler had lived 20 years in the Cassoday area. Prior to that he resided on a farm south of El Dorado for 29 years. He lived at Towanda after coming from Missouri 47 years ago.

Mr. Hackler was born Aug. 8, 1893, in Missouri and was married to Berta Wilson on Feb. 4, 1911.

Surviving are his widow of the home; five daughters, Mrs. Hilma Braman, El Dorado, Route 4, Mrs. Hope Kropf, El Dorado, Route 3, Mrs. Joy Cox, Campbell, Calif., Mrs. Sharon Marceno, San Jose, Calif., Mrs. Melva Reed, Garland, Tex.; six sons, Hurley Hackler of Feesterville, Pa., Kefton Hackler, Wichita, A. E. Hackler, Santa Clara, Calif., E. L. Hackler, El Dorado Route 4, Perry W. Hackler, Towanda, D. W. Hackler, El Dorado Route 1, five sisters, Mrs. Loretta Burd, Denver, Mrs. T. P. Little, Joplin, Mo., Mrs. Lennie Horner, Monett, Mo., Mrs. Minnie Phillips, Windyville, Mo., and Mrs. John Junkins, 836 North Taylor, and one brother, V. M. Hackler, Collins, Iowa.

There are 27 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. (El Dorado Times, July 29, 1966)

HANDLE, ADA C. (MRS. LOREN H.)

Funeral services for Mrs. Loren H. Handle (Ada C.) 87 Burns, are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at the Cassoday United Methodist church. Mrs. Handle died Tuesday, Feb. 12, at the Peabody Memorial Nursing Home, Peabody.

Rev. H. Marvin Bower, pastor, will officiate at the services. Mrs. Larry Patton organist will accompany Chad R. Patton, who will sing "How Great Thou Art" and "The Lord's Prayer." Casket bearers will be Frederick Brening, Robert Diller, Dale Hamilton, Richard Goering, Herman J. Schuler, and John Hoy.

Interment will be at the Cassoday cemetery. Dietz Colonial Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Handle was born April 3, 1886 in Missouri, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel F. Sale (Isabelle Shoemaker). They came to Kansas from Missouri when she was a young woman and settled in the Cassoday Burns area. She was married to Mr. Handle on May 22, 1912. He died in 1955. Mrs. Handle was a member of the Cassoday United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a son, Paul H. Handle, Burns, a daughter, Mrs. Glenwood Hursh (Helen), Cheaspeake, Va., four grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. (El Dorado Times, February 14, 1974)

McGREGOR, ROBERT L.

Robert L. McGregor, 55, of Santa Cruz, Calif., a former resident of the Bluestem region, died suddenly Thursday night. Funeral services are pending.

Mr. McGregor was born at Cassoday on March 7, 1914. He attended schools in Cassoday and Rosalia, but had lived in California since 1932. He had engaged in construction work and more recently was in the real estate business.

Surviving: Mary his wife, Marian; his mother, Mrs. Jessie B. McGregor of Leon, three sisters, Mrs. Carl Fisher of Ogden, Kan., Mrs. Emmett Gifford of Wichita and Mrs. Jessa Ferna Gould of Leon; and three brothers, William A., McGregor of Vinita, Okla., Harrison E. McGregor of Riley, Kan., and Keith M. McGregor of Leon. (El Dorado Times, September 13, 1969)

MILLER, HERMAN H.

Herman H. Miller, 89, of 1109 North Taylor, a former resident of Cassoday area and a retired farmer, died Friday evening, at Allen Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at the Cassoday United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Cassoday cemetery.

Mr. Miller was born at Joliet, Ill., on June 11, 1880. He came to Kansas in 1888, living at Haven. He moved to a farm in Butler County southwest of Cassoday in 1939 and lived there until his retirement in 1956. At that time, Mr. Miller moved to El Dorado.

He was married to Marie Robinson, on August 20, 1923.

Surviving are his wife; three daughters, Mrs. Curtis Unruh of Cassoday, Mrs. Robert Williams of Wellington and Mrs. Ray Ward of Mountain View, Calif., two sons, Harry L. Miller and Herman J. Miller, both of Cassoday and by 13 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Mr. Miller was preceded in death by five brothers, two sisters and a daughter and a grandchild.

A memorial in his name has been established with the Cassoday United Methodist church.

MULANAX, WALTER W.

Services for Walter W. Mulanax, 62, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Brown-Bennett Funeral Home. Cottonwood Falls, Kan. Burial will be in Cassoday. He died Friday of an illness in Michigan.

He was born in Denison, Kan.

Survivors include his widow, Dora; his mother, Mrs. Myrtle Mulanx, Cottonwood Falls; a brother, Arthur, Cottonwood Falls, and a sister, Mrs. Lee Gurney, Cedar Point. (El Dorado Times, December 5, 1969)

PLUMMER, SARAH (MRS. FORREST)

Mrs. Forrest (Sarah) Plummer, 59, Cassoday, died Wednesday at Bethel Hospital, Newton. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Cassoday cemetery.

Born in 1913 in Buffalo, Mo., she married Forrest Plummer August 18, 1932, at Cottonwood Falls. They lived in the Cassoday area since 1936.

She was a member of the Cassoday Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Les Hall, Denver, Colo., and Mrs. Ron Ford, Haysville, three sons, Ben, 610 West 10th, Al, Burns, and Frank, Denver, Colo.; her mother, Mrs. Katie Hoberecht, Bremerton, Wash.; two sisters, Mrs. Esther Schmidt and Mrs. Ruth Perkins of Missouri one brother, Delmar Hoberecht, Seattle, Wash., and nine grandchildren.

A memorial has been established with the American Cancer society. Donations can be made through the First National Bank and Trust Co.

REED, LOUISE M.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church at Cassoday for Louise M. Reed, 87, who died Monday at a hospital in Bartlesville, Okla. She was a former resident of Cassoday.

Born at Braden, Germany October 19,1885, she came to the United States when she was six months old. She married J. M. Reed on Feb. 19, 1909 at Soldier, Kan. and moved to Cassoday shortly after the wedding. Her husband preceded her in death.

Survivors include three sons - Col. A. L. Reed of Albuquerque, New Mexico; Marion F. Reed of Bartlesville and Ralph Reed of Milwaukee, Wis. A daughter, Mrs. Caroline Morrison of San Francisco, Calif., five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren also survive.

Stumpff Funeral Home of Bartlesville is in charge of the arrangements. Interment will follow the services at the Cassoday cemetery. (El Dorado Times, April 16, 1973)
