PANNELL, ALFRED W. REV.

Funeral services over the body of Rev. Alfred W. Pannell, who had been pastor of Trinity Episcopal Church at El Dorado for 10 years and whose death occurred Saturday morning at Topeka, were held yesterday afternoon at Grace Cathedral in Topeka. The services were largely attended. Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Penwell and Jeanette and Mrs. Nellie Penwell attended from here and Joe Turner and Gail Moss, former El Doradoans also were present at the services.

The services were conducted by the Rt. Rev. James Wise, bishop of Dean day, of Grace Cathedral, Rev. Mr. Spencer of Marysville, and Archdeacon Smith, of Topeka. The body lay in state yesterday from 10 o'clock in the morning till time for the services. Burial was made at Topeka.

During Mr. Pannell's residence here, he was on one occasion presented an individual communion set by Troop No. 1 of the El Dorado Boy Scouts. His will leaves this set to Trinity Episcopal Church here, and the communion set was brought to El Dorado by the Penwells when they returned last night.

A memorial service for Mr. Pannell will be held at 9 o'clock tomorrow morning at the local church. The service will be open to the public. (El Dorado Times, Tuesday, June 9, 1931)

PARKS, WAYNE E.

Wayne E. Parks, 69, Route 1, Leon, died here Sunday night after being stricken earlier in the day at his home. He was a farm laborer and had resided in the Rosalia area since 1897.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Dietz-Pittman Colonial chapel with Rev. C. M. Nutter, staff member at the First Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Blankenship Cemetery.

Mr. Parks was born Oct. 27, 1896, in Barton County, Mo., and came with his family to the Rosalia area the following year. Surviving are two brothers, Morris R. Parks, of Route 2, Leon, and Charles O. Parks, Petersburg, Alaska.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Clyde A. Parks, who died in infancy, and a sister, Norma Aubrey Parks, who died in December, 1956. (El Dorado Times, Nov. 22, 1965)

Funeral services for Wayne E. Parks, of R1, Leon who died Sunday night were held at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon in the Dietz-Pittman Colonial chapel, and burial was made in the Blankenship Cemetery.

Mr. Parks was stricken during the day Sunday and was taken to the Allen Memorial Hospital where he died that night, Nov. 21. He was a farm laborer and was employed by Ted Farmer on the former C. E. Tatum and later Rolla Beadles farm north of Leon.

He was born Oct. 27, 1896, in Barton Co., Mo., and came with his family to the Rosalia vicinity in 1897, where he resided ever since, until the past few months.

He is survived by two brothers, Morris R. Parks, R2, Leon and Charles O. Parks, of Petersburg, Alaska.

Preceded him in death were a brother, Clyde A. Parks, who died in infancy, and a sister, Norma Aubrey Parks, who died in December, 1956. (El Dorado Times, November 25, 1965)

PEFFER, SUSAN H.

Four members of the El Dorado Business & Professional Women's Club attended the funeral services which were held yesterday afternoon, at Eureka, over the body of Mrs. Susan H. Peffer, who committed suicide by hanging herself at her home Sunday morning. The four were: Mrs. Nellie Lichlyter, Mrs. Anna Sandin, Miss Ethel Lewis, and Miss Blanche Hollinshead. Mrs. Peffer was state president of the Professional & Business Women's Clubs and one of the widely and most favorably known resident of the Eureka Community, where she had lived for a number of years. She had been in El Dorado many times and had a large number of friends in this community.

The funeral was one of the largest attended ever held in Eureka. (El Dorado Times, Thursday, January 14, 1932)

PETTY, ELDON R.

Eldon R. Petty, 67, a former resident of El Dorado died Sunday morning at the Hadley memorial hospital in Hays, Kan. He had been a patient at the hospital only one day but had been in failing health since May.

Mr. Petty was born Sept. 4, 1898, in St. Francisville, Ill. He was married Dec. 7, 1926, to Wava Marie Jackson at Cottonwood Falls.

He came to El Dorado in 1926 and lived here until 1941 when he moved to Great Bend. From there he went to Hays in 1949.

Mr. Petty was an oil well plugging supervisor for the Kansas State Corporation Commission.

He was a member of the First Methodist Church of Hays, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star of Hays, and a member of Patmos Lodge No. 97 of El Dorado.

Surviving are his wife, two sons, Bruce Petty, of the home and Norman Petty, Norton; his mother, Mrs. Cora Petty El Dorado, two sisters, Mrs. Orian Wilson El Dorado and Mrs. Lorene Trapp, Russell and four grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Mall's Mortuary chapel in Hays by Rev. George Beebe, pastor of the Methodist Church in Hays.

Masonic services will be held at the graveside in Sunset Lawns cemetery at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. (El Dorado Times, Oct. 25, 1965)

PIPER, MAGGIE G.

Mrs. Maggie G. Piper, 80, of 515 West Olive, died Saturday evening in Allen Memorial Hospital following a brief illness.

She was born on March 3, 1885 at Florence and was married there to Henry G. Piper on September 9, 1900.

She came to Oil Hill from Florence in 1917 and resided there until 1939, when she moved to Wellington. After a year's residence there, she returned to Butler County and since had resided at El Dorado.

She was a member of the First Methodist Church of El Dorado and Friendship Rebekah Lodge No. 10.

She was preceded in death by her husband, on May 5, 1940, and by one son, William E. Piper.

Surviving are two sons, Paul Piper of Apache Junction, Ariz., and Andrew F. Piper of 345 North Orchard, three daughters, Mrs. Orla B. Davis, 515 West Olive, Mrs. Bernard Zang, Wichita, and Mrs. J. F. Hirst, Gravatt, Ark.; 12 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

The funeral services will be held in the Kirby Funeral Home Chapel on Tuesday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. C. M. Nutter of the First Methodist church officiating. Interment will be made in Sunset Lawns. (El Dorado times, Oct. 4, 1965)

POE, MABEL INEZ HALL (Mrs. Cecil H.)

Mabel Inez Hall, only daughter of Owen and Frances Hall, was born on December 21, 1896, at El Dorado, and died at Potwin on May 31, 1933 at the age of 36 years, five months and 10 days.

At the age of 18 years, she was converted and united with the Christian Church, at Potwin and on June 23, 1915, she was married to Cecil H. Poe, of Potwin.

Mrs. Poe spent most of her life in and around Potwin and was a friend to everyone. In addition to being a member of the Christian Church, she belonged to the Embroidery Club, of Potwin and the Women's Relief Corps and Rebekah Lodge of El Dorado. She was vice grand elect of the latter organization. Surviving are her husband; her father and mother; a brother, Virgil and a grandmother.

Funeral services were held on June 2 at the Christian Church, in Potwin, with Rev. J. H. Higdon and Rev. W. L. Martin, officiating. The Rebekah Lodge at El Dorado was in charge of services at the grave in McGill Cemetery. Pallbearers were H. G. Shaw, Randolph Moore, Nate Everett, A. M. Shrepfer, Harry Coats, and Paul Petty. Mrs. C. H. Poe, 35, died Wednesday morning at her home at Potwin. She had been in ill health about midnight,dying in a few hours. Friends had visited with her in El Dorado on Tuesday afternoon.

Mrs. Poe had been a resident of Potwin most of her life. She is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. O. A. Hall and one brother, Virgil Hall of Potwin. She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge in El Dorado, and was vice grand elect for that order.

Funeral services will be held today (Friday). The Smith Bros. Mortuary of Whitewater is in charge. (Butler County News, Friday, June 2, 1933)

PORTER, RICHARD A.

Richard A. Porter, of 208 Lochinvar, Wichita, secretary of Wichita Consistory, died Saturday, June 20, 1987, at the Masonic Home in Wichita.

Services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Wichita Consistory. Memorials have been established in his name with the Kansas Masonic Home and the Wichita Consistory Restoration Fund.

Cochran Mortuary of Wichita has charge of arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth, son, Richard A. Porter, Jr., of Long Island, N.Y., daughter, Maureen Bailey of Clearwater; mother Vida Porter of Mount Hope; sister, Harriet Solter of Oklahoma City; and five grandchildren. (El Dorado Times, June 22, 1987)

POSEY, LEWIS Y.

Lewis Y. Posey, 59 farmer in his section for 40 years, died Sunday at his home near Leon. He came to Kansas from Missouri in 1891 and lived at or near Leon ever since except for a short time in Oklahoma. He was a member of the Christian Church.

He is survived by his wife, Lottie; four daughters, Mrs. Robert Fulton, West Hollywood, Calif., Mrs. Clyde Browne, Route 6, Wichita, Miss Preem and Miss Audrey, at home; four sons, Paul, Route 1, Peck, Theodore, Route 5, Wichita; John, Wichita and Boyd, at home; and a sister, Mrs. Florence Hinchcliffe, Strafford, Mo. POTTS, MICHAEL R.

Michael R. Potts, 18, of 939 Longfellow, Wichita, former Augusta resident, whose body was found Wednesday near Beach Aircraft Corporation in Wichita, a former Scholfield Brothers employee, died Oct. 14,1986.

Services were 3 p.m. today at Elmwood Cemetery, Augusta.

Survivors include his father, Fred E. Potts of Wichita, mother, Joyce (Larcom) Potts, of Loveland, Colo., brothers, David of Wichita and Eugene of Augusta; sister, Elaine Heit of Augusta; grandparents, Floyd and Vada Potts of Douglass.

A memorial fund has been established with the Prairie State Bank and the Citadel State Bank of Augusta.

POUNSIL, ARTHUR A. SR.

Arthur A. Pounsil Sr., 55, of Wichita, Pounsil Family Construction cement finisher and father of Arthur Jr. of El Dorado, died Monday, Dec. 28, 1987. Services are pending.

Survivors include wife, Joanne, sons, Terry, Curtis, both at home, Daniel of Wichita, Arthur Jr. of El Dorado, daughters, Tracy R. at home, Saliza R. of Wichita, mother, Agnes, father and stepmother, Avana B. Sr. and Tina, all of Independence, brothers, LeRoy, Avana Jr., both of Kansas City, Mo., Ozell, James, both of Independence, David of Marion, Ill., sisters, Bertie Webb of Wichita, Pauline, Deanna Goodlow, both of Low Angeles; six grandchildren. POWELL, CLIFFORD ELTON

Clifford Elton Powell, 75, died Tuesday, Feb.10, 1987. He was a resident of Silver Springs, Md.; and was a prominent interior decorator in Washington D.C. He was born in El Dorado, the son of Carl and Gertrude Dick Powell.

Graveside services will be 12:30 p.m. Thursday at the Spring Hill Cemetery, Lynchburg, Va. Memorial has been established with the Virginia Baptist Hospital, Lynchburg. The Whitten Funeral Home of Lynchburg is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors: two sons, Dr. John G. Powell of Lynchburg and Richard S. Powell of Silver Springs, Md.; two grandchildren. His wife, Mary Sanders Powell, preceded him in death. (El Dorado Times, February 11, 1987)

POWELL, DAVE (MRS.)

The death of Mrs. Dave Powell, a former resident of El Dorado, occurred recently at Los Angeles, Calif.

During the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Powell in this community, Mr. Powell was engaged in the operation of a dairy business here.

After his death in 1948, Mrs. Powell moved to Los Angeles and recently had made her home there with her only child, Mrs. Vera Hopper. One grandchild also survives.

Funeral rites were conducted at Los Angeles and interment was made in the rose garden of Westwood Memorial Cemetery. (El Dorado Times, Nov. 15, 1965)

POWELL, DOROTHY HINKLE (MRS. JOE)

Mrs. J. C. (Dorothy Hinkle) Powell, 84, a long and highly regarded resident of El Dorado for many years, died of heart attack at 4 o'clock Friday afternoon, April 30, in Houston, Texas.

Funeral services will be held at the First United Presbyterian Church in El Dorado at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon, May 3, conducted by the minister, Rev. James F. Clarke. Interment will be made in Belle Vista Mausoleum.

A memorial for Mrs. Powell has been established in the name of the First United Presbyterian Church, of which she was a member.

Her body will arrive in El Dorado Sunday evening and be taken to the Kirby Funeral Home, which has charge of the arrangements. Friends who wish to call may do so Monday until 12 o'clock noon. The casket will not be opened at the church.

Mr. Powell, who is desperately ill at Methodist hospital in Houston with special nurses on 24-hour schedule, will be unable to come to El Dorado for the funeral.

Early in last December, Mr. and Mrs. Powell went to Houston, where they occupied a suite at the Shamrock Hilton hotel. When Mr. Powell was taken to the hospital several weeks ago, Mrs. Powell went to the home of their daughter, Mrs. Robert )Jo Frances) Sangster, where she remained until last Thrusday. She was on her way to the hotel suite 24 hours later, when she was assailed by the fatal attack.

Mr. and Mrs. Sangster, who will come to El Dorado for the obsequies, are expected to reach here Sunday.

For several years past, Mr. and Mrs. Powell had been spending a portion their time each year in Texas cities. They, however, kept their home at 207 South Topeka in order, and regularly returned here. Mr. Powell maintained a business office in the Mid-Continent Federal Savings and Loan Association building on North Main.

Mrs. Powell, who was a woman of high character and possessed a strong personality was influential in club and civic affairs in this community - and had won a host of firm friends. During latter years, she had confined her activities largely to the Daughters of the American Revolution, the E. M. B. Senior Club and to her First United Presbyterian church.

She was the daughter of H. W. and Kittie (Beaver) Hinkler, who were distinguished pioneer residents of this county. She was born at the Hinkle home, near El Dorado, on February 16, 1881. Her father, who was a Virginian and of Colonial ancestry, came to Butler County in 1878.

Mrs. Powell's grandparents on her mother's side, the Beavers, originally were from Indiana, and then lived in Illinois for several years before coming to Kansas where they settled. They like the Hinkles, were mainly engaged in farming enterprises.

Mrs. Powell was married on June 1, 1904 to J. C. Powell who was born in Greenwood county near Reece in 1880 and whose family lived on a farm in Glencoe Township, Butler County. They are the parents of the one daughter, Mrs. Sangster, of Houston.

During his adult years, Mr. Powell conducted a high class hardware store in El Dorado and ranked among this community's civic leaders. (El Dorado Times, May 1, 1965)

A gathering of relatives and many old time friends was present Monday afternoon for the funeral of Mrs. Joseph C. Powell, a highly esteemed elder resident of this community.

Services were held at 2 p.m. at the First United Presbyterian Church, conducted by its pastor, Rev. James F. Clarke. The front of the main auditorium was banked with floral tributes. Burial was made at the Belle Vista Mausoleum.

Mrs. L. W. Newcomer, organist, played special selections during the ceremonies.

The bearers were R. Y. Taliaferro, Jr., Robert A. Zebold Jr., Jack T. Noble, Charles Garretson, Frank Malone and Kenneth Steele.

Honorary bearers included John L. Harrison, Vaughn Seiver, J. B. McKay, James B. McKay Jr., Dr. G. W. hammel, Dr. R. M. Brian, J. L. Auer, Ed Corman, H. E. Jordan, Rex E. Bishop, W. H. Rex, J. E. Morris and R. A. Clymer. The Kirby Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Members of the DAR attended in a group.

The Mid Continent Federal Savings and Loan association closed its doors from 1:30 to 3 p.m. during the hours of the obsequies. Mr. Powell has his offices in the Mid-Continent building.

Mrs. Powell's survivors include her husband, who is recovering from a heart attack in a Houston, Texas hospital; a daughter, Mrs. Robert Sangster, Houston, who was present with her husband, three sisters, a brother, George W. Hinkle oil producer and financier of Wichita and two grandchildren. (El Dorado Times, May 4, 1965)

POWELL, LULA M.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the McDonald Funeral Home in Beloit for Lula M. Powell, the mother of an El Dorado woman. Mrs. Powell died Thursday, Feb. 12, 1987 at the Parkview Manor Care Center in Osborne at the age of 87.

Officiating at the services will be Rev. Robert Conway. Burial will follow the services in the Elmwood Cemetery in Beloit.

She was born Nov. 13, 1899 in Beloit and had been a lifelong resident of Beloit.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Beloit, the American legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars auxiliaries of Beloit and a member of the World War I barracks auxiliary of Concordia.

Survivors include a son, W. J. Powell Jr., Beloit, two daughters, Pat Graybast of Osborne and Ceone Wrench of El Dorado and 17 grandchildren.

A memorial has been established in her name for the Beloit Senior Citizens Center. (El Dorado Times, February 14, 1987)

POWELL, MARIAN M.

Marian M. Powell, 45, of 4118 W. 17th North, Wichita, Terrace Gardens Nursing Center certified medical assistant, a student in nursing at Butler County Community College, died Monday January 5, 1987.

Services are set for 10 a.m. Thursday at Cochran mortuary Chapel, 1411 N. Broadway, Wichita. A burial service will follow at 2 p.m. in the Greenlawns Cemetery at Pratt. Members of the Midian Shrine Tin Lizzie unit will attend services as a group.

Survivors include her husband, Walter, sons, Jesse Miller Jr., Randy Miller, both of Wichita; stepson, Rick Powell of Houston; stepdaughter, Debra Irene Powell of Wichita, brother, Ernest Jenkins of Hermitage, Mo.; four grandchildren.

Memorial has been established with Terrace Gardens Health Care Center. (El Dorado Times, January 6, 1987)

PREWITT, RAYMOND NEIL

Raymond Neil Prewitt, 61, of Cassoday, rancher, died at his home, Saturday, Nov. 14, 1987. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Cassoday United Methodist Church.

He was born Dec. 15, 1925, at Cassoday the son of Grover C and Bertha E. Prewitt. He married Melba Winey November 6, 1954 at Lawton, Okla., where he was serving in the U.S. Army at Fort Sill. He served on USD 492 School Board for many years, retiring in 1979. He was a member of the Cassoday United Methodist Church, and a charter member of the Cassoday Lions Club. As a young man, he contested in rodeos through out the area as a calf roper and steer wrestler.

Survivors include his wife, Melba, sons, Raymond, "Chip", Jr., Jerry, both of Cassoday, John of Broken Arrow, Okla., daughter, Debbie Reinert of Lincoln, mother, Bertha Prewitt of Cassoday, brother Ralph Prewitt of Cassoday, sister Ethel Marie Eggens of Arkansas City, four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father and one grandson. Memorials have been established with the Susan B. Allen Home Health Care and the El Dorado VFW. Carlson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. (El dorado times, November 16, 1987)

Funeral services for Raymond N. Prewitt were held Tuesday morning at the Cassoday United Methodist Church. Burial followed in the Cassoday Cemetery. He died Saturday November 14, 1987.

Officiating at the services were Reverend Galen Dreier. Assisting at the services were John Prewitt and Joe Reinert. John Prewitt sang "A Whole Lot of People Going Home."

Casket bearers were Chip Prewitt, John Prewitt, Jerry Prewitt and Joe Reinert.

Flag folders were Lewie Cooper and Harold Cooper. Carlson Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. (El Dorado Times, November 18, 1987)

PREWITT, ROGER, LEON

Graveside services for Roger Leon Prewitt, 69, of Leon, were held Friday morning at the Leon Cemetery. Mr. Prewitt died Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1987.

The Rev. Art Wilson, pastor of Haverhill Christian Church, officiated at the services. Rev. Wilson also sang "Amazing Grace" at the service.

PRIGMORE, ROBERT

Robert Prigmore, aged 13 years, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Prigmore who lives seven miles east of Augusta, was drowned late yesterday afternoon in the Little Walnut River four miles southeast of his home. An heroic attempt to save him was made by his 17 year old aunt, Catherine Doyle of Augusta.

Miss Doyle, visiting at the Prigmore home, and the boy went swimming about 5:00 o'clock. Roberts who was not an expert swimmer, became panic-stricken when the current swept him into a deep place in the river. Miss Doyle plunged in to save him.

When almost to the shore, the boy's struggle had so exhausted her that she was unable to hold him longer, and lost her grip. She was barely able to reach the bank. The boy disappeared in the river.

The spot was remote from houses and it was some time before aid could be summoned. The body was recovered an hour and a half after the accident. Am ambulance and inhalator form the Lahey & Martin Mortuary at Wichita had been summoned and after a speedy trip was on the ground. Application of the inhalator, however, could not revive the boy after the long period under the water.

Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Methodist Church in Augusta with Rev. F. M. Peeks, of Wichita, officiating. Interment will be made in McCabe Cemetery, southeast of Augusta. (El Dorado Times, Saturday, July 29, 1933)

PURDY, CHARLES

Charles Purdy, about 40, of Douglass, was fatally injured late last night when the car, which he was driving, overturned on a curve, 13 miles east of Douglass, inflicting internal injuries from which he died a short time later in a Winfield Hospital.

The Douglass man was returning home alone from Atlanta when the car skidded in some loose gravel at a curve and overturned, pinning the victim under the wreckage. He was found a few minutes later by Frank Fox of Douglass, and a Mr. Hatton of El Dorado. Purdy was rushed to the Winfield hospital where it was found he had received internal injuries and numbers cuts on the head and shoulders.

Mr. Purdy was a truck driver and was well known in that community. He is survived by his widow; three sons, Victor, Laverne and Francis, all of Douglass, and his mother Mrs. Fannie J. Purdy, also of Douglass.

The body was taken to the Irwin Funeral Home at Douglass where funeral arrangements will be announced later. (El Dorado Times, Tuesday, August 8, 1933)
