Robert Shannon, 95, Dies, One of Oldest Residents of Augusta
Robert L. Shannon, 95, died yesterday at his home at 300 Broadway following an illness of four months.
At 95, Mr. Shannon was one of Augustas oldest residents and he and his wife are believed to have been the longest married couple in the community. They would have observed their 71st wedding anniversary two weeks from tomorrow on Nov. 16.
Besides his wife, the former Beatrice B. Briscoe to whom he was married on Nov. 16, 1890, he is survived by a son, G.L. Shannon, who manages the D-X Sunray service station at 7th and Osage, and a daughter, Mrs. Josephine Ringo of Wichita. A brother, Lewis Shannon, and a sister, Ethel Loveless, reside at Triplett, Mo. Other survivors include four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Robert L. Shannon, son of James and Adaline White Shannon, was born at Columbus, Oh., Aug. 27, 1866. He came to Butler county from Hale, Mo., in 1905. He was an employee of the Santa Fe railroad for a number of years before his retirement. He was a member of the IOOF lodge.
Funeral services will be Thursday afternoon at 2:30 at Dunsford Chapel. Rev. Winston Worden, assistant pastor of the First Christian church, will officiate. Interment will be in Elmwood cemetery. (Augusta Daily Gazette ~ Wed., 1 Nov 1961 ~ Transcribed by Lori DeWinkler)
