SHIVELY, HELEN

Helen Shively, 75, of El Dorado, died Saturday evening, Nov. 5, 1994, at Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital. Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Sunset Lawns Cemetery. Dr. Dennis Kuder will officiate the services.

She was born Nov. 21, 1918, in Holland, Mo., the daughter of John Patrick and Annie (Archer) Little, and moved to Butler County as a child. She graduated in 1936 from El Dorado High school. In 1936 she and Roy Langley were married. He died in 1950. In 1953, she and C. Kenneth Shively were married in Augusta.

She worked at Mobil Refinery in Augusta from 1951 to 1966. She returned to El Dorado in 1972 and worked for several real estate companies until her retirement. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the church circle. She wrote poetry, for which she received several state awards and had poems published in the book "In Retrospect."

Survivors include: husband, C. Kenneth, sons, Kenneth Langely of Greenville, S.C., Phillip Langley of Lenexa; daughter, Linda Horton of Scranton, Penn.; sister, Elsie Larsen of Las Vegas, Nev.; nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren.

SHUMATE, FRANK EUGENE

Frank Eugene Shumate, 66, of Cedar Point, died April 22, 1994, at St. Luke Hospital in Marion. Services were held April 25 in Brown Bennett Alexander Funeral Home, Cottonwood Falls. Burial was in Cedar Point Cemetery. Rev. John Lansbury officiated the services.

He was born June 27, 1927, in Cedar Point, the son of L. R. and Grace Wright Shumate. On June 1, 1950, he and Louise Rader were married in Emporia. He was a Navy veteran of WWII and a member of the Masonic Lodge and American Legion. He was a retired rural route carrier for the Postal Service.

Survivors include, wife, Louise, son, Richard of Overland Park, daughter, Sharon Burton of Sloan, Iowa, sister, "Shorty" Kelly of Potwin, five grandchildren.

SLOAN, JOHN F.

John F. Sloan, 66, of El Dorado, died Friday morning, Dec. 30, 1994 at Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital. Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at Kirby Morris Funeral Home. Burial will be in Sunset Lawns Cemetery.

He was born Sept. 7, 1928, in Wichita, the son of Robert and Sylvia (McDaniel) Sloan, and had lived in El Dorado for 50 years. He was a veteran of WWII. He was a retired painter and a member of the American Legion and Loyal Order of the Moose.

On March 7, 1955 he and Dorothy "Renee" Carver were married in Bartlesville, Okla.

SMITH, DARRIN WAYNE

Darrin Wayne Smith, 27, of El Dorado, died Monday morning Feb. 7, 1994 at St. Francis Medical Center. Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday in Sunset Lawns cemetery.

He was born July 20, 1966 in El Dorado, the son of William and Marsha Pennington Smith. He was a machine operator for Century Plastics and a member of Temple Baptist Church.

SMITH, DOROTHEA (TOLBERT B.)

Dorothea (Tolbert B.) Smith, 85 of Abilene, died Thursday, Sept. 29, 1994. Memorial services were held Saturday afternoon at Pro-Bowl Bowling Center with the Abilene Bowling Association officiating and at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8 in Bluebonnet Hills Cemetery in Coffeyville, Texas under the direction of Guardian Funeral Home in Ft. Worth.

She was born in Newton and was raised in El Dorado. She graduated from El Dorado High School and El Dorado Junior College and attended Emporia Teacher's College. She taught at Logan Center School near Leon.

In 1929 she and Tolbert B. Smith were married in Kechi. She was a member of Brook Hollow Christian Church, Builder's Sunday School Class, Abilene Women's Bowling Association where she was president and was the first woman named to the Abilene Woman's Bowling Association "Hall of Fame," and taught bowling.

Survivors include: sons, Scott Smith of Abilene, Gary Smith of Richardson, John Tolbert Smith of Hurst; daughter, Sally Wescott of Atwater, Calif., half brother, Joe King of Wichita, 15 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild.

SMITH, EVA PEARL

Eva Pearl Smith, 76 of Augusta, died Thursday, March 17, 1994. Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at Dunsford Funeral Home. Burial will be in High Prairie Cemetery, rural Douglass.

She was born July 12, 1917, in Augusta, the daughter of Charlie Davis and Pearl Bolinger. On March 4, 1936, she and Leland E. Smith were married in El Dorado. He died in 1985. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include: sons, Terry of Augusta, "Gene" of Wichita, William of Haysville; daughter Mary Nixon of Leon; brother, Ed Davis of Atlanta; sisters, Daisy Palmer of Beaumont, Texas, Florence Robinson of Eureka, 19 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Wayne, a daughter, Dorothy Pauline, five brothers and one sister.

SMITH, GRACE (BERT R. MRS.)

Died in New Mexico, February 23, Mrs. Bert R. Smith of Reece, Greenwood County. Another victim of consumption and the earnest endeavor of those who loved her so dearly, availed not to keep away the destroyer.

Mrs. Smith is remembered as Grace Hutson, daughter of Mrs. Ida Huston of Rosalia. She was married only a couple of years and life must have been very precious to her. Her broken hearted husband brought her body home today, February 25, passed through El Dorado on the Mo. Pac. and was met by friends and sympathizers at Rosalia. She rests in Blankenship cemetery. SMITH, LOUIE ALBERT

Louie Albert Smith, 81, of El Dorado, died Tuesday morning, June 7, 1994, at Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital. Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Burns Cemetery. Dr. Dennis Kuder will officiate and Masonic services will be conducted at the gravesite.

He was born Oct. 18, 1912, on the Wells Ranch in Burns, the son of James and Nora (Sawyer) Smith and graduated from Burns High school.

In 1934, he and Ethel Hart were married in El Dorado. He had lived in El Dorado since 1934. For several years he operated a Phillips Service Station in El Dorado and a Vicker's and had worked at the Potwin refinery. He retired from Vulcan Industries in Wichita in 1978. His memberships included the First United Methodist Church, Patmos Masonic Lodge 97 AF&AM and the Elk's Lodge.

Survivors include: wife, Ethel, son, Gary of Flower Mound, Texas, six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Louis A. Jr., one brother and one sister.

Services are pending for Ruth Baker Smith, 68, of El Dorado, who died Wednesday, December 28, 1994.

She was born Oct. 23, 1926 in Gassaway, W. Va., the daughter of John C. and Madge Crockett Baker. She was self employed and had lived in El Dorado since 1951 after moving from West Virginia.

SMITHBACK, BILLY CLAYTON

Services for Billy Clayton Smithback of Littleton, Colo., were held Monday. He died May 20, 1994.

He was born Sept. 11, 1932, to Norman and Rose Smithback in Wellington where he graduated from high school in 1950. He joined the Navy in 1951 during the Korean War. On Dec. 3, 1960, he and Irene Brickley of El Dorado were married.

Survivors include: wife, Irene; daughter, Kathleen of the home; mother, Rose Smithback of Wellington; sisters, Joan Bruce of Littleton, Colo., Judy Smithback of Wellington. He was preceded in death by his father in 1976.

SNELLING, RICHARD

Richard Snelling, 81, of Marion, died Sunday, Sept. 11, 1994. Services are 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in Hillcrest Cemetery, Florence, with Pastor Bill Sherfy officiating.

He was born March 8, 1913, near Florence and had lived in Marion for the last 12 years. He retired working for 37 years for the Marion County road and bridge department. On Jan. 18, 1936, he and Dorothy Sidener were married in Hillsboro.

SOMMERS, JONATHAN W.

Jonathan W. Sommers, 85, of Towanda died Wednesday evening, Feb. 16, 1994 at Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Towanda United Methodist Church of Christ. Burial will follow at the Towanda Cemetery.

He was born Jan. 31, 1908 near Elbing the son of Abraham and Rose Mosiman Sommers. He was a farmer and rancher and had made his home in the Towanda area since 1936 moving there from Potwin. He was a member of the Towanda United Methodist Church of Christ in Towanda, Farm Bureau, Knife and Fork Club, and had served as the Clerk of the Towanda Township Board for 48 years. On Jan. 1, 1933, he married Helen Winters in Wichita.

Survivors include: wife, Helen, son, Robert of Towanda, daughters, Joan Green of El Dorado, Connie Haden of Newton, brothers Sam and John both of Potwin, sister Marion Regier of Elbing; 10 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

SONTAG, FLOYD H. "SING"

Floyd H. "Sing" Sontag, 79, of Atlanta died Thursday evening, June 23, 1994, at Wm. Newton Memorial Hospital in Winfield. Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Atlanta United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Latham Cemetery.

He was born Aug. 30, 1914, north of Atlanta, the son of Herman M. and Nancy M. Ensley Sontag and attended schools in the Ellet rural school. He was a farmer and rancher.

On April 3, 1949, he and Ada I. Miler were married in Winfield and they lived on their farm for 45 years. He was a member of the Atlanta United Methodist Church.

Survivors include: wife, Ada; sons, Ronald, Monte, both of Wichita, sister, Audrey Crabtree of Wichita, four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Bertie, Albert and Paul, and sisters, Ruby and Anna Watson.

Sarah Emma Soule, 91, homemaker, died Thursday, July 21, 1994 at Medicalodge of Eureka. Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at Campbell Kelley Funeral Home with Dr. Gilbert Daniel officiating. Burial will be in the Economy Cemetery, rural El Dorado.

She was born May 27, 1903 in Butler County, the daughter of B. H. and Addie B. (Ward) Cronk and she attended Pontiac School. On Jan. 27, 1920, she and Freeman Wilber Soule were married in Carthage, Mo., and they lived in Butler County until moving to Greenwood County in 1929. He died May 19,1961.

Raymond E. Sparks, 67, of Wichita, died Monday, Jan. 17, 1994 at Manor Care Nursing Home. Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Carlson Funeral Home. Burial will be in Sunset Lawns Cemetery.

He was born Jan. 1, 1927, near El Dorado, to Raleigh and Edith Seguine Sparks. He grew up in the El Dorado area and lived in Wichita for 25 years. He also had lived in Peabody. He was a retired teacher at Butler County Community College and had also done social service work in Wichita.

Survivors include: sisters, Mildred Schulte of Leon, Helen Graham Reynolds of El Dorado, Irma Eastham of Maybank, Texas; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers. (El Dorado Times, Jan. 18, 1994)

SPIVEY, GERALDINE POPE

Geraldine Pope Spivey, 82, of El Dorado, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 1994. Services are 11 a.m. Friday at Kirby-Morris Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Beaumont Cemetery.

She was born Oct. 6, 1911, in Wheeling, W. Va., the daughter of Sylvester and Sylvania Shuman, and lived in El Dorado since 1915. She was married to Theodore Pope. He preceded her in death. On Aug. 16, 1975, she and Robert J. Spivey were married. He died in 1993. She was a homemaker and a member of the Assembly of God Church in Leon.

C. Randy Swanson, 42, of Bayfield, Colo., died Thursday, Dec. 1, 1994 at his mother's home in Emporia. Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at Roberts Blue Barnett Funeral Home in Emporia with Rev. Dale Pracht officiating. Burial will be in Number Eight, east of Madison.

He was born March 1, 1952, in Emporia, the son of John Albin and Lorrine (Armstrong) Swanson. In 1970, he and Raina Hudson were married in Emporia. He was an electrician, supervisor and general foreman for Ross Rae Inc in Durango, Colo.

She was born May 10, 1898 in Welch, Okla., the daughter of Joseph Jasper and Catherine C. Marlin Thornburgh. In 1938, she and Oren Srader were married. He preceded her in death. She was a homemaker and lived in the El Dorado area for 70 years.

Survivors include sons, Albert Kearney of Tupela, Miss., Arthur Kearney Sr., of El Dorado, Eldon Srader of Independence, daughters, Peggy Burns of Joplin, Mo., Delores Srader of Wichita; 14 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, 35 great great grandchildren. He was born Feb. 13, 1919 in Midian, the son of William Joseph and Emma Thresa Ueding Stangle. He was a retired truck drier and had worked for Wichita Builders Supply. He retired in 1985. He moved to Wichita from Eureka in 1965. In 1938, he and Mary Edith Peckens were married in Yates Center.

He was born Nov. 2, 1940, in Buffalo, Okla., to Julius and Zelma (Edwards) Stebbins. He was a depot agent for the Frisco Railroad.

STONE, GLADYS LUCILLE

Gladys Lucille Stone, 84, of Raymore, Mo., died Wednesday, Aug. 24, 1994, at her home. Memorial services will be held later.

She was born Aug. 17, 1910, in Parsons, the daughter of George L and Edith Mae (Modlin) Jamison, and the family moved near Palo Dura Canyon southwest of Claude, Texas, and to Mound valley in 1917. She graduated from the Labette County Community High School in Altamont and attended Emporia State Teachers College and Pittsburg State Teachers College. She taught school in Labette County, in Cambridge and was a substitute teacher in El Dorado.

On June 1, 1935, she and Wilbur Lee Stone were married in Parsons and they lived in El Dorado until moving to Des Moines, Iowa and then to Kansas City in 1945. Her memberships included the County Club Christian Church and Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include: husband, Wilbur, sister, Fern Hassel of Hot Springs, Village, Ark. She was preceded in death by a son, Dr. Duane Stone. In lieu of flowers, memorials are to the Fellowship of John, Foxwood Springs, Raymore, Mo.

STRAUHS, HENRY GEORGE

Henry George Strauhs, 72, former Altanta resident, died Friday, June 24, 1994 at the Cedar Vale Community Hospital. Services will be 1:30 p.m. Sunday in the Atlanta Cemetery.

He was born Nov. 19, 1921, in El Dorado, the son of Carl and Bernetta (Bloom) Strauhs. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945. For more than 20 years he was a ranch hand for the Harvey Blair Ranch north of Atlanta and later for the Kincaid Ranch. He had also worked as a pumper for Misco Oil Co. in Douglass. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans.

Survivors include: son, Lonnie of Wichita, brothers, Carl of Blackwell, Okla., Edwin of Douglass, sister, Pauline Jamison of Atlanta; two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren.

STEPHENS, CHARLENE M.

Charlene M. Stephens, 63, of El Dorado, died today, Thursday, Nov. 3, 1994 at Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital in El Dorado. Services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Carlson Colonial Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Sunset Lawns Cemetery.

She was born June 1, 1931 in Alpena, Ark., to Bill (Willie) and Sue Tatum Smith. She was a homemaker and had lived in El Dorado since 1958, moving here from LaJunta, Colo. She was a member of the Church of Christ. She married Ernest Stepehns at Alpena, on June 2, 1948.

Survivors include her husband; a son, Rickie D. Stephens of El Dorado, four daughters, Lana G. Arpin of Manhattan, Sandra K. Cofield of Leon, Leashell Gish of El Dorado and Susan B. Hull of Owasso, Okla., 12 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two sons, Dabney K. Stephens, and Denny Stephens, a brother Jim Smith and a sister Viola Smith.

Memorials are suggested to the Church of Christ and may be left with Carlson Funeral Home, which is in charge of the services. (El Dorado Times, Nov. 3, 1994)

STOCK HAZEL B.

Hazel B. Stock, 92 of El Dorado died Sunday, Aug. 7, 1994 at Knutson Manor Nursing Center. Services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Sunset Lawns Cemetery.

She was born Dec. 12, 1901, in Toronto, the daughter of James Alexander and Louisa Ann Huff Willaby. She was a long time El Dorado resident and had been a postal clerk for almost 49years, retiring Dec. 31, 1971. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, EMB Club, Fidelitas Sundy School Class, Rachel Circle and had been a Sunday School teacher for many years.

On Nov. 19, 1924 she and P. Lyle Stock were married in El Dorado. He died Dec. 9, 1974.

Survivors include: several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one sister.

Mary Elizabeth Strausz, 48, homemaker, of Wichita, died Wednesday, March 9, 1994. services are 1:30 p.m. Friday at Hillside Funeral Home.

Survivors include: husband, Jerry, daughters, Kim Mainz, Kelli Barnes, both of Wichita, Angie Jones of El Dorado; father, John Moore, brothers, Bill Moore, Terry Moore, sisters, Linda Norman, Marva Moore, Vicki Landwehr, Marcia Moore, all of Wichita, grandmother, Ruth Waller of Highland, N.C., 11 grandchildren.

STUART, DOLA U.

Dola U. Stuart, 75, of El Dorado, died Thursday, May 12, 1994, at her home. Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Carlson Funeral Home. Burial will be in Sunset Lawns Cemetery.

She was born Aug. 1, 1918 in Alton, Mo., the daughter of Della and Violet Jackson bell and had lived in this area for several years.

She was married to Bill Harris, who died in 1942. On July 9, 1960, she and Oscar Stuart were married in Eureka. She was a member of the Church of Christ.

Survivors include: husband, Oscar, daughter, Linda Lou Lakin of El Dorado, three grandchildren, four great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, four sisters, one granddaughter, and one great granddaughter.

STURDEVANT, JAMES W.

James W. Sturdevant, 72, of Chanute, formerly of El Dorado, died Sunday, July 24, 1994 at his home. Services will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Chanute First Baptist Church with Rev. Richard Qualls officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

He was born Nov. 16, 1921, in Chanute, the son of Sam Sturdevant and Rita Carver. He graduated from Altoona High School, Chanute Junior College and Kansas State University. During WWII he served in the U.S. Navy, On March 13, 1943, he and Phyllis I. Markham were married in Chanute.

He had been a county agent in the counties of Chase, Crawford and Butler and for 15 years he worked in the banking business including the First National Bank in El Dorado. He retired in 1982 from the Raymondville, Mo bank and moved to Chanute in 1991. his memberships included, the First Baptist Church, veterans of Foreign wars Post 1654, Gideons and Kansas State University Alumni.

Survivors include: wife, Phyllis, son Richard of Lawrence, brother, William of Tulsa, Okla., five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Sandra Sommers.

SUMMERS, CAROLEE ANN

Carolee Ann Summers, homemaker of Salina died Saturday, July 16, 1994. Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at Geisendorf-Rush Smith Funeral Home.

Survivors include: husband, John, sons, John Jr. of El Dorado, Ronald of Albuquerque; daughters, Tonja Seusy of El dorado, Colene Gress of Fort Scott, Deborah Smith of Richland, N.C., mother, Blanche Green of Salina, brothers, Raymond Green Jr of Overland Park, R. Max Green of Olathe; nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren.

SUNDGREN, NORMAN E.

Norman E. Sundgren, 73, of Rosalia, died Monday morning, Jan. 10, 1994, at his home. Memorial services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church.

He was born July 24, 1920 at Falun, the son of Ebbie and Anna Marie Anderson Sundgren. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was a rancher, stockman and farmer and had lived in Butler County for 46 years after moving from Saline County. On Feb. 15, 1947, he and Charmian Gish were married in El Dorado. His memberships included the First Presbyterian Church, Jaycees, Farm Bureau and he was a 4-H leader.

Survivors include: wife, Charmian, sons, Steve of Rosalia, David, Joe both of El Dorado, daughters, Susan Worrell of Wichita, Jane Carmichael of Broken Arrow, Okla., Diana Pierson of Wills Point, Texas; twin brother, Julian of Falun, sisters, Marguerite Cox of Salina, Beatrice Bret of Denver, 12 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers. Memorials are to the First Presbyterian Church and Hospice Inc. Carlson Funeral Home has the arrangements.
