SCHNELLER, DOLL A.

PROBE SCHNELLER DEATH IS HALTED

County Officers Close Quietely Conducted Investigation of Past Ten Days

A quietly conducted investigation, which has been under way for the past ten days by the office of Sheriff E. E. McKnight into the mysterious death of Doll A. Schneller, aged 44 years, whose lifeless body was found in Dry Creek, about seven miles northwest of Augusta, the morning of October 14, after he had been missing for a month, has been brought to a close, it was announced this morning by the sheriff.

The jury, which sat at the inquest into the death of Mr. Schneller, found that the El Doradoan came to his death on the night of September 12, the day he disappeared from a construction camp, about two miles from the place where the body was found, in a manner and from a cause unknown. Only a few witnesses were called at the inquest and the testimony of a majority of them corroborated each other. It was brought out plainly that Mr. Schneller had been ill for a number of days and it was believed by some that he wandered from the camp and fell into the creek, where he was drowned. The body was found lying in shallow water, face downward.

Sheriff McKnight and his deputies, however, decided to everything in their power to clear up the mysterious death, and have spent much time on the case the past ten days. It was believed by some that Mr. Schneller might have met his death from a gun, and the latter would be found in the creek channel. Accordingly, the officers attempted to drain that portion of the channel where the body was found. A number of ditches were dug, but with little success. Water continued to flow in to the place that it was desired to drain almost as rapidly as it flowed through the ditches. The rains last week also handicapped the officers. It was planned to drag the creek channel but this has been found to be impossible and the officers decided last evening after visiting the creek again to give up the task.
