SAIA, NIKKI

El Dorado police were summoned to Walnut River Apartments on Monday night after a 29-year-old woman was found dead in one of the units.

Nikki Saia was discovered by a family member who called police around 7.

The police treated Apt. 209, where Saia's body was discovered unattended, as a crime scene Monday night.

However, Capt. Justin Phillips with the El Dorado Police Department said there was nothing to indicate foul play in Saia's death.
The cause of her death has not been determined. An autopsy will be performed today or tomorrow at Sedgwick County Forensic Center. Phillips said that any time someone dies unattended there is an investigation.

'The departments thoughts and prayers go out to Nikki's family during this time," Phillips said. (El Dorado Times, February 15, 2006)

SANDER, EMILY

EL DORADO, Kan. (AP) - A body found in Kansas appears to be that of a missing college student who led a secret life as an Internet porn star, police said Thursday.

Authorities said the preliminary physical description of the body found about 50 miles east of El Dorado matches that of missing college student Emily Sander. Investigators refused to give details about the state of the body or how it was found.

Police Chief Tom Boren said the cause of death was not yet known. An autopsy is planned.

Sander, 18, was last seen leaving an El Dorado bar Friday with a man who has been the focus of a nationwide search since police found large quantities of blood in a Kansas motel room where he was staying.

Prior to finding the body, investigators said they had not found a link between Sander and her activities as an online porn star named Zoey Zane. But publicity about her explicit photos brought a flood of tips, many of them false leads.

"No tips were generated from it," Boren said.

Sander, who attended Butler Community College, left the bar with Israel Mireles, 24. Authorities are looking for him and his 16-year-old pregnant girlfriend.

The rental car Mireles was driving was found abandoned Tuesday in Vernon, Texas, where he has relatives. (High Point Enterprise, NC) November 30, 2007, Page A08)

Investigators confirmed Saturday that the body found near Toronto earlier this week is Emily Sander, the 18-year-old Butler Community College student missing since Nov. 23.

Sander's body was positively identified by a forensic orthodontist, El Dorado Police Chief Tom Boren said in an e-mailed statement.
Sander's grandfather, Clem Sander of El Dorado, said Saturday that family members were told Friday and police asked the family to let them release the news.

"That's what we were praying for: get her found, get a closure on this and take it from there," Clem Sander said.

But knowing does little to ease the pain, he said.

"It's going to be a bad day today," he said. "You've got to face reality here. . . . It's tough."

Boren said Saturday that a forensic examination was conducted and the autopsy was completed late Friday. Dental records shipped from Texas, where Emily Sander previously lived, helped confirm her identity.

Boren said local authorities didn't expect to get the records until Monday, but they arrived Friday.

The autopsy results and the cause of death have been sealed by Butler County Attorney Jan Satterfield. She declined to comment on Saturday. Late Friday, she had said no homicide charges had been filed.

The body was found Thursday along U.S. 54 in Woodson County, about 50 miles east of El Dorado. Near the body, investigators found the bedspread that had been missing from Israel Mireles' El Dorado motel room.

The search continues for Mireles, 24, who has been named a suspect in Sander's death. Boren's statement said investigators are re-interviewing witnesses, family and associates of Mireles and his pregnant 16-year-old girlfriend, who is believed to be with him.
Investigators are still processing leads and evidence, Boren said, and are working with state and federal authorities in the search for Mireles and his girlfriend. Authorities remain concerned for her safety.

Mireles was born in Mexico and has relatives there, authorities have said, and he may be on his way back there.

A 2007 Ford Taurus, which had been rented in El Dorado and which authorities thought Mireles was using, was found Tuesday in Vernon, Texas, where he also has relatives. Vernon is about 50 miles northwest of Wichita Falls.

Funeral arrangements for Emily Sander are pending. Clem Sander said her father is traveling from Texas to help her mother plan for the service.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact the El Dorado Police Department at 316-321-9120, the state crime tip line at 800-KSCRIME or the El Dorado Crime Stoppers at 316-321-1080. (Wichita Eagle, December 2, 2007)

Interment will follow the services in Walnut Valley Memorial Park in El Dorado. Visitation with the family will be from 6 to 8 Wednesday evening at Carlson Funeral Home.

She was born Feb. 26, 1989, in Olathe, the daughter of Russ Sander and Clara Travnichek. She was a student at Butler and attended El Dorado High School for one year. She loved dancing, music, shopping so much liked animals.

Survivors include: her parents, Russ and Tammy Sander of Lakehills, Texas; Clara Biediger of El Dorado; brothers, Jarod Sander of Lakehills, Texas, Jacob Sander of El Dorado and Christian Olson of Lakehills; a sister, Stephanie Olson, of Lakehills; grandparents, Clem and Shirley Sander of El Dorado, Emerson and Myrtle Travnichek of Rosalia and Darlene Raddatz of Redwood Falls, Minn.; a nephew, Samuel Sander of San Antonio, Texas; and many uncles, aunts and cousins.

The Kansas attorney general's office is taking a lead role in the investig ation and prosecution of the Emily Sander homicide case, officials said Monday.

Butler County Attorney Jan Satterfield has requested the involvement of the attorney general's office, El Dorado Police Chief Tom Boren said in an e-mailed statement Monday.

Still, Satterfield will "continue to be involved, heavily," said Ashley Anstaett, spokeswoman for Attorney General Paul Morrison.

Because of the complexity of the Sander case, the state office is getting involved, Anstaett said.

Sander, an 18-year-old Butler Community College student, was last seen the night of Nov. 23 leaving the Retreat bar near El Dorado with Israel Mireles, 24.

Her body was found on Thursday by the side of U.S. 54 in Woodson County, about 50 miles east of El Dorado.

Mireles was named a suspect in her death. He and his 16-year-old pregnant girlfriend are thought to be traveling together. The 2007 Ford Taurus that Mireles rented was found in Vernon, Texas, where he has relatives.

Complicating the search for Mireles is that authorities think he could either be headed to Mexico or already there.

For months now, the attorney general's office has been involved in the prosecution in the slaying of Jodi Sanderholm, a Cowley College student.

Morrison is the lead prosecutor in the Sanderholm case. It's not yet known whether Morrison will be directly involved in the Sander case, Anstaett said.

Meanwhile, services for Sander were set for 1 p.m. Thursday at Carlson Funeral Home in El Dorado. Visitation with family members will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

The college is sponsoring vigils in honor of Sander. Vigils will be held at 6:30 p.m. today in the 5000 Building of the college's Andover campus, 715 E. 13th. At the main campus on Haverhill Road in El Dorado, a vigil will be held at 6:30 p.m. today in the Kansas Room of the 1500 Building.

Investigators have asked that anyone with information about the case call El Dorado police at 316-321-9120, Crime Stoppers at 316-321-1080 or the state crime tip line, 800-KSCRIME. (Wichita Eagle, December 4, 2007)

EL DORADO (AP) -- More than 400 mourners braved bitter winter winds Thursday to say goodbye to a Butler Community College student whose disappearance sparked a national manhunt for her alleged killer even as searchers looked for her body.

Emily Sander was laid to rest at the local cemetery on the outskirts of this Kansas community where she lived a seemingly ordinary life, working as a secretary at an electric company by day and going to business management classes by night.

Sander, 18, was last seen alive on Nov. 23 as she left an El Dorado bar with a man police have identified as Israel Mireles, 24. Her disappearance drew nationwide attention after it was discovered that she also led a secret life as an Internet porn model named Zoey Zane.

But the photos that moved the people to tears at her funeral were those of her everyday life in Kansas: childhood photos of family at Christmas, graduation photos with family and friends, even the silly photos of Sander sticking her tongue out for the camera.

The teenager's funeral opened with a recording of a Brooks & Dunn song, "God Must Be Busy."

"God takes pity on us in our town of El Dorado," the Rev. Brian Bebak of St. John's Parish in El Dorado told an overflow crowd attending the closed-casket funeral service.

Her family did not speak at the service. The family photo display was punctuated by loud sobs from people in the audience.

"God is grieving with each one of us today. ... He is in no way indifferent to our loss," Bebak told them.

Bebak tried to comfort mourners, telling them Sander is spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year.

"Forgive whatever sins she may have committed in human weakness," Bebak prayed.

Authorities are looking for Mireles and his 16-year-old girlfriend, Victoria Martens. Mireles was seen leaving a bar with Sander on Nov. 23, and her body was found six days later.

Searchers found Sander's body about 50 miles east of El Dorado as police retraced the route they believed Mireles took to pick up his girlfriend in Baxter Springs.

The search for Mireles and Martens continued on Thursday. Family and police fear for the safety of Martens, who is seven months pregnant with a baby girl she and Mireles have named Isabelle Marie. (Chanute Tribune, December 7, 2007)
