Gail C. Smith, 89, of El Dorado, died Saturday evening, Sept. 10, 2005 at Allen Memorial Hospital. Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at Kirby-Morris Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Walnut Valley Memorial Park Cemetery.
Gail was born April 21, 1916, in Hunnewell, Okla., one of 11 children born to James W. and Inez (Stevens) Smith. He grew up in Braman, Okla., and graduated from the Braman High School. He was very proud of his service to his country. He fought and was wounded in the Battle of Normandy during World War II. He received the Purple Heart. After returning from service he married Helen Looney in 1949 at Blackwell, Okla. They lived in Wichita for 17 years and moved to El Dorado in 1966. Gail was always involved with fuel distribution. He had service stations both in Wichita and El Dorado. He also owned the Robo Carwash and Gail and Helen's Convenience Store.
Gail had a life membership in the V.F.W. the American Legion and the N.R.A. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge. He loved to hunt and fish and be with his family.
Survivings include: his wife, Helen of the home; son, Greg and his wife Frankie of El Dorado; daughters, Elise and her husband Ben Mitchell and Kathy Fowler, all of El Dorado; sister, Lila Taylor Wilson of Braman, Okla.; grandchildren, Scott Carpenter, Lisa Coffin, Travis Fowler, James Smith, Stephenie Taylor and Kirby Mitchell; and 11 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one grandchild.

SMITH, MARIAN ALICE
Marian Alice Smith, 96, of El Dorado, passed away Monday evening, Feb. 20, 2006 at a local nursing home. Services are 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 27, 2006 at the First United Methodist Church of El Dorado. Burial will follow at Walnut Valley Memorial Park Cemetery.
Marian was born Sept. 19, 1909, on the family farm near Howard, the daughter of Frank L. and Jennie (Dyer) Sliker. She grew up in Howard and graduated from Howard High School. She attended Emporia Teachers' College in Emporia and then taught in a one-room country schoolhouse near Howard.
Marian was united in marriage to Harry W. Smith on April 19, 1931 at the family's home. They moved to El Dorado in 1931. Harry preceded her in death on Dec. 17, 1979. Marian was a devoted wife, mother, homemaker and community volunteer. She also worked as a writer for the weekly Butler County News, office staff in the Register of Deeds office and a clerk at Godding's Book & Office Store.
Marian was a very active member of the First United Methodist Church. She was the church's Parish Visitor for many years. She was a Worthy Matron of Eastern Star, a member of the local Book Club, the Hospital Auxiliary, Meals on Wheels and P.E.O. She loved spending her time cooking, knitting, sewing and helping her neighbors and friends.
Survivors include: two daughters, Marilyn Dorst and husband John of Chillicothe, Mo., and Dorthy Ann Fanestil and husband Darrell of LaJolla, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister.

Violet M. "Vi" Smith, 83, of El Dorado, died Friday, Feb. 22, 2002 at her home in Wichita. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Walnut Valley Memorial Park.
She was born Feb. 11, 1919 to P. Erle and Blanche (Loomis) Hampton in El Dorado. She was a retired elementary teacher and also had been a bookkeeper for K.T. Oil in El Dorado.
On Feb. 25, 1945, she was married to Harold S. "Bud" Smith in El Dorado. They lived in Marquette from 1946 to 1953, moving to Wichita at that time. She and her husband also owned a home in El Dorado, where they stayed part time prior to his death on Dec. 28, 1983.
She was a member of the First Church of Christ Scientist, Wichita; Andrina Chapter Order of the Eastern Star; White Shrine of Jerusalem; Farm Bureau; Butler County Desk and Derrick; and the Mother Church of Christ Scientist in Boston.
Survivors include: a brother, James L. Hampton of Colleyville, Texas; sisters, Fayette L. Hampton of Wichita and Grace Jones of El Dorado; and a number of nieces and nephews, including Ron Swigart of Bartlesville, Okla., and Patricia Swigart Beets of Dakota Dunes, S.D.
She also was preceded in death by her parents.

SPPER, IDA JANE SHADOIN
Ida Jane Shadoin Speer, 63, of El Dorado and formerly of Towanda, died Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004, at her home. Celebration of her life is scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 23, at the Towanda United Methodist Church of Christ.
She was born Sept. 12, 1940, in Westmoreland, Kan., the daughter of Herbert A. and Agnes N. (Aubert) Wege. Ida and her family moved to the El Dorado area when she was young. She graduated from El Dorado High School in 1958. She served her country in the U.S. Air Force. While living in Corvallis, Ore., she attended two years at Linn-Benton Community College. She was united in marriage to Phillip W. Shadoin on Dec. 24, 1959, in El Dorado. From this union five children were born. Ida was united in marriage to William E. Speer on Feb. 27, 1981, in Miami, Okla. He preceded her in death on Jan. 22, 1988. Ida lived in El Dorado; Kansas City; Napa Valley, Calif.; Corvallis, Ore.; Towanda; and finally returning to El Dorado. She was employed by the state of Kansas for more than 23 years in the drivers license examiner office of Butler County.
She was a member of the Towanda United Methodist Church of Christ, United Methodist Women, Bible study, book club, Nakomis, and the Red Hat Society. She enjoyed playing games, especially Scrabble, Halloween, and spending time with her family.
Survivors include her mother, Agnes Boese of El Dorado; two sons, Steven Shadoin of El Dorado, and Phillip Shadoin and his wife Pamela of Crete, Neb.; three daughters, Rebecca and her husband Matt O'Hearn of Wichita, Linda and her husband Brad Grier of Omaha, and Carol and her husband Tim Gale of Tiskilwa, Ill.; two brothers, Herbert Wege Jr. of Oxford, Kan., and Lynn Wege of El Dorado; three sisters, Ada Soden of El Dorado, Barbara Boese of Wichita, and Mary Smith of Eureka; and 14 grandchildren.

She was born Nov. 20, 1932, in Garrison, the daughter of Martin and Alice (Erickson) Burklund. She grew up in Olsburg and graduated from the Olsburg High School in 1951. She was married Nov. 13, 1955, to Clyde Murray Spires in Olsburg. She was a payroll clerk for Beech Aircraft for more than 37 years before retiring in 1992. She was a member of the First Christian Church of El Dorado and a Past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed sewing, bowling and traveling with Clyde.

Survivors: wife, Donna; sons, Matt Frazier of El Dorado, Steven of Hobe Sound, Fla.; daughters, April Scotts of El Dorado, Brenda Schmidt of Fort Carson, Colo.; sisters, Charlene Blanscet of Missouri City, Texas, Mary Lou Feilmore of Minneapolis, Minn.; three grandchildren. STRONG, EARL E.
Earl E. Strong, 86, Augusta, retired postman with the U.S. Postal Service, died on Thursday, May 19, 2005.
Graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, May 23, at Walnut Valley Cemetery in El Dorado.
Visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. with family present from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, May 22, at Dunsford Funeral Home in Augusta.
The World War II veteran was born on Oct. 11, 1918 in Cedarpoint.
Survivors include: son, Larry Strong of Wichita; daughters, Sharon Malan and Shirley Kirkpatrick, both of Augusta; brother, Truman Strong of Great Bend; sister, Edna Mae Campbell of Fort Scott; grandchildren, Darren Malan, Paula Nichols, Josh Kirkpatrick, Adam Kirkpatrick; five great-granddaughters; one great-grandson.

SUMMERS, DEBRA ANN
Debra Ann Summers, 44, of Timnath, Colo., formerly of Topeka, died May 26, 2009 at Poudre Valley Hospital in Ft. Collins after a brief battle with lung cancer. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church in El Dorado.
Debbie was preceded in death by her father, Harold Davenport, Jr. She is survived by her husband, George; three children, Crystal, Christopher and Carolyn; mother, Nancy and husband, Charlie Ketterman of Rose Hill; brother, Brad (and wife, Sheryl) Davenport of Wichita; and sister, Sherry (and husband, Stan) Cowan of Pflugerville, Texas.

Marlin "Mark" Swartz, 50, El Dorado, died Thursday, Feb. 11, 2010 at his home. Celebration of his life will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Temple Baptist Church. Graveside services will be before the celebration of his life in Walnut Valley Memorial Park at 10 a.m. The family will receive friends and relatives from 6 to 8 Monday evening at Carlson Funeral Home.
