SCAMMON

Scammon, an incorporated city in Cherokee County, is located on the St. Louis & San Francisco R. R., 8 miles north of Columbus, the county seat. It has a bank, a weekly newspaper (the Scammon Miner), a theater, churches and schools, a large number of retail establishments, telegraph and express offices, and an international money order post office with one rural route. This is one of the newer towns in Cherokee county. It was founded about 1885. In 1890 it was an incorporated town with 748 inhabitants. In 1900 the population was 1,549, and in 1910 it was 2,233. Coal is an excellent quality underlies the lands in the vicinity and is extensively mined. This is one of the largest coal shipping points in southwestern Kansas.
