REVERAND FATHER BATLER DEAD

Friends of Father Tiben Think He May be Appointed Bishop.

A cable from Rome says that Rev. Father Batler, bishop-elect of the Roman Catholic diocese of Concordia, Kan., died there on Friday of intestinal paralysis. The deceased was to have been concreted bishop by Cardinal Batolli today.

The appointment of Father Batler was unexpected, and some one to fill the vacancy will likely be as unthought-of. Father Batler was from Chicago and had only recently gone to Rome to be consecrated. There is a coincident in the fact that Father Riley in 1888 was to have been concreted bishop of the same diocese and had gone to Rome for that purpose. He was taken sick and died on July 26 of the same year of the same disease that Father Batler died of.

It would be no great surprise to the friends of Father Tiben if he should be appointed bishop for this diocese. Father Tiben was seen last night and when asked about a surprise to him should ne receive the appointment. He did not seem to think that it was at all likely, saying that it would only be conjuncture, as there were hundreds to make the selection from. (The Wichita daily Eagle., July 18, 1897, Page 5, transcribed by Maurene Miller)
