TRUANCY OFFICER SUES COFFEY CO.

County Truancy Officer Henry Jackson has brought suit in the District Court at Burlington against the board of county commissioners of Coffey county praying judgment for $16 with interest at 6 percent from May 7, 1907. The case brings up several questions, there being very little if any dispute as to the facts. The commissioners turned down Mr. Jackson's bills for 23 days spent at office work, writing letters etc., the bill having been O.K'd by County Superintendent Lane. Mr. Jackson insists that the bill was just that the work had been done under the direction and at the request of the county superintendent and that he was entitled to the money. Excelsior Springs, Mo., Nov. 4---The body of a man who hanged himself in the city jail here, Nov. 2, has been identified as that of Arthur E. Hazen of Leroy, Kansas, whose financial operations in "check kiting" resulted in the closing of the People's State bank of LeRoy, Kan., and the Farmers' State bank at Neosho Falls, Kan.

Arrested here charged with attempting to pass a worthless check, Hazen, who gave his name to the police as "C. H. Johnson", committed suicide by hanging himself with his own necktie in his cell.

Hazen's "check kiting" operations are said to have totalled one and one-half million dollars, but he died almost penniless.
