Mrs. Charlotte (Lottie) Phillips, 70, 826 S. Seventh St., died Sunday night at Memorial Hospital. She was born Oct. 14, 1898, at Cedar Vale to John and Julie Bowen. She married Fred Wayne Phillips on July 6, 1958, in Arkansas City, and he died in 1960. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. A. L. (Audrey) Miller, Kansas City, Mo., one granddaughter, two great-grandchildren, and one cousin, Garland Cunningham, Rt. 2. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Grant-Elder Funeral Home with Rev. Lewis A. McPherren officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery. Child Victim of Tornado Dies
Sylvia Ann Mangrum, six months old daughter of Damon R. Mangrum, a victim of the Udall tornado, died Thursday at
11:57 a.m. at Newton Memorial hospital where she was admitted at 2:15 a.m. following the storm. The baby was born
at Newton Memorial hospital Nov. 17, 1954.
The mother, LaVone Mangrum, and another child Michael Ray, 4, lost their lives in the tornado. Identification of
the bodies was made by the husband and father. The bodies are all in Wichita where funeral services will be held.

Mrs. Anna Otellia Carlson, who died at 7:50 a.m.
May 26, at a Winfield hospital of injuries received in the Udall tornado, was born June 17, 1882, the daughter
of Mary and Carl Carlson in Klockaregard, Hjerflanda, Jonkoping, Smaland, Sweden.
Mrs. Carlson was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church in Sweden, and as a girl she came to America. She
was united in marriage to Frank A. Calrson, who preceded her in death in 1918. She later was united in marriage
to Pete Carlson, who died in 1920. To these unions five children were born.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Mary Scott of Ottawa and Mrs. Ruth Newman of Yates Center; three sons, Carl
and Arthur of Udall and Edd of Winfield; six grandchildren, Elaine Newman of Wichita, Karen Scott of Ottawa, Aletha
and Carrie Carlson of Udall and Renae and Bruce Carlson of Winfield, and one brother, Albert Carlson of Omaha,

Mrs. Louise Yarnall Rites Held on Friday
Funeral services for Mrs. Louise Yarnall, 90, of Latham, were held at 2 p.m. Friday in the Latham Christian Church
with the Rev. Dan LeMasters officiating. Burial was in Latham Cemetery.
Mrs. Yarnall died early Wednesday morning in Allen Memorial hospital in El Dorado after an illness of ten days.
Mrs. Yarnall was born July 30, 1864 at St. Louis, Mo., and was married to Sterling P. Yarnall April 38, 1881, in
Carroll County, Missouri. Mr. Yarnall died in 1916.
Mrs. Yarnall has been a Latham resident 14 years, moving there from Missouri. She was an active member of the Latham
Christian church and a charter member of the Latham Eastern Star.
She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Lillian Ratliff of Kansas City, Mo., and Mrs. Nellie Shaffer of Latham;
two sons, O.G. Yarnall and S.A. Yarnall both of Wichita; five grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren. Two

Vernon C. Deets, 83, of Burden, died Thursday morning,
Oct. 18, 2007, at the Dexter Care Center. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 22, 2007, at the
Burden United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at the Dexter Cemetery. Friends may call from 1-5 p.m. Sunday,
Oct. 21, at the funeral home. The family will greet visitors from 1-2 p.m. Born on Aug. 26, 1924, in Portland,
Kan., he was the son of Ray and Pearl (Supernaw) Deets. He was raised in Portland and Dexter, graduating from Dexter
High School. On July 10, 1946, he married Ava L. Trobaugh in Winfield. The couple made their first home on a farm
in rural Dexter and later in the Burden area. He retired from farming and ranching in 2000. He was a member of
the Burden United Methodist Church since 1951. Vernon is survived by his wife; his son, Dale Deets, and his wife,
Heather, of Burden; his daughter, Julie Hutchinson, and her husband, Raymond of Arkansas City; his brother, Larry
Deets, and his wife, Jackie, of Burden; his grandchildren, Stetson, Coty, Michelle, Rachele, John, Nicholas and
Isaac; and his great-grandchildren, Nathan, Joshua, Hailey, Avisa, Macalie, Dakota, Jaden, Kayla and Ryann. In
addition to his parents, Vernon was preceded in death by a brother, Donald, a sister, Donna, and a great-granddaughter,
Lisa Marie.
Memorials have been established in Mr. Deet’s name for the Burden United Methodist Church, Dexter Care and Center
and Hospice Care of Kansas. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction

Died: - March, 18, 1888. Anthony Nicolas, father of John B. Nicolas and Irena Coats, at the residence of John B. Nicholas, one mile South of Dexter, Sunday morning at four o'clock, March 18th. His remains were followed to the Dexter cemetery Monday morning, by his children, grand-children and other friends. He was taken sick Tuesday morning, and passed away as though in a sound sleep. Edward E. Berger, 93, died Aug. 22, in Wheat Road
Good Samaritan Center. He was born March 11, 1885, in Udall to Samuel W. and Maggie Berger. He was a retired farmer.

Mrs. J.W. Chenoweth died at her home in Udall Saturday
morning, May sixth, 1911, after several weeks illness.

Sinia Berger, 92, of Rt. 5, died Wednesday in Wheat
Road Good Samaritan Center. She was born April 14, 1883, in Udall to Samuel and Maggie Berger and spent her entire
life in Cowley County.
She is survived by one brother, Edward Berger, and one sister, Daisy Cooper, both of Winfield; two nieces and three
nephews.
Graveside services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Udall Cemetery by the Rev. Paul Mugler. The body

Noted citizen of Grenola shot by mistake
The night watchman took him for a desperado and shot him. H. M. Hayes mayor of Grenola also cashier of the Grenola State Bank was shot early Tuesday morning by mistake. He was hurried to as hospital at Winfield but died on the way.

Last Sunday morning, the good people of Winfield were started by the news that Mr. Wood father of B. F. Wood of the firm of Bliss & Wood had committed suicide. Mr. Wood senior, has for some time been slightly deranged, though not enough so to need any special care. On Sunday morning last he insisted that the entire family should go to church, he alone remaining at home. When the family returned from church they made the horrible discovery that the aged gentleman had hung himself in the cellar. Life had been extinct some time when the body was found. Merle E. Hutson, 84, formerly of the East Belton community, died Thursday afternoon (June 25, 1981) at Medicalodge East.
Born November 28, 1896 in Galesburg, Illinois, to George C. and Etta Mae Griffith Hutson, she moved to the Arkansas City area in 1920 where she and her twin sister, Marie, operated the café in the AC Office Building for several years.
A collector of salt and pepper shakers, she collected 8,000 pairs. A niece still has 5,000 pairs. She was also a pen pal to many people in this area and about 20 people around the world.
She attended the Grandview Methodist Church. Survivors include a niece, Betty McCall, Torrence, California, and a nephew, Stephen W. Atkins, Corpus Christi, Texas and a brother-in-law, Lennie M. Atkins, Chetopa.
She was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters, Marie, Alice and Ruth.
Graveside services will be at 11:30 am Monday in the Memorial Lawn Cemetery under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman-Oldroyd Funeral Home. (Submitted by unknown)
Jeff Chancellor, 62, Route 3, Udall, died May 29,
at William Newton Memorial Hospital.
Born April 3, 1927, at Bismark, Ark., he was the son of Rush and Ada (Allen) Chancellor. He was raised and educated
in Bismark, graduating from Bismark High School. He worked several jobs before serving in the Korean war.
During his tour of duty, he began his professional music career, touring the country with a country and western
band.
On Nov. 12, 1969, he married Teresa Holmes of Durant, Okla. The couple moved to Dallas, where they ran a repair
business. In 1980, they moved to Udall, where Chancellor continued to work as a repairman.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Udall and was a third-degree Mason in Oxford Masonic Lodge.
He is survived by his wife, daughters Catherine and Tanya of the home, and a brothers Harold and Franklin Chancellor
and sisters Ruthel Fendly and Lucille Dooley, all of Bismark.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 1, at the First Baptist Church in Udall. Burial will be in Ninnescah
Cemetery, also in Udall. Miles Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Elsie Hoober, Pioneer Resident, Dies
Mrs. Elsie Myrtle Hoober, 78, resident of the Arkansas City vicinity for 60 years, died at 4:30 a.m. Sunday at her home, 1017 South sixth street.
She was born Oct. 10, 1879, and came to Arkansas City from Rock, Kansas.
Surviving relatives include, one son, W.F. Daniels, Paw Paw, Mich.; two sisters, Mrs. Vera Welters to Tacoma, Wash., and Mrs. Ed Tanton of Ark.; one cousin, George D. Wilkerson, of El Dorado, who had been visiting her to care for her since July.

Mrs. Hoober Dies After 50 Years In Arkansas City
Mrs. Ethelbert Hoober, resident of Arkansas City for 50 years, died at her home, 1017 South Sixth street, Monday morning. Mrs. Hoober and her husband John Hoober, who died here several years ago, came to Kansas in a covered wagon from Indiana and pitched a tent on the place where she died Monday having lived at that location for 50 years.
Mrs. Hoober was born in Lafayette, Ind., June 14, 1846 and would have been 86 years old June 14. She is survived by three daughters, Miss Elsie, Mrs. May Tanton and Mrs. Vera Welters of this city and Sherman Hoober of Tuyallup, Wash., and 11 grandchildren.

John Harvey Hoober In A.C. 45 Years, Dies
John Harvey Hoober, 84 years old, a resident of this city and immediate locality, 45 years died at 10:30 o’clock
this morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mary Tanton, 1520 South Sixth street. Mr. Hoober, a retired farmer
and gardener, had been ill several years. His home for many years was at 1017 South Sixth street. Mr. Hoober was
a native of Down county, Ohio. He and Mrs. Hoober were married 62 years ago in Winnimac, Ind. Surviving relatives
are the wife; three daughters, Mrs. Tanton, Mrs. Vera Welter and Miss Elsie Hoober, all of this city; two sons,
Joe and Sherman Hoober, both residing in Puyallup, Wash., and two brothers, Gus Hoober, Sharon, KS., and Lewis
Hoober, address unknown.
No Funeral arrangements have been made, pending word from the sons. Burial will be in Riverview. The Grant Funeral

Mrs. McGinnis Dead
Mrs. Jane McGinnis, aged eighty-two years, passed away at her home near Udall. Death was due to old age. The funeral will be held Sunday at Seely, with Rev. W.C. Thad McCabe, 79, of Route 3, Winfield, died July
4, 2000 at Via Christie Regional Medical Center – St. Francis Campus in Wichita.
Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Miles Funeral Service. Military graveside services will be performed at Memorial
Lawn Cemetery in Arkansas City.
Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 9 p.m. Thursday.
A memorial has been established with the World War II Veterans Memorial. Contributions may be made through the

McCabe was born Sept. 25, 1920, in Geuda Springs, to Ruth (Quinn) and Marion D. McCabe. He graduated from Geuda
Springs High School in 1938.
During World War II he served in the Fifth Armored Division of the U.S. Army where he received many honors and
medals, including the Bronze Star. He then joined the U.S. Air Force and served in both Korean and Vietnam wars.
He retired from the Air Force as a senior master sergeant on June 1, 1973 following 25 years of service.
In 1973 he moved to Winfield. On Jan 4, 1989, he married Vera Barth in Rockport, Texas. They wintered in Texas.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion and the Elks
Lodge, all of Winfield, and the Masonic Lodge in Fort Worth, Texas.
Survivors include his wife, Vera McCabe, Winfield; two sons, Steven Marion McCabe, Portland, Ore., and Dean Logan
McCabe, Lancaster, Calif.; two stepdaughters, Leanna Wallerstedt, California, and Sandra Lee Allen, Tampa, Fla.;
a brother, Logan McCabe, Lubbock, Texas; a sister, Margaret Christian, Wellington; three grandsons, two step grandchildren

Newell E. Osterhout, 721 Menor, died at 5:25 a.m.
this morning at Red Brick Lodge.
Osterhout was born Aug. 29, 1882, Winfield, the son of Mr. George A. and Laura Osterhout. He had lived all of his
life in Winfield and for several years he operated a restaurant. He married Rhoda J. Crawford, June 30, 1915 in
Winfield. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Odd Fellows, Rebekahs, Patriarchs Militant and Encampment.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; one son, Don L., of Wichita; two daughters, Mrs. R. A. (Peggy) Lund, Dallas,
Tex., and Mrs. J.M. (Jane) Tindall, Odessa, Tex.; nine grandchildren and one great grandchild; one sister, Mrs.
Premilla Gover, Zenosville, Ind., and one brother, Fred A., Vista, Calf.

Ambrose Shea died yesterday afternoon at 1:25 o’clock
at the White Hall rest home.
He was born July 1, 1889, at Terre Haute, Ind., the son of Daniel and Katherine Shea. He moved to Winfield 10 years
ago from Osawatomie.
Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mary’s Cemetery with the Rev. Father Ivan Eck officiating.

Alma G. Hutto, 0101 Massachusetts, died this morning
at 1 o’clock at William Newton Hospital.
She was born Sept. 18, 1890, at Great Plains, Mo., the daughter of William T. and Melvina Busby. May 1, 1918, she
was married to Fred T. Hutto in Winfield. He preceded her in death in 1960. She has lived in the Winfield vicinity
for the past 50 years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Eastern Star and Social Order of
the Beauceant and Past President’s club of SOOB.
Survivors include two sons, Bill of Sacramento, Calif., and Robert E. of the home; two daughters, Mrs. George (Ada
Lee) Mattison, Colton, Calif., and Mrs. Robert (Fredrica) Leach, Albuquerque, N.M.; four brothers, Robert of Reseda,
Calif., Clarence of Owaso, Okla., Arthur of Winfield and Clyde of Wichita; one sister, Mrs. Ada Bricker of Wichita;
ten grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Ellis E. Rounds, died Sept. 3, at 6:30 p.m. at
El Dorado.
He was born in Winfield the son of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Rounds. He attended the Winfield schools. His first wife,
Iva E., preceded him in death February, 1961. He remarried in February 1962. He had been employed for 40 years
with the Winfield Post Office and prior to his retirement in 1960 he served as superintendent of mail. He had also
served as assistant postmaster. He moved to El Dorado in 1962. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, El
Dorado, Winfield Masonic Lodge, El Dorado Lions Club, National Association of Postal Supervisors and the El Dorado
Knife and Fork Club.
Survivors include his widow, Hazel M., two daughters, Mrs. Cecil T. Gray, Wichita; Mrs. John Potter, Bartlesville,
Okla.; one step-daughter, Mrs. Eugene Percell, Overland Park; one brother, Howard, Escondido, Calif., Seven grandchildren
and one great grandchild.

John C. Jordan, 48, died yesterday at 10:35 p.m.
at the Veteran’s Hospital in Wichita.
He was born March 10, 1920, in Georgia. During World War II he served in the Army. He had lived in Winfield the
past 25 years. He was married to Lelia Darnell June 16, 1950, at Newkirk, Okla. Before his illness he had been
employed as a truck driver. He was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include his widow, of the home; three step-daughters, Mrs. Charles Douglass, Wichita; Mrs. Bob Bonnell
and Mrs. Lowell Shrubshall, Winfield; four step-sons, Harold and Eldon Darnell, Winfield; Sam Darnell, Wichita,
and Charles Darnell, Harper.

DEXTER, Kan.---Services for Mrs. Eva Clark, 80, of Dexter, who died Sunday in Winfield, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Dexter Christian Church.
She was a native of Illinois. She is survived by
three daughters and a son, including Mrs. Lois Lemaster of Winfield and Mrs. Oliver Stone of Arkansas City, and
two sisters, Mrs. Iva Harney of Mulvane, Kan., and Miss Ora May Clark of Winfield. Burial will be in Dexter Cemetery
under direction of Miles Mortuary of Burden.

Samuel Frederic Davis Sr., 1522 W. Kansas Ave.,
more recently of the Ark Valley Manor, died at Memorial Hospital at 5:30 p.m. Saturday. He had been a resident
here for 60 years, coming from Protection, Kansas.
He was born June 1, 1876, in Sullivan County, Mo., to Cyrus W. Davis and Narcissus Francis Roach Davis, and grew
up in Missouri.
Davis was in one of six covered wagons that traveled to Roger Mills County to Oklahoma in 1903, where the family
settled on a farm between Rose and Crawford.
In 1910, they crossed the flooding Canadian River and went to Protection where he worked on a ranch. He came to
Arkansas City in about 1914 and went to work for the Ark City Milling Co., as a teamster.
He married Lulie Esta Brown on Nov. 16, 1902 at Split Log, Mo. She died on Nov. 20, 1956.
Survivors include two sons, Samuel Frederic Davis Jr., 426 N. Seventh St., and William Everet Davis, 1013 N. Ninth
St.; two daughters Mrs. Homer (Marie) Krager, 1502 W. Kansas Ave.; and Mrs. W.R. (Celesta) Flanigan, Sea Side,
Calif., 11 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and nine great great grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. Della
La Fon, Denver, Colo.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, two children, Clarence Walter Davis and Infant Mabel Melvina
Davis, two grandchildren, one great grandchild, and one great great grandchild, and four brothers, Norman Davis,
John Davis, Will Davis, Wilmer Davis, and two sisters, Mrs. Myrtle Jones, and Mrs. Maggie Hollis.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m.Tuesday in the Rindt Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Joe McElhaney officiating.
The body will lie in state at the Chapel until 1:15 p.m. Tuesday, with the casket to remain closed at the services.

Lulie Esta Davis Services Saturday
Mrs. Lulie Esta Davis, wife of Samuel Frederick Davis, 1422 W. Kansas Ave. died at 3:30 a.m. Tuesday in Memorial
Hospital after a serious Illness of three weeks. She was born in Ripley County, Ind., Mar. 7, 1884, the daughter
of Albert and Sarah Waters Brown. She married Samuel F. Davis Nov. 16, 1902 at Split Log, Mo., and the couple came
to this city 40 years ago from Roger Mills County, Okla.
She is survived by her husband of the home; two sons, Sam Davis Jr., 426 N. Seventh St., and Bill Davis, 1013 N.
Ninth St., two daughters, Mrs. Marie (Homer) Crager, 1402 W. Kansas Ave., and Mrs. Celesta (W.R.) Flanigan, Pacific
Grove, Calif.; a sister, Mrs. Myrtle Black, and a brother, Emerson Brown, both of Joplin, Mo.; nine grandchildren,
12 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mabel, a son, Clarence, a grandson, Forrest Flanigan
and a sister.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Jess Rindt chapel with the Rev. Clifford L. Barnes officiating. Burial

Arkansas City – Eli Vernon Smith, 72, of Arkansas
City, died July 2, 2000, at Medicalodge North Post Acute and Rehabilitation Center in Arkansas City.
Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Hawks Funeral Home. The Rev. James Watson Jr., will officiate. Burial will
be in Riverview Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday.
Smith was born on March 30, 1928, in Coyle, Okla., to Willie May (Benson) and Charles George Smith. He graduated
from Oklahoma City High School.
During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy.
His wife, Anna Marie Lolar Smith, died Jan. 30, 1996, after 30 years of marriage. They had lived in Las Vegas before
moving to Winfield in the early 1960’s and to Arkansas City in 1969.
He had worked for Eby Construction and Coon Construction and was a member of the laborers union for several years.
Smith was a life member of Shelton-Beaty American Legion Post 18.
Survivors include his brother, James Smith, Oxford; and a sister, Mary Ivey, Oklahoma City. (Winfield Daily Courier,

Mrs. Ate Dead
Mrs. Ivy May Ate, of 1025 North First Street, passed away at that place late yesterday afternoon. The cause of
death is given as a complication of diseases. Mrs. Ate had been married only about four months. She was aged
24 years and two days at the time of her death. The deceased was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F.H. Kindred of this
city.
Funeral services were held this afternoon at the Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Zimmerman. Interment took place
