THELMA R. MORGAN REPLACED UDALL'S MISSING LIBRARY
When Thelma R. Morgan went back home to Udall in 1970, she
thought there was one necessity missing from the town: a public library.
So she went to work, formed a committee and gathered a collection of books together in a room at City Hall. From
that one room a city tax-supported library evolved with larger quarters and many more books.
Mrs. Morgan, 86, the retired teacher and librarian who spurred the rebirth of the Udall Public Library, died Monday.
She was buried Friday in Udall Cemetery.
She was born in Atwood on Oct. 5, 1900, to Sam and Jessie Morgan. The family moved to the Udall area in 1910 and
she graduated from Udall High School in 1920.
That high school education meant a lot to her.
''She wanted to go to high school so badly that she would walk three miles along the railroad tracks from her house
to the high school in Udall," said her daughter, Gaila Walker of Udall.
She also had the urge to educate others. After receiving teacher training at Emporia State College, she taught
at a Udall elementary school until her 1924 marriage to Cecil Morgan in Udall. She then quit teaching.
But she came back, in 1944, first teaching in Udall for 10 years, and then in Haysville, Wichita, Milford and Junction
City before retiring in 1970. From 1944 to 1952, she enrolled in summer courses to earn an education degree from
Southwestern College in Winfield.
In her last years in the Junction City school system, Mrs. Morgan was a grade school librarian. Yet, on her return
to Udall after retirement, she found there was no library. A public library had existed until 1965 but it closed
for lack of a permanent site. Its books were stored away.
Mrs. Morgan went to work, collecting more books, organizing residents. And in one year, 1971, a new, if small,
Udall public library opened. "They've now built it up to a pretty good library . . . She thought education
was important. She loved the library. She loved books, period," said her daughter.
In addition to her daughter Gaila, Mrs. Morgan is survived by daughters Jessie Hatfield of Kent, Wash., and Beth
Evans of Udall; 13 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. Her husband died in 1970.
A funeral service was Friday at the United Methodist Church in Udall.
Memorials may be made to the Udall Public Library and the Alzheimer's Research Foundation.
