NEAL KRAUS DID MORE THAN CHEER FOR UDALL
Neal L. Kraus was known as one of Udall High School's
biggest sports boosters. Football, basketball, you name it, Mr. Kraus "came to just about every activity we
had here at the school," said principal John Hart.
This afternoon, Udall schools will close to allow faculty, staff and students to attend Mr. Kraus' funeral service
at 2 p.m. at the town's Congregational Church. Mr. Kraus died Friday night in Derby.
Mr. Kraus, 56, lived in Udall for more than 30 years with his wife, Patricia, the high school's secretary.
''I'd never seen him when he wasn't smiling," said Hart.
Family members and friends said Mr. Kraus loved to tease people he knew well.
''He was always giving me crap," Udall High basketball coach Dennis Grahem said with affection.
However, Mr. Kraus' love of hometown sports wasn't just about jokes and cheers. When it came to raising money for
sport equipment or other needs, "he was right there to help out" with a donation of money or time, Hart
said. He even worked the gate at high school football games, Grahem noted.
Mr. Kraus' nephew Bryan Classen, a standout Udall basketball player, chose his jersey number in honor of his uncle.
He wears "33," the number Mr. Kraus had worn as a high school player in Eskridge.
''He was real proud of that," said Mr. Kraus' daughter Sheryl Steger of Derby.
Such family ties were important to Mr. Kraus, said Steger.
From the stories he told about working as a boy to help support his mother and two brothers after his father died,
to the annual family vacations in the Ozarks, "everything he did involved family," Steger said.
But it "really didn't stop with family," said his brother, Paul Kraus of Topeka. "He supported the
team, and he was a hard worker."
Neal Kraus worked for years in the oil field industry, and was the owner and operator of a pumping service.
Mr. Kraus' other survivors include his daughter Malynda Mayes of Derby, his brother Gerald of Derby and four grandsons.
Memorials have been established with the Udall High School Athletic Department and the American Heart Association.
Mr. Kraus collapsed Friday from a massive heart attack while taking an after-dinner walk near Mayes' house in north
Derby.
