PITTSBURG, CRAWFORD COUNTY.

A town of about 5,000 inhabitants; located in the southern part of the county, in the midst of an extensive coal-mining district. The cheapness of fuel has attracted considerable manufacturing, and there are twenty-eight smelting furnaces running day and night giving employment to over 500 men and producing 6,500 pounds of zinc metal daily. Over $18,000 are paid monthly in wages in the industry alone. Besides this there are several smaller factories running, all adding their quota to the general output. The city is lighted by gas, has a water and fire department, schools, churches of every denomination, three newspapers, The Democrat (daily and weekly) and the Smelter and Headlight, both weeklies. The town is the junction of the Girard branch S. K. division of the A., T. & S. F. with the M. P., K. C., Ft S. & G. and St. L. & S. F. R. R., and is thus amply supplied with transportation facilities.
