GRAY, LEOTA BOWEN
Mulberry - Leota Bowen Gray, 85, of Mulberry, died
at 12:20 p.m. Saturday, April 5, 1986, at Mount Carmel Medical Center in Pittsburg. Mrs. Gray was born Feb. 21,
1901, in Reno County to James and Lena Bowen. She was a retired school teacher. She had taught school in Milberry,
Frontenac and Hugoton. Mrs. Gray was a member of the Eastern Star at Mulberry. She married Skip Gray in Pasadena,
Calif. He died before her. Survivors include on brother, Claude Bowen of Woodland, Calif. A brother and a sister
died before her. Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Barry-Bedene Funeral Home in Mulberry, with the Rev. Priscilla
Davis officiating. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Brazilton. Friends may call 1 to 5 p.m. today at

BOWEN, FLOSSIE MAIE
Miss Flossie Maie Bowen, 67, a former Mulberry
resident, died Thursday, June 17, at the Golden Age Lodge No. 1, Pittsburg. Miss Bowen was born Nov. 8, 1903, in
Frontennec and moved to Mulberry with her parents as a child. She lived at the Golden Age Lodge for the past 15
years. She graduated from the business department of K.S.C. in 1923. Until 1930 she was the bookkeeper for Dickson-Goodman
Lumber Company, Mulberry. Following that she was a bookkeeper at Comptons Lumber, Iantha, Mo., until health forced
her retirement. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Brazilton, Kans., and Rebakah Lodge No. 396, Mulberry.
Survivors include on sister, Mrs. Leota Bowen Gray, Mulberry; two brothers, Claude Bowen and Leo Bowen, both of
Mulberry. Funeral services were given by the Rebakah Lodge Sunday evening at the Berkley Chaple. Services June
21 at the chapel with the Rev. Frank Barblen of Fort Scott officiating. Burial was in the Zion Lutheran Church

BOWEN, LEO RUSSELL
Mulberry - Leo Russell Bowen, 72, Mulberry, died
Sunday, Dec. 13, 1981 at Mt. Carmel Medical Center. Mr. Bowen was born Jan. 17, 1909, at Lookout, Okla., to James
and Lena Embusch Bowen. He lived in Kansas most of his life. For the past six months he had made his home with
a sister, Leota Gray, Mulberry. Mr. Bowen served in the U. S. Coast Guard on the USS Hailey. He mined in the gold
mines in California and Utah, and was a garage mechanic in Wichita and Mt. Hope. He also farmed southwest of Mulberry.
Survivors include one son, Charles Bowen, Mt. Hope; a sister, Leota Bowen Gray, Mulberry, and a brother Claude
Bowen, Woodland, Calif. Services will be at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday at Berry Chapel, Mulberry, with Rev. Danny Koch

Funeral services for Maurice Elwood Bowen, 72,
West Plains, will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday in the Carter Chapel, West Plains, with the Rev. Dale Hopkins officiating.
Mr. Bowen died at 2:15 a.m. Tuesday at his home. He was born Oct. 28, 1909, in Pittsburg, Kan., the son of the
late William Guy and Dora Etta Brumer Bowen. He was married Dec. 30, 1947, at Mtn. View to Ollie Brotherton Zeek.
Mr. Bowen was a member of the Christian Scientist faith. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army, having served during
World War II. Survivors include his wife, Ollie Bowen of the home; three daughters, Brenda Bowen, Ypsilanti, Mich.;
Oneta Causby, Waterford, Mich.; Martha Ann Rowe, Flint, Mich.; one son, Ronny Zeek, Burton, Mich.; one brother,
Robert Bowen, Cassville; two sisters, Maie Mellick, Lees Summit; Ruth McMillian, Gaines, Mich.; eight grandsons
and several nieces and nephews. One brother, William Guy Bowen, precedes him in death. Burial will be Howell Memorial

BOWEN, CLAUDE D.
Woodland, Calif. - Claude D. Bowen, 82, died Tuesday,
Jan. 2, 1990, at the Woodland Memorial Hospital in Woodland, Calif. A native of Kansas, he was born on Nov. 14,
1907, He worked as a welder for the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant in Parsons. Mr. Bowen was a member of the Kansas
Grand Lodge No. 261 AF & AM in Mullberry and the Scottish Rite Temple of Fort Scott. Survivors include his
wife, Ruby of Woodland, Calif.; one daughter, Dixie Pouncey of Woodland; one son, Gary Bowen of Woodland; five
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Graveside services conducted by the Masons were held Friday, Jan. 5,

BOWEN, JAMES
Death of an Old Soldier and Kansas Pioneer
Sunday evening at 10 o'clock James Bowen died at
his home just east of Pittsburg and was laid away in Mt. Olive cemetery Tuesday afternoon. He leaves a wife and
four children, four of whom are residents of Pittsburg. He was born in Edgar county, Illinois, in 1843, served
3 years in the civil war and was honorably discharged. August 20, 1864, just 47 years later to a day , came his
discharge from life's warfare and those 47 years were full of active , honorable service. Mr. Bowen's specialty
was horticulture and his 21 years of residence in Crawford county enabled him to do much for the promotion of high-class
fruits in this vicinity. A Christian gentleman, an upright citizen and a kind and loving husband and father has

Mulberry, April 24 - Funeral rites for James Ernest
(Dick) Bowen, 80, former resident of Pittsburg, who died Saturday at his home in Mulberry, were held this afternoon
at the Montanye chapel in Mullberry. A second service was also held this afternoon at the Brazilton Lutheran church.

FINDLEY, ANNA VALLIE
Anna Vallie Findley, 94, Pittsburg, formerly of
Fort Scott, died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 1991 at Mount Carmel Medical Center, Pittsburg. She had been in ill health
for 1 1/2 months, and was a resident of Sunset Manor Nursing Home, Frontenac, before entering the hospital. She
was born Sept. 5, 1897 in Mountain Grove, Mo. to George R. and Anna E. Keffer Baucom. She had been a homemaker
for most of her life, and was a member of the Baptist Church. Survivors include three grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren
and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mildred Sailsbury, and five sisters.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Oakwood Cemetery, Parsons, with Rev. George Powers, of the
South Broadway Baptist Church, Pittsburg, officiating. The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Friday at
the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home, Pittsburg. A memorial has been established to the Department of Nursing at Pittsburg

SIMS, RICHARD DEAN
Richard Dean Sims, 53, Arma, KS, died Monday, November
29, 2010, at his home, following a sudden illness. He was born January 7, 1957, in Neosho, MO, to Terrel and Helen
(Largen) Sims.
Richard was a lifelong area resident and an automobile
mechanic. He and Jackie Hayes were married June 24, 2002, in Miami, Oklahoma; Jackie survives.
Additional survivors include, his children, Richard
Dean Sims, II, Vinita, OK, Rebcka Sissom, Hulbert, OK, James W. Morrison, Arma, KS, and Sara Barwick, Cassville,

PITTSBURG — Mary M. Bartley, 66 of Pittsburg, KS
died at 6:41pm, Sunday, January 10, 2010 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, MO.
Mary was born April 14, 1943 in Pittsburg, KS to Lonnie N. and Anna L. “Lou” (Oehme) Gustin. She attended area
schools, graduating from St. Mary’s High School with the class of 1961.
On October 10, 1972 in Pittsburg, KS, she married Ralph E. Bartley, Jr. He survives of the home.
Mary was the co-owner/co-operator of the Dairy Queen Stores in Pittsburg. She later worked at the Wolf’s Den Tanning
Salon.
Mary was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Frontenac. She attended Perpetual Adoration regularly
at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She attended Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. Mary was an avid bowler,
belonging to the Pittsburg Ladies League at the Holiday Lanes. Mary loved people and she never met a stranger.
Additional survivors include her daughters Dawn Sitz and husband Jeff of Carbondale, KS and Amy Bartley and friends
Lisa Cobb and Jill Mundorf all of Pittsburg; sons Ryan Bartley of Sarasota, FL and Ralph E. Bartley III and wife
Kim of Bella Vista, AR; brother Lonnie Gustin and his wife Sharon of Girard, KS and her loving pet cat Louie; along
with 8 grandchildren.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents and grandson Joshua Sitz.

Pittsburg with Fr. Thomas Stroot as celebrant. Burial will follow in Garden of Memories Cemetery. The family will

BARTLEY, RALPH E.
PITTSBURG — Ralph E. Bartley, Jr., 74, of Pittsburg,
Kan., died at 5:50am, Wednesday, May 12, 2010 at Via Christi Village-Cornerstone of Pittsburg.
Ralph was born Sept. 19, 1935, in Atchison, Kan., to Ralph E. and Julia (Miller) Bartley. He attended and graduated
from Hayden High School with the class of 1953. He later attended Washburn University for one year.
On October 14, 1972 in Pittsburg, Kan., he married Mary M. Gustin. She preceded him in death on Jan. 10, 2010.
Ralph worked for Frito Construction for 10 years as a Field Engineer and later Vice President. He worked for Beachner
Construction for 15 years as an Estimator and Field Engineer. He later was the co-owner/co-operator of the Dairy
Queen Stores in Pittsburg, KS.
Ralph was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Frontenac, Kan. He was also past Kansas President of
Dairy Queen Operators Association. He was the DMA chairperson for 10-plus years. He later attended Our Lady of
Lourdes Catholic Church in Pittsburg.
Survivors include daughters Dawn Sitz and husband Jeff of Carbondale, Kan., and Amy Bartley of Pittsburg; sons
Ryan Bartley of Sarasota, Fla., and Ralph E. Bartley III and wife Kim of Bella Vista, Ark.; brothers Charles Bartley
of Topeka, Kan., and William Bartley and wife Faye of Normal, Ill; sisters Barbara Schaffer and husband Bob and
Francis Roberts and husband Richard, all of Topeka, Kan.; along with eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Joshua Sitz.

Jerry was born Dec. 8, 1992, in Iola, the son of Jerry Allen Bland Sr. and Natalie Elaine Fuller.
Survivors include his parents, Jerry Sr. and Zolene Bland, of Iola, and Natalie Fuller-Rose of Girard; four sisters,
Kurstie Bland Harris and her husband, Kevin of Weir, and Jerrica, Kysha and Jacinda Bland all of Emporia, Kan.;
a stepbrother, Dawson King of Iola; grandparents, Orva Sr. and Virginia Bland of Iola, Frank and Jan Fuller of
Iola, and Sheila and Earl Forman of Denver; a great-grandmother, Dorothy Reed of Gas, Kan.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Levi Jeria Bland; two uncles Orva M. “Sonny” Bland Jr., and Jimmy Dale Bland;

CAPUT, JOHN J.
ARMA — John J. Caput, 85, died February 11, in
Arma, KS.
Mr. Caput was born in Franklin, KS to Frank and
Janie Caput. At age 3 the family moved to Arma. He attended Arma schools and in 1942 graduated from C.C.H.S. in
Arma. At 18 John was called to serve his country. He served as a Medic in the European Theatre. He returned to
Arma in 1945. In 1947 he moved to Kansas City, MO, where he was employed by General Motors (Fairfax), but was forced
to retire after 31 years because of two heart attacks.
John married Betty Ruth Brooks in 1951 and they
celebrated 53 years together. John and Betty had two children and lived in K.C. until 2004 when they returned to
Arma. He is survived by a son Jay Anthony Caput, granddaughter , Andrea Brandt, great grandsons Caleb Blanton and
Braden Dabelstein, and a grandson Travis Lancaster. He is also survived by his sister Marie L. Chiappetti, nephews
and nieces, James J. Caput, David Chiappetti and Janet Hogard, all of Frontenac, KS and Dennis Chiappetti of Pittsburg,
KS.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife
Betty Ruth, daughter Beth Ann Lancaster, grandson Anthony J. Brandt and his brother James L. Caput.
His request for cremation was honored by his family.

COWAN, STEPHEN J.
ARMA — Stephen J. Cowan, 61, of Arma, died 3:15
p.m. Saturday, January 30, 2010, at Mt. Carmel Regional Medical Center in Pittsburg following a short battle with
cancer. He was born June 1. 1948 in Arma at the home of his parents, Mildred (Grizzle) Cowan and delivered by his
father John E. (Jack) Cowan.
Steve attended Arma Elementary and Jr. High and it was at Arma High School where he began dating his wife Sharon
(Kovacic) Cowan who survives at their home. He joined the United States Air Force in 1966 and was stationed at
McChord Air Force Base in Tacoma, Washington as a Sergeant. In 1970 he was discharged with Honors and returned
back to Arma to marry Sharon on June 27, 1970 at the Arma United Methodist Church where Steve was a member.
He worked construction for many years and later owned his own business, Cowan Construction. He enjoyed helping
people in his community and there was no job he couldn’t do. At this time he also was a volunteer Fireman for the
Arma Fire Department and District #2 Fire Department. Steve had a great love and appreciation for the outdoors
and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He especially loved to fish at Stockton Lake and Ft. Scott Lake and opened
a sporting good store, Old Fort Gun and Tackle, in Ft. Scott, Kansas in 1988. In 1993 he began working as a Postal
Clerk at the Fort Scott Post Office and did so until his sudden illness. He was a member of the American Postal
Union District #6 and the Kansas Postal Workers Union AFLCIO.
Besides hunting and fishing, Steve enjoyed working on cars and fixing up houses with his sons Cody and Gage. He
was always up for going to the movies, and like to watch the History and SyFy channel. Steve was best known in
Arma for his Halloween decorations that he put up every year. Much time and effort went into the planning and constructing
of the Cowan Halloween House just to make the holiday enjoyable not only for trick-or-treaters but for his family.
He loved fireworks on the 4th of July, giving presents for Christmas and lighting sparklers on New Year’s Eve.
His contagious excitement will be greatly missed by family and everyone that knew him.
Survivors include: wife Sharon of Arma; son Cody Cowan of Pittsburg; son Gage Cowan of Arma; daughter Hilary “Doc”
Cowan Unruh, and son-in-law Ted Unruh of Pittsburg. Two sisters, Jeanie Skidmore of Belton, Missouri and Cindy
Cowan of Farmington, New Mexico. Step Father Clarence Ryder of Franklin; two step sisters, Diane Reiken of Arma
and Marrene Pacelli of Anaheim, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father, grandparents and niece Gina Menelli.

Don Foster officiating and burial services immediately following at the Garden of Memories in Pittsburg, KS. The

MULBERRY — The body of Richard A. Davis, 37, of
Mulberry, KS, formerly of Carol Stream, IL, was found Sunday, January 17, 2010.
He was born May 20, 1972, in Chicago, IL, to Beverly (Kleppetsch) Davis.
On April 22, 1995, he was united in marriage to Michelle Yeager, formerly of West Chicago, IL, in Creston, IL.
Mr. Davis served in the United States Navy.
He had previously worked as a plumber for Cunningham Plumbing in Tulsa, OK.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Aaron R. Davis and Richard “Ricky” A. Davis, Jr., both of
the home, his father, Robert Gilszmer of Rochelle, IL, mother, Beverly Davis of New Carlisle, IN, three brothers,
John Davis, Jeremy Gilszmer, and Alan Gilszmer, two sisters, Kim Groleau and Jamie Gilszmer, grandmother, Geraldine
Kleppetsch of Gilman, WI, best friend, Brandon Ridley, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends
around the world.

She was born Aug. 5, 1926 in Barton County, MO
the daughter of George and Mabel (Hughes) Crank.
Wilma married Charles Dietz on October 27, 1942
in Girard, KS; he preceded her in death on March 8, 1996.
She lived in the Owsley community, was a homemaker
and of the Christian faith.
Wilma is survived by two daughters-Mary (Ken) Rogers
of Nashville, MO, Gin (Gary) Falcetto of Chicopee, 4 sons Darrell (Saundra) Dietz of Asbury, MO, Jerry (Judy) Dietz
of Weir, Tom (Audrey) Dietz of Asbury, MO, Curt (Sharon) Dietz of Weir; three sisters Thelma Frakes of Girard,
Vivian Leach of Greeley, CO and Deloris Avery of Hutchinson; 13 grandchildren and 22 Great-grandchildren. She was
preceded in death by her parents, husband, a daughter Janice Trujillo, four brothers and three sisters.

FRANKLIN — The inurnment and final placement of
Sandy Jo (Slaughter) (Badart) Hamblin will be at Mt. Olive Cemetery, East Quincy St., Pittsburg, Ks., at the gravesite
on Wednesday, March 17, 2010 at 11 a.m. Following the service lunch for all family and close friends will be served
at the Franklin Community Center & Heritage Museum. At 2 p.m. there will be a flag pole dedication in memory
of Sandy in the Franklin Community Park, 5th and Broadway, Franklin, Ks.
Sandra Jo “Sandy” Hamblin, age 62, Franklin, Kansas,
passed away on Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at 10:42 p.m. in Freeman West Hospital, Joplin, as a result of an accident
at her home earlier in the day.
Sandy was born March 17, 1947 in Pittsburg, Kansas,
daughter of the late Oscar Badart and Hazel Slaughter Badart. Sandy attended Pittsburg Schools, and was an active
member of Lighthouse Tabernacle Church in Pittsburg. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who devoted
her life to her family.
In addition to her parents, Sandy was preceded
in death by her twin brothers, Donald and Ronald Badart and two sisters, Beverly Kay Jaynes and Imogene Davidson.
Survivors include her husband of 47 years, Raymond
Lee Hamblin; two sons, Michael Hamblin and wife Sheila of Girard, Kansas and Jason Lee Hamblin of Eugene, Oregon;
daughter, Laurie Corn of Baxter Springs, Kansas; brothers, Johnny Badart of Pittsburg and Jimmy Badart of Eldorado,
Kansas; sister, Marilyn Horn of Las Vegas, Nevada; grandchildren, Rylee Madison Hamblin, Michael Kross Hamblin,
Patrick Andrew Corn and Joseph Stephen Corn; a brother-in-law, Orville Davidson of Cherokee, Kansas and a sister-in-law,
Freda Badart of Pittsburg; numerous nieces and nephews.
Pastor Darryl Gaddy will officiate the service.

HOUGH, GLENN L.
PITTSBURG — Dr. Glenn L. Hough, 75, of Pittsburg,
KS, died Monday, March 8, 2010 at the emergency room at Mt. Carmel Regional Medical Center, Pittsburg, KS, after
a sudden illness.
Dr. Hough was born July 11, 1934 in Kirby, TX to
Leslie and Mary Francis “Suzie” (Deidiaker) Hough. He lived briefly in Poteau, OK and moved to Pittsburg, KS where
he graduated from PHS in 1951.
He attended Pittsburg State University, graduating
in 1954. He graduated from the University of Missouri Kansas City dental school in 1958 and orthodontic specialty
in 1960.
He began his orthodontic practice in Pittsburg,
KS, in 1960 and had satellite offices in Chanute, KS, Parsons, KS, Fort Scott, KS, and Nevada, MO. He retired in
2003.
Dr. Hough was a sportsman, actively hunting and
fishing. He was an avid reader. He supported athletic programs in the community and at Pittsburg State University
and enjoyed following the progress of local athletes.
Dr. Hough was a member of the Masonic Lodge #187,
Mirza Shrine, Royal Order of Jesters Court #95, Southwest Society of Orthodontics, American Dental Association
and American Association of Orthodontics. He served as a past president of: Southeast Kansas Dental Society, University
of Missouri Kansas City Dental Alumni Society, and Pittsburg Dental Study Club.
He was also a member of the First United Methodist
Church and the Crestwood Country Club.
He is survived by his wife, Dee Hough of the home;
three sons, Gary Hough and wife, Ann of Omaha, NE; Greg Hough and wife, Shonee of Topeka, KS, and Gordon Hough
of Advance, N.C.; grandchildren Van, Jace and Gage of Omaha, NE, Graham and Grace of Topeka, KS, and Covey and
Nijmegen of Advance, N.C.; a brother, Fred Hough and wife, Sharon of N. Monroe, LA; step-children, Cathy McFarland
and husband, Shawn of Nowata, OK; Samuel Highfield and wife, Vicki of Pittsburg, KS, Laura Highfield of Nowata,
OK; step-grandchildren, Michael of Nowata, OK, Alex, Jessica and Cassie; Dustin, Samantha, and Brandon Highfield
of Pittsburg, and ten great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a
brother, Robert Hough.
Services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday (March 12) at
the First United Methodist Church with Reverend Kathleen Owsley officiating. The family will receive friends in
the church parlor following the service. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Thursday at the Mortuary. The family suggests
memorials to the S.E.K Humane Society and/or the Pittsburg State University Athletic Scholarship Fund. These may

MAPES, MARY LOU (PRYOR)
ARMA — Mary Lou Mapes, 74 of Arma, KS died at 1:00
am Monday, February 15, 2010 at the Arma Care Center. She had been in failing health for a year.
She was born January 25, 1936 in Pittsburg, the
daughter of Merle Pryor, Sr. and Vida (Prince) Pryor. She attended area schools.
On July 11, 1955 she was united in Marriage to
Harold Mapes in Lamar, MO; he preceded her in death on June 23, 2005.
Mary Lou worked for the U.S. Postal Service as
a Clerk for many years; she also worked for JC Penney’s as an inventory specialist.
She was of the Christian faith.
Survivors include a daughter Debbie Barone of Arma,
one sister Jeanette Cline of Arma, three brothers Ted and Merle Pryor both of Mulberry, KS and Jim Pryor of Mindenmines,
MO. She was also survived by two grandchildren who were her pride and joy, granddaughter Kayla Spencer and her
husband James of Ottawa, KS, a grandson Corey Barone of Arma.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband
and infant sister Jeanine Pryor.

MULBERRY — Gary R. Mays, 66, of Mulberry, died
Thursday, April 1, 2010 at his home.
Mr. Mays was born December 5, 1943 at Gross, Kansas, the son of Clea Richard and Freda Belle Ricketts Mays. Gary
was raised in Mulberry and attended Mulberry schools. He had been a resident of Mulberry all his life. Survivors
include several cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents.

MENGHINI, NORMAN
MONTROSE, Colo. — Norman Menghini, 73, of Montrose,
Colorado, formerly of Arma died at 11:07 a.m. Tuesday, February 9, 2010 at the Valley Manor Nursing Home at Montrose,
Colorado.
Mr. Menghini was born September 23, 1936 at Arma,
Kansas the son of Alex and Adelina Prevedel Menghini. Norman was a retired brick mason who lived in Arma most of
his life. He attended Arma Schools and graduated from Arma High School. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic
Church in Arma and a member of the Knights of Columbus. Survivors include a sister-in-law, Mary Lou (Mahanes) Menghini
of Simpsonville, South Carolina, two nephews, seven nieces and seventeen great nieces and nephews. Norman was preceded
in death by his parents, a brother, Elmer Menghini, and a sister, Rena Wilbert.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday,
February 15, 2010 at St. Joseph Catholic Church at Arma with Father Lawrence Carney as celebrant. Burial will be

MITCHELL, LORENE
ELIZABETH (TARPY)
GIRARD — Lorene Elizabeth Mitchell, 76, of Girard,
Kansas passed away at 5:25 A.M., Friday, February 26, 2010 at the Saint John’s Regional Medical Center in Joplin,
Missouri.
Lorene was born October 8, 1933 in Lawrence Kansas
a daughter of Arthur and Gladys (Groninger) Tarpy. Lorene attended grade school in Farlington, Kansas. She later
attended Girard schools through the eleventh grade, graduating from the Erie High School. Lorene furthered her
education first at the Fort Scott Junior College, receiving her associate’s degree. She then attended Kansas State
Teachers College, now Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas graduating in 1973. She received her master’s
from Pittsburg State in 1988. Lorene taught in the Girard school system for 28 years, retiring in 1996.
Lorene was a member of the Farlington United Methodist
Church and the Sunflower Quilt club. She served as a member of the Pink Lady Auxiliary for the Girard Medical Center
in Girard, Kansas, serving as president of the auxiliary in 2009. After retirement Lorene was active in the school
system; serving as mentor in the grade school reading program.
Lorene is survived by a daughter, Judy Nelson (Randy)
of Farlington: one son J.T. Mitchell of Pittsburg, Kansas, one brother, Sonny Tarpy (Shirley) of Lawrence, Kansas,
two sisters, Betty Stellwagen (Bud) of Perry Kansas, Carol Creek (Mike) of Lawrence, Kansas, four Grandchildren
and nine Great-Grandchildren.
Lorene was preceded in death by her parents, two
daughters, Janice Carol and Nancy Jo and one sister, Mary Kreiger.
Services will be at 10:00 A.M., Tuesday March 2,
2010 at the Smith-Carson -Wall Funeral Home in Girard with Rev. Steve Cole officiating: Burial will be in the Garden

NOVAK, FRANK
LEAWOOD — Frank Novak, 88, of Leawood, Kansas,
passed away on March 29, 2010 at KC Hospice House. Memorial Mass will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 10th at
Christ the King Church, 8510 Wornall Rd., KCMO 64114. The family will receive friends prior to the mass from 10-11
a.m. at the Church. A private burial will be held at a later date at Garden of Memories Cemetery, Pittsburg, KS.
Frank was born February 5, 1922, in Edison, KS, to Katarina (Lesjack) and Vincent Novak, both of whom immigrated
here from Yugoslavia. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Vince and Tony Novak; sisters Katherine
(Billie) Dubec, Pauline (Pat) Winegar, Mary Kovacic and Elizabeth Novak; step-son Larry DoLance. He is survived
by his wife Josephine (Hocevar, DoLance) Novak; step-daughter Vicki Van Engen and her husband Arlan; grandchildren
Jenna, Jozy and Andra; two nieces and a nephew.
Frank proudly served four and one half years in the Army Air Corp. during World War II in the European Theater
of Operations, under General George Patton. His tour of duty took him to the beaches of Normandy, France, at the
Battle of the Bulge, Germany, England and Belgium.
Following his discharge from the Army after World War II he traveled to many states looking for work. His journey
took him to California, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Wyoming until he finally ended up in the Northwest. He eventually
worked and retired after 18 years from the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard where he worked on nuclear submarines in
the Nuclear Radiation Department as a civilian employee. Following retirement he and his wife enjoyed traveling
and especially going to 3-day Polka festivals across the country including Hawaii. Jo and Frank recently celebrated
33 years of marriage on March 18, 2010.

PITTSBURG — Jake A. Price 20, of Pittsburg, KS
died 7:45 a.m. Monday January 11, 2010 at KU Medical Center in Kansas City, KS following a long illness.
Jake was born January 10, 1990 in Pittsburg, KS
to Mark and Cindy (Reinier) Price. He lived in Pittsburg most of his young life except for eight years he resided
in Anchorage Alaska. He attended Bay Shore Elementary in Anchorage, AK; NE Elementary in Arma, KS; NE Junior High
and High School in Arma, KS; and 2 years at Pittsburg State University were he was majoring in Psychology and Diversity
Studies. He was a cook at the Mall Deli for 5 years.
He was a member of the Arma United Methodist Church
in Arma, KS.
He was a member of Mirza Shriners, Masonic Lodge
#187, Boys State as a student and counselor, Scholars Bowl in High School, Autism Speaks Association, 2010 Gubernatorial
Candidate, involved in speech and forensics, and took part in Crawford County Teen Court. He enjoyed collecting
coins, playing piano, saxophone, was known as a pool hustler, always need a book in his hand, was always close
to his family, friends and never met a stranger. He also joined the Army in May and was scheduled for deployment
in October, but due to his illness was medically discharged.
Survivors include his parents of Pittsburg, KS;
paternal grandparents John and Susan Price of Arma, KS; Tim and Nina Presley of Springfield, MO; maternal grandfather
Frank Reinier of Pittsburg, KS; Godparents Richard Steckel and Mary Marshall of Anchorage, AK; and many aunts,
uncles, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by maternal grandmother
Linda Reineir.

MULBERRY — Byrdie C. Ryan, 86 of Mulberry died
at 7:45 p.m. Wednesday March 3, 2010 at her home in Mulberry.
She was born October 29, 1923 in Booneville, AR
the daughter of Marvin and Francis (Bird) Castleberry. She lived for over 30 years in Wichita moving to Mulberry
in 1970.
Byrdie married Kenneth Ryan on January 28, 1943
in Russellville, AR; he preceded her in death in 1992.
She was a homemaker.
Survivors include 2 sons-Buddy Ryan and wife Micky
of Mulberry, Kim Ryan and wife Patty of Mulberry; 3 daughters-Mary Massions and husband Dennis of Nevada, MO, Millie
Darlene Ryan of Mulberry, Sheila Sprankle and husband Tom of Wichita, KS; 15 Grandchildren and 14 Great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and seven brothers and sisters.
According to her wishes Mrs. Ryan will be taken

ST. CLAIR, EVERETT
SCAMMON — Everett L. St. Clair, 92, of Scammon,
Kan., died at 12:45 a.m. Thursday April 29, 2010, at the Quaker Hill Manor Nursing Home in Lowell, Kan.
He was born April 21, 1918 in Mulberry, Kan., the son of Roy and Florence (Scott) St. Clair.
Everett was a lifetime resident of the Cherokee/Scammon areas.
He married Hazel Hindman on Oct. 4, 1939, in Lamar, Mo.; she preceded him in death on July 30, 2002.
Everett was a lineman working for Empire District Electric Company for 35 years, retiring in the early 1980s.
He was a member of the Presbyterian Faith; a past member of the Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and
gardening.
Survivors include a son Robert “Bob” St. Clair and his wife Shirley of Baxter Springs; three grandchildren, Robin
Graham and her husband Rod of Miami, OK, Kelly St. Clair-Barnes and her husband Paul of Farmington, Mo., Stacy
Skye and her husband Joseph of Baxter Springs; seven great-grandchildren, Zachary and Nicholas Graham, Jonah and
Delaney Barnes, and Morgan, Brendan and Emerson Skye.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and
a son, Everett G. “Jerry” St. Clair.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, May 1, 2010, at the Hosey Hill Cemetery in Weir, with Pastor Wes Davis
officiating. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until service time on Saturday at the Bath-Naylor Funeral
Home in Weir, and the procession to the cemetery will leave at 10:45 a.m.

FRANKLIN — Beverly Ann Turner, 66, of Franklin,
Kansas went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, February 16, 2010 at 10:25 a.m. at Medicalodge South Nursing Home in
Pittsburg, Kansas following a long illness.
Beverly was born May 24, 1943 in Croweburg, Kansas
the daughter of Bob and Kathryn Jackson Giles. Her parents later divorced. Beverly’s mother later married Leroy
Nelson Sr. and they raised Bev. Beverly was a registered nurse working 17 years at the Arma Nursing Home starting
as a nurses aide and later becoming the Director of Nursing. She also worked 17 years for Hughes Tool Company in
Houston, Texas. Beverly attended Arma Grade School and graduated from Pittsburg High School in 1960. She attended
Kansas State Teachers College, now PSU, and later attended Ft. Scott Community College becoming a registered nurse.
She married Clifford Starnes in 1964 and they had a daughter, Kimberly. They later divorced. She married Percy
Turner III on May 10, 1985 in Houston, Texas. Mr. Turner survives at the home. Beverly loved to play bingo, was
a member of the New Life Baptist Church at Franklin, and a member of the Eastern Star in Pittsburg and the Arma
Eagles Auxiliary. Survivors include her husband, Percy of the home, a daughter, Kimberly Kelley and her husband
Jerome of Houston, Texas, a step-son, Duane Turner and his wife Jennifer of Houston, Texas, step-father, the Rev.
Leroy Nelson Sr. and his wife Louise of Ft. Scott, four sisters, Judy Sharpe and her husband James of Idabel, Oklahoma,
Marva Nelson and her husband Thomas of Chicago, Illinois, and Edythe Boyd and Sarah Thorns of Las Vegas, Nevada,
five brothers, James (Sonny) Giles and his wife Carol of Croweburg, Leroy Nelson Jr. of Chicago, Illinois, Marion
Nelson of Chanute, William Nelson and his wife Janet of Pittsburg, and Stephen Giles of Las Vegas, Nevada; grandchildren
Mark and Trace E Clayton and four other grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. Best friends,
Alice McDaniel of Pittsburg and Joann Lasane of Houston, Texas. She was preceded in death by her mother, Kathryn
Nelson, a sister, Kathryn Lee Nelson, and a step-son, Kendrick Turner. Bev was dedicated to her husband, daughter,
grandchildren and family.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, February
20, 2010 at the Bedene Funeral Home at Arma with Pastor Randy Woods and the Rev. Leroy Nelson Sr. officiating.
James Giles will give the eulogy. Burial will be at the Highland Park Cemetery at Pittsburg. The family will receive
