William Stockton Dies Here Friday
William Elijah Stockton, 620 North A. St., died
at 5:50 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14, 1956 at the home of his son, Marion David Stockton, 713 North A St., after a critical
illness lasting five weeks.
He had been employed by the city of Arkansas City
for 23 years and by the Wallace Paving Company four years. He retired in 1944. He was a member of the Baptist Church.
He was born Nov. 25, 1870 in Bates County, Mo.,
the son of George Marion Stockton Sr. and Millicent "Milley" Frances (Henson) Stockton. He was married
to Sarah Ann Byers on Oct. 11, 1892 in Barry Co., Mo. She died Oct. 20, 1942. He came to Arkansas City in 1920
from Diamond, Newton County, Mo.
He was married to Mrs. Mary Mollie Rhodes on July
21, 1952 at Bentonville, Arkansas. His wife survives.
Other survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Lula (Charles)
Wilson, 609 S. Fifth St., and Mrs. Hattie (Earl) Ball, 1309 W. Chestnut Ave.; two sons, Marion Stockton, 713 North
A St., and Willis Robert Stockton, Neosho, Mo.; 17 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Five brothers, Mont Stockton, 612 North A. St.,
Benjamin Stockton, 609 South D St., Charles Stockton, Uncas, Okla., Willis Green Stockton, Exeter, Mo., and Rube
Stockton, Joplin, Mo. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, one daughter, two brothers, and two sisters.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church with the Rev. George Dick officiating. Burial will be

BALL, ORA "EARL"
Ora "Earl" Earl Ball, 1309 W. Chestnut
Ave., died at 8:43 p.m. Jan. 31, 1975 in Memorial Hospital. He was 79.
He was born June 7, 1895 at Granby, Mo., to Walter
Ball and Rhoda Ann (Rimmer) Ball. Aug. 19, 1920, he married Harriett "Hattie" Juanita Stockton at Neosho,
Mo., and they made their home in Granby, Mo., until moving to Arkansas City, Kan., in 1943.
Until his retirement in 1960 he worked for the
City of Arkansas City Santiation Department.
He was a World War I veteran. He enlisted in July
22, 1918, in the Army Infantry and was discharged from the service Jan. 31, 1919.
Survivors include his widow of the home; four sons,
Ivan William Ball, Rt. 4, Walter A. Ball, Rt. 2, Ora Lee Ball, Rt. 2 and Ervin Ray Ball of Osburne, Wash.; six
daughters, Mrs. Delmar (Lorene) Barclay, 408 S. Seventh St., Mrs. Bill (Irene) Richardson, 826 N. Seventh St.,
Mrs. Robert (Juanita) Gibson, Rt. 4, Mrs. Johnnie (Wanda) Swopes, Rt. 1, Mrs. Carl (Bertha) Olsen, of Glencoe,
Okla., and Mrs. Charles (Jessie) Sidner of Oburne, Wash.; a brother, Henry William Ball, Phoenix, Ariz.; three
sisters, Mrs. Mearl Brantley, Skiatook, Okla, Mrs. Mabel Mae McMahon, Granby, Mo., and Mrs. Evelene Glosson of
Joplin, Mo.; 28 grandchildren, and 18 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers,
Alvin and Harry Ball; and three sisters, Wilma Ball, Pearl Jane Crawford, and Allie Dean Jennings.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Feb. 4 in the Rindt Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Oreal Sanders officiating. Burial

WAYNE
PITTSBURG — Larry Wayne “Bubba” Sustarsic, 54 of
Arma, KS, passed away on January 15, 2011, at the Girard Medical Center, in Girard, KS; he had been in ill health
for the past two and a half years.
Larry was born in Pittsburg, Kansas on November 12, 1956, to Frank and Mae (McCool) Sustarsic.
He graduated from Northeast High School, upon graduation, Larry began working for Pitt Plastics in Pittsburg, KS.
He was employed with them for 32 years, retiring in 2008 due to ill health. He was an avid Jay Hawk, Chiefs and
Royals fan.
He married Janna Owen in June of 1986 and they later divorced. From that marriage, Larry’s greatest joy was born,
his daughter Amanda, She survives along with his mother Mae, his brothers Frankie Sustarsic and wife Phyllis of
Pittsburg, and Gary Sustarsic of Arma, along with his sister Joyce Sustarsic of Arma, many nieces, nephews and
a granddaughter Chloe to be born in May, also a special daughter Samantha Owen of Olathe, KS.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Funeral services will be 10 am, Tuesday, January 18, 2011 at the Friskel Funeral Home 230 E. McKay Frontenac, with
Rev. Jim Sukraw officiating. Burial will follow in the Garden of Memories Cemetery. Family will receive friends

PITTSBURG — Patsy Ruth Sumner, 84, passed away
7:55 A.M. Friday, January 14, 2011, at Via Christi Hospital, in Pittsburg, KS.
Pat Sumner went to “room with God” on Friday after an 18 month battle with cancer.
Pat was born in Pittsburg, the daughter of Art and Mary Bicknell Sumner. She attended St. Mary’s School and was
a life long member of Our Lady Of Lourdes Catholic Church in Pittsburg.
Pat was married to Mac French in 1945. They had two children. Pat was later married to Lee Sumner who preceded
her in heath. She was also preceded in death by her parents, 2 brothers, Art and Bob Bicknell and 1 sister Rosemary
Walker. Pat is survived by her loving children Sharon French Magee, Dan Magee, Mac French and Shawn Murphy; grandchildren
Teresa and Bob Lentz, Tim Magee, Tiffane Farmer, Courtney French, Todd Magee and Tom French. 11 Great-Grandchildren;
1 Brother Bill and wife Jeanetta Bicknell, sister-in-law Rosemary Bicknell and several nieces and nephews.

MULBERRY, Ks.-Frank Pike, 63, of rural Mulberry,
died at 8:20 a.m., Tuesday, April 19, 1988, at the Girard hospital.
He was born in Mulberry on Jan. 25, 1925, the son
of Andrew Pike/Pikelj and Mary (Eichhorn) Pike/Pikelj.
He was a member of the American Legion Post No.
182 in Arma and the S.N.P.J. Lodge No. 11.
Mr. Pike was a retired farmer. He was a veteran
of World War II.
Survivors include his mother, Mary Pike/Pikelj
of the home; two brothers, Vincent Pike of Route 1, Pittsburg and Albert Pike of Girard, four nieces and one nephew;
one uncle and two aunts.
His father preceded him in death in Oct. 1967.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Bedene
Chapel in Arma. Burial will be in Pittsburg Garden of Memories. Vistation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the
Bedene Funeral Home, Arma.

GIRARD-Mary Pike/Pikelj, 95, of Girard, died at
12:45 a.m. Friday, Jan. 17, 1997, at Hospital District No. 1 at Girard. She had been a resident for three years
and hospitalized from one day.
She was born May 10, 1901, at Frontenac, Ks., to
Pete and Marie Eichhorn. She grew up in the Franklin area, where she lived most of her life before moving to rural
Mulberry, living there until entering the Heritage Nursing Home.
She married Andrew Pike in 1917. He preceded her
in death in Oct. of 1967.
She was a homemaker.
Survivors are one son, Albert Pike of Girard; two
sisters, Martha Kness of rural Mulberry and Emma Maghe of Franklin; five grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren
and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sons, Frank Pike in 1988 and Vincent Pike in 1991;
two brothers, Pete and John Eichhorn; and a sister, Rosie Dernosek.
Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Friskel Funeral
HOme at Frontenac with the Rev. Eldor Meyer officiating. Burial will be in the Garden of Memories Cemetery at Pittsburg.

Vincent Pike, 69, of rural Pittsburg, Ks., died
at 4:33 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 22, 1991, at St. John's Regional Medical Center, in Joplin, Mo.
Mr. Pike was born March 17, 1922, in rural Mulberry, Ks., to Andrew Pikelj/Pike and Mary (Eichhorn) Pikelj/Pike.
He was a retired farmer and lived in rural Pittsburg the past 27 years. He married Ruth Marie Zimmerman on Aug.
14, 1964, Miami, Okla.
He was a veteran of World War II serving in the
U. S. Army. He was a member of the S.N.P.J. Lodge No. 9.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth, of the home,
three daughters, Teresa Caldwell of 612 E. 10th, Tracy Pike and Terri Pike of the home; his mother, Mary Pike of
Girard; one brother, Albert Pike of Girard, and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, Andrew
Pike, and a brother, Frank Pike.
Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Open Door Fellowship
Center, west of 20th and the Bypass, with the Rev. Dennis Lorenz officiating.
Casketbearers will be Rick Elnicki, Mike O'Nelio, Doug Burns, Jim Rheums, Julie Tavernaro, and Paul Galichia.

Loretta was born August 13, 1936 in Seymour, MO., the daughter of James and Rosa (Graham) Cummins. She was a lifetime
residence of Pittsburg.

McCUNE — Gloria Ann Dauron, 80 of McCune, KS died
Saturday, January 15, 2011 at the Golden Living Center following a long illness.
She was born March 21, 1930 in Weir, KS the daughter of Lloyd H. and Thelma M. (Hamilton) Sowers. She attended
Cherokee grade schools and graduated from the Cherokee High School.
On September 2, 1949 she was united in marriage to Harold Dauron; he preceded her in death on March 14, 1993.
Gloria was a homemaker and also worked at the Parson State Training School as a dietitian for 25 years, retiring
in May of 1993.
She was a long time member of the Cherokee Holiness Church.
Survivors include a daughter Nicky Davidson and her husband Tim of rural McCune, a brother Lloyd Sowers of Bartlesville,
OK, two grandchildren Adam Davidson and wife Wendy and Colette Davidson, two great grandchildren Colton and Jessica
Davidson.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and a sister Donna Rogers.

SWAN, THOMAS "TOM"
DeSOTO, Texas — Thomas (Tom) Swan, family man,
outdoorsman, sports fanatic, and practical joker, was born August 24, 1946 in Parsons, Kansas. A “small town”
boy, Tom spent his youth fishing, playing ball and working for his dad at Swan Brothers Grocery. His love of athletics
- he was a Kansas All State Basketball Player and college baseball player - led Tom to his first career as a teacher
and coach. Tom and his family moved to Texas in 1984 when he and his brother-in-law started Cups Illustrated,
a plastic cup manufacturing facility. Tom is greatly loved by his family, wife Sondra, son, Tommy and his wife
Misty, daughters Lauren and Amy, grandsons, Drake, Cade and Jett, his sister, Jill Martin and her family, and his

DUECY, IRENE (CHERRY)
Irene Duecy, 88, long time Parsons resident, died
Friday, January 14, 2011 in Austin, Texas.
She was born Anna Irene Cherry on August 4, 1922 in Girard to Alson and Lorena (Hiller) Cherry. She received a
Bachelor of Science in Education on June 1, 1944 from Kansas State Teachers College in Pittsburg.
On May 30, 1947 she married James Duecy in Winnemuca, Nevada. They became the parents of two daughters, Dolores
and Debbie. Mr. Duecy preceded her in death on July 28, 1996.
Mrs. Duecy began her teaching career in 1944 in Galesburg and continued teaching for 30 years, retiring from U.S.D.
506 in Altamont.
She was a long time member of the First Christian Church of Parsons, where she was active for many years. She
was a life member of the Brown-Bishop Post # 704 Ladies Auxiliary.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Royd Malmstrom, Austin, Texas; and grandchildren Ron Malmstrom,
Parsons, Misty Brecker, Austin, Texas, Tanya Childress, LaGrange, Texas, Terrence Ramos, Pittsburg, and Megan Lockwood,
Wichita; and nine great-grandchildren, who brought her such joy.
She was preceded in death by her husband and a daughter, Dolores Lockwood.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn

ARCADIA — Herman W. Tyler, 89, of Arcadia died
at 4:08 P.M. Sunday, January 16, 2011 at Via Christi Hospital at Pittsburg, Kansas.
Mr. Tyler was born October 23, 1921 at El Dorado Springs, Missouri the son of Fred and Grace Myers Tyler. Herman
worked for Dunton’s Furniture Store in Arcadia and later as a truck driver for the Crawford County Highway Department.
He was raised in El Dorado Springs, Missouri and attended El Dorado Springs, Missouri Schools. He had been a resident
of Arcadia most of his life. Herman married Iris L. Garrett on December 24, 1949 at Ft. Scott, Kansas. Mrs. Tyler
preceded him in death February 11, 1997. He was a member of the Arcadia Christian Church. Survivors include two
daughters, Debbie Jack and her husband Dave of Pittsburg and Vicki Hudson and her husband Michael of Joplin, Missouri,
four grandchildren, Damien Tiragol, Jessica Montanelli, Stuart Jack, and Tyler Jack, three great grandchildren,
a brother, Bud Tyler of Lawrence, KS, and a sister, Shirley Allen of Watsonville, California. He was preceded in
death by his parents, wife, four brothers, and two sisters.

FRILEY, ELMA JEAN (MOORE)
PITTSBURG — Elma Jean (Moore) Friley, 92, of Pittsburg,
passed away at 9:00 a.m. Sunday, January 16, 2011 at St. John’s Regional Medical Center at Joplin, Missouri.
Elma Jean was born on December 6, 1918, in rural Missouri East of Opolis, Kansas, to Orla Joe and Rhoda Collis
Moore. Her two grandfathers, Charles Collis and Joe Moore were pioneers in Barton County, Missouri.
As a small child, she moved to Nashville, Missouri. She graduated from high school at Mindenmines, Missouri. Upon
graduation, she enrolled in Pittsburg State University and graduated in 1939. While in college she was a member
of Pi Omega Pi national honorary fraternity for business teachers.
After graduation she married her college sweetheart Paul Brougher Friley. The couple lived in Alabama, Texas, and
Kansas City, but spent most of their married life in Pittsburg, Kansas. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary
August 22, 1990. Wherever they lived, Elma Jean was always active in the Methodist Church. She had numerous hobbies
which included antiques, needle pointing, and growing African violets and roses.
She was a charter member of the Pittsburg chapter of the P.E.O. Sisterhood and a long term member of the Progressive
study club, the Mount Carmel Foundation and a life time member of the Kansas State College Alumni foundation. While
living in Kansas City, she was a member of the Milhaven Garden Club and the Bas Bleu literary club.
Elma Jean is survived by her son Charles B. Friley and his wife Mary of Plano, Texas, and son John R. Friley of
Richland, Washington. Two grandchildren, Stephanie Friley Trahan and her husband Scott of Lausanne, Switzerland,
and Paul B. Friley II and his wife Kate of Washington, D.C. Three great granddaughters Ainsley and Hadley Trahan
of Lausanne, Switzerland, and Lily Miller Friley of Washington D.C.
Her husband Paul B. Friley predeceased her on April 16, 1999.
Graveside services will be at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday (January 19) at Highland Park Cemetery with Reverend Jim Akins
officiating. Burial will follow the services. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday,
at the Brenner Mortuary. Friends may call at the funeral home after 1:00 p.m., today, to sign the register book.

SCOTT, CHRISTINE
(THOGMARTIN)
PITTSBURG — Christine Thogmartin Scott, 95, died
Monday January 17, 2011, at her home.
She was born August 23, 1915, in Pittsburg, to William Franklin and Grace Pearl Mahon Thogmartin.
In 1920, she was enrolled in kindergarten of the Normal Training School on the first floor of Russ Hall, KSTC,
Pittsburg, where she completed grades K-12, graduating from College High School in 1932. She graduated from PSU
with a B.S. in Education and majors in art and English. She did graduate work at both PSU and Kansas University.
She married Arthur M. Scott, September 8, 1935. He preceded her in death on July 16, 2000. She was also preceded
by her parents and brother, Dr. William F. Thogmartin.
In 1960, she taught interior design two semesters at PSU, as part of the Smith-Hughes Program. Her elementary teaching
career included one year at Haycock, Fairfax, Virginia, and one year at Stuart Symington, Ruskin Heights, Missouri,
and 11 years at Corinth, Prairie Village, Kansas.
In 1981 Mrs. Scott and her husband went to China and Japan on a United States Diplomatic Architectural excursion.
Upon her return, she gave many programs on the delegation’s accomplishments and her special interests in the gardens
of both countries
She was dedicated to Pittsburg’s preservation and restoration of its past. She made a strong plea for saving the
Russ Hall marble stairs and another plea to the city commission to save the Stilwell Hotel. She developed the Pittsburg
Commemorative Urn project on the downtown intersections as a member of the Landscape Committee on “Pittsburg Beautiful”.
The Duncan MacCuaig family commissioned her to
design their memorial window of stained glass over the entrance to St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. Other interior
decorating and landscaping talents can be found at the First United Methodist Church and several buildings on campus,
as well as private properties.
Mrs. Scott was a charter member of Wednesday Bridge Club, Friday Dinner Club and Crestwood Country Club. She held
memberships in Phi Mu Gamma, Friday Study Club, and ABUW Creative Writing Group. She held honorary memberships
in Kappoa Pi Art Fraternity and the Alpha Delta Pi Social Sorority. At the request of Dr. Leonard Axe, she helped
organize patronesses for the sorority’s installation on the Pittsburg campus. She held current membership in C.J.
chapter of PEO.
She served on the Y-Teen Board in the 1950’s, the Girl Scout Board for 10 years and the Timmon’s Chapel Advisory
board for 13 years.
Mrs. Scott was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church, Pittsburg, of which her husband’s grandfather
was the first permanent minister.
She is survived by two daughters, Patricia Scott Morgan, Belton, Missouri, and Constance Scott Solomon, Colorado
Springs, Colorado, and a son, Dr. Arthur M. Scott, Kennebunk, Maine, six grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
No services are planned. Private family burial will be in the Highland Park Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will
be held at a later date. The family suggests memorials be given to the Pittsburg Zone 6 Garden Club. These may

SNOW, RUTH I. (LONG)
CLINTON, Mo. — Ruth I. Snow, 97, of Clinton, Missouri,
formerly of Urich, Mo., and Pittsburg, Kansas, died January 16, 2011 in Clinton. She was born November 23, 1913
in Henry County, Mo., to Stevie and Ola (Caldwell) Long. She married Merle Snow on February 26, 1939.
Survivors include a son, Charles "Gene" Snow and wife Janis, Columbia, Mo.; two daughters, JoAnn Steimer,
Scottsdale, Arizona, and Joyce Cunningham and husband Gary, Pittsburg, Ks.; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren;
a brother Wayne Long, Cheyenne, Wyoming. She was preceded in death by her husband, a son, Dean Snow, three sisters,
and two brothers.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. January 20,
2011 at the Evangel Presbyterian Church, Urich, Mo., with burial in the Urich Cemetery. Visitation will be 6:00
to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, at the Bradley & Hadley Funeral Home, Clinton. Contributions may be made to Evangel

CARSON, ELLEN KAY
(SHIPMAN) DR.
GIRARD — Dr. Ellen Kay Carson, 54, of Girard, joined
our Heavenly Father at 11:35 A.M., Sunday, January 16, 2011 ending her battle with cancer at Via Christi in Pittsburg.
She was the youngest of six children born to Lyle and Geneva (Stewart) Shipman on March 29, 1956 in Pittsburg,
Kansas.
She was a member of the First Christian Church
Disciples of Christ in Girard and served as elder and participated in choir. Her true passion was educating nurses
which she began at Fort Scott Community College in 1983. She then taught 17 years at Pittsburg State University
and currently taught at Washburn University. In 2010 while at Washburn, she received the Faculty of Excellence
of the New Millennium. She served as State President of Kansas State Nurses Association from 2005 to 2007, was
a member of Sigma Theta Tau (Nursing Honor Society), and received numerous awards for her leadership and mentorship.
She attended grade school at Crawford Country School and then Girard Elementary. She graduated Girard High School
in 1974. She received her BSN from Pittsburg State University, her Masters from University of Kansas, and her Ph.D.
from University of Arkansas.
On May 27, 1978, she entered in marriage to Marlin L. Carson at the First Presbyterian Church in Girard. Survivors
include husband, Marlin Carson of Girard; one daughter, Lindsay and Aaron Young of Wichita; one son, Grant and
Tosha Carson of Girard; three sisters, Luanne Brennan of Glen Ellyn, Illinois; Carol Marie Shaw of Billings, Montana;
and Nora Eng of San Antonio, Texas; one brother, Phillip Shipman of Girard; aunts, Laura Stewart, Vera Dalrymple,
Loretta Cortner, Corene and Ray Shaffer, and Uncle Ira Johnston; and numerous cousins.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Leroy Shipman; and parents, Lyle and Geneva Shipman.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday at First Christian Church Disciples of Christ in Girard with
Rev. Doug Amend officiating. Celebration service only.
