Organized in 1879, Decatur County was named for Commodore Stephen Decatur, of the United States Navy. Oberlin is the county seat; besides the cities listed at the left, the communities of Allison, Cedar Bluffs, Kanona, Leoville, Lyle and Traer lie within the boundaries of Decatur County.
