Long before Kansas became a state, the area that would be Doniphan County contained a mission for the Sac, Fox and Iowa tribes. The mission, established in 1837, was under the auspices of the Presbyterian Church. It continued its work even into the first years of statehood.
Organized in 1855, Doniphan County was named after Alexander William Doniphan. He was Kentucky born, but went to Missouri where he was well-respected as a lawyer and legislator. He later gained fame as a hero of the Mexican War; as a colonel he played an important part in several significant battles. See this article regarding Col. Doniphan, reprinted from an old Atchison newspaper.
Troy is the county seat; besides the incorporated cities listed as left, Doniphan contains the communities of Bendana, Blair, Doniphan, Fanning, Iowa Point, Moray, Palermo, Purcell and Sparks
