LAWRENCE, DOUGLAS COUNTY.

Is situated on the Kansas River forty miles west of Kansas City. It is the principal town and county seat of Douglas County, one of the most fertile and highly cultivated counties in the State. The shipment of fruit, vegetables, poultry, eggs and butter from Lawrence exceeds that of any other city in Kansas. It also leads in the manufacture of flour. The Kansas River furnishes 12,000 horse-power, which is utilized in running two flouring mills, a barb wire factory, a paper mill, and a large amount of other machinery. The city is most beautifully situated at the foot and on the eastern slope of Mt. Oread. It is amply supplied with shade, and its citizens take a pride in tasty grounds and attractive homes. It has been truthfully called the most beautiful city in Kansas.

Her educational facilities are unsurpassed in the West. The University of Kansas is located here, the U. S. Indian school, a large and prosperous business college, and the public schools are among the best in the State, taking the pupil by easy grades from the alphabet to the Freshman class in the University. Water works, gas, electric lights and street railroads add to the comfort and convenience of her inhabitants. The two grand trunk railroads of Kansas, the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe, and the Kansas Division of the Union Pacific, pass through Lawrence, one on each side of the river. These give unsurpassed railroad facilities to the East and West, while the Southern Kansas and the Lawrence and Emporia Railroads lead to the South and Southwest. The city has four National Banks, having a capital of $450,000, also two large Loan and Investment Companies, and a flourishing Building and Loan Association, giving ample facilities in the way of financial and general business transactions.

There are twenty-two churches in the city. The Young Men's Christian Association and the Young Woman's Christian Association both have flourishing organizations. Population, 12,000.
