AMBURS, WILLIAM C. W. C. Amburs, who had been ill for a long time,
died on Tuesday night. (The Kalvesta Herald, February 24, 1888) Jonas Berkey, father of Mrs. John Cochran died at his home in Salem, Ind. Mrs. Cochran leaves for Salem tonight accompanied by her husband, son Charley and Dr. Neal, a son-in-law of the deceased. (The Garden City Irrigator, October 23, 1886) Mrs. Hannah Brewer, age about 36, died on Monday at her homestead from consumption. She came here a year ago locating three miles northeast of town. She had hoped to return to relatives in Indiana during the last weeks of her life, but was prevented by a man named Kerchival who had contested her claim. She was taken to Partridge Tuesday for burial. A nephew, Mr. Hamilton of Hutchinson, arrived shortly before her death. (The Terry Eye, May 12, 1887) Miss Rose Charles, a step-daughter of Mrs. I. R. Dodds, died at Fairmount, Ind., on June 23. (The Terry Eye, July 4, 1889) Moses L. Conover, age 16, died Sunday of typhoid fever at the residence of J. C. Wolfe on E. 6th Street. He was a brother of Mrs. Wolfe, coming from Greencastle, Ind. Funeral yesterday under auspices of the Fire Department of which he was a member. Burial was in the city cemetery. (The Garden City Sentinel, August 17, 1887) Moses L. Conover, age 17, died of typhoid fever on Sunday, August 14. A brother of Mrs. J. C. Wolf, he came here recently from Greencastle, Ind. Funeral from the Wolf home today, and attended by the fire department of which he was a member. Burial in city cemetery. (The Garden City Herald, August 18, 1887) Thomas Crafton, died from injuries suffered when he jumped off train at Pierceville last week. Interment at Hillsboro, Ind. (The Garden City Irrigator, January 22, 1887) Martin Bowman Crawford on March 16, died after a long illness. He was born February 20, 1851 in Columbiana county, Ohio. In 1874 he edited the Booneville Standard, and on March 22 that year he married Miss Fannie K. Thompson in Sullivan, Ind. After editing the Terre Haute Daily Courier he came to Garden City in February 1886 where he edited the Daily Sentinel. In 1887 he became editor of the Hatfield News and also was appointed postmaster. He leaves his wife and only son Harry. The funeral was held March 18 at the homestead three miles south of Terry, and burial on the homestead north of the residence at his request. Services were conducted by Rev. L. D. Willingham and Rev. Albert Godley. (The Terry Eye, March 21, 1889) M. B. Crawford, age 38, March 16 at his home in Hatfield, from lung hemorrhage. The funeral was conducted by Rev. Godley of the Christian Church, with the Tyrian Lodge of this place in charge of the burial. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Brownsville, Ind. (The Finney County Democrat, March 23, 1889) Martin B. Crawford, age 38, on Saturday, March 16 died near Hatfield of hemorrhage of the lungs. Born February 20, 1851 in Columbiana county, Ohio, he married Miss Fanny K. Thompson in 1887 at Sullivan, Ind. Was publisher in Indiana before coming here in 1886, where he was with the Sentinel, then published the Hatfield News until six weeks ago. Funeral Monday with Tyrian Lodge and Rev. Albert Godley in charge. Burial near home on the claim. (The Garden City Sentinel, March 23, 1889) Martin B. Crawford, editor of the Hatfield News, on March 16, after an illness of seven weeks which began with a severe hemorrhage of the lungs. The funeral was from the family residence March 18, largely attended by the people from the surrounding country. Terry, and Garden City. The services were conducted by Rev. A. Godley, assisted by Rev. Willingham of Garden City and hymns were sung by the Hatfield Choir. The Masonic fraternity of Garden City conducted their ritual at the interment as the remains were laid to rest on the homestead, in accordance with the wishes of the deceased. Mr. Crawford had been a member of the Presbyterian church in Terre Haute, Ind. and was a member of the Union church here. The Hatfield News, March 30, 1889. Mr. Dale, the father of the Dale Brothers of the cornice works in Bedford, Ind., Tuesday died. Interment was on Thursday. (The Finney County Democrat, April 13, 1889) W. E. Drybread, died at the Aurora Hotel in Richfield on Monday. Formerly of Edinburg, Ind. He took a claim 10 miles west of the city last December. Burial was in the Grand View Cemetery Monday at Richfield. (The Garden City Sentinel, August 31, 1887) Mrs. Frances Hopkins, age 74 years, 18 days, died on September 7 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Kate Minard in Garden City. Born in Muskingum county, Ohio, the daughter of William and Elizabeth Barkus, she married in Wabash County, Ind., Joseph Hopkins in 1838. He died in central Missouri in 1877. In 1881 Mrs. Hopkins came with her children to Garden City, one of whom is W. R. Hopkins. She was a member of the Methodist Church. (The Garden City Sentinel, September 14, 1887) Jesse L. McHatton, age 55 years, 11 months died on Sunday, July 3. Born in Indiana, he was a civil war veteran and came to Garden City in 1885. He married first, Miss Mary Dawson who died and second, Miss Lou Hardwick who survives. A son who died last winter in New Mexico was brought here for burial. The deceased was a member of the Methodist church. (The Garden City Sentinel, July 6, 1887) Charles F. Morgan, age 23, son of Chalres Morgan of Derby, Ind., died last Saturday at the Bartholomew hotel where he had been ill with fever for several weeks. The remains were returned to his former home for burial. (The Garfield County Call, November 25, 1887) William Newby of this place, accidentally killed himself Tuesday near Cimarron when reaching for his gun in his wagon to shoot a jackrabbit. He recently came here with his people from the east. (The Garden City Irrigator, November 20, 1884) William F. Newby, age 32y, 11m, 18d, on Tuesday, November 25 died from an accidental gunshot when lifting his gun from the waagon to shoot a rabbit. He was born December 7, 1851 at Waynesville, Ind. Funeral by Elder A. C. McKeever of the Christian church. Burial was in the city cemetery. (The Garden City Sentinel, December 3, 1884) W. W. Pierce, father of Mode M. Pierce and a former resident on Monday in Warsaw, Ind., at the age of 63 years died. (The Garden City Herald, September 12, 1889) W. W. Pierce, father of Judge M. M. Pierce, died on the 2nd inst. at his home in Warsaw, Ind. (The Garden City Sentinel, September 14, 1889) Mrs. Eva Rheubottom, nee Dragoo, age 19, died on August 19 at Lakin. Formerly of LaGrange, Ind. She married F. P. Rheubottom alst March 25. Funeral was conducted by the Rev. Lowrance of Garden City and burial in Lakin cemetery. (The Garden city Sentinel, August 27, 1884) Mrs. F. P. Rhuebottom, age 19, died on Tuesday, at Lakin, formerly of Kendallville, Ind. Funeral conducted by Rev. Lowrance of Garden City, and burial in the cemetery west of Lakin. (The Garden City Irrigator, August 28, 1884) A Smith child, age 3, of Mr. and Mrs. F. S. Smith of this place, died on Sunday, while on visit in Indiana with its mother. (The Garden City Irrigator, January 22, 1887) Mrs. G. W. Smith, died on Wednesday at Albany, Ind. She was a former resident of Ravanna. (The Ravanna Record, November 3, 1888) Theo R. Smith returned Wednesday evening from Indiana where he had gone to pay his respects to his departed mother. The remains of his father were taken up and sent east for burial last week. (The Ravanna Chieftan, November 15, 1888) George W. Smith, died suddenly on Wednesday, apparently from an old wound suffered while in the service of his country as a lieutenant in the 49th Indiana Inf. He came to Kansas in 1885, first settling on a claim south of Ravanna, later moving to this city. He was a member of the Masonic Order, Odd Fellows and Knights of Pythias. The remains were interred with Masonic honors at the Ravanna cemetery in the presence of a large number of friends and neighbors. His wife and two chidlren survive. (The Ravanna Record, October 28, 1887) Geo. Smith died on Tuesday, october 25 at Ravanna after a short illness. The funeral was held at Ravanna. He was the father of Mrs. J. B. Murphy and Theo Smith of Rvanna. he was a member of lodges at Greenville and New Albany, Ind. (The Essex Sunbeam, October 28, 1887) Sarah Teitelbaum, age 32y, 8m, 15d, wife of Samuel Tietelbaum died on April 2 of heart disease. The family came here last October from Vincennes, Ind. Burial was in the Jewish Cemetery. (Garden City Irrigator, April 17, 1884) Blanche Thompson, age 4, oldest child of Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Thompson, died about a week ago at Terre Haute, Ind. of diptheria. Mr. Thompson was working in Hutchinson when summoned by telegram but could not reach Terre Haute in time. (The Hatfield News, January 19, 1889) Mrs. Mary A. Thompson, wife of Dr. J. J. Thompson and mother of Mrs. M. B. Crawford, died at the family home in Sullivan, Ind., Monday, of cancer. (The Hatfield News, March 21, 1888) Mrs. Sophia A. Weir, near Pierceville December 13 of heart disease. Formerly a resident of Indiana, was a sister of Rev. T. C. Smith, known to readers as president of U. C. College, Merom, Ind. Funeral conducted by Rev. Albert Godley. (The Garden City Sentinel, December 22, 1888) Mrs. J. Whitmer died on Monday at family home on East 7th Street after a long illness. Remains taken to former home in Indiana by husband. (The Garden city Irrigator, January 23, 1886) Mrs. J. Whitmer, died at the family home north of Garden City yesterday after a long illnes. She leaves a husband who will take her remains to Indiana for burial. (The Garden City Sentinel, Janaury 27, 1886) Ethel Whitson, the little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Whitson died on Monday, December 10, in Indiana where she had been visting relatives with her mother. The funeral was from the home of Mrs. Whitson's father, Mr. Paul who lives near Seymour, Ind. Burial was in the cemetery there. (The Hatfield News, December 22-29, 1888) Mrs. L. J. Wolf, age 61, died at her home 2-1/2 miles northwest of here on Wednesdsay. She leaves a large family. (The Kansas Sod House, June 24, 1887) Mrs. Mary A. Wolf, formerly Mary A. Richards, was born in Lancaster county, Pennsylvania, March 27, 1826 and died at her home two and one half miles northwest of this place June 22, 1887, aged 61 years, 2 months and 26 days. She married L. J. Wolf at Richville, Elkhart County, Ind., November 26, 1854. She joined the M.E. Church at 16 years of age. She and her husband moved to Garfield County in December 1886. She leaves a husband and three children, two here and one in Warsaw, Ind. (The Ravanna Chieftain, June 30, 1887) |
