Mrs. William B. Adams, formerly of Kalvesta, this county, on October 2, at the Soldiers Home near Dodge City died. She had been ill but a few days. BAKER, CLARENCE DE

Clarence De Baker, aged 16y 3 m 21d, died of typhoid fever September 19. He was born at Lizton, Ind., May 19, 1875 and came to Garfield County with his parents G. W. and Mary E. Baker in 1887. Margaret Himens Bechtelheimer, age 42, died on Monday, February 17. Born on March 23, 1853 in Henry County, Ind., she married Jacob Bechtelheimer, January 12, 1873, coming to Kansas in 1879 and to Finney county in 1886. Funeral at the Amazon schoolhouse Wednesday. BRECKENRIDGE, JOHN

John Breckenridge, formerly of this city, died at Lamar, Colo., June 13. Interment at Lamar. He was connected while here for several years with the Garden City Irrigation Co., but at the time of death was employed by the Santa Fe railroad as a timekeeper. John Breckenridge, died at Lamar, Colo., last Monday of appendicitis. He was well known in Kearny and Finney Counties. His father arrived from Indiana before his son's death and will take the remains home next winter. CAIN, EMMA JANE

Mrs. Emma Jane Cain, age 46, wife of S. P. Cain, died on Tuesday, May 17. Born Emma Jane Stover at Orland, Maine, September 17, 1852, she married on September 30, 1871. In 1883 they moved to Nebraska and to Scott county, Kas, in 1886. The funeral was conducted by Pastor Severance of the Union Church. She leaves her husband and five children; Raymond Cain and Miss Ethel Cain of the home. Howard Cain of Mexico, Mrs. L. V. Cravens, Madison, Ind., and Mrs. J. I. Brooks of Scott county. Emma Jane Stover Cain, wife of A. P. Cain, died on Wednesday, May 17. Born September 27, 1852 at Orland, Maine, she married Mr. Cain September 20, 1871, removing to Nebraska in 1883 and to Scott County, Kans., in 1886. She leaves her husband and five children. The funeral was conducted by her pastor, C. N. Severance of the Union church with interment in Garden City cemetery. CALHOUN, JOHN C.

John C. Calhoun, age 57y 4 m 9d, near Sherlock, died May 29 of la grippe, complicated by other disorders. Born January 20, 1834 in Pennsylvania, he married on his birthday Sarah Surber in 1858 in Indiana. He came to this county from Johnson county, Iowa, March 11, 1879 settling on a homestead. Funeral was held at the home Sunday with the Rev. J. R. Lowrance officiating and a procession of 60 vehicles followed the remains to the city cemetery. All eleven children were present. Pallbearers were all settlers of the same period: John A. Stevens, L. Wilkins, James L. Barnacle, John Simon, James Morgan and S. R. John C. Calhoun, age 57, one of the earliest settlers of this county, died on Friday, May 29. He came to western Kansas in 1879 from Ioa. Born in Pennsylvania, January 20, 1834 he married Sarah Surber January 20, 1858. He was the father of eleven children, all of whom were present at his death. The funeral was held Sunday, May 31 at the home, conducted by Rev. J. R. Lowrance. COCHRAN, EMMA B.

Miss Emma B. Cochran, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Cochran, died on December 14, suddenly at the home of her brother in Denver. Born in Salem, Ind., November 29, 1858 she came with her parents to this city in 1885. She was a member of the Christian Church where the funeral was preached Tuesday. COOK, REBECCA

Mrs. Rebecca, age 76y 5m 1d, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. George Cole on July 24. Born in York County, Pa., February 23, 1818, she was the mother of ten children, seven of whom are living. In 1855 the Cooks moved from Indiana to Illinois, then to Iowa until coming to Kansas in 1883. Others of her children living here are W. C.Cook, Mrs. H. L. Wolf. The funeral held outdoors Thursday due to the crowd, was conducted by Rev. Williams of the Methodist Church. Nora Melissa Crantford, nee Miller, age 29y 14d, wife of W. M. Crantford, on October 29. Born October 15, 1868, she married Mr. Crantford on October 29. Born October 15, 1868, she married Mr. Crantford in October 1887. At age 12 she joined the M. E. Church in Star City, Ind., and the Garden City church by letter in 1882. Leaves husband and children. H. B. Crawford, died at Newton Kansas, May 14 of cholera morbus. Born in 1841 at Delphi, Carroll County, Ind., he leaves two sisters: Mrs. H. V. CRAWFORD, W. H.

W. H. Crawford, age 67 died at his home on Main street Tuesday of Bright's disease. Born in Indiana March 9, 1827, he moved from Terre Haute to this city in 1885 where he engaged in real estate business and later operated a second-hand store. Funeral tomorrow at the C. P. Church, Rev. Moore officiating and attended by members of the A. O. U. W. William Franklin Dolbee, age 23, died of a heart attack while on a visit to relatives here. Born in Valpariso, Ind., in 1875, he later lived in California and Colorado. He married Effie R. Tyler in Denver in 1895. The funeral was held at the home of Mrs. Davison Wednesday. Remains shipped to Colorado. DOLBEE, WILLARD FRANKLIN

Willard Franklin Dolbee, died on Wednesday near Garden City while en route from Colorado to visit Kansas friends. Driving with his wife and small son, he stopped to target shoot when his gun accidentally discharged. He was attended by Dr. Suess but died unexpectedly of heart failure. Born in Valpariso, Ind., in 1865 he married Miss Effie R. Tyler at Denver. The funeral was from the home of Mrs. Davidison in this city and burial in Garden City cemetery. Mrs. B. W. Fitch, died recently at Petoskey, Mich. Mr. Fitch, a printer, came to Garden city, in 1885, later opening a job shop in connection with The Herald. Mrs. Fitch was a musician of great repute in Indiana, and a soloist at the Methodist church in Indianapolis previous to her death. Born Myrtle Green in 1878 in Indiana, she came to Reno county when a child and on December 24, 1897 married Robert C. Foulk and moved to this place. She was a member of the U. B. church. The funeral was held at the home of the parents. She leaves her husband and infant child. GREGORY, ABIGAIL

Mrs. Abigail Gregory, age 56y 5m 8d, mother of the publishers of the Sentinel, died on Monday. An inquest Tuesday determined she had been given corrosive sublimate by Dr. Mary Cartwright, "through criminal circumstances." Born in Montgomery County, Ind, May 2, 1836, she married Samuel Gregory November 5, 1856, rearing three daughters and three sons who survive and was step-mother to Mr. Gregory's children by his first wife. The funeral was conducted at the M. E. church by the Rev. J. C. Moore, Rev. Hull and Rev. Braden. The remains taken to Thorntown, Ind., and interred beside her husband who died in 1869. HALL, ANDREW

Andrew Hall, age 66, brother of Commissioner E. L. Hall, last week at Kentland, Ind. He had edited newspapers at Rushville, Lebanon and Kentland from 1869 to 1895. He came to Kansas took part in the Border warfare was a member of the Indiana legislature and clerk of the court of Newton County, Ind. Frank Hall, age 20, son of E. L. Hall of this city, died at Goodland Ind. on Thursday. Was killed by accidental gunshot. Had married only a month ago. John Hines, age 29 on Wednesday, April 20, died of consumption at the home of his brother-in-law, J. A. Bechtelheimer, 4-1/2 miles north of the Amazon school in north Finney county. Born in Rogersville, Henry County, Ind., he came here from Nebraska last year. The funeral was at the Amazon schoolhouse, April 21, preached by Rev. P. G. Shanklin. Internment in Amazon cemetery. INGE, GEORGE B.

The body of George B. Inge who died last week was brought to Garden City by train where it was met by a procession of the Masonic order, and escorted to the cemetery. Mr. Inge came to Syracuse 8 or 9 years ago and embarked in the general mercantile business with his sons, Lycurgus and Reuben C. He was 71 years old. Leaves his wife and five children, the others being Mr. R. E. Bray of Syracuse, R. C. Inge of LaJunta, Colo. And William and George of this city. He was a member of the Christian Church. Timothy Jessup, age 70, an old resident of this county, died at his home near this city on Friday after a week's illness. Born in Indiana he was a member of the Friends Church. Eliza Wright Johnson, age 76, died on October 18, 1897 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ella F. Morrison at Pierceville. Born in Winchester, Randolph County, Ind., August 31, 1821, she married Thomas Simpson Johnson on her 16th birthday, later removing to Iowa, then to Kendall, Kans. The funeral was at the Methodist Church, with burial in Garden City cemetery. Her surviving children are Capt. John M. Johnson, Colorado Springs, Thomas S. Johnson, of Garden City, Lizzie R. MALONE, JOE

Joe Malone, age 23, former resident of this city was murdered near Las Vegas, N.M., August 23. His employer, Mr. Heckel had sent him to look after cattle and check the home ranch. His body was found in a well, shot twice in the head. As yet no clues as to the murder. He was born in LaGrange, Ind. Leaves his wife and three little children. Frederick Miles, age 17, died on Sunday, June 22, the only child of Mrs. Sarah E. Miles, of heart disease. In 1889 he was a page in the house of representatives. NABORS, GEORGE & LEWIS

George Nabors and son Lewis were murdered by A. F. Pitts of Sherlock, who just came to town and gave himself up to Sheriff Bills. A disagreement over a fence was the cause. A double funeral was held Sunday for George Nabors and his son Lewis at the Methodist Church. They were murdered November 18 by a neighbor in Sherlock township over the erection of a fence. George, the father, age 58, was born in Vermillion County, Ind., an old soldier and a member of the G. A. R. Lewis Nabors, age 26 was born at Ridge Farm, Ill. Services were conducted by Rev. F. C. Fay, with G. A. R. members and the associates of Lewis, as pallbearers. Burial in Garden City cemetery. NORTON, OLIVER M.

O. M. Norton, died at the residence of Lewis Kerstine, Monday after a month's illness with fever. He was born 41 years ago in Indiana, coming to Garden City several years ago to enter the milling business. At the time of death he was operator of the mill at Dodge City. He leaves a wife and two children. The remains were sent to Leavenworth, Kans., for burial. Oliver M. Norton, age 40y 3d, died in this city Tuesday, August 31. Born August 28, 1857, he followed railroading until 1870 when he entered the milling business. He married Miss Francis Middleton, a schoolteacher, in 1888 and came to Garden City in 1892 to take charge of the Roller Mills, which were destroyed by fire last winter. Leaves his wife and two living children. His remains sent to Leavenworth, Kans. For interment. Charles H. Peck, a farmer of northeast Finney county died by his own hand on Wednesday, September 16. A son of Mr. and Mrs. William Peck, he was born in Bloomington, Ind., moving to Wabash county, Ind. where he married Rosa Wiltsee February 16, 1882. Leaves his wife, four children, three brothers and two sisters. Funeral from the home Thursday, Mrs. Rhoda M. Hare officiating. Burial in Garden city cemetery. Charles H. Peck, committed suicide by hanging himself Tuesday at his farm 3 miles northwest of this city. The remains were interred in Garden City Cemetery. He leaves his wife and children. PICKERING, JONATHAN E.

Jonathan E. Pickering, age 81, in this city on Sunday, June 4. Born in Harrison County, Ohio in 1812, son of Jacob and Rachael Herford Pickering, formerly of Culpeper County, Va. Thence to Henry County, Ind. in 1830 where he married Tizrah cooper, daughter of Jacob and Ruth Cooper, in 1834. He came here last summer with his son Lindley L. Pickering from eastern Kansas. A great reader, free soiler, abolitionist, Republican and a member of the Society of Friends. SAMPSON, B. L.

B. L. Sampson, age 28, died Tuesday of consumption, after having arrived here Saturday from Brookston, Ind. He leaves his wife, and father, a Brookston physician. SAMPSON, J. M.

J. M. Sampson, died on Wednesday at the Windsor Hotel. He had arrived with his wife from Brookston, Ind. for the benefit of his health. The Sons of Veterans took charge of the arrangements in returning the deceased to his former home and formed an honor guard to the depot. SHUMARD, JUNE

June Shumard, age 13, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Warren Shumard died on November 6 in Richmond, Ind., from Diptheria and pneumonia. The family formerly lived in Garden city. Miss Lida A. Strain, a former teacher at the south side school, died on October 2 at Eureka Springs, Ark., of neuralgia. The remains were sent home to Harrodsburg, Ind. STREAN, LIDA A.

Miss Lida A. Strean, age about 30, died at Eureka Springs, Ark., on October 2. Was a former teacher in Garden City schools and a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. VINZANT, MAUD

Mrs. Maud Vinzant died last Saturday at the home of Mrs. W. S. Smith in this city of consumption. From Park county, Ind., she was a niece by marriage of J. M. Vinzant. Her husband died of the same disease some years ago. Her remains were taken to Indiana by a brother, Charles Seybold. Mrs. Maud Vinzant, a niece by marriage of J. M. Vizant of this city on Saturday died of consumption. She left a small son and a brother, Charles Seybold who arrived Monday. WALBURN, JOHN

John Walburn, age almost 80 years. Last Friday G. N. Albin received news of the death of his brother-in-law who lived near Nappanee, Ind., who died April 5th of Lagrippe. He leaves an aged companion and three children. He had settled and lived upon the same farm for fifty-two years, being one of the first pioneers of the county. WEEKS, JOSEPH W. JUDGE

Judge Joseph W. Weeks, died of cancer in a private sanitorium in Kansas City on Monday. He was a pioneer settler in this county. Born in Orange County, Ind, April 1, 1845 , he served in the 19th Iowa Inf. In the Civil War. He was county surveyor in Putnam County, Mo., and was a civil engineer during construction of the Burlington and Kansas City railroad. He first came to this county and file don his homestead just north of the city May 3, 1878, which in boom times was an addition to the city, but later operated as his farm. He was elected Probate Judge in 1888, serving two terms. He was a member of the G. A. R., the Masons and the A. O. U. W. He is survived by his sons Elmer, Eugene, David and Charles, and a daughter Olive. The remains were sent to Salem, Iowa to his aged parents. Burial beside two brothers. Judge J. W. Weeks, age 52, a resident of Finney county since 1878, died Monday at a sanitarium in Kansas City, from cancer. He filled the offices of county surveyor, probate judge and the G. A. R. Post. He enlisted at age 16 in 1862 in Co. K, 19th Iowa Inf and was wounded at the battle of Prairie Grove, Ar. The remains were taken to the former home at Salem, Iowa. WHITSON, BARBARA

Barbara Whitson, age 36, youngest of the three children of Aaron and Tacy Whitson, died on December 9 of cancer. Born in Jackson County, Ind., she lost her sight in infancy and at age 10 entered Indiana Institute for the Blind, graduating at the age of 18. She came with her parents to this county in 1885 where she proved up a claim, taught music in Garden City, and was an expert typist. The funeral held at the Garrett Gulick home, Rev. Moore officiating. Burial in Garden City Cemetery. Leaves her father, a sister Mame, and brother J. W. Whitson. Miss Barbara Whitson, daughter of Aaron Whitson, died on Sunday. Blind since birth, she had learned to read, became educated and was an excellent typist and an accomplished musician. Mrs. John W. Whitson, word was received here this week of the death of Mrs. Whitson in Frenandina, Fla., six days after birth of a child. Burial in Hayden, Ind. Mrs. John W. Whitson, died in Fernandina, Fla., on February 13. She leaves her husband and two children, Gladys, age 6 and an infant daughter. The remains were taken to the old home in Hayden, Ind. WHITSON, TACY MRS.

Mrs. Tacy Whitson, age 60, wife of Aaron Whitson, died at the home near Hatfield on Monday, March 21. Born in Knox County, Ohio, June 1, 1832, she was married to Mr. Whitson of Jackson County, Ind., March 12, 1854. Coming to Finney county in 1880, the Whitsons were among the earliest settlers and have lived on their claim ever since. Funeral conducted at the home March 23 by Rev. P. G. Shanklin of the Baptist Church. Surviving are the husband and two children, John H. and Barbara. Mrs. Tacy Whitson, age 60, died at her home near Hatfield this county, March 21 from injuries in a fall last June. Born in Knox County, Ohio, June 1, 1832, she married Aaron Whitson in 1854. The family came to Finney county in 1885 where they have since lived on their claim. The funeral was conducted Wednesday at the home by Rev. P. G. Shanklin and burial was in the cemetery at Garden City. She leaves her husband, a son, J. H. Whitson and daughter Barbara. PORTER, ROY GAYLON

Former Dellvale Resident Dies of Rare Blood Disease

Roy Gaylon Porter, 48, ill since March 10 with a rare blood disease, succumbed Sunday afternoon in a hospital at Garden City. Funeral services will be held in Garden City Wednesday afternoon with burial in the cemetery there.

Mr. Porter was born May 19, 1901, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jake Porter, near Dellvale. He attended the rural schools in that community and graduated from NCHS. He later attended and graduated from Kansas State College with an engineer's degree.

Mr. Porter was employed for years by the state highway and was division engineer at Topeka and Garden City. For the past few years he had been employed as an engineer for the Gross Construction Co.

Surviving are his wife, one son, Phillip, and a daughter, Nancy all of Garden City; three brothers J. R. and W. S. Porter of Dellvale and B. N. Porter of Oakland, CA. and two sisters, Mrs. Burdge Lofgreen of Beaver City, Nebr. and Mina Maxwell of Garden City.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Pearl Porter of Beaver City and S. A. Porter of Chico, Calif.

Mr. and Mrs. Porter and Mrs. Lofgreen had just returned Friday night from Garden City where they had been with him for a few days. J. R. and W. S. Porter and Mrs. Lofgreen will go to Garden City for the funeral services.

RIEGER, JOHN

Garden City, Kan., January 1 - A stranger by the name of John Rieger a German was killed by the east bound passenger train at 11:30 today, near the depot. The coroner's jury found that his death was deliberate suicide by voluntarily throwing himself on the track in front of the moving train. (Topeka Weekly Capital, January 8, 1891, page 2)
