ALLEN, SAMUEL ROLAND Samuel Roland Allen, 84, a long time resident of Finney County, died early this morning at a convalescent home here. He was born in Magnolla, Ill., July 14, 1870 but
lived most of his life in this area. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lydia Allen in May, 1950. David Bostwick dies at Lakin David Brooks Bostwick, 81, died late last night at his home in Lakin. He had been in ill health for several weeks. He was born Oct. 23, 1873 in Savanah, Mo., and came to Lakin June 1, 1934. He is survived by his widow, Lillie, three brothers, one sister and one nephew, Lloyd Williams, Garden City. Funeral services will be held Monday at 3 p.m. CST, from the Phillips chapel. Burial will be in Lakin Cemetery. (Garden City Telegram, April 2, 1955, page 1) Harriet Brunker Dies at Hospital Mrs. Harriet White Brunker, a resident of Garden City sine 1917 died at 5 o'clock this morning in St. Catherine hospital. Mrs. Brunker, 85, had made her home with a son Thomas Brunker, at 312 N. Fifth street. A native of Missouri she was born at Palmyra, Jan. 28, 1870. She attended Palmyra Academy. Her marriage to Thomas A. Brunker took place at Kingfisher, Okla. Surviving other than one son are two daughters, Mrs. Edith B. Reid of Houston, Tex., and Mrs. Barbara Cline of Deerfield; a sister, Mrs. Leslie Chase of Atascadero, Calif., six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Fellowship Baptist Church. The Rev. W. F. Froggatte will officiate. Interment will be in Valley View Cemetery. Mrs. Albert was taken to a hospital, but extent of her injuries was not immediately known. (Garden City Telegram, March 28, 1955, page 1) John Craig, son of James and Jane Dunbar Craig, was born November 25, 1895 at Hillshead, County Antrim, Ireland. He landed with others of the family in Brooklyn, N.Y., in June, 1864, at the age of 4. He had four brothers and five sisters. One sister was buried in the ocean on the voyage over from Ireland. The family lived in Brooklyn one year than moved to Coulterville, Ill. He was married to Elizabeth Millikin of Coulterville, Ill., Sept. 17, 1885. To this union were born four sons. He first came to Garden City in 1881. He went back to Coulterville in 1882 and moved back to Garden City in 1883. He was in Garden City's first band. He helped make the first irrigation ditches in and around Finney and Kearney counties. He established a blacksmith shop in Garden City in 1884 and worked until the spring of 1919 when he moved to Lakin, Kas. In 1949 he moved back to Garden City and remained until his death, Thursday, Feb. 17, at a rest home in the city. He was preceded in death by one son and his wife. Surviving are three sons, Earnest of Lakin, Jack of Garden City and W. C. of Riverside, Ill.; one brother, Sam of Boulder, Colo.; 14 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. Main. Police were called to investigate when a neighbor reported the house locked and the 95 year old woman was lying on the floor. A doctor pronounced the woman dead upon his arrival at the home. A native of Pennsylvania, Mrs. Deal moved to Finney county in 1884 with her husband the late George Deal. She was born at Jamestown, June 3, 1860. Mrs. Deal was a member of the Presbyterian Church. Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Gertrude Gi?son of Memphis, Mo., and Mrs. Grace Lightfoot of LaCanda, Calif., and one brother, John G? of Memphis. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday in the Presbyterian church. The Rev. Irwin Roberson will officiate. Interment will be in the family plot at Milton, Ia. (Garden City Telegram, April 13, 1955, page 1) Mrs. Finnello Dies at LaJunta Mrs. Minnie Finello, 59, died yesterday in the Mennonite hospital at La Junta, Colo. She had been a patient there 5-1/2 weeks. A resident of Western Kansas 35 years, Mrs. Finello
had lived in this county since 1926. She lived in Gray county from 1919 until moving here. Surviving are one son, Harold Stucker of Garden City; one daughter, Mrs. Juanita Weeks of Sublette; four sisters, two brothers, and seven grandchildren. Funeral rites will be held at 2:30 Saturday afternoon in Phillips chapel. Interment will be in Valley View Cemetery. Mr. Foster, 50, died Monday morning in a Topeka hospital. He had been employed at the statehouse in Topeka the past 16 years. Mr. Foster formerly owned a Ness City drug store. (Garden City Telegram, March 31, 1955, page 1) Sarah Hate Dies at Local Hospital Mrs. Sarah Emerald Hate, 85, died Sunday in St. Catherine hospital where she had been a patient 10 days. A resident of Garden City the past 39 years, Mrs. Hate had lived at Shady Lawn convalescent home three years. She was born in Kentucky, June 30, 1869. She was married to the late Alvin M. Hate at Alden, Dec. 25, 1890. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. (Garden City Telegram, February 28, 1955, page 2) Death Takes Effie Huss Mrs. Effie Huss, who lived at Shady Lawn Convalescent home the past 13 months died yesterday in St. Catherine hospital. She was 64. Mrs. Huss came to Garden City from Scott City where she resided several years. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 Saturday afternoon in the Brethren church at Quinter. She was born in that community. Several children and brothers and sisters survive. Interment will be at Quinter. (Garden City Telegram, March 21, 1955, page 2) Death Claims Former Mayor Colorado Springs, Colo. - Harvey F. Jones, former mayor of Garden City, died here Sunday. He had been ill about 10 days and had undergone surgery Wednesday. Mr. Jones, 63, was elected mayor in 1942 and took office in April of that year. He served one, two-year term. He was engaged in the real estate business in Garden City and continued to work as a realtor after moving to Colorado. Surviving are his widow, May; two brothers, Roy Jones, Sr., and Orville O. Jones, both of Garden City, a sister, Mrs. Glen C. Archer, of Oklahoma City, Okla., and a daughter Mrs. Guy Norris of Manitou Springs, Colo. Funeral rites and burial will be held at 10:30 Wednesday morning at Manitou Springs. (Garden City Telegram, April 4, 1955, page 1) A four year old was burned fatally yesterday when her clothing caught fire from a bathroom heater. She was Barbara Joanne Kerfoot, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Kerfoot of Liberal. (Garden City Telegram, March 28, 1955, page 1) Death Takes Garden Citian Mrs. Estelle LaBerteaux, 85, long-time resident of Garden City, died this morning in St. Catherine hospital after a brief illness. She had been a resident of this community much of the time since 1900. For a period of 17 yaers, she made her home with a daughter and son in Washington, D. C. A daughter, Mrs. Leigh Perry, and a son, Blair, both of Garden City survive. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Phillips chapel. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery. The family requests no flowers. (Garden City Telegram, March 28, 1955, page 2) Former Local Resident Dies D. E. Lawrence, 76, long time resident of Garden City died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. R. F. McBride in Caney Sunday following a long illness. He was the brother-in-law of J. E. Hinkle, 202 10th Street and C. D. Hinkle, 1205 Hattie. Lawrence came to Garden City in 1904 and had lived here most of his life. He is survived by a son, Charles Lawrence, Bartlesville, Okla.; three daughters, Mrs. R. f. McBride, Mrs. Taylor Elliott, Bartlesville and Lucy Keller of Larned. Burial will be in Caney. (Garden City Telegram, April 12, 1955, page 1) Former Garden Citian Dies at Manhattan Ora Long, a former Garden Citian died Tuesday in Riley County hospital here. He was 69. A carpenter by trade, Mr. Long worked on grain elevator projects in the Garden City area. He lived in Garden City from 1930 to 1939. Surviving are his widow, Marge of the home and
two daughters, Mrs. Frank Bedker of Garden City and Mrs. Edwin Volan, Jamestown. One Killed, 3 Hurt in Crash at Wichita One person was killed and three others injured when a car smashed into the rear of a parked semi-trailer truck near the south city limits of Wichita early today. Dead is Jesus L. Lopez, 32, of Wichita. (Garden City Telegram, April 2, 1955, page 1) Peter Marx Former Farmer Dies at Dodge Funeral for Peter Paul Marx, former Finney county farmer, was held here March 21. Mr. Marx, 76, lived on a farm near Garden City from 1914 until1927 when the family moved to Syracuse. He had lived in Dodge City since 1929. Mr. Marx was born Oct. 20, 1878, near Otter Creek, Ia. Surviving are his widow, one daughter, two sons, four sisters, one brother and five grandchildren. (Garden City Telegram, March 28, 1955, page 2) Funeral services for William T. Maupin, 55, brother, of Mrs. Wayne Foster, Garden City, were held there this morning. Maupin died unexpectedly Thursday evening at his
home here. A native of Stafford County he had been a pharmacist here for eight years. Minnis Rites Here Friday Funeral services for Claude Wilbur Minnis will be held Friday afternoon at 2:30 in the Garnand Chapel. Minnis died suddenly Monday of a heart attack while working at Uvalde, Tex. He was 46. He was born April 28, 1908, 10 miles south of Pierceville in Finney County. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. J. W. Minnis, 211 North Fourth, and three children, Richard Alton, and Jimmie of Bakersfield, Calif., and Elrita of Torrence, Calif. Interment will be in Valley View Cemetery. (Garden City Telegram, March 2, 1955, page 2) Rare Disease is Fatal to Boy A 12 year old Garden City Boy who had battled a rare blood disease several months died last night as he was being admitted to Leopold Hospital. Marvin Dean Murray, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Murray, 302 Center, died of internal hemorrhaging, the attending physician said. The disease was never fully diagnosed, according to the doctor. The boy underwent several blood transfusions here and at Hutchinson where he was sent for clinical examination. He had been under treatment since October. A sixth-grader at Alta Brown school, Marvin was born Aug. 12, 1943 in Garden City. Surviving are his parents, a sister, Donna Dee and the grandfathers, M. W. Murray of Garden City and J. H. Folke of Hudson. Funeral service will be conducted at 9:30 Friday
in St. Mary's church. The rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Thursday in Garnand chapel. Abraham Lincoln Patee died yesterday in the convalescent home at 307 N. Ninth. A patient there about two years Mr. Patee was 21. Mr. Patee had lived in Kansas since 1884 and had been a Garden City resident since 1941. He was married to Amy Drucilla Sparling of Greensburg in 1889. She died in 1910. A native of Indiana, Mr. Patee was born at Rensslear, dec. 14, 1863. Family Survivors Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Elsey Renshaw and Mrs. Myrtle whitehead of Garden City, Mrs. Bernice Becraft of Manhattan and Mrs. Gertrude Griffith of Dix, Neb.; three sons, Guy of Haviland, Roy of Greensburg and F. L. of Elmwood, Okla.; 36 grandchildren, 54 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Philips chapel. The Rev. Rudolph F. McAdams will officiate. A graveside service will be held at 2:30 Thursday in the Greensburg Cemetery. (Garden City Telegram, April 6, 1955, page 1) Father of Miles Partin Dies in Arkansas J. N. Partin, Clarksville, Ark., died Friday at the age of 92. He was the father of Miles Partin, 507 North Third, and Mrs. Harry Higgins, 507 West Maple and seven other children. Partin, Mrs. Higgins and Lloyd, a grandson 1006 North Third, have gone to Clarksville to attend the funeral. (Garden City Plains, March 12, 1955, page 2) W. H. Pyle Dies in Hutchinson News of the death of W. H. Pyle, former resident of Garden City was received early this morning by relatives. Mr. Pyle has been living in Hutchinson. The son of E. J. and Lueinday Tate he was born in Garden City. Surviving him are his wife, Martha, Hutchinson; one son, Gene, New York City; a daughter, Mrs. Arthur Gilmore, Wichita and one grandson. Mr. Pyle was the brother of Mrs. Clyde Hopper, 411 North Sixth, Mrs. Warren Maltbie, 507 North Fifth and Mrs. Frank Dunn, Montezuma Bethel hospital. Funeral services will be held in Garden City probably Monday or Tuesday. (Garden City Telegram, April 9, 1955, page 1) W. H. Pyle Rites Here Tuesday Morning Funeral services for W. H. Pyle, 66, former resident of Garden City, will be held at 10:30 Tuesday morning in Phillips chapel. The Rev. Franklyn Edwards, pastor of First Methodist Church will officiate. Mr. Pyle died Saturday at Hutchinson. The family asks that heart fund contributions be made instead of sending flowers. Interment will be in Valley View Cemetery. (Garden City Telegram, April 11, 1955, page 2) Jesse Recknor Dies Suddenly Jesse Recknor, 923 N. Ninth, died suddenly yesterday at his home of a heart attack. He was 65. A one time farmer, Mr. Recknor had lived in Garden City since 1931. In recent years, he engaged in furniture upholstering and refinishing. He farmed near Langley and Scott City until moving here. Mr. Recknor was born at Langley in 1889 and lived in that community until 1931. He was married to Nora Grubb on Oct. 18, 1911. He attended rural school at Langley. He was a member of the First Methodist Church. Surviving are his widow, one daughter, Mrs. Fielding Hands, S. Star, Route; one son, Kenneth of Liberal; one sister, Mrs. Herbert Borden of Garden City and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Methodist Church. The Rev. Franklyn Edwards will officiate. Interment will be at Scott City. Friends may pay their respects at Gardnand chapel tonight and Friday. The family suggests contributions be made to the church building fund in lieu of flowers. (Garden City Telegram, April 7, 1955, page 1) Mrs. Straney dies at hospital Mrs. Frances Adrienne Straney, 509 Jones, died Sunday in St. Catherine hospital. She was 64. A resident of Garden City since 1923, Mrs. Straney was born at Alva, Neb., Feb. 12, 1891. She was married to Orley B. Straney at Holly, Colo., July 9, 1912. The couple lived there until moving to Garden City. Mr. Straney died in October of last year. Mrs. Straney joined the Methodist church at Holly. She was a member of Royal Neighbors. Only immediate survivor is a sister, Mrs. Pearl Wright of Canon City, Colo. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 Tuesday morning from Garnand chapel. The rev. J. C. Stork, First Baptist Church pastor, and the Rev. C. O. Galbreath, Methodist pastor at Holly, will officiate. Interment will be in Valley View Cemetery. (Garden City Telegram, March 28, 1955, page 2) Accident Fatal to Al Streeter Albert Edwin Streeter, ANSN, was killed in an accident on Kwajalein Island, March 16, the navy advised his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William H. Streeter, Sr., 628 N. Eighth, today. The telegram from the chief of naval personnel stated merely that Airman Streeter was killed when struck by the rotating propeller of a parked airplane. Death was instantaneous. Airman Streeter, 19, was assigned to the naval air station on the island. He was sent to Kwajalein following a leave here in November. Streeter enlisted for service in August of 1953. He attended Garden City high school but enlisted before graduating. The navy said details of the fatal accident would be given in a letter. Surviving other than his parents are a brother, William Streeter, Jr., four sisters, Mrs. Louis Wagner, Route 1; Mrs. Don Messerly, Sublette, Mrs. Joan Glasse and Marlene of the home and a half-sister Mrs. G. W. Goss, Van Nuys, Calif. Family members said the body will be returned here for final rites and interment. (Garden City Telegram, March 16, 1955, page 1) STREETER SERVICES SCHEDULED FOR MONDAY Funeral services for Albert E. Streeter, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. William H. Streeter, will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at the First Christian Church. Streeter was killed March 16 at Kwajalein where he was stationed with the U.S. Navy. An airman he was struck by a propeller while on the field during a night exercise. The Rev. Otis Pearce will officiate with burial in Valley View Cemetery. (Garden City Telegram, March 26, 1955, page 1) James Vance Dies in Colorado Canon City, Colo., - James Leon Vance former Finney county farmer, died here yesterday. Mr. Vance 85, had been in ill health two years. Mr. Vance moved to Garden City in 1927 from Kiowa
where he operated an elevator several years. He moved to Kiowa from Blackwell, Okla. He farmed land 18 miles east of Garden City from 1927 until his retirement in 1943. He had lived in Canon City since. A native of West Virginia he was born at Ravenrock, Oct. 12, 1869. He was married to Daisy Braun in 1891 at Hutchinson. Mr. Vance was a member of the Methodist church. Surviving are his widow, two daughters, Mrs. Robert Pound of Garden City and Mrs. E. W. Alberding of Kiowa; three sons, P. W. of Springfield, Ill., Howard of Ulysses and Dr. Jack Vance of Canon City, 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Rites Saturday Funeral rites will be held Saturday morning in the Methodist church in Canon City. The body will be brought here for burial. Friends may pay their respects at Phillips Chapel Saturday night. Graveside rites and burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Valley View Cemetery. mother of Ray Vannaman, 1026 N. Fourth, Garden City, was conducted here yesterday. Surviving are six other children, 36 grandchildren and 54 great-grandchildren. (Garden City Telegram, March 17, 1955, page 2) Mrs. John Whitham, 74, resident of Scott county for 50 years died in the Halstead hospital at 2 a.m. today. She had been ill more than three years. In May, Mr. and Mrs. Whitham would have observed their 50th wedding anniversary. Survivors are her husband and four children, Loyd Whitham, falls Church, Va.; Lee Whitham, Galeton, Colo.; Mrs. A. L., Almacher, San Francisco, Calif.; and Mrs. E. V. Redding, Scott City. Also surviving are four sisters, Mrs. C. A. Smith, Garden City; Mrs. Park Franks, Lamar, Colo.; Mrs. Quincey Radnor, Greeley, Colo.; and Mrs. B. R. Lewis, Tucson, Ariz.; who is enroute home from Hawaii. Four brothers, Joe Rischel, Larned; G. W. Rishel, Vale, Ore.; W. C.Rishel, Yellville, Ark.; and P. D. Rishel, Scott City. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. (Garden City Telegram, March 26, 1955, page 1) Walter Witman Dies at Hospital Walter Witman, 41 year old Holcomb famer, died
last night in St. Catherine hospital. Cause of death has not yet been determined. A life-long resident of Western Kansas, Mr. Whitman was born at Marienthal, March 4, 1914. He had farmed most of his life northwest of Holcomb. He was married to Philomena Meier on Jan. 29, 1935 in Garden City. Surviving are his widow, three sons, Richard, Walter, Jr., and Ronald Dean; three daughters, Evelyn Mae, Claudey Marie and Wanda Faye; his mother, Mrs. Joe Witman of Nooksock, Wash., three brothers and five sisters. Time and place of the funeral will be announced later. (Garden City Telegram, March 21, 1955, page 2) Poison is Cause of Witman Death Poison has been listed as the cause of death of Walter Joseph Witman, 41 year old Holcomb farmer. Mr. Witman died Saturday night in St. Catherine
Hospital. He was admitted the day before. He drank the rat poison at his farm home. Funeral service will be held at 9:30 Friday in St. Mary's church. Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Thursday in Phillips chapel. Interment will be in Valley View Cemetery. (Garden
