Note: Formerly known as Davis County, named for the man who was to become the president of the Confederacy,
Jefferson Davis, the name was changed because citizens did not think it appropriate for their county to be named
after a hero of the South. Gen. John W. Geary, a Union general during the civil war, had also served as Governor
of the Kansas Territory, and later, Governor of Pennsylvania. In 1889 Davis County became Geary County.
Geary County is divided into ten townships. The city of Junction City is considered governmentally independent
and is excluded from the census figures for the townships. |

Geary County's largest city and county seat is Junction City. The military installation Ft. Riley lies east
of Junction City.
